NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Monday convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and several others in the 2020 murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma during the North East Delhi riots.The Karkardooma court convicted Hussain of murder and other offences related to rioting. However, it dropped the charge of criminal conspiracy against him.According to ANI, the court also convicted Nazim, Kashim, Anas and Javed for murder, kidnapping, promoting enmity and rioting in connection with the case.The court acquitted six other accused.Ankit Sharma, an Intelligence Bureau official, was killed during the communal violence that erupted in North East Delhi in February 2020. His body was recovered from a drain near Chand Bagh after the riots.The court is expected to hear arguments on the quantum of sentence at a later date.More details awaited. Omar Abdullah calls BJP’s defamation notice ‘great honour’ NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday reacted to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s defamation notice against him over his claim that the safforn party was trying to poach National Conference MLAs from the Jammu region.Calling the notice a “love letter”, Abdullah said that he was a “political force that they cannot ignore”.”I have not been issued any summons. I have received a letter from a lawyer. I consider this a great honour because I am the only politician in J&K who has bestowed with this love letter. I am a political force that they cannot ignore. At the same time, I think it is also symbolic of the way the BJP fights. They take political fights and hide behind the courts,” he said.The J&K BJP issued a legal notice to Abdullah over his allegation that the party had tried to lure National Conference MLAs with cash and ministerial positions in an attempt to bring down his government.”God bears witness that one MLA from Jammu told me that a BJP office-bearer, who is also a Supreme Court lawyer, offered him Rs 20-30 crore, a ministry, and statehood after asking him to support them. They think people’s faith is so weak,” Abdullah had said.The legal notice described Omar Abdullah’s allegations as “entirely untrue, malicious and without any factual basis”, claiming they had damaged the BJP’s reputation.It called on the chief minister to withdraw the allegations in writing, issue an unconditional public apology within seven days, refrain from making or sharing any further defamatory statements against the party, and stop repeating the claims.The notice also warned that failure to comply would invite both civil and criminal action, including a defamation suit seeking Rs 100 crore in damages.Get the latest India news and live updates. Mamata Banerjee cries foul over EC’s ‘stoic silence’, opposes more time for rebel camp NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee has written to the Election Commission (EC), urging it not to grant any further time to the rival faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee in the dispute over the “real” TMC.In her letter, Mamata alleged that the poll body’s “stoic silence” after the extended deadline had effectively given the rebel camp additional “elbow-room”.The intra-party tussle escalated after the Ritabrata Banerjee-led faction approached the EC on July 2, claiming to be the “real” TMC. The group said it had informed the commission of organisational changes adopted during a special session held on June 22 and sought recognition of those changes.Following the rival claim, the EC asked both the Mamata Banerjee-led camp and the Ritabrata faction to submit their responses by 5.30pm on July 6. NEW DELHI: Amid the alleged Ram Temple donation embezzlement row, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has invited applications from eligible candidates for the post of chief executive officer (CEO) of the temple. The successful applicant will head the Ram temple’s administrative management and oversee its day-to-day operations.According to the Trust’s notification, applications must be submitted by 4 pm on July 18. The recruitment follows the finalisation of eligibility criteria by a selection committee. As reported earlier, applicants must be graduates with at least 20 years’ experience in administration or finance. Candidates with prior temple management experience will be given preference, while applicants must also be followers of the Hindu faith.The development comes as the Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre, the Uttar Pradesh government and the Ayodhya Ram Mandir trust on petitions seeking an independent, court-monitored probe into the alleged misappropriation of Ram Temple donations. The apex court also directed the UP government’s Special investigation team (SIT) to file a status report and disclose its composition.The selected CEO will initially be appointed for a three-year term and will be required to reside in Ayodhya during the tenure. The committee has also decided to appoint a Secretary to assist with the recruitment process. Sources quoted by ANI said that the selection process is expected to be completed within the next month after shortlisted candidates are interviewed.The move assumes significance amid the ongoing controversy surrounding alleged embezzlement of donations at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which is being investigated by the SIT.Speaking on Sunday, Ram Mandir construction committee chairman Nripendra Misra clarified