SC refuses interim stay on CBSE’s three-language policy NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to stay the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) three-language policy for the 2026-27 academic session, observing that ‘learning a language never goes waste’, while agreeing to hear petitions challenging the policy in detail next week.A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana issued notice on fresh petitions and scheduled the matter for hearing on Wednesday next week. The court, however, refused to grant any interim stay on the CBSE circulars at this stage.The petitions challenge the CBSE’s decision to implement the revised three-language policy from the current academic year. The petitioners argued that students studying in Class 9 would now have to study two Indian languages, forcing many to drop languages they had been learning since Class 5. They also raised concerns over English being treated as a non-native language under the policy, besides pointing to the lack of teachers and textbooks for several Indian languages.Appearing for one of the petitioners, senior advocate Anand Grover argued that the CBSE lacked the legal authority to issue such circulars.”The circulars are without authority of law. Only NCERT has authority, not CBSE. They are imposing languages without giving options. No teachers, no books are available if I want to learn Punjabi instead of Sanskrit. As a child, I must have the opportunity to learn a language which will give me employment,” he submitted.Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing in another batch of petitions, argued that the policy treated English as a ‘non-native’ language while making Indian languages compulsory, Live Law reported. “They have taken a 300-year-old language and treated English as a non-native language,” he said.Senior advocate Shyam Divan argued that although CBSE had diluted some provisions through a June 29 circular, major concerns remained. He submitted that while the National Education Policy (NEP) envisaged implementation by 2030, the CBSE had advanced it to the current academic year.Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi highlighted the practical difficulties for students already studying foreign languages.”A student of Class 9 who is studying French till date is told to take up a third language and give the examination in April. Unless you get a pass in internal assessment. How can anyone in Class 9 be told to start learning, say, Tamil? Which school in Delhi can provide a teacher who can teach?” he argued.Seeking interim relief, Sankaranarayanan said schools were not prepared to implement the policy.”We went to the NCERT website a few minutes ago. Only three books, not 22. Children are being told to drop English and other foreign languages and take up native languages. They had said that by July 1 textbooks would be ready. Teachers have to be ready for 22 languages. This is damaging the status quo,” he submitted.He also expressed concern that teachers of foreign languages could lose their jobs if schools were forced to alter language offerings.Responding to the submissions, Chief Justice Surya Kant remarked, “Learning of language never goes waste.”When Sankaranarayanan argued that teachers could be dismissed because of the policy, the CJI replied, “If dismissed, we can reinstate.”Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Union government, sought two weeks to file a response. The bench directed the Centre to submit its reply within 10 days.The court also heard submissions from intervenor Fauzia Khan, represented by advocates Rahul Shyam Bhandari and G Priyadharshini, who argued that the policy had adversely affected the mental health of children, particularly those from economically weaker sections.BackgroundThe hearing comes amid an ongoing legal challenge to CBSE’s revised three-language policy, introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.The Board has defended the policy, telling the Supreme Court that nearly half of its over 28,800 affiliated schools already teach two or more Indian languages in Class 9, while almost all have at least one Indian-language teacher. It has also said schools have been given flexibility in staffing during the transition period.CBSE has clarified that students can continue studying foreign languages such as French, German or Spanish either as one of the prescribed languages or as an additional fourth language. It has also introduced one-time relaxations for students already studying two non-Indian languages and said NCERT is preparing textbooks in all 22 Scheduled Languages to support implementation.The petitioners, however, contend that the policy was introduced abruptly, lacks adequate infrastructure and could disrupt students’ ongoing language education. Bankipur bypoll: Prashant Kishor declares Rs 96 crore assets; wife owns Rs 101.93 crore NEW DELHI: Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has filed his nomination for the Bankipur assembly bypoll in Bihar, declaring movable and immovable assets worth more than Rs 96 crore, according to his election affidavit.The poll strategist-turned-politician, popularly known as PK, is contesting from the BJP stronghold that fell vacant after the resignation of the party’s national president Nitin Nabin. Kishor filed his nomination papers after leading a padyatra in Patna, on Monday.According to the affidavit, Kishor has total assets worth over Rs 96 crore, including movable assets of Rs 22.19 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 73.87 crore. His wife has total declared assets of Rs 101.93 crore, comprising movable assets worth Rs 89.51 crore and immovable assets valued at Rs 12.42 crore. The affidavit also states that Kishor has Rs 65,570 in cash, while his wife has Rs 1,95,200 in cash.It further reveals that Kishor holds a 100% controlling stake in a private