NCP dismisses notice challenging Sunetra Pawar’s election as party president NEW DELHI: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare on Tuesday dismissed a notice issued by the party’s national secretary Sachchidanand questioning the election of Sunetra Pawar as the party’s national president, while asserting that there was no rift within the organisation.The leaders said the election was held in accordance with the party constitution and that the notice carried no legal or organisational significance.The controversy comes after Sachchidanand, through a Delhi-based law firm, issued a notice on July 9 alleging that Sunetra Pawar’s election as NCP president on February 26 was unconstitutional and should be declared null and void.Reacting to the notice, Praful Patel told PTI, “There is no rift in the party. All senior party leaders meet with Sunetra Pawar to discuss political issues. The letter written by Sachchidanand carries no weight. Any issue should be resolved amicably in the interest of the party.”NCP Maharashtra president Sunil Tatkare termed the notice ‘illegal’ and said the party would first examine its legal validity.”The election was completely valid,” Tatkare told reporters. He added that the meeting of the national executive to elect the president and working president was conducted strictly in accordance with the party constitution.He said the party’s core committee would meet shortly, seek legal advice on the notice and then decide its response.On whether the party had contacted Sachchidanand or was considering disciplinary action against him, Tatkare said he had not spoken to the national secretary and was unaware whether anyone from the party’s Delhi unit had done so.”We will first examine the legal validity of the notice. In my view, there is absolutely no substance in it. The entire process followed by the party was in accordance with its constitution and rules,” he said.Tatkare said the party’s core committee would decide whether Sachchidanand’s letter amounted to indiscipline.Responding to questions about internal party documents repeatedly surfacing in the public domain, Tatkare said the NCP remained united under Sunetra Pawar’s leadership.”Today, the party is united under the leadership of Sunetra Pawar. It is working across the state and the country in an organised manner.””Just because one person writes a letter, it does not mean there is discontent in the party. Ours is a democratic organisation where individuals can express their views, but the party moves forward according to its collective decisions,” he added.When asked why the notice specifically questioned Sunetra Pawar’s election, Tatkare pointed out that notices had also been issued to Praful Patel and declined to speculate on the motives behind targeting particular leaders.In the notice, Sachchidanand claimed that after the death of then NCP president Ajit Pawar in an air crash on January 28, the party had informed the Election Commission that Praful Patel would serve as acting national president until a new chief was elected.However, he alleged that general secretary Brijmohan Shrivastav convened the national convention and initiated the election process without constitutional authority.According to the notice, no duly constituted central election authority, returning officer or election schedule was put in place and delegates were denied an opportunity to nominate candidates, contest or vote.Sachchidanand also demanded that the party withdraw letters sent to the Election Commission on February 28, March 10 and April 29 informing it about the election and office-bearers, and sought fresh organisational elections under an independent election authority.The notice also referred to the revised list of national office-bearers submitted to the Election Commission, in which the names of Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare were reportedly either omitted or shown without their official designations. The party had earlier described this as a typographical error.Meanwhile, Tatkare said the party’s core group would seek a meeting with Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss the finance portfolio, which was held by the late Ajit Pawar before his death and is currently with the chief minister.He also announced that the NCP would organise a week-long programme from July 22 to mark Ajit Pawar’s birth anniversary.Get the latest India news and live updates. Central expert panel approves environmental clearance for 1,000 MW Naying hydro-power project of Arunachal Pradesh NEW DELHI: An expert panel of the Union environment ministry has recommended green clearance to the 1,000 MW Naying hydro-electric project, paving the way for other statutory clearances and construction of this run-of-the-river project across the Siyom River in Siang and Shi-Yomi districts, close to the India-China border, in Arunachal Pradesh.Environmental clearance (EC) of the project was pending for a long time. It will be constructed at an estimated cost of more than Rs 11,835 crore in an area of over 470 hectares by the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation, giving a major boost to renewable energy in the region.The EC was approved for the project by an expert appraisal committee (EAC) of the ministry with certain mandatory environmental conditions in its 57th meeting on June 29-30.Though a total of 12 villages will be affected due to acquisition of land for various components of the proposed project, the panel accepted the detailed plan of the project proponent for relief and rehabilitation of the displaced families.