that the CEO would function as the administrative head of the temple’s management while remaining accountable to the Trust.”As the name suggests, the Chief Executive Officer will be the head of management. They will work under the Trust and oversee the management tasks. It depends on the Trust as to what kind of delegation of power they give to the CEO. Represetative image NEW DELHI: The Kerala high court on Monday allowed BJP councillor Sugathan R, who is under preventive detention under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA), to take his oath of office inside prison on July 14 at 11 am, Bar and Bench reported.Justice PV Kunhikrishnan observed that the democratic mandate of the electorate could not be defeated merely because an elected representative was under preventive detention.”Oath to be taken in 14.07.2026 at 11am inside the prison. Accredited media persons will be allowed inside to participate,” the judge said.According to Bar and Bench, the order came on a petition filed by Sugathan seeking directions to comply with an earlier High Court judgment requiring him to retake the oath as councillor of the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation.During the hearing, director general of prosecution T Asaf Ali argued that Sugathan could not be released solely for taking the oath since he was under preventive detention under KAAPA. Referring to Article 22(3) of the Constitution, he submitted that persons detained under preventive detention laws are excluded from the safeguards available to ordinary arrested persons under Article 22(1) and (2), Bar and Bench reported.The Court, however, stressed that the electorate had chosen Sugathan despite the criminal cases and allegations against him.”This person was elected despite all the cases against him, right? He has the mandate of the people. See whether the oath can be administered inside the prison. If necessary, I will implead the Superintendent of the Prison,” the judge remarked orally.The judge also said accredited media personnel should be allowed inside the prison during the swearing-in ceremony.”Allow some accredited media person inside the jail, because this is democratic process where they are taking oath, so people should also know what happens inside the oath taking place,” the judge stated orally.According to Bar and Bench, the case stems from a June 24 High Court judgment that declared the oath taken by Sugathan and several other councillors invalid after they swore allegiance in the name of various deities, political martyrs and movements instead of taking the oath in the manner prescribed under the Kerala Municipality Act, 1994.The Court had directed authorities to facilitate fresh oath-taking within four weeks while protecting the validity of the councillors’ official acts until the date of the judgment.While the other councillors retook their oaths, Sugathan was unable to do so after being detained under KAAPA on June 9 and lodged in Viyyur Central Prison, Bar and Bench reported.According to the petition, despite repeated representations to the State government and the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, no arrangements were made to enable him to take the oath. The Corporation later scheduled the ceremony for July 14 at its conference hall.Sugathan subsequently sought temporary release to attend the ceremony. The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-II, Nedumangad granted him interim release from the evening of July 13 until the night of July 14 for the swearing-in ceremony. NEW DELHI: BJP on Monday stepped up its attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, demanding that he explain his recent foreign trip while also accusing him and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of neglecting the constituency after a landslide in Kerala’s Wayanad claimed eight lives.The landslide occurred on July 7 at the site of the Anakkampoyil-Meppadi twin-tube tunnel project, which is being built to connect Wayanad and Kozhikode districts.Launching a fresh attack, BJP IT department chief Amit Malviya questioned Rahul Gandhi’s overseas visit. “Rahul Gandhi’s foreign trip between 22 June and 13 July remains shrouded in mystery. Where did he go? Who did he meet? Who sponsored his travel and stay?” Malviya wrote on X.”These are legitimate questions that the Leader of the Opposition should come clean about. The public is entitled to know whether his overseas engagements involved meetings that could have a bearing on India’s political or strategic interests,” he added.”Does anyone know where Rahul Gandhi is? Which country is he holidaying in? Who is he with? Whom does he travel to meet so often? He has been away from India for an extended period, and no one knows his whereabouts,” Malviya had asked in another post on X.The BJP also questioned why neither Rahul , who earlier represented Wayanad in Parliament, nor Priyanka, the constituency’s current MP, had visited the affected area after the landslide.BJP national spokesperson Guru Prakash said the visuals from Wayanad were “horrifying and deeply disturbing.” “It is a Congress government there, and the MPs are from the Congress party. He seems to be troubled by India’s heat, rain, and monsoon, and is busy travelling abroad…”Earlier on Sunday, BJP national spokesperson Tuhin Sinha had accused both Rahul and Priyanka Vadra of failing to stand with the affected families.”They are merely political tourists. Apart from a single condolence post on social