The Supreme Court has cleared the way for the immediate declaration of Maharashtra civic election results, dismissing any further delays due to pending High Court cases. The apex court ruled that results for all municipal bodies will be announced after the final round of voting on December 20, irrespective of ongoing legal challenges. Representative image NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Friday approved the decision of the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court directing Maharashtra State Election Commission to declare results of all civic body elections on completion of next round of voting on Dec 20, and clarified that announcement of the results would not be postponed further due to pendency of pleas in HC.All municipal councils and nagar panchayats in the state were scheduled to go to polls on Dec 2. However, voting took place in 264 of them on Dec 2, with the state EC postponing elections in 24 seats where appeals are pending over acceptance and rejection of nomination papers.Appearing for petitioners, senior advocate A M Singhvi said that with the appeals pending, there is an apprehension that declaration of results may get pushed further as the adjudication of the pleas would be a time-consuming affair requiring a response from respondents and hearing by HC.A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said there is nothing new in election results being declared after the last phase of polling to prevent voters in constituencies which go to polls later from getting influenced by the mood of voters in constituencies where elections were held earlier. The bench directed the state EC to declare the results of all civic bodies after completion of elections in the second phase, and clarified that “pendency of the petitions in HC would not be an impediment for declaration of the results.”End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos”Next Year in Russia…” Deputy PM Manturov Urges Indian Companies to Expand Bilateral Trade”Ordinary Indians Pay Price” Rahul Gandhi Calls Indigo Chaos The ‘Cost Of Monopoly Model’India, Russia Renew Call for Inclusive UN Security Council Structure: MEAPutin Says Russia Didn’t Come Only for Energy, Seeks Bold Multifaceted Partnership with IndiaCentre Orders High-Level Probe As IndiGo Flight Operations Set To Normalise In 3 DaysImran Khan Tagged ‘Security Threat’ As Pakistan Army Launches Fiercest Public Attack In Years‘Not Here Only For Energy’: Putin Seeks Broader India-Russia PartnershipPM Modi Urges Putin To Build New Economic Axis As India Becomes Emerging Skilled Capital Of WorldSpiceJet Chairman Ajay Singh Calls IndiGo Crisis ‘Unfortunate’, Offers 100 Extra FlightsPakistan Supports China’s Arunachal Lie As Putin Meets Modi Amid Major India Russia Cooperation123PhotostoriesRajesh Khanna-Dimple Kapadia, Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor Khan; Bollywood marriages spanning age gapsLifestyle expert shares five ‘safe’ ways to drink alcohol if at all one should8 common mistakes people make while making rotis and easy fixes9 fiber-rich dishes made with flattened rice (poha) for breakfastBigg Boss 19: Shehbaz Badesha calls Tanya Mittal fake and irritating; breaks silence on father being trolled for ‘overly friendly’ behaviour with female contestantsAdrian Chiles’ skin cancer diagnosis: How he spotted the symptoms that made all the differenceHow Bhagavad Gita can heal unknown childhood trauma and unlock blockages for success in lifeNutrition fact of the day: Greek yogurt has twice the protein of regular yogurt5 clever animals that deceive predators by playing dead10 protein- and fiber-rich broccoli and egg dishes under 20 minutes for bachelors123Hot PicksIndigo Flight DelayPutin India VisitWorld NewsGold rate todaySilver rate todayPublic Holidays NovemberBank Holidays NovemberTop TrendingLos Angeles Lakers vs Boston CelticsNBA trade RumorsOmarion HamptonCandace OwensAryna SabalenkaTrey BensonTravis KelceGeorge PickensStefon DiggsTaylor Swift

India and Russia are set to significantly boost nuclear energy collaboration following President Putin’s visit. Discussions focused on constructing a second Russian-designed nuclear power plant, with India committed to finalizing site allocation. The agreement also encompasses expanding cooperation in fuel cycle, lifecycle support for Kudankulam, and peaceful atomic energy applications. File photo NEW DELHI: In an important takeaway from Russian President Vladimir Putin’s first official visit to India since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022, India and Russia on Friday decided to expand cooperation in nuclear energy, with the two sides discussing the possibility of building a second nuclear power plant with Russian-designed reactors.