NEW DELHI: Speculation is rife over a possible change in the equations of Maharashtra politics after leaders from both factions of the Nationalist Congress Party met chief minister Devendra Fadnavis at his official residence.However, news agency PTI, citing sources, reported that Jayant Patil met Fadnavis at his official residence, ‘Varsha’, in Mumbai late on Tuesday night regarding an issue in his Uran-Ishwarpur constituency in Sangli district.Declining to elaborate, sources told PTI that Patil and ruling NCP leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare did not meet the chief minister together.The meeting comes as buzz over a possible merger of the two factions gathered pace once again.In the days following the plane crash of Ajit Pawar, several members of the NCP (SP) had said that Ajit Pawar had initiated talks with senior leader Jayant Patil for the merger. However, NCP leaders, including Tatkare and national president Praful Patel, had refuted these claims.Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut played down the reported meeting, claiming that rumours about Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress are being spread deliberately”Jayant Patil is an important leader of the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) and also a key leader of the Maha Vikas Aghadi. These rumours about Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress are being spread deliberately,” Raut said. “The BJP and the Shinde faction have not accomplished much, so such rumours are being circulated. It seeks urgent directions to the Centre and the Delhi government to shift the activist to a government hospital as concerns grow over his deteriorating health during an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.The petition, filed by activist lawyer Rakesh Kumar Saini, comes as organisers claim that Sonam Wangchuk has lost around 8.5 kg.According to the petition, Wangchuk’s condition has worsened significantly, and he could lose his life within two days if the hunger strike continues. It urged the court to intervene immediately, arguing that saving his life is of paramount importance.”If he passes away, it would be a matter of great shame for the country and the world,” the plea stated.The PIL accused the government of failing in its duty of care towards the activist. It alleged that the government was treating Wangchuk “like a hardcore criminal, terrorist or traitor to the nation” and was “not at all concerned about him”. The petition argued that the authorities should ensure he receives medical care, even against his wishes if necessary.”The simple thing to be done is to take him to a government hospital and force feed him the necessary nutrients, vitamins and minerals by way of a liquid diet which are necessary for the human body to survive,” it said.The petition contends that although peaceful protest and hunger strikes are democratic rights, the State has a constitutional duty to protect the life and health of every citizen.It further argues that allowing Wangchuk’s condition to deteriorate without intervention would amount to a failure of the government’s constitutional and public responsibilities. Referring to provisions on abetment of suicide under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the plea submits that authorities cannot remain passive when a person’s life is in imminent danger.The PIL has been filed with a request for urgent listing, which could have led to the matter being heard by the Delhi High Court on Tuesday. Senior advocate Aparajita Singh, appearing for NGO ‘Cure SMA Foundation’, informed a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana that these comedians had reneged on their undertaking to the court.”They have filed affidavits informing the court that they could not invite NGO members to their show as they did not have their contact details and have tried to appear magnanimous by offering donations,” she said, adding Raina and others appeared to be on an “ego trip”.”We do not need their donations. The NGO is a body of well-accomplished parents whose children suffer from the rare spinal muscular atrophy disease, whose treatment is very expensive. We do not want to participate in their show when they have such an arrogant attitude,” Singh said on behalf of the NGO. The bench was particularly severe on Raina and accused him of lying and taking the court for a ride by brazenly violating his own undertaking to the apex court.”The way he is treating persons with physical disabilities, what kind of youth icon is he?” it asked.Expressing solidarity with the NGO, solicitor general Tushar Mehta said India’s youth had better icons and Raina could at best be a self-proclaimed social media influencer. “Recently, he started a show with stringed lemon and chillies and told his audience that he earlier got into trouble because he did