media, neither of them has shown any interest in reaching out to the affected families. This is shameful and reflects that both of them are part-time politicians,” Sinha said.Sinha also claimed Rahul had been missing from public engagements for nearly two weeks and said three of his scheduled student outreach programmes had to be postponed due to his continued absence.The BJP also linked Rahul Gandhi’s absence to the postponement of the Congress’ proposed student outreach programme, “Chhatron Ki Goonj”. As per the campaign schedule released by the Congress, the rallies initiative were scheduled in Prayagraj on July 10, Patna on July 11 and Delhi on July 14, before the next major event in Dehradun.However, the BJP alleged that the programmes were deferred because Rahul extended his foreign visit and is expected to return only around July 17. The Congress has not officially disclosed the purpose of Rahul Gandhi’s foreign trip.Sinha said Rahul’s prolonged absence had raised questions, particularly with the Monsoon Session of Parliament set to begin on July 20.Earlier, Amit Malviya had also questioned the leader of opposition’s absence in a post on X on June 23. “Rahul Gandhi has gone abroad. The Supreme Court on Monday set aside Gauhati high court’s judgments that upheld declarations of 27 appellants as foreigners, noting that citizenship and foreigner status must be decided through a “fair, lawful and reasonable” process.The ruling came from a Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, which remanded the cases to the concerned Foreigners Tribunals for fresh adjudication.The court allowed the appeals while observing that questions relating to citizenship carry “profound constitutional significance” and require adherence to procedural fairness, according to LiveLaw.“Citizenship and foreigner status occupy a field of high constitutional and legal significance,” the bench observed.The Supreme Court, however, acknowledged the government’s interest in preventing misuse of citizenship claims. It said the State has a “legitimate and compelling interest” in ensuring that individuals who are not legally entitled to Indian citizenship do not obtain such status through false claims or procedural delays.“The State has a legitimate and compelling interest in ensuring that persons who are not legally entitled to claim Indian citizenship do not secure such status by misuse of process, by false claim or by taking advantage of delays,” the Bench said.At the same time, the court emphasised that such concerns cannot override the requirement of a fair hearing.“At the same time, the determination of such status must be made through a process which is fair, lawful and reasonable. The statutory burden under Section 9 of the Foreigners Act, 1946 remains fully applicable,” the Bench observed.The court clarified that it had not examined the merits of the appellants’ citizenship claims or the documents submitted by them.“We have not examined the merits of the claims of citizenship by the appellants or expressed any opinion on the genuineness, admissibility, relevance or sufficiency of any document relied upon by them. Those questions must be decided by the concerned Tribunal independently,” it said.The Bench also clarified that the remand order should not be treated as providing any relief on the citizenship claims.“The remand being directed is not intended to confer any equity in favour of a person who is unable to establish his or her claim. It is only to ensure that the serious consequence of being declared a foreigner follows from an adjudication which satisfies the requirements of the Foreigners Act, 1946, the Foreigners (Tribunals) Order, 1964, and the constitutional mandate of fairness,” the Court said.The Supreme Court directed the Foreigners Tribunals to reconsider the cases independently, without being influenced by previous findings of the high court or the tribunals.“The concerned Tribunals shall decide the cases afresh and uninfluenced by any of the observations made by the high court or by the Tribunals in the earlier opinions,” the Bench directed.Relying on Section 9 of the Foreigners Act, 1946, the Gauhati high court had held that the burden of proving Indian citizenship rests entirely on the proceedee, as the relevant facts are considered to be within their special knowledge. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Monday dismissed a plea by around 350 teachers and non-teaching staff of recognised West Bengal madrasas seeking salaries under the state’s grant-in-aid scheme.Barely days after coming of power in West Bengal, chief minister Suvendu Adhikari-led state cabinet Monday scrapped the assistance to the groups based on religious categorisation, effectively ending the religion-based schemes run during the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government.The BJP government had also done away with the exisiting state OBC list in accordance with the Calcutta high court judgement and would set up a panel to decide quota eligibility.A few days ago, in a fresh order, the Suvendu government ordered an inspection of unaided madrasas operating across 12 districts and directed the authorities concerned to submit reports by July 21. The inspection is slated to be completed by July 15, an official said.Per the July 8 order by the state minority affairs and madrasa education department, the inspection of selected unaided madrasas, both recognised and unrecognised, is necessary as part of an exercise to review their functioning and ensure compliance with the government’s educational framework and policies.