“The Indian side will strive to finalise formal allotment of the second site in accordance with earlier agreements,” said a joint statement issued on Friday.Modi and Putin confirmed their intention to broaden cooperation in nuclear energy, including fuel cycle, lifecycle support for the operating Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) and non-power applications, as well as a new agenda for engagement in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy and related high technologies.India currently operates two Russian VVER (Voda Voda Energo Reactor, i.e. water-cooled, water-moderated energy reactor) of 1 GW each at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu and plans to add four more such units there.India and Russia have been discussing a second site to set up six 1.2 GW reactors since 2016, but talks haven’t progressed due to legal constraints. The Kudankulam plant is currently the only one hosting foreign reactors as it predates the rollout of the liability law.The two sides also agreed to accelerate technical and commercial discussions on the VVER of the Russian design, research and joint development of NPPs, localisation and joint manufacturing of nuclear equipment and fuel assemblies for Russian-designed large capacity Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), subject to terms and conditions as mutually agreeable. The talks on the second nuclear site have happened amid Modi govt’s plan to bring legislative changes in the atomic energy law in the current Parliament session to open up the sector to private nuclear operators. Till now, state-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd remains the primary body responsible for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of a majority of India’s nuclear power plants. The proposed changes aim to ease the sector’s current liability regime, which exposes suppliers to damage claims and legal suits — along with the operator. On the Kudankulam project, the two leaders “welcomed the progress achieved in implementation of KKNPP, including the construction of the remaining NPP units and agreed on adhering to the timeline for supplies of equipment and fuel”.The leaders noted that cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy is a significant component of the strategic partnership, given the plans of the Govt of India to increase India’s nuclear energy capacity to 100GW by 2047.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos”Next Year in Russia…” Deputy PM Manturov Urges Indian Companies to Expand Bilateral Trade”Ordinary Indians Pay Price” Rahul Gandhi Calls Indigo Chaos The ‘Cost Of Monopoly Model’India, Russia Renew Call for Inclusive UN Security Council Structure: MEAPutin Says Russia Didn’t Come Only for Energy, Seeks Bold Multifaceted Partnership with IndiaCentre Orders High-Level Probe As IndiGo Flight Operations Set To Normalise In 3 DaysImran Khan Tagged ‘Security Threat’ As Pakistan Army Launches Fiercest Public Attack In Years‘Not Here Only For Energy’: Putin Seeks Broader India-Russia PartnershipPM Modi Urges Putin To Build New Economic Axis As India Becomes Emerging Skilled Capital Of WorldSpiceJet Chairman Ajay Singh Calls IndiGo Crisis ‘Unfortunate’, Offers 100 Extra FlightsPakistan Supports China’s Arunachal Lie As Putin Meets Modi Amid Major India Russia Cooperation123PhotostoriesLifestyle expert shares five ‘safe’ ways to drink alcohol if at all one should8 common mistakes people make while making rotis and easy fixes9 fiber-rich dishes made with flattened rice (poha) for breakfastBigg Boss 19: Shehbaz Badesha calls Tanya Mittal fake and irritating; breaks silence on father being trolled for ‘overly friendly’ behaviour with female contestantsAdrian Chiles’ skin cancer diagnosis: How he spotted the symptoms that made all the differenceHow Bhagavad Gita can heal unknown childhood trauma and unlock blockages for success in lifeNutrition fact of the day: Greek yogurt has twice the protein of regular yogurt5 clever animals that deceive predators by playing dead10 protein- and fiber-rich broccoli and egg dishes under 20 minutes for bachelors5 Oscar Wilde love quotes that compelus to rethink the definition of romance123Hot PicksIndigo Flight DelayPutin India VisitWorld NewsGold rate todaySilver rate todayPublic Holidays NovemberBank Holidays NovemberTop TrendingAUS vs ENG LiveLos Angeles LakersMatthew Stafford WifeCandace OwensAryna SabalenkaDak PrescottTravis KelceKobe BryantJohan OviedoJohan Oviendo

. TOI Correspondent from Washington: At a time the Trump administration is attriting India’s security and economy with punitive tariffs and indulgence towards hostile neighbors, the new US 2025 National Security Strategy wants to enlist New Delhi to prevent domination by “any single competitor nation” while advancing its own primacy. The 29-page report released on Friday marks a significant reorientation of US foreign policy in generations, rejecting the bipartisan internationalist framework that has guided Washington since the end of the Cold War. In doing so, it fundamentally redefines America’s posture toward Asia, India, and the Indo-Pacific, recasting it to advance US interests, seemingly at the expense of allies and partners it ostensibly views as vassal states. Where previous iterations of the NSS emphasised alliances, trade liberalisation, multilateralism, and the maintenance of a rules-based international order, the 2025 document characterises such commitments as the misguided work of “our elites,” who allegedly saddled Americans with an unsustainable burden. It argues that successive administrations built “a vast military, regulatory and foreign-aid apparatus” while enabling allies to “offload the cost of their defence onto the American people.”In stark contrast, the new NSS is blunt in announcing what it calls a “Necessary, welcome