“Land acquired for the project shall be suitably compensated in accordance with the prevailing guidelines of the state govt and provisions under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013,” said the panel in its conditional approval.After getting EC, the project proponent will now obtain forest clearance under the provisions of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1986, in case of the diversion of forest land for non-forest purpose and clearance from the National Board for Wildlife, if applicable.The minutes of the meeting, released on Monday, however, claimed that no project component falls in any notified protected area. “There are no national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves, Tiger/Elephant Reserves, Wildlife corridors etc. within 10 km distance from the project site,” it said.Compensatory afforestation, wildlife conservation, air quality monitoring/ preservation; noise monitoring/ prevention; waste management; and risk mitigation and disaster management are among the other conditions attached to the EC. “The project authorities must strictly adhere to the stipulations made by the State Pollution Control Board and the state govt,” said the minutes of the meeting.Get the latest India news and live updates. NEW DELHI: The West Bengal government on Tuesday withdrew its appeal before the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta high court’s May 2024 judgment that struck down the inclusion of 77 communities, including 75 Muslim communities, in the state’s Other Backward Classes (OBC) list.The Supreme Court allowed the withdrawal after the state informed the court that the West Bengal Cabinet had decided not to pursue the appeal.A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana permitted the withdrawal after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the state, informed the court of the Cabinet’s decision.The appeal had originally been filed by the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. The withdrawal comes after the BJP assumed power in West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections.The West Bengal Backward Classes Commission also withdrew its separate appeal against the high court’s judgment.Senior advocate Shadan Farasat, appearing for some affected persons, sought liberty to pursue separate special leave petitions (SLPs).While allowing the withdrawals, the Supreme Court clarified that its order would not prevent any other aggrieved party from challenging the Calcutta high court judgment.On November 6, 2025, the apex court had directed that no further proceedings be held before the Calcutta high court in the matter while hearing multiple petitions challenging the verdict.In May 2024, the Calcutta high court struck down the inclusion of 77 communities in the state’s OBC list, holding that the reservation granted to them was legally unsustainable. NEW DELHI: The West Bengal government on Tuesday withdrew its appeal before the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta high court’s May 2024 judgment that struck down the inclusion of 77 communities, including 75 Muslim communities, in the state’s Other Backward Classes (OBC) list.The Supreme Court allowed the withdrawal after the state informed the court that the West Bengal Cabinet had decided not to pursue the appeal.A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana permitted the withdrawal after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the state, informed the court of the Cabinet’s decision.The appeal had originally been filed by the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. The withdrawal comes after the BJP assumed power in West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections.The West Bengal Backward Classes Commission also withdrew its separate appeal against the high court’s judgment.Senior advocate Shadan Farasat, appearing for some affected persons, sought liberty to pursue separate special leave petitions (SLPs).While allowing the withdrawals, the Supreme Court clarified that its order would not prevent any other aggrieved party from challenging the Calcutta high court judgment.On November 6, 2025, the apex court had directed that no further proceedings be held before the Calcutta high court in the matter while hearing multiple petitions challenging the verdict.In May 2024, the Calcutta high court struck down the inclusion of 77 communities in the state’s OBC list, holding that the reservation granted to them was legally unsustainable. Of the 77 communities, 75 were Muslim communities. NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday called for an artificial intelligence-driven economic transition that protects jobs, social security and human dignity, while Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) pressed for alternative economic models to tackle poverty, unequal wealth distribution and vulnerabilities faced by workers under the free-market system.At the inaugural session of the BRICS Trade Union Forum Summit 2026, labour minister Mansukh Mandaviya said India’s approach to global governance was rooted in its “Humanity First” philosophy and stressed that the gains from technology-led growth must reach workers on the shop floor.