company, which donated Rs 85 crore to the Jan Suraaj Party and Rs 50 lakh to the Jan Suraaj Foundation during the 2024-25 financial year.As per the nomination papers, Kishor has eight pending criminal cases against him. However, the affidavit states that he has not been convicted in any criminal case.From public health to politicsBorn in Konar village in Rohtas district, Kishor completed his schooling in Buxar. His father, Shrikant Pandey, is a physician, while his mother, Sushila Pandey, is a homemaker. Anti-SP posters targeting Mulayam, Akhilesh ignite fresh political storm in UP NEW DELHI: Several posters targeting Samajwadi Party (SP) founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and party chief Akhilesh Yadav were displayed across several parts of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, triggering a political row. The Samajwadi Party accused the BJP and its allies of trying to inflame communal sentiments by labelling them as ‘anti-social elements’, while Uttar Pradesh minister and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar defended the posters, calling them ‘appropriate’. The posters were later removed following the controversy. The posters, displayed in Lucknow, Mathura, Sitapur, Barabanki and other places, carried the slogan “Dil mein Babar, munh mein Ram” (Babar in the heart, Ram on the lips). They showed Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav wearing caps commonly associated with the Muslim community. The identity of those behind the posters is yet to be established, PTI reported. After death, your digital life becomes someone else’s problem Somewhere on a server you’ll never see, your first Instagram post is still sitting there. So is that meme you saved at 2 am, the Spotify playlist you made for someone you don’t talk to anymore, and the Pinterest board of a wedding you haven’t planned. For a generation that has never known a version of itself that wasn’t documented, these aren’t throwaway digital clutter; they’re closer to a diary. Your phone probably knows you better than most of the people in your life.Here’s the strange part: when you die, the law mostly stops caring about you. Your rights end. But your data doesn’t. It stays exactly where it was, on a server in some data centre, encrypted, indexed, backed up, long after you’re not around to log in and check on it.So what actually happens to a digital life once the person living it is gone?It’s a bigger question than it sounds. Your digital footprint isn’t just the obvious stuff, the photos, the DMs, the tweets you’ve forgotten you sent. It’s every email, every voice note, every screenshot of a conversation you meant to delete. It’s the cryptocurrency wallet you set up once and forgot the password to. It’s your search history, your location data, your app usage, the quiet behavioural trail that platforms have been collecting in the background the whole time, whether you noticed or not.Put together, this is less a collection of files than a kind of second self, one built without much thought, and left behind without much of a plan. And increasingly, courts, tech companies, and lawmakers are being forced to answer a question none of them was prepared for: who does that second self belong to, once you’re not around to claim it?When Apple said no, a Gujarat court said yesA father dies without a will. His phone stays locked. And to get back into it, his family has to go to court.That’s what happened in Gandhinagar, where a civil court has ruled that a deceased person’s digital data, photographs, videos, documents, voice notes, form part of their estate and can be accessed by their legal heirs. The order came after Apple told the family it needed a court order before it would grant access to Shaishav Shah’s iPhone and iCloud account.Shah died in April 2025, intestate. His widow and daughter, Sur Shah, wanted into his locked iPhone and iCloud, not for anything financial, but for the photos, videos, voice notes, documents and contacts that were on it. Apple responded that it could reset the password on the iCloud account, but had no way to retrieve data off a physically locked device — and either way, it wanted a court order naming the family as the deceased’s legal representatives before it would act. .So the family, through advocate Jeet Bhatt, petitioned for a letter of administration under the Indian Succession Act. The widow filed a no-objection certificate in favour of her daughter. A public notice went out inviting objections. None came.The court’s reasoning is what makes this order significant. Additional senior civil judge Himanshu Choudhary held that the iCloud data “constitutes a valuable digital asset forming part of the estate of the deceased, capable of administration”, leaning on the broad definitions of “property” and “movable property” under laws like the General Clauses Act, 1897, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and even the Income Tax Act’s recognition of Virtual Digital Assets. On privacy, the court was equally direct: the right to privacy is personal, and it does not survive death.How big tech handles your deathIn the absence of any law telling them what to do, tech companies have quietly become the ones deciding what happens to a person’s digital life after death. There’s no court, no statute, no uniform standard, just each platform’s own internal policy, applied case by case.Here’s how the major ones handle it:Instagram memorialises the account of a person who has died; the profile stays up, but it’s frozen. No one can log into it, edit it, or see private messages. It becomes something closer to a tribute page than an active account.Facebook works similarly, but goes a step further with a “legacy contact”, someone the user names in advance who can manage the memorialised page, respond to friend requests, and pin a tribute post once the person is gone. What they