not do this exercise as if to mock the SC,” he said.The bench, which had initially slapped a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Raina, later reduced it to Rs 3 lakh and asked the other four – Vipul Goyal, Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakur and Nishat Jagdish Tanwar – to also pay Rs 3 lakh costs each within two weeks. The bench also warned that none of them should think that they could say and do anything sitting on foreign soil. “We had shown leniency earlier. Instead of cashing in on it, you audaciously breached the undertaking. As an artist, you are in public life and who other than you can understand what respect and dignity mean. For an Indian walking the grounds in southwest London this past fortnight, there was another striking sight: the sheer number of familiar faces from home.Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill seemed to be everywhere. One moment, he was chatting with Roger Federer, whose post-retirement reinvention as a style icon has only added to his allure. Photographs of the duo swept across social media. Next, Gill was in the Royal Box alongside Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali.Shubman GillWimbledon dubbed Gill the “Prince of Indian cricket”. In an interview with the hosts, Gill returned the compliment, calling Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, both two-time champions here, the “princes of tennis”.Gill picked Federer as his greatest tennis inspiration.“People associate him with being very effortless,” he said. “When I started playing cricket, people also used to call me effortless, but then, you know, how much effort goes into making it look effortless to people.”Beyond the baselineFor India’s sporting and entertainment elite, Wimbledon has become more than a tennis tournament. According to Sally Bolton, chief executive officer of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, that growing visibility is no accident. In its bid to reach new audiences at home and abroad, Wimbledon has consciously broadened its appeal beyond tennis.“That’s how we’ve used the intersectionality of sport with culture, fashion, celebrity,” Bolton told TOI. “It’s using that space, talking about The Championships to a new audience, who might not be natural tennis fans, and who might grow an affinity for Wimbledon for reasons that go beyond the tennis.”The strategy has produced striking results in India.“I remember we had Rohit Sharma and Sachin Tendulkar here in 2024,” Bolton said. “They were in the Royal Box and they posted a few pictures on social media. The scale of engagement we got from what was a relatively simple thing was enormous in India. People who may never have really thought about tennis before, that kind of gave them a reason to ask, what is Wimbledon? And might I be interested in that?”Indian cricketers at Wimbledon are hardly a new phenomenon. In Cricket Delightful, Mushtaq Ali wrote that the Indian team touring Britain in 1936 was invited to Wimbledon, where its members watched Fred Perry in action. That was 90 years ago.The faces have changed, but the fascination remains.Tennis LifersAsk Ravi Shastri, the cricketer-turned-coach-turned-commentator for whom tennis was his first sport.“I played tennis first and then shifted to cricket,” he said. “I knew as much about tennis records as I knew about cricket records of the 70s. Even now, I follow tennis.”Shastri has been coming to Wimbledon since 1982, when Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova won the singles titles. In 2019, he was seated behind the umpire’s chair during the men’s final, in which Roger Federer lost to Novak Djokovic after holding two championship points.Shastri, then coach of the Indian cricket team, was seated almost level with the court and was struck by the sound and speed of the game.“You see how hard they hit the ball. And how it flies, you watch their footwork, the way they move. It was unbelievable,” he said.Having attended three of the four Grand Slams, including the Australian Open and Roland Garros, Shastri places Wimbledon above the rest.“It has tradition, it has history; the rules don’t bend that easily there,” he said. “Strawberries and cream, Pimms… and every time you go there, it grows on you more. It’s something different. You know that right from the moment you walk through that gate and enter the grounds. It is a whole different vibe.”Ravi ShastriFor Lara Dutta Bhupathi, Miss Universe 2000 and actor, Wimbledon also represents something more personal. Her connection comes through her husband, Mahesh Bhupathi, who won three Wimbledon titles — one in men’s doubles and two in mixed doubles.“My introduction to Wimbledon is very different from the others in Bollywood,” Lara said.Each summer, Mahesh, Lara and their daughter Saira make what has become an annual pilgrimage to SW19.