“The transition into a digital, AI-driven economy must remain worker-centric, equitable and protective of human dignity,” Mandaviya said. As technology reshapes industries, he added, the focus must shift towards universal social protection and digital inclusion.“True progress is achieved only when the benefits of growth extend directly to the shop floor,” the minister said.BMS, which organised the summit, said the global economic order must provide equitable labour rights and formal protection to workers at the last mile. The trade union forum will examine socioeconomic frameworks aimed at ensuring genuine poverty alleviation, representative decision-making and fairer distribution of wealth.BMS national president and summit chairperson Sunkari Mallesham said the prosperity of workers was inseparable from national and global progress. “When workers prosper, nations prosper. When nations cooperate, humanity prospers,” he said.The two-day summit has brought together over 46 international delegates and around 70 representatives of Indian trade unions, besides academics and labour experts. Delegates from Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa, as well as representatives of the International Labour Organization, are participating in the deliberations.The summit will focus on four broad areas — universal social security, human-centric use of technology, future-ready skills and women’s participation in the changing world of work.Discussions on social security will examine the international portability of benefits for migrant and cross-border workers. SC reprimanded Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up comedian Samay Raina and YouTubers Ranveer Allahbadia and Ashish Chanchlani for failing to comply with its earlier directions, observing that they are self-styled youth icons.A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana made the observation after being informed that Raina had not invited persons with disabilities to his show in compliance with its earlier order.”We have no reason to doubt that Samay Raina has taken the court for a ride. He is in brazen violation of statements/ undertakings given before this court. The misconduct is sought to be compounded by stating that a compliance affidavit was filed yesterday, however, no affidavit has been filed,” the bench said.The Chief Justice remarked that they appeared to believe that staying outside the country placed them beyond the court’s jurisdiction.”Let them suffer now. If this is not arrogance, then we have to change the Oxford dictionary also,” the bench added.Row over remarks on SMAThe Supreme Court was hearing a plea filed by the Cure SMA India Foundation, which alleged that Raina made insensitive remarks about the high cost of treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and ridiculed a person with the condition.During the hearing, senior advocate Aparajita Singh, appearing for the organisation, told the court that Raina had never contacted the foundation to invite its members to any of his shows.The plea also referred to jokes made by “India’s Got Latent” host Samay Raina and social media influencers Vipun Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar.Highlighting the need for stronger legal safeguards to protect the dignity of persons with disabilities, the Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Centre to consider enacting a law to make derogatory remarks mocking persons with disabilities and rare genetic disorders a penal offence, on the lines of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.Asking them to be mindful of their conduct in future, the bench directed Raina and the other comedians to hold two programmes or shows every month highlighting the success stories of persons with disabilities (PwDs) to raise funds for the treatment of persons with disabilities, particularly those suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).Get the latest India news and live updates. SC reprimanded Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up comedian Samay Raina and YouTubers Ranveer Allahbadia and Ashish Chanchlani for failing to comply with its earlier directions, observing that they are self-styled youth icons.A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana made the observation after being informed that Raina had not invited persons with disabilities to his show in compliance with its earlier order.”We have no reason to doubt that Samay Raina has taken the court for a ride. He is in brazen violation of statements/ undertakings given before this court. The misconduct is sought to be compounded by stating that a compliance affidavit was filed yesterday, however, no affidavit has been filed,” the bench said.The Chief Justice remarked that they appeared to believe that staying outside the country placed them beyond the court’s jurisdiction.”Let them suffer now. If this is not arrogance, then we have to change the Oxford dictionary also,” the bench added.Row over remarks on SMAThe Supreme Court was hearing a plea filed by the Cure SMA India Foundation, which alleged that Raina made insensitive remarks about the high cost of treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and ridiculed a person with the condition.During the hearing, senior advocate Aparajita Singh, appearing for the organisation, told the court that Raina had never contacted the foundation to invite its members to any of his shows.The plea also referred to jokes made by “India’s Got Latent” host Samay Raina and social media influencers Vipun Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar.Highlighting the need for stronger legal safeguards to protect the dignity of persons with disabilities, the Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Centre to consider enacting a law to make derogatory remarks mocking persons with disabilities and rare genetic disorders a penal offence, on the lines of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.Asking them to be mindful of their conduct in future, the bench directed Raina and the other comedians to hold two programmes or shows every month highlighting the success stories of persons with disabilities (PwDs) to raise funds for the treatment of persons with disabilities, particularly those suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).Get the latest India news and live updates. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal (ANI photo) NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday said the ongoing protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are the result of Pakistan’s “decades-long systemic exploitation and denial of fundamental rights”. The MEA accused Islamabad of responding to public dissent with excessive force instead of addressing people’s grievances.The remarks were made by ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a media briefing, where he also responded to questions on several foreign policy issues, including the ongoing crisis in West Asia.Responding to a question on the protests in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Jaiswal said, “The ongoing protests in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir are a direct consequence of Pakistan’s decades-long systemic exploitation, denial of fundamental rights and administrative operation in areas under its illegal and forcible occupation. Rather than addressing the legitimate grievances of the local population, the Pakistani state has responded with excessive police brutality… We expect and hope that the international community will hold Pakistan fully accountable for these egregious abuses and misdeeds.”India has consistently maintained that Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and has repeatedly accused Pakistan of human rights violations and suppressing the rights of people living in the region.Besides the protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the MEA also responded to developments in West Asia.The MEA said it is closely monitoring the situation in West Asia and called for safe and uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz after attacks on commercial vessels in the region.Randhir Jaiswal said India was deeply concerned over the attacks on two ships in which one Indian seafarer was killed.”We are closely following the developments in West Asia. We continue to call for safe and unimpeded navigation and the flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz. This is key for ensuring the economic and energy security of people across the world,” he said.Government sources quoted by news agency ANI later said 13 Indians have been killed and three are missing in the Gulf region since February 28, 2026.On reports that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina plans to return to Bangladesh later this year, Jaiswal said, “Regarding the statement or interview given by the former Bangladesh Prime Minister, there has been no change in our approach to this matter…Any extradition matter is a legal issue, and it will be dealt with accordingly.”Responding to a question on fugitive businessman Nirav Modi, he said, “… Legal proceedings in the matter are on. Once those legal proceedings are completed, then he will be extradited to India.”On the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) statement linking the Lawrence Bishnoi gang to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Jaiswal said, “We have noted the remarks made by the RCMP (The Royal Canadian Mounted Police) Deputy Commissioner. These remarks are consistent with the recently unsealed US indictment, which attributes responsibility to the members of the Lawrence Bishnoi organised crime group. SC refuses interim stay on CBSE’s three-language policy NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to stay the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) three-language policy for the 2026-27 academic session, observing that ‘learning a language never goes waste’, while agreeing to hear petitions challenging the policy in detail next week.A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana issued notice on fresh petitions and scheduled the matter for hearing on Wednesday next week. The court, however, refused to grant any interim stay on the CBSE circulars at this stage.The petitions challenge the CBSE’s decision to implement the revised three-language policy from the current academic year. The petitioners argued that students studying in Class 9 would now have to study two Indian languages, forcing many to drop languages they had been learning since Class 5. They also raised concerns over English being treated as a non-native language under the policy, besides pointing to the lack of teachers and textbooks for several Indian languages.Appearing for one of the petitioners, senior advocate Anand Grover argued that the CBSE lacked the legal authority to issue such circulars.”The circulars are without authority of law. Only NCERT has authority, not CBSE. They are imposing languages without giving options. No teachers, no books are available if I want to learn Punjabi instead of Sanskrit. As a child, I must have the opportunity to learn a language which will give me employment,” he submitted.Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing in another batch of petitions, argued that the policy treated English as a ‘non-native’ language while making Indian languages compulsory, Live Law reported. “They have taken a 300-year-old language and treated English as a non-native language,” he said.Senior advocate Shyam Divan argued that although CBSE had diluted some provisions through a June 29 circular, major concerns remained. He submitted that while the National Education Policy (NEP) envisaged implementation by 2030, the CBSE had advanced it to the current academic year.Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi highlighted the practical difficulties for students already studying foreign languages.”A student of Class 9 who is studying French till date is told to take up a third language and give the examination in April. Unless you get a pass in internal assessment. How can anyone in Class 9 be told to start learning, say, Tamil? Which school in Delhi can provide a teacher who can teach?” he argued.Seeking interim relief, Sankaranarayanan said schools were not prepared to implement the policy.”We went to the NCERT website a few minutes ago. Only three books, not 22. Children are being told to drop English and other foreign languages and take up native languages. They had said that by July 1 textbooks would be ready. Teachers have to be ready for 22 languages. This is damaging the status quo,” he submitted.He also expressed concern that teachers of foreign languages could lose their jobs if schools were forced to alter language offerings.Responding to the submissions, Chief Justice Surya Kant remarked, “Learning of language never goes waste.”When Sankaranarayanan argued that teachers could be dismissed because of the policy, the CJI replied, “If dismissed, we can reinstate.”Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Union government, sought two weeks to file a response. SC refuses interim stay on CBSE’s three-language policy NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to stay the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) three-language policy for the 2026-27 academic session, observing that ‘learning a language never goes waste’, while agreeing to hear petitions challenging the policy in detail next week.A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana issued notice on fresh petitions and scheduled the matter for hearing on Wednesday next week. The court, however, refused to grant any interim stay on the CBSE circulars at this stage.The petitions challenge the CBSE’s decision to implement the revised three-language policy from the current academic year. The petitioners argued that students studying in Class 9 would now have to study two Indian languages, forcing many to drop languages they had been learning since Class 5. They also raised concerns over English being treated as a non-native language under the policy, besides pointing to the lack of teachers and textbooks for several Indian languages.Appearing for one of the petitioners, senior advocate Anand Grover argued that the CBSE lacked the legal authority to issue such circulars.”The circulars are without authority of law. Only NCERT has authority, not CBSE. They are imposing languages without giving options. No teachers, no books are available if I want to learn Punjabi instead of Sanskrit. As a child, I must have the opportunity to learn a language which will give me employment,” he submitted.Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing in another batch of petitions, argued that the policy treated English as a ‘non-native’ language while making Indian languages compulsory, Live Law reported. “They have taken a 300-year-old language and treated English as a non-native language,” he said.Senior advocate Shyam Divan argued that although CBSE had diluted some provisions through a June 29 circular, major concerns remained. He submitted that while the National Education Policy (NEP) envisaged implementation by 2030, the CBSE had advanced it to the current academic year.Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi highlighted the practical difficulties for students already studying foreign languages.”A student of Class 9 who is studying French till date is told to take up a third language and give the examination in April. Unless you get a pass in internal assessment. How can anyone in Class 9 be told to start learning, say, Tamil? Which school in Delhi can provide a teacher who can teach?” he argued.Seeking interim relief, Sankaranarayanan said schools were not prepared to implement the policy.”We went to the NCERT website a few minutes ago. Only three books, not 22. Children are being told to drop English and other foreign languages and take up native languages. They had said that by July 1 textbooks would be ready. Teachers have to be ready for 22 languages. This is damaging the status quo,” he submitted.He also expressed concern that teachers of foreign languages could lose their jobs if schools were forced to alter language offerings.Responding to the submissions, Chief Justice Surya Kant remarked, “Learning of language never goes waste.”When Sankaranarayanan argued that teachers could be dismissed because of the policy, the CJI replied, “If dismissed, we can reinstate.”Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Union government, sought two weeks to file a response. Bankipur bypoll: Prashant Kishor declares Rs 96 crore assets; wife owns Rs 101.93 crore NEW DELHI: Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has filed his nomination for the Bankipur assembly bypoll in Bihar, declaring movable and immovable assets worth more than Rs 96 crore, according to his election affidavit.The poll strategist-turned-politician, popularly known as PK, is contesting from the BJP stronghold that fell vacant after the resignation of the party’s national president Nitin Nabin. Kishor filed his nomination papers after leading a padyatra in Patna, on Monday.According to the affidavit, Kishor has total assets worth over Rs 96 crore, including movable assets of Rs 22.19 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 73.87 crore. His wife has total declared assets of Rs 101.93 crore, comprising movable assets worth Rs 89.51 crore and immovable assets valued at Rs 12.42 crore. The affidavit also states that Kishor has Rs 65,570 in cash, while his wife has Rs 1,95,200 in cash.It further reveals that Kishor holds a 100% controlling stake in a private company, which donated Rs 85 crore to the Jan Suraaj Party and Rs 50 lakh to the Jan Suraaj Foundation during the 2024-25 financial year.As per the nomination papers, Kishor has eight pending criminal cases against him. However, the affidavit states that he has not been convicted in any criminal case.From public health to politicsBorn in Konar village in Rohtas district, Kishor completed his schooling in Buxar. Anti-SP posters targeting Mulayam, Akhilesh ignite fresh political storm in UP NEW DELHI: Several posters targeting Samajwadi Party (SP) founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and party chief Akhilesh Yadav were displayed across several parts of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, triggering a political row. The Samajwadi Party accused the BJP and its allies of trying to inflame communal sentiments by labelling them as ‘anti-social elements’, while Uttar Pradesh minister and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar defended the posters, calling them ‘appropriate’. The posters were later removed following the controversy. The posters, displayed in Lucknow, Mathura, Sitapur, Barabanki and other places, carried the slogan “Dil mein Babar, munh mein Ram” (Babar in the heart, Ram on the lips). They showed Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav wearing caps commonly associated with the Muslim community. The identity of those behind the posters is yet to be established, PTI reported. The controversy comes amid an ongoing political battle over the alleged embezzlement of Ram temple donation funds in Ayodhya, an issue that has dominated political exchanges in recent weeks.In Sitapur, SP workers removed the posters after they were put up near the highway and Kanshiram Colony on the bypass.Samajwadi Party MP Anand Bhadauria personally removed one of the hoardings along with party workers and termed the incident ‘an act of cowardice.'”This is the second time such hoardings have appeared. I firmly believe the BJP is behind this. Wherever such posters are found, they should be torn down and burnt,” Bhadauria said.In Mathura, SP district president Virendra Yadav alleged that ‘anti-social elements’ were trying to disturb communal harmony.”The BJP is so rattled that it has no option except to indulge in Hindu-Muslim politics and inflame religious sentiments. Anti-SP posters targeting Mulayam, Akhilesh ignite fresh political storm in UP NEW DELHI: Several posters targeting Samajwadi Party (SP) founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and party chief Akhilesh Yadav were displayed across several parts of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, triggering a political row. The Samajwadi Party accused the BJP and its allies of trying to inflame communal sentiments by labelling them as ‘anti-social elements’, while Uttar Pradesh minister and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar defended the posters, calling them ‘appropriate’. The posters were later removed following the controversy. The posters, displayed in Lucknow, Mathura, Sitapur, Barabanki and other places, carried the slogan “Dil mein Babar, munh mein Ram” (Babar in the heart, Ram on the lips). So is that meme you saved at 2 am, the Spotify playlist you made for someone you don’t talk to anymore, and the Pinterest board of a wedding you haven’t planned. For a generation that has never known a version of itself that wasn’t documented, these aren’t throwaway digital clutter; they’re closer to a diary. Your phone probably knows you better than most of the people in your life.Here’s the strange part: when you die, the law mostly stops caring about you. Your rights end. But your data doesn’t. It stays exactly where it was, on a server in some data centre, encrypted, indexed, backed up, long after you’re not around to log in and check on it.So what actually happens to a digital life once the person living it is gone?It’s a bigger question than it sounds. Your digital footprint isn’t just the obvious stuff, the photos, the DMs, the tweets you’ve forgotten you sent. It’s every email, every voice note, every screenshot of a conversation you meant to delete. It’s the cryptocurrency wallet you set up once and forgot the password to. It’s your search history, your location