can’t do is get into that person’s DMs. The messages stay locked, permanently.Apple lets users set up a legacy contact too, but only if it’s done ahead of time, while the account holder is still alive. Without that step, families are left going through Apple’s formal request process, and as the Gandhinagar case showed, that can mean a locked device, a locked iCloud account, and a request for a court order before Apple will act at all. .WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption means there’s effectively no back door. Even with a death certificate, next of kin, and every intention of respecting the person’s wishes, family members cannot get into someone’s chats. The encryption that protected the user in life protects the conversation in death too, from everyone, including the people left behind.Google’s Inactive Account Manager is the outlier, the most proactive of the lot. It lets users pre-select trusted contacts and decide, in advance, exactly what those contacts can access: Gmail, photos, drive, once the account has gone dormant for a set period. Set it up, and your family isn’t left guessing. Skip it, and they’re back to filing a discretionary request with no guarantee of a response.X (formerly Twitter) takes a more hands-off approach: inactive accounts are deactivated after six months, and the handle can be released back into circulation. Family members can request deactivation, but they need to prove the death first.Your data doesn’t know if it’s property or a secretNot everything in a digital estate is the same kind of thing, and that’s where this gets complicated. A cryptocurrency wallet or a paid subscription is a digital asset, closer to property, the kind of thing succession law already knows how to handle. A string of private messages, or a search history, is something else entirely. It’s personal. And the law hasn’t caught up to the difference.Legal experts have flagged this exact gap, that “digital assets” and “personal information” aren’t necessarily the same thing, and while some digital property fits cleanly within existing succession law, deeply personal data raises separate questions of privacy and consent that don’t just go away because someone has died. Handing a daughter access to her father’s photos is one thing. Handing her access to every message he ever sent, to anyone, is another, and rulings like Gandhinagar’s don’t really draw that line yet. .There’s also a quieter, opposite problem building in the background: what if there’s nothing left to inherit at all? India’s draft Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 include a provision requiring platforms to delete a person’s data if their account sits inactive for a set period, unless they’re legally required to retain it. Like Apple’s Legacy Contact and Google’s Inactive Account Manager, DPDP Act, 2023 allows users to nominate someone in advance to exercise their rights over their personal data after death or incapacity.So India is edging toward two different futures at once. One, where a family can go to court and claim a full digital estate. The other, where an unclaimed account simply expires, and the data disappears with it, nominee or not. And to get back into it, his family has to go to court.That’s what happened in Gandhinagar, where a civil court has ruled that a deceased person’s digital data, photographs, videos, documents, voice notes, form part of their estate and can be accessed by their legal heirs. The order came after Apple told the family it needed a court order before it would grant access to Shaishav Shah’s iPhone and iCloud account.Shah died in April 2025, intestate. His widow and daughter, Sur Shah, wanted into his locked iPhone and iCloud, not for anything financial, but for the photos, videos, voice notes, documents and contacts that were on it. Apple responded that it could reset the password on the iCloud account, but had no way to retrieve data off a physically locked device — and either way, it wanted a court order naming the family as the deceased’s legal representatives before it would act. .So the family, through advocate Jeet Bhatt, petitioned for a letter of administration under the Indian Succession Act. The widow filed a no-objection certificate in favour of her daughter. A public notice went out inviting objections. None came.The court’s reasoning is what makes this order significant. Additional senior civil judge Himanshu Choudhary held that the iCloud data “constitutes a valuable digital asset forming part of the estate of the deceased, capable of administration”, leaning on the broad definitions of “property” and “movable property” under laws like the General Clauses Act, 1897, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and even the Income Tax Act’s recognition of Virtual Digital Assets. On privacy, the court was equally direct: the right to privacy is personal, and it does not survive death.How big tech handles your deathIn the absence of any law telling them what to do, tech companies have quietly become the ones deciding what happens to a person’s digital life after death. There’s no court, no statute, no uniform standard, just each platform’s own internal policy, applied case by case.Here’s how the major ones handle it:Instagram memorialises the account of a person who has died; the profile stays up, but it’s frozen. No one can log into it, edit it, or see private messages. It becomes something closer to a tribute page than an active account.Facebook works similarly, but goes a step further with a “legacy contact”, someone the user names in advance who can manage the memorialised page, respond to friend requests, and pin a tribute post once the person is gone. What they can’t do is get into that person’s DMs. The messages stay locked, permanently.Apple lets users set up a legacy contact too, but only if it’s done ahead of time, while the account holder is still