A political spat erupted over the Karthigai Deepam lighting in Tirupparankundram, with DMK accusing BJP of inciting communal unrest. BJP state chief Nainar Nagenthran defended the move, stating there was no harm in the area resembling Ayodhya and dismissing fears of riots. Nainar Nagendran (File photo) CHENNAI: With the ‘deepam’ row heating up, DMK netas accused BJP of attempting to stir communal unrest in TN, prompting BJP state chief Nainar Nagenthran to retort that there was nothing wrong in Tirupparankundram (Madurai) becoming like Ayodhya. After paying respects to BR Ambedkar on his death anniversary in Chennai Saturday, Nainar told reporters, “Ayodhya is in India, not in England or Europe. There is nothing wrong in Tirupparankundram becoming Ayodhya. We have heard the greatness of Ram Rajya and want to implement it here.” He was responding to DMK’s allegations that BJP was trying to use the deepam issue to create an Ayodhya-like situation in Tirupparankundram.Asked about the communal tension rising in Tirupparankundram due to BJP and some Hindu groups trying to light the Karthigai Deepam at a stone pillar near a dargah atop the hill, Nainar said “there is no chance of communal riots, because none of the Muslims have said a word against it.”DMK MP Kanimozhi responded to Nainar, saying, “Should TN change like Ayodhya? Like Ayodhya in Faizabad constituency, where the people made BJP suffer a crushing defeat in the last election?” Countering her, former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said there was communal harmony in BJP-governed states, and hence people continued to vote for the party. Quad nations have strongly condemned terrorism, including cross-border acts, and offered condolences for the Red Fort incident. Despite Quad summit delays, the group remains active, recently holding counterterrorism workshops and a tabletop exercise. Quad slams Red Fort blast, says bring culprits to justice NEW DELHI: Even as uncertainty looms over the Quad summit, the grouping held a meeting of its counterterrorism working group and unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism. In a joint statement, the members also expressed their condolences for the “heinous terror incident” near Red Fort in Delhi last month, called for the perpetrators, organisers and financiers of this reprehensible act to be brought to justice, and urged all UN member states to cooperate in doing so.With India and the US yet to finalise a bilateral trade agreement that is crucial for their relationship, the Quad summit could not take place this year, and there’s no formal word on when India might be able to host it in 2026. However, Quad has remained engaged at the level of officials on issues of interest in the Indo-Pacific. In Sept, Indiahosted counterterrorismworkshops that included a technical exchange on misuse of Unmanned Aerial Systems/drones by terrorists and a seminar on preventing terrorist exploitation of new and emerging technologies, including for terror-financing.During the meeting last week, the Quad member countries exchanged assessments on the terrorism threat landscape, including developments in the Indo-Pacific region.“They discussed the full spectrum of counterterrorism cooperation and measures that could be used to address existing and emerging challenges. They underscored the importance of ensuring the Indo-Pacific remains open and free from the threats of terrorism,” said the joint statement.A Tabletop Exercise (TTx) on “Counter Terrorism Operations in the Urban Environment” was also conducted. The Railways announced 89 special trains across all zones to be operated in the next three days starting Saturday to help people facing travel disruptions due to the mass flight cancellations by IndiGo. In a coordinated move by the Railway Ministry, the trains, which are to make over 100 trips, were arranged in the shortest possible time after analysis of train traffic situations in major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Patna, and Howrah, among others. “The number of special trains and their trips might increase further depending on the traffic scenario. All zones have been asked to make use of all available resources, including rolling stock as well as manpower, to safely operate these trains for the convenience of lakhs of passengers stranded at different parts of the country due to flight cancellations,” said Dilip Kumar, Executive Director, Information & Publicity, Railway Board. Officials said efforts are being made to make people aware about the trains, and some divisions have even disseminated information at nearby airports to help passengers. South Eastern Railway has issued a press release and informed the Airport Authority to display information regarding the newly introduced special train services. “Western Railway will run seven special