With PM Narendra Modi in The Hague, Dutch foreign minister Tom Berendsen decodes the new India-Netherlands strategic partnership, semiconductor focus and the geopolitical imperative for trust-based ties in an exclusive interview to Sachin Parashar. This is the second visit by PM Modi to the Netherlands and the first since the India-EU FTA was announced. What are the big takeaways you looking at from the visit as one of India’s leading trade partners in Europe? In a world that is becoming increasingly unpredictable, where international tensions are rising and geopolitical relationships are constantly shifting, strategic cooperation is not a luxury, but a necessity. The Netherlands is actively seeking new partnerships outside traditional alliances. One country stands out: India. For the Netherlands, India – as the world’s largest democracy and emerging player in the Indo-Pacific – is a logical and promising partner. Not only in the field of trade, but increasingly as an ally in the field of security and innovation as well. Both our countries want to elevate our cooperation, so we have decided to enter into a strategic partnership focused on trade & investment, security, innovation, and people-to-people ties. By joining forces, we will be better able in the future to ensure our earning capacity and security. The India-EU Free Trade Agreement can unlock even greater cooperation and strengthen supply chains at a time of global uncertainty. The strategic partnership between the Netherlands and India forms a solid basis for jointly finding solutions to the major geopolitical challenges of our time, because by investing purposefully in this relationship both our countries are building a resilient future – based on shared interests, innovation, and strategic trust. Given the focus on the semiconductor partnership, and the global push to build resilient supply chains, how do you propose to further link your advanced semiconductor ecosystem with India’s semiconductor mission and manufacturing expansion? Semiconductors have become central to economic resilience and technological leadership worldwide. The Netherlands has a highly advanced semiconductor ecosystem, while India brings enormous engineering talent, innovation capacity and growing manufacturing ambitions. That is a very powerful combination. Our goal is to build a long-term innovation partnership by connecting universities, research institutes, startups and industry on both sides. There is also a broader strategic logic. Recent global disruptions showed the importance of diversified and trusted supply chains. India’s rise as a semiconductor hub can play a major role in building a more resilient global ecosystem, and the Netherlands has a lot to offer on that journey. The PMs are expected to discuss the current situation both in West Asia and Ukraine. Are you looking at any specific form of cooperation with India to mitigate the effects of these conflicts? For the Netherlands, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine is the most serious security challenge facing Europe in decades. It is not only a war against Ukraine and its territorial integrity, but a direct challenge to the very principles of sovereignty, international law and the rules-based international order that underpin global stability and are enshrined in the United Nations Charter. The consequences extend far beyond Europe. The war in the Middle East and blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have further reinforced pressures, particularly around maritime security and global trade flows. These wars have disrupted energy markets, food supplies, shipping routes and supply chains worldwide, demonstrating how deeply interconnected today’s economies and security environments have become. In this context, closer cooperation between trusted partners such as India is necessary. Both countries have a strong interest in economic resilience, secure sea lanes and stable global supply chains. We both have a strong interest in the peaceful resolution of disputes and upholding international law. Trusted strategic partnerships are no longer optional; they are essential. And the interests of The Netherlands, the EU and India clearly converge here. There’s focus also on developing defense cooperation as a key pillar of the partnership. Can we expect more frequent joint naval exercises and progress in discussions for tech collaboration, co-development