alive. Without that step, families are left going through Apple’s formal request process, and as the Gandhinagar case showed, that can mean a locked device, a locked iCloud account, and a request for a court order before Apple will act at all. .WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption means there’s effectively no back door. Even with a death certificate, next of kin, and every intention of respecting the person’s wishes, family members cannot get into someone’s chats. The encryption that protected the user in life protects the conversation in death too, from everyone, including the people left behind.Google’s Inactive Account Manager is the outlier, the most proactive of the lot. It lets users pre-select trusted contacts and decide, in advance, exactly what those contacts can access: Gmail, photos, drive, once the account has gone dormant for a set period. Set it up, and your family isn’t left guessing. Skip it, and they’re back to filing a discretionary request with no guarantee of a response.X (formerly Twitter) takes a more hands-off approach: inactive accounts are deactivated after six months, and the handle can be released back into circulation. Family members can request deactivation, but they need to prove the death first.Your data doesn’t know if it’s property or a secretNot everything in a digital estate is the same kind of thing, and that’s where this gets complicated. A cryptocurrency wallet or a paid subscription is a digital asset, closer to property, the kind of thing succession law already knows how to handle. A string of private messages, or a search history, is something else entirely. It’s personal. And the law hasn’t caught up to the difference.Legal experts have flagged this exact gap, that “digital assets” and “personal information” aren’t necessarily the same thing, and while some digital property fits cleanly within existing succession law, deeply personal data raises separate questions of privacy and consent that don’t just go away because someone has died. Handing a daughter access to her father’s photos is one thing. Handing her access to every message he ever sent, to anyone, is another, and rulings like Gandhinagar’s don’t really draw that line yet. .There’s also a quieter, opposite problem building in the background: what if there’s nothing left to inherit at all? India’s draft Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 include a provision requiring platforms to delete a person’s data if their account sits inactive for a set period, unless they’re legally required to retain it. Like Apple’s Legacy Contact and Google’s Inactive Account Manager, DPDP Act, 2023 allows users to nominate someone in advance to exercise their rights over their personal data after death or incapacity.So India is edging toward two different futures at once. One, where a family can go to court and claim a full digital estate. The other, where an unclaimed account simply expires, and the data disappears with it, nominee or not. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday said the existing arrangement at the disputed Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Mosque complex in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar would remain ad hoc and subject to the final outcome of the pending petitions. The court also assured both the Hindu and Muslim sides that it was prepared to hear the matter on a day-to-day basis to resolve the dispute.According to news agency PTI, the bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohan was hearing a batch of appeals challenging the Madhya Pradesh high court’s May 15 judgment declaring the disputed Bhojshala complex in Dhar district a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati.The court also directed that if the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) carries out any structural alterations at the site, “they shall not be given effect to without its permission.” It clarified that the present arrangement for the Muslim side would remain temporary pending the final adjudication of the case. The top court has also directed separate open space to be provided to Muslims adjacent to disputed site for offering namaz on Friday between 1 and 3 pm.Calling the dispute highly sensitive, the bench reportedly urged restraint from all sides, “These are very sensitive matters. What is being said in court can unnecessarily create controversies or send wrong impression. We have to be very careful about every expression used.”According to PTI, The bench further observed, “This is the first time that the issue relating to the interim arrangement is coming before us. The high court’s order and the helplessness of the State in maintaining law and order are also being taken note of. Our view is that whatever arrangement is presently in place, the matter can be listed before an appropriate bench within 10 to 15 days.”The matter had been mentioned before the court on Monday by senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi and advocate Nizam Pasha, appearing for the Muslim appellants, who sought an urgent hearing. The Chief Justice had then asked them to remove defects in the petitions and assured an early listing.On May 15, the Madhya Pradesh high court held that the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Mosque complex is a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati and quashed a decades-old ASI order that had permitted the Muslim community to offer Friday prayers at the site.Get the latest India news and live updates. NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs on Tuesday registered a strong protest against the continued attacks on vessels carrying Indian seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz by Iran.According to a statement, the ministry said that India is deeply concerned by the attacks on two vessels, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, during their transit through the Strait of Hormuz.”India is deeply concerned by the attacks on two vessels, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, during their transit through the Strait of Hormuz today. NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday intensified his attack on the Centre over recurring examination paper leaks, citing the cancellation of the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) and accusing the system of failing lakhs of candidates.In a post on X, Rahul made three demands to the Maharashtra government, urging an immediate announcement of a fresh examination date, strict action against those responsible for the leak, and relief measures for affected aspirants.”Maharashtra TET paper leaked, exam cancelled. 