trains on a special fare between Mumbai Central-New Delhi, Mumbai Central-Bhiwani, Mumbai Central-Shakur Basti, Bandra Terminus-Durgapura, Valsad-Bilaspur, Sabarmati-Delhi and Sabarmati-Delhi Sarai Rohilla stations,” a press note said. Similarly, South Central Railway on Saturday announced that it would run four special trains to manage the surge in passengers resulting from the large-scale cancellation of IndiGo flights. Central Railway and Northern Railway have planned 14 and 10 special trains respectively, and officials said these numbers are being further reviewed to meet any rising requirements. Other zones have also issued notifications regarding special trains along with their schedules. For at least five days in a row, IndiGo flight operations have significantly disrupted, with a large number of cancellations and delays causing hardships to thousands of passengers. In many cases, baggages have been misplaced.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’Maligning Hindu Way Of Life’: PM Modi Calls Out Colonial Mindset Over ‘Hindu Rate Of Growth’ LabelUP CM Yogi Slams Parties ‘Insulting Babasaheb’s Legacy’, Announces Security For Ambedkar Statues’Engaging Atmosphere Reigned’: Shashi Tharoor After State Dinner With Russian President Putin’Sab Jagah Pohchenge’: Yogi Adityanath On What’s Next After Ram Temple, ‘Kashi-Mathura’ Slogan’Black Day’: Owaisi Targets Modi Govt, Questions Acquittals In Babri Masjid Demolition CasePutin Dinner Snub Triggers War of Word: Priyanka Chaturvedi Slams ‘Petty’ Politics, BJP Blasts RahulHow Russia May Open Central Asia For India As West Pushes Harder: Kugelman Explains The Power ShiftAviation Meltdown Escalates As IndiGo Cancels 400 Flights And Government Enforces Fare ControlsUS Singer Calls PM Modi World’s Top Leader, Warns Washington To Recalibrate Its India Strategy FastEx-Pentagon Official Says Asim Munir Must Be Arrested As He Slams US Policy, Calls For India Apology123PhotostoriesSara Khan marries Krish Pathak in both Hindu and Muslim rituals, drops new photos; says ‘Qubool Hai se Saat Phere tak’Stressed and stiff? 4 yoga moves for instant relief10 reminders every working mom who feels guilty needs to hear todayBigg Boss 19: From making shocking revelations about a luxurious lifestyle to Ekta Kapoor offering her a project; finalist Tanya Mittal’s journey10 tips to keep your baby warm and cozy this winter9 one-pot South Indian vegetarian rice dishes to try’3BHK’ to ‘Aan Paavam Pollathathu’:5 Tamil films of 2025 that won hearts with natural acting and nuanced storiesThe 5 stages of awakening: Find out where you stand todayShah Rukh Khan-Kajol to Varun Dhawan-Alia Bhatt: Bollywood’s most loved onscreen couples who never dated in real lifeFrom Weight loss to Cholesterol: Benefits of Edamame Beans and 6 ways to cook them123Hot PicksIndigo Flight DelayPutin India VisitWorld NewsGold rate todaySilver rate todayPublic Holidays NovemberBank Holidays NovemberTop TrendingCaeleb Dressel Net WorthDelhi Airport AdvisoryIndigo Flight CancellationCandace OwensAryna Sabalenka Net WorthHow to get danny Phantom in FortniteTravis KelceJohn Cena FinalJEE Advanced Exam DateDDA RecruitmentExam Schedule

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has received a show cause notice from aviation watchdog DGCA for mass flight disruptions since December 2. The notice cites alleged operational lapses and inadequate passenger support, demanding a response within 24 hours. A four-member committee has been formed to investigate the issue and recommend preventive measures. New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Saturday issued show cause notices to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers & the airline’s accountable manager. They have to reply within 24 hours to the same. The airline is staring at some serious regulatory action. The regulator’s notice is least to have pointed out that the main reason for for the flight disruptions was not preparing to implement the new flight duty time limitation (FDTL) that had come into force on Nov 1, 2025. The notice is learnt to say there were lapses in planning, oversight and resource management for the same which is violative of the rules.Apart from these lapses, the notice also points out that IndiGo neither gave required information on flight cancellations to passenger, nor did it provide facilities that have to be mandatorily given in cases of cancellations and delays.