and co-production of defense equipment? Will India’s ties with Russia affect these efforts? The Netherlands and India are exploring possibilities for a deeper and more strategic defense partnership, particularly in the maritime, cyber and technology domains. In the coming years, cooperation is expected to become more operational and technology-driven, including greater naval engagement, maritime exchanges, cybersecurity cooperation and stronger industrial partnerships. In this light, earlier this month a Dutch frigate made a port call to Kochi to strengthen naval to naval ties between India and The Netherlands. There is also a growing understanding across Europe that India is diversifying its defense partnerships and emerging as a major strategic actor in its own right. The Dutch approach is therefore pragmatic and forward-looking: the focus is on expanding areas where Dutch and Indian security interests increasingly converge. How is the Dutch Indo-Pacific strategy aligned with India’s focus on maritime security, freedom of navigation and on promoting a free, open and inclusive region amid Chinese assertiveness? The Netherlands and India increasingly see the Indo-Pacific through the same lens: stability at sea is essential for prosperity on land. As trading nations, both of us depend on open shipping routes, secure supply chains and respect for international maritime law. India plays a pivotal role in the Indo-Pacific, and the Netherlands sees India as a natural strategic partner in maintaining a free, open and inclusive region. That is why we are expanding cooperation in maritime security, cyber resilience, smart ports and naval engagement, including through frameworks such as the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative that the Netherlands recently joined as a co-lead of the capacity building pillar. Our approach is not about confrontation. It is about ensuring that all countries can trade freely, connect securely and operate under clear international rules. In today’s geopolitical climate, trusted partnerships matter more than ever. That is why the new Strategic Partnership between our countries is so important.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosUnion Minister Bandi Sanjay Hands Over Son To Police In POCSO Case, Says ‘All Are Equal Before Law’Centre Restricts Silver Bar Imports, Changes Status From ‘Free’ To ‘Restricted’Tamil Nadu Cabinet: CM Vijay Takes Home, Sengottaiyan Gets Finance; Check Full List’Modi Ji…’: Rahul Gandhi Demands Sacking Of Dharmendra Pradhan Over NEET Paper Leak’History Or Geography’: Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi Issues Stern Warning To PakistanCBI Seeks 14-Day Custody Of Accused In NEET-UG 2026 Paper Leak Case; Pune Botany Teacher Arrested’Misquoted’: CJI Surya Kant Clarifies ‘Cockroach’ Remarks On Unemployed YouthNetherlands Returns 11th Century Chola-Era Copper Plates To India During PM Modi’s Visit’Jhalmuri Reached Here Too?’: PM Modi Invokes Bengal Polls In Netherlands, Lauds Indian DiasporaRampur Court Sentences Azam Khan To 2 Years In 2019 Speech Case, SP Veteran Faces Fresh Legal Blow123PhotostoriesTannaz Irani opens up about marrying an older Muslim man, dealing with mom’s guilt after divorce, and the age gap between her and Bakhtyaar Irani“I can’t be her friend”: Riddhima Kapoor gets real about raising daughter SamaraFrom Will Smith to Emily Blunt: 10 actors who rejected roles that later became iconic10 birds with hilariously perverted names and where travellers can find themWhat sparked rumours of Shehnaaz Gill dating cricketer Devdutt Padikkal?9 junk food swaps that can make your diet healthierIt’s not just salt anymore: Why your stressful 10-hour workday could be pushing your blood pressure higherCannes 2026 Day 4: John Travolta’s surprise win, Léa Seydoux’s magic, and unmissable red carpet glam!Travellers beware: 5 dirtiest things in a hotel room you didn’t know aboutHow to grow jasmine that flowers year-round in Indian weather: 5 mindful tips for beginners123Hot PicksCBSE class 12 resultUS Iran warPrateek YadavHaryana election resultForeign outflowNEET exam cancelledTamil Nadu assemblyTop TrendingRishabh PantNEET PaperIPL Points TableNEET Aspirant DieKerala Board SSLC Result 2026IPL 2026IPL Orange Cap 2026Bengaluru RapeCBSE 2 Language RuleRussia Lavrow