correction”: a hard pivot toward unilateral action, economic nationalism, and the uncompromising pursuit of “core national interests” — sovereignty, homeland defence, self-reliance, and domestic industrial strength. Gone is the aspirational language of values promotion, democracy assistance, or stewardship of the global commons. In its place is an isolationist, highly transactional framework that explicitly rejects the foreign-policy consensus of the Obama, Bush, and Biden eras. Essentially, it offers a foreign policy of withdrawal wrapped in the language of national resurrection, with a focus on domestic economic renewal and sovereignty. The change is particularly stark for India, which finds four mentions in the report, including the discredited claim of Trump having brought about a truce in war with Pakistan. “We must continue to improve commercial (and other) relations with India to encourage New Delhi to contribute to Indo-Pacific security, including through continued quadrilateral cooperation with Australia, Japan, and the United States (“the Quad”),” the report says, mirthlessly prefacing its outlook with that assertion that the US “must work with our treaty allies and partners to counteract predatory economic practices and use our combined economic power to help safeguard our prime position in the world economy” – this at a time Washington has kneecapped India’s economy with punitive tariffs and sanctions while kissing up to China. Elsewhere, the report says America should “enlist our European and Asian allies and partners, including India, to cement and improve our joint positions in the Western Hemisphere and, with regard to critical minerals, in Africa,” forming “coalitions that use our comparative advantages in finance and technology to build export markets with cooperating countries.” By most accounts, the US is attriting any advantage India has in finance and technology.Broadly, the NSS reframes India as a diplomatic challenge to be managed rather than as a strategic partner, as viewed by previous administrations, including during Trump 1. Instead of treating New Delhi as a counterweight in balancing China, the NSS positions India as a participant whose contributions to regional security must be coaxed rather than cultivated through shared values or long-term alignment.Remarkably for a country that was largely built by European settlers with land stolen from Native Americans, the report also takes on the burden of protecting western civilisation, asserting the US wants to “support our allies in preserving the freedom and security of Europe, while restoring Europe’s civilisational self-confidence and Western identity,” warning of a continent where “certain Nato members will become majority non-European.”The NSS was widely panned both by Trump critics, as expected, but also from MAGA nativists. While Europeanists lamented that the report made no mention of the draconian authoritarianism of China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, or any other country and the only region that the NSS accuses of “anti-democratic” policies is Europe, MAGA hardliners pointed out that there was “zero mention of the threat Islamic terrorism poses to our national security.”But the one thing everyone agreed on: the 2025 NSS makes it clear that the era of the US “shouldering the world’s burdens” is over. It will now march to its own tune — even if it is out of tune.About the AuthorChidanand RajghattaRajghatta is author of Kamala Harris: Phenomenal WomanEnd of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosHamas Celebrates As Israel-Backed Militia Leader Yasser Abu Shabab Is Killed In Gaza ClashMinneapolis Crackdown: Somalis Arrested On Trump Orders; Ilhan Omar Deportation To Follow? | US News’Read History, Putin Is Unbeatable’: French Leader Humiliates Macron For Anti-Russia CampaignDC Bomber Unmasked: Shock Details About Virginia Man Brian Cole Nabbed Pipe Bomb Plot | WATCHPutin Vows To Expand Defence Ties With India As New Delhi Eyes S-500 Shield Amid U.S. TensionsPutin, Modi Supercharge India’s Atomic Future With Big Reactor Push And Next-Gen Mini Reactors’U.S. Has A Cultural Problem, Lacks Respect’: Republican Josh Breechen EXPLODES Over Police AttacksPutin SHOCKS Trump With UNEXPECTED Oil Announcement From India Soil, Modi Watches In Joy | WATCH’Like Pole Star’: PM Modi Lauds Strong Ties With Russia; Hails Moscow’s Support In War On TerrorUkraine Pounds Russia With Massive 41-Drone Onslaught As Putin Holds Meetings In India123PhotostoriesAdrian Chiles’ skin cancer diagnosis: How he spotted the symptoms that made all the differenceHow Bhagavad Gita can heal unknown childhood trauma and unlock blockages for success in lifeNutrition fact of the day: Greek yogurt has twice the protein of regular yogurt5 clever animals that deceive predators by playing dead10 protein- and fiber-rich broccoli and egg dishes under 20 minutes for bachelors5 Oscar Wilde love quotes that compelus to rethink the definition of romance’Dhurandhar’, ‘Padmaavat’, ‘Jolly LL.B 2’: Bollywood movies that faced legal trouble before releaseBigg Boss 19: From getting evicted in the first week, ugly fight with Amaal Mallik to emotional breakdown while talking about her father; Farrhana Bhatt’s journeyRakul Preet Singh to Sanya Malhotra: Today’s 5 most fashionable outfits you’ll want to screenshotRemove dandruff naturally: 4 home remedies that actually work123Hot PicksIndigo Flight DelayPutin India VisitWorld NewsGold rate todaySilver rate todayPublic Holidays NovemberBank Holidays NovemberTop TrendingAUS vs ENG LiveLos Angeles LakersMatthew Stafford WifeCandace OwensAryna SabalenkaDak PrescottTravis KelceKobe BryantJohan OviedoJohan Oviendo