“It’s a different feeling now when we walk around the grounds. As I walked past the player restaurant, I remember Saira was crawling around the place then. Representative image NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate has informed Supreme Court that NBFC entities of Reliance ADAG – Reliance Home Finance Ltd and Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd – had siphoned off parts of Rs 15,500 crore, they had raised from banks, through “an intricate network of 53 shell and group entities under control of R-ADAG”.ED sources said the agency gave details of the investigation carried out against different R-ADAG companies in the alleged siphoning scam to a bench led by CJI Surya Kant Monday. It said the ongoing probe found that 35 banks and financial institutions lent money to the two banks without proper documentation or credible credit appraisal. So far, assets worth Rs 5,500 crore have been attached.Sources said Reliance Communications (RCom) group companies diverted parts of over Rs 40,000 crore they had raised from 2007 onwards, ” towards acquisition of a luxury yacht ‘Tian’ and a luxury condominium in Manhattan, New York”. They claimed these assets were subsequently sold during the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process, and the sale proceeds were allegedly diverted to Dubai. RCom’s assets worth approximately Rs 15,000 crore have been attached. In both cases, group MDs – Amitabh Jhunjhunwala and Gautam Doshi – have been arrested with other top officials, they said.Agency sources said they had detected Rs 200 crore of public funds being siphoned off in connection with NHAI tenders by Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. In connected FEMA proceedings, the adjudicating authority has confirmed seizure of approximately Rs 77 crore.They said Reliance Power Ltd had furnished a forged bank guarantee issued by a non-existent foreign bank for participation in a tender and it led to loss of Rs 105 crore to the exchequer.Since April 28, the agencies have carried out 19 search operations and ED has attached properties worth Rs 1,021 crore. ED has filed an additional prosecution complaint in the RHFL-RCFL matter, where proceeds of crime were quantified at Rs 15,548 crore after verifying the complete trail of funds. As many as 55 people have been arraigned as accused in the complaint, ED said. It added so far, assets valued at Rs 20,367 crore have been attached, including Anil Ambani’s residence at Pali Hill, Mumbai, Reliance Centre properties in Delhi and Mumbai, and shareholding in flagship companies including R-Infra and Reliance Power.Get the latest India news and live updates. Representative image Thailand will allow 30-day visa-exempted entries by visitors from India after a proposal to scrap visa-free entry led arrivals from the country to drop in a blow to the vital tourism industry.An initial proposal, which had not come into effect despite being approved by the cabinet in May, had caused confusion for Indian travellers and resulted in a decline of arrivals from the country, tourism minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said after a cabinet meeting. “The cabinet therefore approved a 30-day visa-free entry to align with the travel behaviour of Indian tourists, who represent a large market for Thailand,” Surasak told reporters. “If problems arise from this measure in the future, govt can review it then.”Indian tourists, the third-biggest group of visitors to Thailand this year behind China and Malaysia, are currently allowed to stay 60 days without a visa. That had been set to end after Thailand in May announced the elimination of visa-free entry for tourists from 93 countries and territories. Under that proposal, Thailand would have given 30-day visa waivers to just 54 countries and territories.The new waiver plan, which now accounts for all 27 EU member states, may help Thailand in ongoing negotiations for Schengen visa exemptions for Thai passport holders, a govt spokesperson said.PM Anutin Charnvirakul’s new conservative govt has sought to curb foreigners who exploit Thailand’s visa-free policies to carry out illicit activities, as part of a wider crackdown on transnational scam operations. Representative image Thailand will allow 30-day visa-exempted entries by visitors from India after a proposal to scrap visa-free entry led arrivals from the country to drop in a blow to the vital tourism industry.An initial proposal, which had not come into effect despite being approved by the cabinet in May, had caused confusion for Indian travellers and resulted in a decline of arrivals from the country, tourism minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said after a cabinet meeting. “The cabinet therefore approved a 30-day visa-free entry to align with the travel behaviour of Indian tourists, who represent a large market for Thailand,” Surasak