Reliance’s Jio platforms seeks Sebi nod for billion IPO MUMBAI: Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, has filed draft listing papers with the Sebi for an initial public offering (IPO) that could raise up to billion, or roughly Rs 37,700 crore — making it the largest stock market listing in India’s history.The firm is structuring the offering as a primary share sale, allowing it to retain all proceeds — a method that contrasts with NSE’s planned IPO, which will be conducted through an offer-for-sale in which existing shareholders will pocket the gains.Jio public offer proceeds will be used to pare debtThe decision marks a departure from earlier expectations that foreign backers would use the float to cash out part of their stakes in Jio. FIP casts doubt on interim Air India crash report MUMBAI: The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has alleged that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau’s (AAIB) preliminary report on Air India flight 171 crash appears to have deliberately omitted cockpit warning data that would have pointed to an electrical failure preceding the loss of both engines.The pilots’ association said that simulator tests commissioned independently by them have exposed timing errors that further undermine the report’s findings. FIP said it had written to the govt with a request that AAIB should run simulator tests before releasing the final report on the June 12, 2025, accident.At a presser Friday, FIP president Capt C Randhawa said an electrical failure of the kind the federation has long alleged would have triggered a cascade of caution messages, accompanied by audio alerts, all of which would have been recorded on the cockpit voice recorder. He alleged the preliminary report chose not to reproduce that warning sequence.He questioned why flight data recorder installed in the tail of the aircraft was damaged extensively when the tail was largely found intact. He referred to the fact that this particular recorder is solely powered by electricity and implied that the damage indicated a problem with the aircraft’s electric power supply.Randhawa said FIP commissioned 10 tests on a Boeing 787 simulator after AAIB declined repeated requests to conduct its own replication. The tests found the Ram Air Turbine, the emergency power supply in the aircraft takes 18 seconds to deploy and restore hydraulic pressure after engine shutdown, directly contradicting the preliminary report’s timeline that RAT deployed four seconds after fuel control switches moved to cut off fuel supply to the engines.Capt Randhawa invoked the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ event of 2009, when a US Airways flight landed on the Hudson River shortly after take-off. The US investigating agency had initially blamed Capt Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger for choosing to ditch in the river. But after they ran 30-35 simulator tests, they learned that the aircraft could not have made it back to the runway on time and landed safely. It was only then that Capt Sullenberger, who was alive to defend himself, was cleared. “Here we have captains who have died. No one is there to protect them,” said Capt Randhawa. India’s 40% rainfall shortfall hits reservoir water levels New Delhi: India’s 40% deficit in cumulative monsoon rainfall has taken a toll on live water storage in the country’s 166 major reservoirs, which has dipped to nearly 27.5% of their total storage capacity.Though overall storage of the 166 reservoirs at the current level is still better than normal (the average storage of the last 10 years) during the corresponding period, the fall linked to depressed rainfall due to El Nino may be a reason for worry as functional efficiency of these reservoirs is important for irrigation, domestic use and industrial requirement, including hydro-electric power generation. The tardy progress of monsoon may lead to further decline, posing a risk to farming operations and other usage. Twenty out of these 166 major reservoirs are of hydro-electric projects such as Gobind Sagar in Himachal Pradesh, Thein Dam in Punjab, Rana Pratap Sagar in Rajasthan, and Hirakud in Odisha, Panchet Hill in Jharkhand, Ukai and Sardar Sarovar in Gujarat, and Pench in Maharashtra, among others.Central Water Commission data on live storage of the 166 reservoirs shows that water storage in 11 reservoirs of the northern region and 28 reservoirs of the central region is better than the corresponding period last year, but the status of reservoirs in the eastern (27), southern (47) and western (53) regions is quite worrisome.The total live storage capacity of 166 reservoirs is around 183.6 billion cubic metres (BCM) which is more than 71% of the live storage capacity of 257.8 BCM which is estimated to have been created in the country.State-wise data shows that reservoirs in Assam, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have better storage (in %) than last year for the corresponding period. On the other hand, reservoirs in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura and West Bengal have less storage (in %) than last year.In 2025, the monsoon arrived over Kerala eight days in advance and progressed well thereafter, making water available to