. NEW DELHI: A Delhi court granted Saturday pre-arrest bail to businessman Robert Vadra in a money laundering case tied to a land deal in Haryana, ruling that his “detention in judicial custody is neither necessary nor warranted” after ED chose not to arrest him during its investigation. Special judge Sushant Changotra of Rouse Avenue Courts also granted relief to co-accused Kewal Singh Virk on a surety bond of Rs 50,000 each. The case relates to a 3.5-acre parcel in Shikohpur village in Gurgaon. According to ED, a company linked to Vadra bought the land from Omkareshwar Properties in Feb 2008 for Rs 7.5 crore and later sold it to DLF for Rs 58 crore. ED claims the transaction generated proceeds of crime and formed part of a larger alleged money laundering operation stemming from a 2018 FIR over purported irregularities in the deal. The court said that Vadra had cooperated with investigators and appeared whenever he was summoned, making detention in custody unnecessary. It held that the accused could face ordinary trial proceedings without being sent to judicial custody.— Koushiki SahaEnd of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosUnion Minister Bandi Sanjay Hands Over Son To Police In POCSO Case, Says ‘All Are Equal Before Law’Centre Restricts Silver Bar Imports, Changes Status From ‘Free’ To ‘Restricted’Tamil Nadu Cabinet: CM Vijay Takes Home, Sengottaiyan Gets Finance; Check Full List’Modi Ji…’: Rahul Gandhi Demands Sacking Of Dharmendra Pradhan Over NEET Paper Leak’History Or Geography’: Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi Issues Stern Warning To PakistanCBI Seeks 14-Day Custody Of Accused In NEET-UG 2026 Paper Leak Case; Pune Botany Teacher Arrested’Misquoted’: CJI Surya Kant Clarifies ‘Cockroach’ Remarks On Unemployed YouthNetherlands Returns 11th Century Chola-Era Copper Plates To India During PM Modi’s Visit’Jhalmuri Reached Here Too?’: PM Modi Invokes Bengal Polls In Netherlands, Lauds Indian DiasporaRampur Court Sentences Azam Khan To 2 Years In 2019 Speech Case, SP Veteran Faces Fresh Legal Blow123PhotostoriesTannaz Irani opens up about marrying an older Muslim man, dealing with mom’s guilt after divorce, and the age gap between her and Bakhtyaar Irani“I can’t be her friend”: Riddhima Kapoor gets real about raising daughter SamaraFrom Will Smith to Emily Blunt: 10 actors who rejected roles that later became iconic10 birds with hilariously perverted names and where travellers can find themWhat sparked rumours of Shehnaaz Gill dating cricketer Devdutt Padikkal?9 junk food swaps that can make your diet healthierIt’s not just salt anymore: Why your stressful 10-hour workday could be pushing your blood pressure higherCannes 2026 Day 4: John Travolta’s surprise win, Léa Seydoux’s magic, and unmissable red carpet glam!Travellers beware: 5 dirtiest things in a hotel room you didn’t know aboutHow to grow jasmine that flowers year-round in Indian weather: 5 mindful tips for beginners123Hot PicksCBSE class 12 resultUS Iran warPrateek YadavHaryana election resultForeign outflowNEET exam cancelledTamil Nadu assemblyTop TrendingRishabh PantNEET PaperIPL Points TableNEET Aspirant DieKerala Board SSLC Result 2026IPL 2026IPL Orange Cap 2026Bengaluru RapeCBSE 2 Language RuleRussia Lavrow

SRINAGAR: J&K authorities announced Friday detentions of six people under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) for allegedly inciting “law and order disturbances” and “acts of vandalism” during a recent students’ protest in Kashmir’s Sopore. The students were protesting against a schoolteacher accused of molestation and later taken into custody.Police said Umar Akbar Hajam, Salman Ahmed Shala, Altaf Ahmed Sheikh, Mubashir Ahmed Gilkar, Muzammil Mushtaq Changa, and Majid Firdous Dar were detained after authorisation from the district magistrate, as required under PSA. They have been jailed in Jammu’s Doda. All hail from Sopore, the police said, adding none is a student. “These miscreants were involved in attempting to disturb peace during a recent protest by students. Their activities posed a serious threat to public order and safety,” a police statement said, adding more individuals involved in the April 13 trouble are being identified for prosecution, including under PSA.In a warning to the public, the police asked them to “stay away from unlawful activities and not to fall prey to instigation by anti-social elements”.The police have not mentioned the specific PSA clause under which the six have been booked. The law allows detentions for six months without trial if an accused is a threat to the security of the State, with extensions of six months. Under a PSA clause on threat to public order, preventive detentions are allowed up to three months, with extensions of three months.Earlier, PSA allowed detentions without trials up to two years. But an amendment during a previous stint of J&K CM Omar Abdullah in 2011 reduced the detention period to six months from two years for threat to security of the State and from one year to three months for threat to public order.