told reporters. “If problems arise from this measure in the future, govt can review it then.”Indian tourists, the third-biggest group of visitors to Thailand this year behind China and Malaysia, are currently allowed to stay 60 days without a visa. That had been set to end after Thailand in May announced the elimination of visa-free entry for tourists from 93 countries and territories. Under that proposal, Thailand would have given 30-day visa waivers to just 54 countries and territories.The new waiver plan, which now accounts for all 27 EU member states, may help Thailand in ongoing negotiations for Schengen visa exemptions for Thai passport holders, a govt spokesperson said.PM Anutin Charnvirakul’s new conservative govt has sought to curb foreigners who exploit Thailand’s visa-free policies to carry out illicit activities, as part of a wider crackdown on transnational scam operations. File photo: Supreme Court of India NEW DELHI: Moving towards promptly answering litigants’ midnight knocks on the doors of constitutional courts for protection of life and liberty, Supreme Court Tuesday agreed to attempt devising a standard operating procedure (SOP) to expeditiously hear such petitions even after the courts’ official working time.A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana entertained a PIL by advocate Maheravish Rein, who complained that when litigants face emerging situations threatening their life and liberty, there is no process available for them to approach the constitutional courts, which becomes important when the police is hand-in-glove with the oppressors.The petitioner cited a case relating to an inter-faith marriage where police were approached by the couple for security. Instead of providing security, police took the girl away and handed her to her parents at a place away from the police station, she said.Rein said that she knocked on the doors of the Delhi HC chief justice and CJI in Nov last year but got no response, adding that the Supreme Cuurt registrar asked her to wait till morning.Justice Bagchi said there is a system in place in Supreme Court and each HC to deal with urgent petitions involving life and liberty issues. “It is not that there is no system. What was wrong was the response given at the access point for filing the petition.”CJI Kant has periodically stated that courts should aim to function 24×7 like hospitals to promptly address the pain and sufferings of the common man. He added that the court has no difficulty in listing urgent matters for hearing, but in many cases, these are required to be scrutinised by the registry as most such petitions are drafted badly and convey a very vague picture.Solicitor general Tushar Mehta suggested that it should be restricted to cases where infringement of life and liberty is apprehended and not to any other category as any leeway given by the court would flood it with commercial litigations citing urgency.The bench agreed with the SG and said that only petitions relating to life and liberty would be considered for urgent listing. The SG also suggested that the SOP can be framed on the administrative side by Supreme Court.However, the CJI decided to seek suggestions from HCs and the registry of Supreme Court, saying if the SOP is to be applied to HCs for urgent hearing of petitions beyond court hours, it should also apply to the Supreme Court.Get the latest India news and live updates. Urging de-escalation, the govt sought an immediate end to attacks on commercial vessels.In a statement, govt said India is deeply concerned by the attacks on two vessels, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, during their transit through the Strait on Tuesday.Both vessels were carrying 30 Indian seafarers, among their combined crew of 46. The attacks on commercial vessels have intensified since the renewal of US-Iran hostilities.”Of the 12 Indian nationals onboard MT Al Bahiyah, one has tragically lost his life and another has been injured,” the MEA said. The registration must also be formally cancelled if the relationship ends. Failure to register a live-in relationship could attract imprisonment of up to three months, it says. The UCC bill is likely to be introduced in the assembly’s monsoon session beginning July 20.The draft also says that parents of individuals entering a live-in relationship will be informed of their relationship status. Local police stations will maintain records of all registered live-in couples within their respective jurisdictions.The proposed UCC also empowers any person, including a neighbour or the landlord of the rented accommodation where the couple resides, to report an unregistered live-in relationship. Another provision states that if a man leaves his live-in partner, he will be liable to provide maintenance to her.The draft also proposes key changes to inheritance laws. At present, a