reservoirs in June, unlike this year when the monsoon onset happened three days late and its progress continues to be weak.Get the latest India news and live updates. India’s 40% rainfall shortfall hits reservoir water levels New Delhi: India’s 40% deficit in cumulative monsoon rainfall has taken a toll on live water storage in the country’s 166 major reservoirs, which has dipped to nearly 27.5% of their total storage capacity.Though overall storage of the 166 reservoirs at the current level is still better than normal (the average storage of the last 10 years) during the corresponding period, the fall linked to depressed rainfall due to El Nino may be a reason for worry as functional efficiency of these reservoirs is important for irrigation, domestic use and industrial requirement, including hydro-electric power generation. The tardy progress of monsoon may lead to further decline, posing a risk to farming operations and other usage. Twenty out of these 166 major reservoirs are of hydro-electric projects such as Gobind Sagar in Himachal Pradesh, Thein Dam in Punjab, Rana Pratap Sagar in Rajasthan, and Hirakud in Odisha, Panchet Hill in Jharkhand, Ukai and Sardar Sarovar in Gujarat, and Pench in Maharashtra, among others.Central Water Commission data on live storage of the 166 reservoirs shows that water storage in 11 reservoirs of the northern region and 28 reservoirs of the central region is better than the corresponding period last year, but the status of reservoirs in the eastern (27), southern (47) and western (53) regions is quite worrisome.The total live storage capacity of 166 reservoirs is around 183.6 billion cubic metres (BCM) which is more than 71% of the live storage capacity of 257.8 BCM which is estimated to have been created in the country.State-wise data shows that reservoirs in Assam, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have better storage (in %) than last year for the corresponding period. On the other hand, reservoirs in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura and West Bengal have less storage (in %) than last year.In 2025, the monsoon arrived over Kerala eight days in advance and progressed well thereafter, making water available to reservoirs in June, unlike this year when the monsoon onset happened three days late and its progress continues to be weak.Get the latest India news and live updates. Bengal cops start probe into TMC’s bank accounts KOLKATA: A dissident MLA’s complaint alleging substantial unaccounted deposits in Trinamool Congress’s name led Bengal Police to open a probe Friday into the party’s bank accounts under penal sections pertaining to organised crime, cheating and criminal conspiracy. Bidhannagar police commissionerate’s cybercrime wing registered the case under BNS and Information Technology Act after legislator Biswanath Das sought an investigation into the source and movement of funds through three accounts in TMC’s name with HDFC Bank’s Central Plaza branch in Kolkata. The probe was ordered a day after the news broke that former minister Aroop Biswas had written to HDFC Bank a week ago asking for the party’s accounts to be frozen. Biswas, who signed TMC’s audit report to Election Commission in his role as treasurer, was removed from the post June 5. According to the report, the three accounts hold Rs 535 crore, which constitutes over half of the party’s total declared funds of Rs 1,018.8 crore, as on March 31, 2025. Das alleged funds generated through illegal activities, had been channelled through electronic banking platforms before being deposited. “The MLA has asked police to investigate whether digital communication systems and online banking mechanisms had been used to conceal the movement of funds. He also urged us to preserve banking records, KYC documents and electronic transaction data,” a senior police officer said.Get the latest India news and live updates. Delhi woman mistaken for child-lifter, stripped KORAPUT: Odisha Police Thursday arrested 16 people who were part of a mob that chased and assaulted a woman from Delhi and her male colleague from Gujarat, mistaking them for child kidnappers, in a remote village in Rayagada district on June 16. The accused also half-stripped the woman.The two work with voluntary organisations under fellowship programmes. While the woman is engaged in solid waste management initiatives in Kalahandi district, the man from Surat is associated with a turmeric packaging project in Kandhamal district.According to police, they were travelling from Daringbadi in Kandhamal to Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi district on a scooter. They stopped near Kandulguda village to seek directions.As the two interacted with a group of children and gave them chocolates, it aroused the suspicion of some villagers, who quickly spread a rumour that the outsiders were child-lifters. The two development workers alleged they were attacked despite repeatedly showing their identity cards and explaining the purpose of their visit.Police have registered four cases, with preliminary investigations suggesting 40 to 50 could be involved in the attack. Rayagada SP Raj Prasad said, “Kalyansinghpur police rescued the two victims and arrested 16 persons based on CCTV footage.