6 lakh candidates left in limbo. Two weeks have passed, no trace of a new date. The leakers roam free, the system remains spotless, and the one paying the price is the one who toiled with honesty,” Rahul wrote.He said the affected candidates were future teachers who had spent years preparing for the examination, paid application fees, and travelled to distant examination centres, only to be left waiting “without a date, without answers.””These are the country’s working and future teachers, the ones who hold India’s future in their hands – these are the very people who prepared year after year, filled out forms, paid fees, traveled to far-flung centers. And now they’re just waiting, without a date, without answers,” he wrote.Further addressing Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Rahul Gandhi issued a three-point demand, making an immediate announcement of a fresh Maharashtra TET schedule the centrepiece of his appeal.He urged the state government to announce the new examination date without further delay, take strict action against those responsible for the paper leak instead of penalising candidates, and grant age limit relaxations to aspirants whose eligibility may have been affected by the postponement.He wrote, “Chief Minister ji, three things, today itself: Timeline: Announce the new TET date right now; Accountability: Action against those responsible for the leak, not against the candidates; Protecting the future: Those whose year was ruined by this leak should get age limit relaxations.”Rahul said the government must act swiftly to restore confidence among lakhs of candidates left in uncertainty following the cancellation of the examination, arguing that the burden of administrative failures should not fall on those who had prepared honestly for years.He further said, “The mistake is the institution’s, the punishment the candidate’s, this is not justice.”He also announced that he would hold a public interaction on July 17 in Dehradun, where he would address the broader issue of paper leaks.”On July 17 in Dehradun, I will discuss the growing crisis of paper leaks with you in detail. NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday intensified his attack on the Centre over recurring examination paper leaks, citing the cancellation of the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) and accusing the system of failing lakhs of candidates.In a post on X, Rahul made three demands to the Maharashtra government, urging an immediate announcement of a fresh examination date, strict action against those responsible for the leak, and relief measures for affected aspirants.”Maharashtra TET paper leaked, exam cancelled. 6 lakh candidates left in limbo. Two weeks have passed, no trace of a new date. The leakers roam free, the system remains spotless, and the one paying the price is the one who toiled with honesty,” Rahul wrote.He said the affected candidates were future teachers who had spent years preparing for the examination, paid application fees, and travelled to distant examination centres, only to be left waiting “without a date, without answers.””These are the country’s working and future teachers, the ones who hold India’s future in their hands – these are the very people who prepared year after year, filled out forms, paid fees, traveled to far-flung centers. And now they’re just waiting, without a date, without answers,” he wrote.Further addressing Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Rahul Gandhi issued a three-point demand, making an immediate announcement of a fresh Maharashtra TET schedule the centrepiece of his appeal.He urged the state government to announce the new examination date without further delay, take strict action against those responsible for the paper leak instead of penalising candidates, and grant age limit relaxations to aspirants whose eligibility may have been affected by the postponement.He wrote, “Chief Minister ji, three things, today itself: Timeline: Announce the new TET date right now; Accountability: Action against those responsible for the leak, not against the candidates; Protecting the future: Those whose year was ruined by this leak should get age limit relaxations.”Rahul said the government must act swiftly to restore confidence among lakhs of candidates left in uncertainty following the cancellation of the examination, arguing that the burden of administrative failures should not fall on those who had prepared honestly for years.He further said, “The mistake is the institution’s, the punishment the candidate’s, this is not justice.”He also announced that he would hold a public interaction on July 17 in Dehradun, where he would address the broader issue of paper leaks.”On July 17 in Dehradun, I will discuss the growing crisis of paper leaks with you in detail. NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh police on Monday registered a case against a American national -named Jordan Brown- after he was apprehended for entering Nepal without proper authorisation or valid documents, officials told news agency ANI.According to officials, a case has been registered