deceased man’s property is generally inherited by his wife, children and mother. Under the proposed code, the father will also become an heir and will be entitled to a share in the property. The term “mother” is proposed to be replaced with “parents”, ensuring that if the mother is no longer alive, the father will continue to have inheritance rights.The committee constituted to draft the UCC has submitted its final report to the state govt. Personal and family matters such as marriage, divorce, maintenance, succession and inheritance are currently governed by different personal laws.It said there was a need to create a uniform and practical legal framework. South China Sea NEW DELHI: The government has reiterated its position on the South China Sea issue, saying India emphasises the importance of upholding freedom of navigation and overflight, other lawful uses of the sea and unimpeded commerce consistent with United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).The ministry of external affairs (MEA) was responding to queries about a joint statement by the US, Japan, the Philippines and 11 other countries which said China’s expansive claim in South China Sea has no legal basis.The joint statement marked the 10th anniversary of a landmark international tribunal ruling in favour of the Philippines in 2016 that had rejected China’s sweeping claim of sovereignty in South China Sea. File photo: Supreme Court of India NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday raised the issue of whether English could be considered an indigenous language as it refused to stay the implementation of CBSE’s decision to make the three-language scheme mandatory for Class 6 from the current academic session.CBSE’s plan, it said, appeared to advance the constitutional goal of promoting Hindi and regional languages.It, however, was reluctant to allow the plea for staying the three-language scheme without a detailed hearing.Books for only 3 of 22 languages made available on NCERT website: CounselAs a host of senior advocates challenged the scheme despite CBSE rolling back its instructions to make the three-language scheme mandatory for Class IX from the current academic session, a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana sought responses from the Centre and CBSE.It, however, was reluctant to allow the plea to stay the scheme without a detailed hearing. “The notification is carrying ahead the constitutional goal of learning Hindi and other regional languages. Nomenclature of indigenous languages and what constitutes indigenous language may require a relook,” said the bench as it posted the matter for hearing on July 22.On behalf of fresh petitioners, the counsel argued that though children had been given a choice of 22 languages, it was impossible for schools to employ those many teachers and create infrastructure. They said books for only three of the 22 languages were available on the NCERT website despite promises that all would be uploaded by July 1.Additional solicitor general Aishwa-rya Bhati said govt and CBSE would file their responses in 10 days.The Centre, in its response to the earlier petitions, said, “National Education Policy envisions an education system rooted in Indian ethos that contributes directly to transforming India, that is Bharat, sustainably into an equitable and vibrant knowledge society.”It said according to NEP, the three-language formula would continue to be implemented while keeping in mind constitutional provisions, aspirations of the people, regions and the Union, and the need to promote multilingualism as well as promote national unity. “However, there will be greater flexibility in the three-language formula, and no language will be imposed on any state,” the Centre said.Get the latest India news and live updates. File photo: Supreme Court of India NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday raised the issue of whether English could be considered an indigenous language as it refused to stay the implementation of CBSE’s decision to make the three-language scheme mandatory for Class 6 from the current academic session.CBSE’s plan, it said, appeared to advance the constitutional goal of promoting Hindi and regional languages.It, however, was reluctant to allow the plea for staying the three-language scheme without a detailed hearing.Books for only 3 of 22 languages made available on NCERT website: CounselAs a host of senior advocates challenged the scheme despite CBSE rolling back its instructions to make the three-language scheme mandatory for Class IX from the current academic session, a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana sought responses from the Centre and CBSE.It, however, was reluctant to allow the plea to stay the scheme without a detailed hearing. “The notification is carrying ahead the constitutional goal of learning Hindi and