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosHow Kejriwal’s AAP And Raghav Chadha Drifted Apart In A Slow-Burn Political Breakup”Right Man, Wrong Party”: Raghav Chadha Quits AAP with 6 MPs; The End of Kejriwal’s RS Power? Why Israel Is Relocating Hidden Jews From India-s Northeast Amid War PressuresAshok Mittal Joins BJP After Replacing Raghav Chadha In RS & ED Raids | WatchSamrat Choudhary, Tejashwi Yadav Clash Over CM Post, Stability & Lalu LegacyHow Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal Exit Triggers AAP CrisisAAP Targets Raghav Chadha & MPs Over Exit, Says they ‘Betrayed The People Of Punjab’Meet The 7 AAP MPs Who Resigned And Joined BJP In Big Political Shock To KejriwalRaghav Chadha Quits AAP, Joins BJP With Six Other MPs | WatchBihar CM Samrat Choudhary Clears Floor Test, NDA Government Proves Majority In Assembly123PhotostoriesAnupamaa fame Paras Kalnawat opens up about being cheated on and a toxic relationship that took a toll on him; says, “Main tadap raha tha aur uske 15-16 boyfriend ban rahe the”Why do aloo bhujia sticks to the kadhai? 4 simple tips to fix it at homeForget mozzarella and cheddar: Try these 6 traditional Indian cheeses that are highly nutritiousWhat makes their marriage so strong? 5 relationship secrets to learn from Anjali and Sachin TendulkarAre you loading your dishwasher the right way? – A new white paper notes that “Indian migration to the UK has evolved in four distinct waves since 1947, each aligned with Britain’s shifting economic and labour needs.” and argues that it has played a central role in shaping modern Britain’s economyThe report titled “Migration of the Indian Diaspora to the UK”, released by Manish Tiwari of Here & Now 365 in collaboration with the Aston India Centre at Aston University, traces the evolution of Indian migration.According to the study, the first wave arrived during post-war labour shortages, with “post-war migration from India help[ing] address acute labour shortages across manufacturing, transport and public services, contributing to the foundations of the National Health Service.” The second wave followed the 1970s expulsion of Asians from East Africa, which “led to significant entrepreneurial activity and local economic regeneration.”Many of these families established businesses that revitalised local economies. As the UK economy transitioned toward a knowledge-based model, Indian migration increasingly comprised skilled professionals. The white paper estimates that “Indian-born professionals are estimated to account for around 15% of the UK’s technology workforce.” In the post-Brexit and post-pandemic period, the fourth wave is described as strategically significant. “Indian professionals have become strategically important in addressing critical skills shortages,” the report states.Describing the Indian diaspora as “among the most economically successful ethnic minority groups in the UK,” the study underscores the community’s continued role in healthcare, technology and entrepreneurship.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. – BENGALURU: A Japanese construction technology firm and an Indian Institute of Science-backed data platform have joined forces in a bid to unlock one of urban planning’s most persistent blind spots: the vast troves of construction data that go dark the moment a building project closes.ONESTRUCTION Inc., a Tottori-based specialist in open-standard built environment data, and DataKaveri Systems, the commercial arm of IISc Bengaluru’s Centre of Data for Public Good (CDPG) signed an MoU to integrate construction data into AI-ready urban data exchanges across Indian and Japanese cities. The signing took place on the sidelines of the inaugural Japan-India AI Strategic Dialogue — a bilateral initiative to advance cooperation in AI and data infrastructure.Under the agreement, the two organisations