against him at the Sonauli Police Station under Sections 21/23 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act for entering India without valid documents.What we know so farAccording to Additional SP (Maharajganj) Siddharth, Brown was spotted near the Sonauli border by security personnel during a routine patrol. When asked to stop, he allegedly tried to flee but was overpowered and taken into custody.Officials found that Brown was not carrying a passport, visa or any other identity document at the time of his detention.”On July 11, the SSB apprehended an individual near Sonauli for attempting to enter Nepal without authorisation,” Additional SP said.”During questioning, he (Brown) revealed that he had travelled to Thailand on a tourist visa, where he lost his passport. He subsequently reached Sri Lanka via a sea route and arrived in India from there by sea on November 2, 2025. Since then, he had been residing in Goa. He was attempting to travel to Nepal when the SSB apprehended him,” he added.He also told officials that he had travelled to Bali, Indonesia, in May before returning to India, and had spent nearly two months in the country without carrying his passport.SHO Mahendra Mishra said Brown identified himself as a native of California and claimed to have travelled to 70 countries.Brown further claimed he studied at the University of California and served in the US Navy and Special Forces for six years before leaving the military around two years ago.He told police that he arrived in Goa from the United States about two months ago, stayed there for nearly six weeks, and then travelled to Bengaluru.From Bengaluru, Brown claimed he boarded a bus to Lucknow on July 8, continued to Gorakhpur, and later hired a taxi to reach the Sonauli border.He alleged that an acquaintance in Bengaluru was in possession of his passport. However, officials said he failed to provide complete addresses or verifiable details about the person.Brown also claimed he met an Indian woman from Uttarakhand in Italy three years ago and married her in October 2024. After conservative treatment in Iraq failed to provide relief over several years, he travelled to India seeking treatment.The patient’s extreme body weight posed major surgical and anaesthetic challenges. Excessive weight not only makes surgical exposure and implant positioning more difficult but also places significantly higher mechanical stress on the artificial joint, requiring meticulous planning and specialised implants.The surgery, performed at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, was led by Dr (Prof. ) Anil Arora, Chairman and Head of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement. The surgery was completed without complications, and postoperative X-rays confirmed satisfactory positioning and stability of the implants.Following the operation, the patient underwent supervised physiotherapy and rehabilitation aimed at strengthening the muscles around the operated hip and gradually restoring mobility. NEW DELHI: Since environmentalist-activist Sonam Wangchuk began his indefinite fast here in solidarity with the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) campaign against alleged irregularities in NEET, political developments have moved at a fast pace in his own backyard, Ladakh. The Ladakh administration on Monday announced its decision to constitute autonomous hill development councils for each of its seven districts, barely 10 days after it had, along with the Centre, convinced the Ladakh representatives to finally sign the minutes of May 22 meeting with the home ministry, in which Wangchuk was one of the key negotiators.On both the occasions — July 3, when the minutes of May 22 meeting were finalised, and Monday, when the councils for every Ladakh district were announced — Wangchuk was here in the Capital, fasting.Announcing the move to set up autonomous councils in the newly-created districts of Nubra, Changthang, Sham, Zanskar and Drass, in addition to Leh and Kargil that already have these councils, Ladakh chief secretary Ashish Kundra told a press conference in Leh that it is a “major step towards democratic decentralisation and grassroots governance”.\The seven councils will have full powers set out in the LAHDC Act. “The new districts shall get the same authority that Leh has held since 1995 and Kargil since 2003, not a reduced version of it,” he underlined. The councils will have authority over land ownership and land allotment within the district. They will regulate recruitment and promotions for district cadre posts.The councils — which will exist alongside Panchayati Raj institutions — shall hold a dedicated council fund and can levy taxes and fees. Each new district will have a revenue base of its own and formulate development plans. They will handle health, education and tourism, along with local infrastructure and social welfare schemes.Though the May 22 talks between Union home ministry officials and Ladakh bodies Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) here had witnessed a breakthrough with the two sides agreeing in principle on creation of elected bodies at UT-level and district level with “full legislative, executive, financial and administrative powers” and Constitutional safeguards under Article 371, the Ladakh representatives later objected to the minutes of the meeting omitting the assurances on Article 371 and control over bureaucracy. These concerns were finally ironed out at a meeting in Leh on June 3, leading to signing of the minutes.Kundra on Monday told TOI that the forthcoming talks shall focus on the structure of the UT-level elected body as well as the scope of safeguards under Article 371. Both sides are finalising their respective drafts in this regard, and a date will eventually be set to discuss them, he said.The chief secretary said the model of UT and district level bodies proposed in Ladakh has no parallel elsewhere in the country and will draw on the best features of other arrangements. The UT will have elected representation at the village, district and Union Territory levels, he said.