data, your app usage, the quiet behavioural trail that platforms have been collecting in the background the whole time, whether you noticed or not.Put together, this is less a collection of files than a kind of second self, one built without much thought, and left behind without much of a plan. And increasingly, courts, tech companies, and lawmakers are being forced to answer a question none of them was prepared for: who does that second self belong to, once you’re not around to claim it?When Apple said no, a Gujarat court said yesA father dies without a will. His phone stays locked. And to get back into it, his family has to go to court.That’s what happened in Gandhinagar, where a civil court has ruled that a deceased person’s digital data, photographs, videos, documents, voice notes, form part of their estate and can be accessed by their legal heirs. The order came after Apple told the family it needed a court order before it would grant access to Shaishav Shah’s iPhone and iCloud account.Shah died in April 2025, intestate. His widow and daughter, Sur Shah, wanted into his locked iPhone and iCloud, not for anything financial, but for the photos, videos, voice notes, documents and contacts that were on it. Apple responded that it could reset the password on the iCloud account, but had no way to retrieve data off a physically locked device — and either way, it wanted a court order naming the family as the deceased’s legal representatives before it would act. .So the family, through advocate Jeet Bhatt, petitioned for a letter of administration under the Indian Succession Act. The widow filed a no-objection certificate in favour of her daughter. A public notice went out inviting objections. None came.The court’s reasoning is what makes this order significant. Additional senior civil judge Himanshu Choudhary held that the iCloud data “constitutes a valuable digital asset forming part of the estate of the deceased, capable of administration”, leaning on the broad definitions of “property” and “movable property” under laws like the General Clauses Act, 1897, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and even the Income Tax Act’s recognition of Virtual Digital Assets. On privacy, the court was equally direct: the right to privacy is personal, and it does not survive death.How big tech handles your deathIn the absence of any law telling them what to do, tech companies have quietly become the ones deciding what happens to a person’s digital life after death. There’s no court, no statute, no uniform standard, just each platform’s own internal policy, applied case by case.Here’s how the major ones handle it:Instagram memorialises the account of a person who has died; the profile stays up, but it’s frozen. No one can log into it, edit it, or see private messages. It becomes something closer to a tribute page than an active account.Facebook works similarly, but goes a step further with a “legacy contact”, someone the user names in advance who can manage the memorialised page, respond to friend requests, and pin a tribute post once the person is gone. What they can’t do is get into that person’s DMs. The messages stay locked, permanently.Apple lets users set up a legacy contact too, but only if it’s done ahead of time, while the account holder is still alive. Without that step, families are left going through Apple’s formal request process, and as the Gandhinagar case showed, that can mean a locked device, a locked iCloud account, and a request for a court order before Apple will act at all. .WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption means there’s effectively no back door. Even with a death certificate, next of kin, and every intention of respecting the person’s wishes, family members cannot get into someone’s chats. The encryption that protected the user in life protects the conversation in death too, from everyone, including the people left behind.Google’s Inactive Account Manager is the outlier, the most proactive of the lot. It lets users pre-select trusted contacts and decide, in advance, exactly what those contacts can access: Gmail, photos, drive, once the account has gone dormant for a set period. Set it up, and your family isn’t left guessing. Skip it, and they’re back to filing a discretionary request with no guarantee of a response.X (formerly Twitter) takes a more hands-off approach: inactive accounts are deactivated after six months, and the handle can be released back into circulation. Family members can request deactivation, but they need to prove the death first.Your data doesn’t know if it’s property or a secretNot everything in a digital estate is the same kind of thing, and that’s where this gets complicated. A cryptocurrency wallet or a paid subscription is a digital asset, closer to property, the kind of thing succession law already knows how to handle. A string of private messages, or a search history, is something else entirely. It’s personal. And the law hasn’t caught up to the difference.Legal experts have flagged this exact gap, that “digital assets” and “personal information” aren’t necessarily the same thing, and while some digital property fits cleanly within existing succession law, deeply personal data raises separate questions of privacy and consent that don’t just go away because someone has died. Handing a daughter access to her father’s photos is one thing. Handing her access to every message he ever sent, to anyone, is another, and rulings