other regional languages. Nomenclature of indigenous languages and what constitutes indigenous language may require a relook,” said the bench as it posted the matter for hearing on July 22.On behalf of fresh petitioners, the counsel argued that though children had been given a choice of 22 languages, it was impossible for schools to employ those many teachers and create infrastructure. They said books for only three of the 22 languages were available on the NCERT website despite promises that all would be uploaded by July 1.Additional solicitor general Aishwa-rya Bhati said govt and CBSE would file their responses in 10 days.The Centre, in its response to the earlier petitions, said, “National Education Policy envisions an education system rooted in Indian ethos that contributes directly to transforming India, that is Bharat, sustainably into an equitable and vibrant knowledge society.”It said according to NEP, the three-language formula would continue to be implemented while keeping in mind constitutional provisions, aspirations of the people, regions and the Union, and the need to promote multilingualism as well as promote national unity. “However, there will be greater flexibility in the three-language formula, and no language will be imposed on any state,” the Centre said.Get the latest India news and live updates. File photo: Union minister Nitin Gadkari NEW DELHI: Nitin Gadkari rejected allegations of a conflict of interest and personal gain over his push for the ethanol blending programme. The road transport and highways minister said he had always backed alternative fuels to reduce vehicular pollution and India’s import bill.Gadkari said the attacks are “politically motivated”. He told TOI that his sons’ business had a small share of ethanol and their contribution to the overall kitty was meagre. Besides, he said, the business had a debt of Rs 1,600 crore and he was in no way associated with it or in fixing the price or its procurement.The minister insisted the ethanol blending programme dated back to the days of the Vajpayee govt and was also backed by UPA administration, with then oil minister Mani Shankar Aiyar supporting it in Parliament.He asserted that he has not just supported ethanol from sugarcane, but also from maize, stubble and bamboo. Moreover, he has pushed for all other types of alternative fuels, including methanol, hydrogen and electric vehicles.Gadkari said the claims on social media lacked substance and there was a major disinformation campaign. Although he admitted that fuel efficiency is likely to be affected while driving on highways, he dismissed claims of engine damage to vehicles, arguing that even carmakers such as Maruti had not seen any impact.‘If you don’t want E20, you can buy 100% petrol, but pay more’Road transport & highways minister Nitin Gadkari, who has been criticised over E20 fuel, says misinformation has been weaponised against him and govt. In a chat with TOI’s Dipak Dash, he defends his push for alternative fuels — ethanol-blended petrol, methanol, hydrogen and electric vehicles — to reduce pollution and cut India’s dependence on crude imports. Excerpts:Q) There has been widespread criticism against you and govt’s ethanol blending programme with fears of vehicles getting damaged and loss of mileage.The campaign is politically motivated. Certain people are targeting me and govt. There is also misinformation about E20 fuel damaging engines. All E10-compliant vehicles are fit for using E20 fuel. There have been no complaints so far about the fuel damaging engine.Maruti Suzuki has publicly stated so. Auto manufacturers offer guarantees on vehicles. There are people in your office who are using two-wheelers and petrol cars, how many have faced a problem? A few days ago, I had asked people to write to my ministry in case they are facing any problems with their vehicles. There has been no complaint so far.E20 fuel was launched after being properly tested. As for mileage, in city traffic in Delhi or Mumbai, you will not see any major change, there may be some loss when you are driving at high speed on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. I have always said there is a minor mileage loss due to low calorific value of ethanol compared to petrol.Q) People allege you have personal interest in promoting ethanol and your family has also gained from the ethanol blending programme. What’s your response?I have been speaking about ethanol for a long time. This is not a programme that came up overnight, it started during Atal Bihari Vajpayee govt. In 2005, during UPA govt, then petroleum minister Mani Shankar Aiyar had spoken about continuing the programme in Parliament. The sugar factory belongs to my family and it predates the whole conversation around ethanol. That business is run by my sons, the programme is run by the petroleum ministry and the price is