“Some rebalancing of powers between the councils and the UT body may follow,” said Kundra.Section 3(1) of the LAHDC Act already provides for a council for every district, to be constituted from a date the government notifies in the gazette. NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Tuesday urged Sonam Wangchuk to call off his indefinite hunger strike as the climate activist’s indefinite fast against examination irregularities and the NEET paper leak controversy reached Day 17.In a post on X, Moitra said Wangchuk had achieved his objective as his fast had united the country’s youth in their fight for justice.”Sonam Sir your fast has united this country’s youth in their war for justice. Your goal is reached. Govt doesn’t care about your life or that of crores of youth. But your life matters to us. Pls call off fast & continue the fight,” Moitra said.Earlier on Monday, a group of eminent citizens, including writer Arundhati Roy, actors Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, and economist Jayati Ghosh, also appealed to the protesters on indefinite hunger strike to end their fast, while extending full support to their demand for Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.In a joint statement, the signatories said they were “immensely grateful” to the protesters for leading the agitation against the government but expressed deep concern over their worsening health.”We salute your sense of purpose, the determination and courage with which you are spearheading this movement for students and youth across the country,” the statement said.Appealing to the protesters to end their fast, they said, “We request you to please consider ending this hunger strike immediately in the interests of the longer and more difficult struggle ahead. This battle is a marathon, not a sprint, and we need you, your strength and leadership in the days to come.”According to the organisers, Wangchuk has lost 8.2 kilograms since he began fasting. His latest medical parameters showed a blood pressure of 107/70 mmHg and a blood glucose level of 67 mg/dL.Meanwhile, AISA activist Deepak was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after his health deteriorated following 16 days of fasting.In a statement, AISA said Deepak had lost around 15 per cent of his body weight and his blood pressure had fallen to 80/40 mmHg over the past three days, prompting doctors to advise immediate hospitalisation due to the risk of organ damage.Addressing a press conference, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke questioned why the government had not initiated talks with the protesters despite the prolonged agitation and the deteriorating health of those on hunger strike.”I request the government not to turn this into a battle of egos as human lives are at stake. Acknowledging a mistake is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of maturity, accountability and the willingness to correct course. All we are asking for is accountability,” he said.As Wangchuk’s fast entered Day 16, comparisons were also drawn with activist Anna Hazare’s 12-day hunger strike in support of the Jan Lokpal movement in 2011.Hazare initially went on hunger strike on April 5, 2011, withdrawing it four days later after the then Union government formed a committee to examine his demands. NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Tuesday urged Sonam Wangchuk to call off his indefinite hunger strike as the climate activist’s indefinite fast against examination irregularities and the NEET paper leak controversy reached Day 17.In a post on X, Moitra said Wangchuk had achieved his objective as his fast had united the country’s youth in their fight for justice.”Sonam Sir your fast has united this country’s youth in their war for justice. Your goal is reached. Govt doesn’t care about your life or that of crores of youth. But your life matters to us. Pls call off fast & continue the fight,” Moitra said.Earlier on Monday, a group of eminent citizens, including writer Arundhati Roy, actors Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, and economist Jayati Ghosh, also appealed to the protesters on indefinite hunger strike to end their fast, while extending full support to their demand for Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.In a joint statement, the signatories said they were “immensely grateful” to the protesters for leading the agitation against the government but expressed deep concern over their worsening health.”We salute your sense of purpose, the determination and courage with which you are spearheading this movement for students and youth across the country,” the statement said.Appealing to the protesters to end their fast, they said, “We request you to please consider ending this hunger strike immediately in the interests of the longer and more difficult struggle ahead. This battle is a marathon, not a sprint, and we need you, your strength and leadership in the days to come.”According to the organisers, Wangchuk has lost 8.2 kilograms since he began fasting. His latest medical parameters showed a blood pressure of 107/70 mmHg and a blood glucose level of 67 mg/dL.Meanwhile, AISA activist Deepak was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after his health deteriorated following 16 days of fasting.In a statement, AISA said Deepak had lost around 15 per cent of his body weight and his blood pressure had fallen to 80/40 mmHg over the past three days, prompting doctors to advise immediate hospitalisation due to the risk of organ damage.Addressing a press conference, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke questioned why the government had not initiated talks with