like Gandhinagar’s don’t really draw that line yet. .There’s also a quieter, opposite problem building in the background: what if there’s nothing left to inherit at all? India’s draft Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 include a provision requiring platforms to delete a person’s data if their account sits inactive for a set period, unless they’re legally required to retain it. Like Apple’s Legacy Contact and Google’s Inactive Account Manager, DPDP Act, 2023 allows users to nominate someone in advance to exercise their rights over their personal data after death or incapacity.So India is edging toward two different futures at once. One, where a family can go to court and claim a full digital estate. The other, where an unclaimed account simply expires, and the data disappears with it, nominee or not. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday said the existing arrangement at the disputed Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Mosque complex in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar would remain ad hoc and subject to the final outcome of the pending petitions. The court also assured both the Hindu and Muslim sides that it was prepared to hear the matter on a day-to-day basis to resolve the dispute.According to news agency PTI, the bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohan was hearing a batch of appeals challenging the Madhya Pradesh high court’s May 15 judgment declaring the disputed Bhojshala complex in Dhar district a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati.The court also directed that if the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) carries out any structural alterations at the site, “they shall not be given effect to without its permission.” It clarified that the present arrangement for the Muslim side would remain temporary pending the final adjudication of the case. The top court has also directed separate open space to be provided to Muslims adjacent to disputed site for offering namaz on Friday between 1 and 3 pm.Calling the dispute highly sensitive, the bench reportedly urged restraint from all sides, “These are very sensitive matters. What is being said in court can unnecessarily create controversies or send wrong impression. We have to be very careful about every expression used.”According to PTI, The bench further observed, “This is the first time that the issue relating to the interim arrangement is coming before us. The high court’s order and the helplessness of the State in maintaining law and order are also being taken note of. Our view is that whatever arrangement is presently in place, the matter can be listed before an appropriate bench within 10 to 15 days.”The matter had been mentioned before the court on Monday by senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi and advocate Nizam Pasha, appearing for the Muslim appellants, who sought an urgent hearing. The Chief Justice had then asked them to remove defects in the petitions and assured an early listing.On May 15, the Madhya Pradesh high court held that the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Mosque complex is a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati and quashed a decades-old ASI order that had permitted the Muslim community to offer Friday prayers at the site.Get the latest India news and live updates. NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs on Tuesday registered a strong protest against the continued attacks on vessels carrying Indian seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz by Iran.According to a statement, the ministry said that India is deeply concerned by the attacks on two vessels, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, during their transit through the Strait of Hormuz.”India is deeply concerned by the attacks on two vessels, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, during their transit through the Strait of Hormuz today. Both the vessels were carrying 30 Indian seafarers, among their combined crew of 46. Of the 12 Indian nationals onboard MT Al Bahiyah, one has tragically lost his life and another has been injured,” the ministry said.”Of the 18 Indian nationals onboard MT Mombasa, 9 have sustained injuries, including 2 who are reported to be seriously injured. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased Indian national and wish speedy recovery to those injured. NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs on Tuesday registered a strong protest against the continued attacks on vessels carrying Indian seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz by Iran.According to a statement, the ministry said that India is deeply concerned by the attacks on two vessels, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, during their transit through the Strait of Hormuz.”India is deeply concerned by the attacks on two vessels, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, during their transit through the Strait of Hormuz today. Both the vessels were carrying 30 Indian seafarers, among their combined crew of 46. Of the 12 Indian nationals onboard MT Al Bahiyah, one has tragically lost his life and another has been injured,” the ministry said.”Of the 18 Indian nationals onboard MT Mombasa, 9 have sustained injuries, including 2 who are reported to be seriously injured. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased Indian national and wish speedy recovery to those injured.