decided by the Cabinet.So, I have no influence over it. Ethanol is just 10% of the business and the factories run by my sons have less than 0.5% share of the ethanol business in the country. The companies have a debt of Rs 1,600 crore. Lot of lies are being spread.I am a strong believer in alternative fuels, whether it is ethanol blended petrol, electric vehicles, methanol or hydrogen — all cleaner options that will reduce pollution, especially in a city like Delhi, where vehicles contribute up to 40% of air pollution. Shouldn’t the road transport support steps to reduce vehicular pollution?Moreover, it lowers import dependence as India is a large importer of oil. Also, I am not only advocating only sugarcane-based ethanol. In fact, started with maize, which helped farmers in Bihar and UP, who were getting prices below MSP. I have also been supporting ethanol from rice, parali (stubble) and the kind that is produced by bamboo in Assam; stubble, which is a problem in Haryana and Punjab, is being used for producing ethanol at Panipat.West Asian countries and the US have enough oil, but look at Brazil, which has surplus sugar and has been using ethanol for decades. Their vehicles have not suffered any problems. Indonesia and Thailand are going for biofuel.Q) Is there any possibility for providing E10 fuel at petrol pumps, which many say would address people’s concerns?How is it possible when we have achieved 20% ethanol blending and E20 fuel is available at every fuel station in the country? People who do not want ethanol blended fuel can go for 100% petrol, but they will have to pay more.Q) Can we have multiple dispensers at petrol pumps with different levels of ethanol blending so that people can decide?It won’t be appropriate for me to comment as it is for the petroleum ministry to decide. At some petrol pumps people have the option to buy E85 (85% ethanol blended petrol) for use in flex fuel vehicles (FFVs). Over half a dozen vehicle manufacturers are ready to launch such vehicles. E85 costs less than E20. So, people have a choice.Q) There are a lot of concerns over the quality of highways. Is it because the focus has been on speeding up construction?I have reviewed 950 highway projects and there is zero tolerance for poor quality construction. I am getting stretches checked and have asked officers to take strict action against those who’ve compromised on quality. There is a concerted effort to target me and the govt. The road transport and highways minister said he had always backed alternative fuels to reduce vehicular pollution and India’s import bill.Gadkari said the attacks are “politically motivated”. He told TOI that his sons’ business had a small share of ethanol and their contribution to the overall kitty was meagre. Besides, he said, the business had a debt of Rs 1,600 crore and he was in no way associated with it or in fixing the price or its procurement.The minister insisted the ethanol blending programme dated back to the days of the Vajpayee govt and was also backed by UPA administration, with then oil minister Mani Shankar Aiyar supporting it in Parliament.He asserted that he has not just supported ethanol from sugarcane, but also from maize, stubble and bamboo. Moreover, he has pushed for all other types of alternative fuels, including methanol, hydrogen and electric vehicles.Gadkari said the claims on social media lacked substance and there was a major disinformation campaign. Although he admitted that fuel efficiency is likely to be affected while driving on highways, he dismissed claims of engine damage to vehicles, arguing that even carmakers such as Maruti had not seen any impact.‘If you don’t want E20, you can buy 100% petrol, but pay more’Road transport & highways minister Nitin Gadkari, who has been criticised over E20 fuel, says misinformation has been weaponised against him and govt. In a chat with TOI’s Dipak Dash, he defends his push for alternative fuels — ethanol-blended petrol, methanol, hydrogen and electric vehicles — to reduce pollution and cut India’s dependence on crude imports. Excerpts:Q) There has been widespread criticism against you and govt’s ethanol blending programme with fears of vehicles getting damaged and loss of mileage.The campaign is politically motivated. Certain people are targeting me and govt. There is also misinformation about E20 fuel damaging engines. All E10-compliant vehicles are fit for using E20 fuel. There have been no complaints so far about the fuel damaging engine.Maruti Suzuki has publicly stated so. Auto manufacturers offer guarantees on vehicles. There are people in your office who are using two-wheelers and petrol cars, how many have faced a problem? A few days ago, I had asked people to write to my ministry in case they are facing any problems with their vehicles. There has been no complaint so far.E20 fuel was launched after being