the protesters despite the prolonged agitation and the deteriorating health of those on hunger strike.”I request the government not to turn this into a battle of egos as human lives are at stake. Acknowledging a mistake is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of maturity, accountability and the willingness to correct course. All we are asking for is accountability,” he said.As Wangchuk’s fast entered Day 16, comparisons were also drawn with activist Anna Hazare’s 12-day hunger strike in support of the Jan Lokpal movement in 2011.Hazare initially went on hunger strike on April 5, 2011, withdrawing it four days later after the then Union government formed a committee to examine his demands. In August 2011, Hazare again launched a hunger strike, which lasted 12 days.Asked why Wangchuk and the others were still fasting while Hazare’s 2011 hunger strike ended after 12 days, Dipke said, “That was a different India… In today’s India, human lives are not valued.”He also criticised the government for not being concerned about the health of Wangchuk, a Magsaysay awardee and noted educator and innovator.The CJP protest began on June 20, while Wangchuk joined the agitation on June 28 and has remained on an indefinite hunger strike since.Get the latest India news and live updates. Representative image NEW DELHI: Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) has cancelled the registration of resolution professional Chandra Prakash Jain after an ED investigation into at least 10 corporate insolvency resolution processes (CIRPs) linked to Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd (RCFL) pointed to an alleged nexus among parties involved in the insolvency proceedings.The probe showed Jain had ignored “substantial financial red flags, interconnected transactions, auditor qualifications, missing records, low realisations, non-cooperation and the SEBI order” and failed to exercise the degree of due diligence required.Acting on the ED report, which was based on evidence seized during the searches conducted on actors and entities linked to Reliance Commercial Finance Limited, the IBBI said “the IBC (Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code) framework was being misused as a tool of tax avoidance, corporate restructuring with mala fide objectives, money laundering, etc.”The IBBI mentioned analyses of 10 CIRPs where Jain was the resolution professional and where the creditors, put together, got Rs 30 lakh against admitted claims totalling Rs 1,433 crore. National Medical Commission (TNN) NEW DELHI: Medical colleges will no longer be allowed to seek approval to increase MBBS seats while their hospitals or academic buildings are still under construction, under draft amendments proposed by the National Medical Commission (NMC).The draft regulations require institutions to have all prescribed infrastructure and statutory approvals before applying. Temporary buildings and work-in-progress projects will not be considered.NMC has also proposed rejecting incomplete applications without allowing institutions to rectify deficiencies. Applications lacking mandatory documents specified by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) will be treated as invalid.Applicants must submit a valid consent of affiliation from a recognised university and a solvency certificate issued within 90 days before the application deadline.The draft also proposes a mandatory corpus fund for medical colleges, with the amount fixed by MARB. Ram Mandir Trust sets criteria for CEO post LUCKNOW: Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra invited applications Monday for its first chief executive officer (CEO), aiming to professionalise the running of Ayodhya’s Ram temple a month after cash-counting agents were allegedly found to have stolen donations to the shrine.The CEO aspirant must be a graduate between 50 and 70 and, according to the notification, also “an actively practising Hindu”. Being a Ram devotee from the Vaishnava tradition will be treated as an additional attribute. The appointment will be for a three-year term and the last date for applications is July 18, a copy of the notification posted on the trust’s X handle said.The CEO will report to the trust’s general secretary and must have at least 20 years of managerial experience in a large public organisation, institution, govt department or company, with expertise across administration, finance, human resources, public relations, IT, security and legal affairs. “Preference will be given to candidates who have served as chief administrative officer or have experience in managing a temple or Hindu religious institution. Retired officers meeting the eligibility criteria may also apply,” the notification states. Emoluments will be finalised after “mutual” discussions.A 15-point annexure to the notification spells out the CEO’s brief. The appointee will be responsible for framing standard operating procedures, systems, processes and protocols for the temple’s day-to-day functions. All conditions in the original trust deed must be followed, and approvals sought from the general secretary and permanent trust members before any decision is implemented. The CEO will work independently under the trust’s supervision.The trust decided at its July 6 meeting to bring in a CEO after six cash-counting agents were among the eight arrested on suspicion of stealing cash, ornaments and other valuables from the ‘hundis’ (donation boxes) while counting and making inventories.The resignations of ex-general secretary Champat Rai and senior trust member Anil Mishra, who held administrative and financial powers, were accepted at the same meeting and member and retired IFS officer Krishna Mohan was appointed interim general secretary. A three-member search panel comprising a retired HC judge, retired LG and former nuclear scientist, was also constituted the same day.