“Such large-scale operational failures indicate significant lapses in planning, oversight, and resource management, and is prima facie non-compliance on the part of the airline… as the CEO (and accountable manager) you are responsible for ensuring effective management of the airline but you have failed in your duty to ensure timely arrangements for conduct of reliable operations and the availability of requisite facilities to the passengers,” the notice says.Highly placed govt sources say accountability will be fixed and action taken against all those found responsible for the unprecedented mess IndiGo passengers have faced in past few days. “This kind of thing is simply not acceptable. Heads will have to roll,” said a senior official.IndiGo is staring at significant financial penalties from govt. “We have so far not asked for anyone to be removed as that will further hamper the recovery of the airline that has stalled. Once the schedule integrity is restored, that issue will be looked at,” said sources.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’Maligning Hindu Way Of Life’: PM Modi Calls Out Colonial Mindset Over ‘Hindu Rate Of Growth’ LabelUP CM Yogi Slams Parties ‘Insulting Babasaheb’s Legacy’, Announces Security For Ambedkar Statues’Engaging Atmosphere Reigned’: Shashi Tharoor After State Dinner With Russian President Putin’Sab Jagah Pohchenge’: Yogi Adityanath On What’s Next After Ram Temple, ‘Kashi-Mathura’ Slogan’Black Day’: Owaisi Targets Modi Govt, Questions Acquittals In Babri Masjid Demolition CasePutin Dinner Snub Triggers War of Word: Priyanka Chaturvedi Slams ‘Petty’ Politics, BJP Blasts RahulHow Russia May Open Central Asia For India As West Pushes Harder: Kugelman Explains The Power ShiftAviation Meltdown Escalates As IndiGo Cancels 400 Flights And Government Enforces Fare ControlsUS Singer Calls PM Modi World’s Top Leader, Warns Washington To Recalibrate Its India Strategy FastEx-Pentagon Official Says Asim Munir Must Be Arrested As He Slams US Policy, Calls For India Apology123PhotostoriesSara Khan marries Krish Pathak in both Hindu and Muslim rituals, drops new photos; says ‘Qubool Hai se Saat Phere tak’Stressed and stiff?

NEW DELHI: A new controversy seems to be building up over discussions within the govt for a satellite-assisted location tracking of mobile phone users for the need of law-enforcement agencies and disaster management officials. The matter, which has been in discussions for over five years now, had seen a suggestion by mobile phone operators lobby, COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India), that the govt order compulsory activation of A-GPS (Assisted GPS) technology, which uses satellite and mobile data for giving accurate and accelerated location of an individual. However, no action has been taken on the matter by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) which had been conducting the discussions with the industry – both mobile operators as well as device makers. Currently, mobile operators provide location of individuals by tracking users through mobile towers which lack pin-pointed accuracy, while also being delayed in giving the coordinates. Sources said the matter has been in discussions for over five years, but not much has progressed around its implementation over issues related to user privacy as well as reluctance of device makers such as Apple and Samsung over a mandated activation. The device makers argue that user consent needs to be taken before activation of pin-pointed satellite-based location tracking. Also, they have expressed fears that other service providers, and even hackers, may misuse the always-on location tracking services, violating user privacy. The issue, however, came to the fore at a time when the govt rescinded on a plan to mandate pre-installation of Sanchar Saathi app after outcry over possible state surveillance as well as user privacy violations. In this case too, global manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung had sounded out the department of telecom – which had issued the order of pre-installation of Sanchar Saathi app – of their objections to the measure, citing user privacy. “The issue about satellite-assisted tracking is an old one, and has been in discussions for years after demands made to this effect by law enforcement agencies and disaster management authorities. The agencies felt that a faster, and more accurate location, will help immensely in pinpointing the exact location of individuals,” a source said. However, the source added,” No decision has been taken on the matter. There has been no direction from the govt.” COAI has members such as Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea. The device makers have been represented by India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA).End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’Maligning Hindu Way Of Life’: PM Modi Calls Out Colonial Mindset Over ‘Hindu Rate Of Growth’ LabelUP CM Yogi Slams Parties ‘Insulting Babasaheb’s Legacy’, Announces Security For Ambedkar Statues’Engaging Atmosphere Reigned’: Shashi Tharoor After State Dinner With Russian President Putin’Sab Jagah Pohchenge’: Yogi Adityanath On What’s Next After Ram Temple, ‘Kashi-Mathura’ Slogan’Black Day’: Owaisi Targets Modi Govt, Questions Acquittals In Babri Masjid Demolition CasePutin Dinner Snub Triggers War of Word: Priyanka Chaturvedi Slams ‘Petty’ Politics, BJP Blasts RahulHow Russia May Open Central Asia For India As West Pushes Harder: Kugelman Explains The Power ShiftAviation Meltdown Escalates As IndiGo Cancels 400 Flights And Government Enforces Fare ControlsUS Singer Calls PM Modi World’s Top Leader, Warns Washington To Recalibrate Its India Strategy FastEx-Pentagon Official Says Asim Munir Must Be Arrested As He Slams US Policy, Calls For India Apology123Photostories10 reminders every working mom who feels guilty needs to hear todayBigg Boss 19: From making shocking revelations about a luxurious lifestyle to Ekta Kapoor offering her a project; finalist Tanya Mittal’s journey10 tips to keep your baby warm and cozy this winter9 one-pot South Indian vegetarian rice dishes to try’3BHK’ to ‘Aan Paavam Pollathathu’:5 Tamil films of 2025 that won hearts with natural acting and nuanced storiesThe 5 stages of awakening: Find out where you stand todayShah Rukh Khan-Kajol to Varun Dhawan-Alia Bhatt: Bollywood’s most loved onscreen couples who never dated in real lifeFrom Weight loss to Cholesterol: Benefits of Edamame Beans and 6 ways to cook them‘Bigg Boss 19’: Farrhana Bhatt’s breakdown to Abhishek Bajaj’s eviction most emotional moments of the seasonCentre’s Big Boost to Rail Infra in Telangana: Rs 35,045-Crore Plan with 20 Sanctioned Projects with 6 New Lines & 14 Doubling Works123Hot PicksIndigo Flight DelayPutin India VisitWorld NewsGold rate todaySilver rate todayPublic Holidays NovemberBank Holidays NovemberTop TrendingCaeleb Dressel Net WorthDelhi Airport AdvisoryIndigo Flight CancellationCandace OwensAryna Sabalenka Net WorthHow to get danny Phantom in FortniteTravis KelceJohn Cena FinalJEE Advanced Exam DateDDA RecruitmentExam Schedule

Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah stated the INDIA alliance is “on life support,” citing internal infighting and weak organization as reasons for its inability to challenge the BJP. He blamed the bloc for Nitish Kumar’s return to the NDA and highlighted organizational failures, suggesting Congress must lead any serious opposition challenge. Omar Abdullah (PTI image) NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said that the opposition INDIA alliance is currently “on life support”. He said that internal infighting is weakening its ability to challenge the BJP.Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in New Delhi, Abdullah said the opposition bloc is struggling to function as a united force against the ruling party’s strong election machinery.“We’re sort of on life support, but every once in a while somebody brings out his paddles and gives us a bit of a shock and we get up again. But then results like Bihar happen, and we slump down again, and then somebody has to wheel us into the ICU,” the National Conference leader said.Referring to the recent election results in Bihar, where the INDIA alliance suffered a massive defeat against the NDA, he blamed the opposition bloc for driving Nitish Kumar back into the ruling alliance.“I believe that we pushed Nitish Kumar back into the arms of the NDA,” he said.He also pointed to organisational failures within the INDIA bloc, including the decision to exclude the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) from the Bihar seat-sharing arrangement, despite the party’s presence in the state. According to Abdullah, the alliance has failed to take cohesive and strategic decisions. He said the BJP begins preparing for the next election almost immediately after one ends, while the opposition often starts its preparations only months before polls, sometimes finalising alliances just before the last date for filing nominations. When asked if the outcome of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was a fluke, Abdullah rejected the suggestion. “No, I think the country sent a message to the Central government and to Prime Minister Modi in 2024 that things are not as rosy as they were made out to be,” he said.He also said that after the 2024 elections, the Centre showed that it can work in an alliance format. “From calling it a BJP government, they called themselves an NDA government. These are small changes, but they matter,” Abdullah said. He added that the government’s style of functioning has become more consultative.BJP hits backBJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla, reacting to Abdullah’s remarks said that he had “shown a mirror” to the INDIA alliance. In a post on X, Poonawalla wrote: “Omar Abdullah shows a mirror to INDI.”