“The inspections are being undertaken in the interest of student welfare, proper implementation of educational schemes, institutional planning and verification of the functioning of unaided institutions,” a senior government official said.Senior madrasa department officials, along with other government agencies, have been assigned district-wise responsibilities to conduct the inspections. The districts covered include Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum, West Midnapore, East Midnapore, Nadia, Hooghly, Howrah, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas.Unaided madrasas in Bengal operate without government financial assistance. They can be private, recognised institutions or unrecognised Khariji madrasas. Khariji madrasas, which are run and maintained by individuals, communities or private organisations, are estimated to be well over 1,000 across the state, while no official count is available. The flight is scheduled to depart Ho Chi Minh City at 1800 hrs local time and arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai at 2135 hrs IST.”The mortal remains of the 15 Indian nationals who tragically lost their lives in the 11 July boat accident will be repatriated from Ho Chi Minh City to India today via Vietnam Airlines flight VN979,” the embassy said.It added that the respective state governments had been informed and requested to coordinate with the affected families for the onward transportation of the mortal remains to their final destinations.”The Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City pray for the family members of the deceased. The flight is scheduled to depart Ho Chi Minh City at 1800 hrs local time and arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai at 2135 hrs IST.”The mortal remains of the 15 Indian nationals who tragically lost their lives in the 11 July boat accident will be repatriated from Ho Chi Minh City to India today via Vietnam Airlines flight VN979,” the embassy said.It added that the respective state governments had been informed and requested to coordinate with the affected families for the onward transportation of the mortal remains to their final destinations.”The Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City pray for the family members of the deceased. The latest UDISE+ data shows the gap is not confined to govt schools – the situation was similar for govt-aided and private schools.The share of schools with secondary sections having integrated science laboratories stood at 54.6% in 2025-26, down from the three-year peak of 57.1% in 2024-25 and 55.9% in 2023-24.In absolute terms, the number of schools with such laboratories increased from 1.6 lakh in 2023-24 to 1.7 lakh in 2025-26. However, the number of schools offering secondary education rose faster – from around 2.9 lakh to 3.1 lakh, pulling down overall coverage.The report stresses the need for “adequate and safe infrastructure… computing devices, internet, libraries, and sports and recreational resources”. It also warns that an imbalance in the availability of schools at different levels “may pose the risk of large-scale dropout of students at the higher classes”.The management-wise trend is uneven.Govt schools saw integrated science lab coverage edge up from 50.2% in 2023-24 to 51.1% in 2025-26. In contrast, govt-aided schools declined from 63.2% to 59.9%, while private unaided schools fell from 60.7% to 57.5%.State-level data shows sharp contrasts. Bihar remained among the laggards, with only 26.9% of secondary schools having integrated science labs in 2025-26, though this improved from 23% in 2023-24.Assam rose sharply from 28.8% to 43.3%. Gujarat slipped from 46.7% to 43.8%, while Andhra Pradesh fell from 61.9% to 48.7% as secondary schooling expanded.Among the best performers, Delhi reported 99.7% coverage, followed by Chhattisgarh at 79.8% and Haryana at 77.4%. Their share of functional smart classrooms also rose from 21.2% to 32.2%, though it remains below aided schools at 41% and private unaided schools at 39.9%.The latest UDISE+ report shows 67.4% of schools had internet facilities, up from 63.5% in 2024-25 and 53.9% in 2023-24, and that all schools in Goa have internet coverage while West Bengal lags at 19.7% in 2025-26.Excluding UTs, Andhra Pradesh followed Goa at 99.2% coverage, ahead of Tamil Nadu at 99%, Gujarat at 96.8% and Kerala at 92.6%. At the bottom, Bengal was followed by Arunachal Pradesh at 36%, Meghalaya at 36.4%, Manipur at 38.8% and Tripura at 42.5%.Goa rose from 87.6% in 2023-24 to full coverage and Andhra Pradesh from 93.9% to 99.2%. It is a region rich in lore and timeless rituals. And central to those rituals are lakes and ponds, by whose banks people mark and commemorate every landmark from birth to death. Central as the water bodies are to its community life, many of them are facing a slow death. The plight of three such lakes has now prompted an intervention by the Supreme Court itself.The apex court usually refrains from entertaining matters related to local issues and asks petitioners to approach high courts. But it agreed to examine the case in which the petitioners have accused the govt itself of posing a threat to the three water bodies – Ganga Sagar, Digghi, and Harahi, which were built by three local kings and have been around for nearly a millennium – by launching a ‘beautification’ project under