India and Russia have pledged to boost their joint efforts in implementing climate actions under UN frameworks, including the Paris Agreement. Both nations will collaborate on increasing access to climate finance and technologies for developing countries and economies in transition. They also agreed to intensify bilateral dialogue on carbon trade mechanisms and low-carbon technologies. NEW DELHI: India and Russia on Friday agreed to intensify their bilateral efforts for implementing different climate actions under the global goals approved on multilateral forums such as the UN Convention on climate change and its Paris Agreement. The statement, issued after the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin, noted the agreement of both the countries to continue the development of joint approaches to mobilise “increased access to climate finance and technologies” for developing countries and economies in transition.Russia comes under the ‘economies in transition’ (EIT) category and therefore does not fall under the group of developed countries who are obligated to provide climate finance to assist developing countries to undertake emissions reduction activities under the UN Convention and help them adapt to adverse effects of climate change.Under the Convention, the developed countries have to take all practicable steps to promote the development and transfer of environmentally friendly technologies to EIT and developing countries. India and Russia joint approach may help in mobilising climate finance by leveraging their combined efforts at multilateral forums.Noting the importance of expanding efforts to combat climate change and achieving the goals of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, both India and Russia agreed to “intensify the bilateral dialogue on implementing mechanisms of the Article 6 (carbon trade) of the Paris Agreement, developing low-carbon technologies and using sustainable finance instruments”.The joint statement said that both the countries also agreed to continue interaction within G20, BRICS, SCO on the key issues of climate change. “Both sides encouraged fruitful cooperation in the area of addressing climate change in BRICS during the India Chairship in grouping in 2026,” it said. The statement also welcomed the first meeting of the Joint Russia-India Working Group on the issues of climate change and low-carbon development held on Sept 10 in New Delhi within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding on the issues of climate change and low-carbon development.About the AuthorVishwa MohanVishwa Mohan is Senior Editor at The Times of India. NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has confirmed that he has been invited to the President’s dinner scheduled for Friday in honour of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking to the media outside the Parliament complex, Tharoor said he will “definitely go” to the dinner.Putin Visit Sparks Storm As Tharoor, Not Rahul, Invited To President’s High-Profile State BanquetThis comes as Congress has claimed that invitations were not extended to leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.Congress leader Pawan Khera accused the government of “breaching all protocols”, claiming that the “decision came as a surprise.””There is no invite for the other LoPs, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. This comes as a surprise, but we should not be surprised because this government is used to breaching all protocols,” Khera said.Khera also slammed Tharoor for accepting the invitation and said that he “should understand why the game is being played.””It’s quite surprising that an invitation was sent and the invitation was accepted also. Everyone’s conscience has a voice. When my leaders aren’t invited, but I am, we should understand why the game is being played, who is playing the game, and why we shouldn’t be part of it,” he added.Earlier, Rahul accused the Centre of not following the “tradition” of allowing foreign dignitaries to meet the leader of opposition.Speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex, Rahul expressed displeasure and alleged that the government tells visiting foreign dignitaries not to meet the Leader of the Opposition due to its “insecurity”.”Generally, the tradition has been that whoever visits India, the LoP used to have a meeting. It used to happen in the Vajpayee government, the Manmohan Singh government. But this is not the case now. Whenever I visit abroad, they suggest that those people shouldn’t meet the LoP. People told us we have been informed not to meet the LoP. LoP provides a second perspective; we also represent India, but the government doesn’t want us to meet foreign dignitaries. PM Modi and the foreign ministry do not follow this now because of insecurity,” Rahul said.(This is a developing story)About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