will work to connect ONESTRUCTION’s openBIM platform — built around IFC, the internationally recognised open data standard for construction information — with DataKaveri’s Intelligent Universal Data Exchange (IUDX), a platform already live across 55 smart cities in India covering urban mobility, utilities, environment and public services. The ambition is to make construction data such as floor plans, utility layouts, and asset histories, flow securely into city-scale AI applications and digital twins, rather than being lost or locked within individual project silos once construction ends.Lucas Haywood, VP of Global Strategy at ONESTRUCTION, said the collaboration pointed toward a future where standardised building data could be useful “in the context of everything else that describes a city.” Ashok Krishnan, VP of Commercial Business and Revenue at CDPG and DataKaveri, described the construction industry as sitting on “a goldmine of data” that rarely travels beyond the boundaries of individual projects. The two firms said they would jointly explore AI use-cases drawing on combined construction and urban datasets, and pursue bilateral funding opportunities. Both said they hoped the model could be replicated internationally.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos‘Uninformed, Inappropriate’: India Responds To Trump’s ‘Hell-hole’ Comment‘In Touch With Iran’: MEA Confirms Indian Crew Safe After Hormuz FiringViolent Clashes Mar Bengal Phase 1 Voting As Tamil Stars Contribute To 82% TurnoutFrance Waives Airport Transit Visa For Indian Nationals, Boosts Travel EaseTop Military Leadership Of India And US Engage To Discuss Common Concerns In The Indo-pacificEx-Domestic Worker Arrested in Delhi IIT Graduate Murder; Linked to Alwar CaseTrump Sparks Outrage After Reposting ‘Hellholes’ Remark on India, China Amid Citizenship DebateUS Congressman Urges Pakistan To Act Against LeT, JeM; Renews Focus On Cross-Border TerrorWest Bengal Poll Violence: Blast In Murshidabad Injures Multiple During VotingVijay Writes To EC Seeking Poll Extension Amid 17.69% Early Turnout In Tamil Nadu123PhotostoriesCan air conditioning make us sick?

NEW DELHI: CBSE has decided to implement the new three-language rule for Class IX from the 2026–27 session. From July 1, 2026, all Class IX students must study three languages, with “at least two being native Indian languages”, under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework 2023.Students opting for a foreign language can do so “as the third language only if the other two languages are native Indian languages, or as an additional fourth language”, CBSE said in its May 15 circular. The board also announced relief measures for students by removing formal board examinations for the third language.“No Board Examination shall be conducted for R3 (third language) at the Class X level. All assessments for R3 shall be entirely school-based and internal,” the circular stated. The performance, however, “will be duly reflected in the CBSE certificate.” CBSE said the revised scheme followed a “transitional approach” because the academic session had already started in April 2026. The current class X batch in 2026-27 will continue under the earlier language structure carried forward from class IX.Ashok Pandey, a former principal and policy analyst, said the emphasis on multilingualism was consistent with the NE vision, but cautioned that introducing the third-language mandate in classes IX at this stage could create anxiety among students already entering board years. “Board years demand stability and confidence. Such reforms are best implemented gradually and cohort-wise, giving schools, teachers and learners adequate preparation time,” he said.Pandey noted that many CBSE schools had so far followed a language structure combining English, Hindi or a regional language, along with foreign languages such as French, German or Spanish. “Educational changes succeed through thoughtful transition management and not only on the strength of a good intent,” he said, adding that schools were still dealing with teacher availability, timetable restructuring, curriculum alignment and assessment models even in classes VI to VIII.About the AuthorManash Pratim GohainManash Pratim Gohain is a seasoned journalist with over two decades at The Times of India, where he has built a rich body of work spanning education policy, politics, and governance.