the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO).A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta has sought an explanation from Bihar govt over the BUIDCO plan. Locals say the govt’s plan to fill parts of the ponds to construct kiosks, restaurants, and pavements is nothing but encroachment in the guise of “beautification”. Eklavya Prasad, who has worked extensively on the conservation of water bodies said “the govt is causing irreversible damage to the ponds in the name of beautification”.Deciding to act on their concerns, a group of retired academics, environmentalists, and citizens under the banner of Talab Bachao Abhiyan (TBA) said in their plea that the filling of ponds violates orders passed by National Green Tribunal (NGT), high court, and Supreme Court itself. The petitioners want the removal of all encroachments around the ponds, and their restoration “to their original position as depicted in the maps of the years 1868 and 1960”.Narayan Chaudhary, who heads TBA and has spent decades fighting legal battles to save water bodies, said the crisis of the Darnbhanga ponds has been unfolding for years, but authorities did not recognise it. “Per the District Gazetteer of 1964, Darbhanga – once called the ‘city of ponds’ – had 350 ponds. The Darbhanga Nagar Nigam now puts the figure at less than 100. That means around 250 ponds have disappeared in 60 years. Now, the govt itself is filling historic ponds in violation of Wetland Rules and judicial orders. Per official records, the three ponds spread over 253 bighas, but more than 25% of the area is under encroachment,” he said.Slamming the BUIDCO project, retired professor of botany Vidya Nath Jha said it would lead to the death of the ponds. “Filling parts of the water bodies will destroy biodiversity and the self-cleaning capacity maintained by insects and aquatic life,” he told TOI.Mithilanchal has a long tradition of constructing ponds as a water management system suited to its flood-prone, riverine landscape. Districts like Madhubani had over 10,000 ponds and Darbhanga around 9,000. These ponds serve as vital rainwater harvesting structures and recharge groundwater, mitigate floods by storing excess water, and provide water during droughts.Sayed Shamim Ahmad, who came to the city as a student in 1964 and retired as a professor, talks of the larger loss that occurs when a pond is filled. “During my PhD research in 1980, I had mapped 108 wetlands where 88 types of birds, including migratory ones, used to come. More than 60% of the wetlands have now vanished. Ponds have gone, groundwater is depleting, and a water crisis is looming. It is high time the govt gave priority to the preservation of water bodies,” he said.The concerns of experts and members of civil society speak to a larger phenomenon visible across Bihar. Per the 2025 water bodies census, the total number of water bodies in Bihar is 36,856, a 19% drop from the 2019 census.As Darbhanga waits on SC to save its water bodies, environmentalist Prasad underlined the issue at stake. “The govt needs to know that revival and preservation is not just about physical structures – it requires maintaining the entire ecosystem, water quality, biodiversity, and making people connect with the ponds. But a missing veena and a digital deep dive supplied the mantra as a silent stone goddess spoke her true name.A striking 12th-century sculpture from Dhar in southwestern Madhya Pradesh, long worshipped in scholarship as Saraswati, has now been identified as goddess Gayatri, transforming a familiar museum treasure into one of India’s rarest known images of the deity who personifies the Gayatri Mantra and Vedic wisdom.Fresh digital documentation and high-resolution 3D mapping of the red sandstone sculpture at Bhopal’s State Museum helped archaeologists decode iconographic clues that had escaped notice for centuries.What emerged was more than a corrected museum label. It restored a forgotten chapter of India’s sacred art. “The image matches classical descriptions of Gayatri in the Silpasastras,” said archaeologist Ramesh Yadav, associated with the directorate of archaeology, archives and museums.Missing veena proves sculpture is of Gayatri, not of SaraswatiArchaeologist Ramesh Yadav said, “The four-armed goddess sits in lalitasana, holding a rosary, lotus and the Vedas. A finely carved hamsa (swan) beside her symbolises sacred wisdom, while celestial garland bearers affirm her divinity. Together, these attributes identify the deity as Gayatri rather than Saraswati.”It was what the sculptor left out that became the clincher. “From the Gupta period (320–550 CE) onwards, Saraswati is almost invariably shown with a veena,” said historian and archaeologist BK Lokhande. “This image has none. Instead, she holds the Vedas and a lotus exactly as described in Srimad Devi Bhagavata Purana and the Silpasastras. Images of Gayatri are exceptionally rare. While Gayatri, Savitri and Saraswati all embody knowledge, the iconography leaves little doubt that this is Gayatri.”Unearthed in Dhar, capital of the Parmar dynasty (9th to 14th century), the sculpture carries distinct Western Chalukyan influence in its graceful modelling and ornamentation while faithfully reflecting classical descriptions of Gayatri. Rigveda preserves Gayatri Mantra, Satapatha Brahmana celebrates Gayatri as the fountainhead of sacred knowledge, while later Puranas revere her as Vedamata, Mantramata, Brahmavidya and Jaganmata.The rediscovered icon is becoming the poster image for MP’s digital heritage mission.