properly tested. As for mileage, in city traffic in Delhi or Mumbai, you will not see any major change, there may be some loss when you are driving at high speed on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. I have always said there is a minor mileage loss due to low calorific value of ethanol compared to petrol.Q) People allege you have personal interest in promoting ethanol and your family has also gained from the ethanol blending programme. What’s your response?I have been speaking about ethanol for a long time. This is not a programme that came up overnight, it started during Atal Bihari Vajpayee govt. In 2005, during UPA govt, then petroleum minister Mani Shankar Aiyar had spoken about continuing the programme in Parliament. The sugar factory belongs to my family and it predates the whole conversation around ethanol. That business is run by my sons, the programme is run by the petroleum ministry and the price is decided by the Cabinet.So, I have no influence over it. Ethanol is just 10% of the business and the factories run by my sons have less than 0.5% share of the ethanol business in the country. The companies have a debt of Rs 1,600 crore. Lot of lies are being spread.I am a strong believer in alternative fuels, whether it is ethanol blended petrol, electric vehicles, methanol or hydrogen — all cleaner options that will reduce pollution, especially in a city like Delhi, where vehicles contribute up to 40% of air pollution. Shouldn’t the road transport support steps to reduce vehicular pollution?Moreover, it lowers import dependence as India is a large importer of oil. Also, I am not only advocating only sugarcane-based ethanol. In fact, started with maize, which helped farmers in Bihar and UP, who were getting prices below MSP. I have also been supporting ethanol from rice, parali (stubble) and the kind that is produced by bamboo in Assam; stubble, which is a problem in Haryana and Punjab, is being used for producing ethanol at Panipat.West Asian countries and the US have enough oil, but look at Brazil, which has surplus sugar and has been using ethanol for decades. Their vehicles have not suffered any problems. Indonesia and Thailand are going for biofuel.Q) Is there any possibility for providing E10 fuel at petrol pumps, which many say would address people’s concerns?How is it possible when we have achieved 20% ethanol blending and E20 fuel is available at every fuel station in the country? People who do not want ethanol blended fuel can go for 100% petrol, but they will have to pay more.Q) Can we have multiple dispensers at petrol pumps with different levels of ethanol blending so that people can decide?It won’t be appropriate for me to comment as it is for the petroleum ministry to decide. At some petrol pumps people have the option to buy E85 (85% ethanol blended petrol) for use in flex fuel vehicles (FFVs). Over half a dozen vehicle manufacturers are ready to launch such vehicles. E85 costs less than E20. So, people have a choice.Q) There are a lot of concerns over the quality of highways. Is it because the focus has been on speeding up construction?I have reviewed 950 highway projects and there is zero tolerance for poor quality construction. I am getting stretches checked and have asked officers to take strict action against those who’ve compromised on quality. There is a concerted effort to target me and the govt. Representative image JAMMU: A Jammu court has directed the crime branch inquiry officer to appear in person with the complete record in a case linked to the alleged “fake silver” offerings Rs worth Rs 500cr at Vaishno Devi shrine after objections were raised over the agency’s handling of a complaint seeking registration of an FIR.The case first came to light on April 21, when Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board sent around 20 tonnes of accumulated offerings to a govt mint for melting and storage.Officials conducting the assay were surprised to find that the metal contained only about 5-6% of actual silver. The govt mint further raised alarm about the presence of cadmium, which closely resembles silver in colour but is highly toxic.On Monday, chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Jammu, Munish Kumar Manhas, ordered the officer to remain personally present along with the relevant record on the next date of hearing, fixed for July 29.The court complaint was filed by advocate Deepak Sharma, who alleged no action was taken on his complaint submitted to the crime branch on May 9.The complaint has sought a detailed investigation into whether devotees had been sold fake or adulterated silver articles by vendors and jewellers, or whether genuine silver offerings had been pilfered at any stage after their receipt, including during inventory, weighing, storage, transportation, assaying or melting.Get the latest India news and live updates.