.He added that the INDI alliance, led by the Congress, pushed Nitish Kumar out, gave an “unfair deal” to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in Bihar.”INDI alliance ( read Congress ) pushed out Nitish Kumar ji. INDI alliance gave unfair deal to JMM in Bihar so if they leave don’t be surprised,” his post read.Poonawalla further said that the NDA is a “Majboot alliance” with a clear mission and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as its leader and called Congress a “Majboor alliance of ambition and corruption”.”NDA is Majboot alliance full of mission & vision with Modi ji as leader. Indi is Majboor alliance of ambition and corruption with Rahul Baba at helm,” he wrote.Poonawalla also said that Abdullah’s party has earlier taken positions different from other INDIA bloc partners, including on issues related to alleged “vote chori”.(with inputs from PTI)About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Gaurav Gogoi (ANI image) NEW DELHI: Congress MP and deputy leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has written to external affairs minister S Jaishankar, urging a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore this September.Garg, one of the most celebrated cultural icons of Northeast India, was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival 2025, organised by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) with support from the High Commission of India in Singapore. In his letter, Gogoi drew attention to a statement made by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the state Assembly on November 24, where he claimed that findings of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police suggested that Garg’s death “was a murder.” The chief minister further stated that multiple individuals have been booked and that the alleged crime was planned and executed by a group.Raising serious concerns, Gogoi said one of the accused named in the ongoing investigation had direct links with the organisation of the Singapore festival. According to him, the individual in question ran an organisation that has, over several years, received “substantial payments amounting to several lakhs of rupees” from the MEA for managing similar cultural events.Calling the association between an MEA-linked event’s organiser and an accused in a murder case “deeply troubling,” the MP sought official clarification on the nature of this relationship. He also expressed disappointment over media reports suggesting that the North East India Festival in Singapore proceeded as scheduled on September 19-2, despite Garg’s sudden death.Gogoi said that, given the stature of Zubeen Garg and the shock caused by the incident, it would have been appropriate for the government to cancel or postpone the festival. Stressing that the event was an official Government of India engagement, he urged the MEA to issue a public statement addressing the Assam Chief Minister’s claims and clarifying all associations under question. The MP emphasised that the people of the Northeast and the grieving family deserve “truth and justice” and called for the ministry’s immediate intervention to ensure transparency in the matter.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosHow Russia May Open Central Asia For India As West Pushes Harder: Kugelman Explains The Power ShiftAviation Meltdown Escalates As IndiGo Cancels 400 Flights And Government Enforces Fare ControlsUS Singer Calls PM Modi World’s Top Leader, Warns Washington To Recalibrate Its India Strategy FastEx-Pentagon Official Says Asim Munir Must Be Arrested As He Slams US Policy, Calls For India ApologyAfter Rajnath’s Babri Remark, Sonia Targets BJP In Fiery Counterattack Over Maligning Nehru LegacyMurshidabad Tense as Humayun Kabir Faces Heat Over ‘Babri Masjid’ Foundation and Heavy DeploymentEx-Pentagon Official Credits Trump For India-Russia Bonhomie, Calls His India Policy HypocriticalShashi Tharoor’s Presence At Putin Dinner Sparks Congress Outrage Over Rahul, Kharge Missing Invite’Grow Together’: In Parting Speech, Putin Adopts PM Modi’s ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ Mantra”Next Year in Russia…” Deputy PM Manturov Urges Indian Companies to Expand Bilateral Trade123Photostories‘Bigg Boss 19’: Farrhana Bhatt’s breakdown to Abhishek Bajaj’s eviction most emotional moments of the seasonCentre’s Big Boost to Rail Infra in Telangana: Rs 35,045-Crore Plan with 20 Sanctioned Projects with 6 New Lines & 14 Doubling WorksWant toned thighs? 7 workouts that work wonders on heavy thighs6 spiritual truths only Banaras can teach you about lifeMaharashtra’s bold transformation drive: Dombivli rises with next-gen sports arenas and iconic civic projectsPumpkin health benefits: Why this humble veggie is a perfect winter superfoodFun Christmas traditions to make your holiday season extra special7 adorable cat breeds that will steal your heart in seconds!‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, ‘Highway’, ‘Kedarnath’: Movies that will inspire your next mountain getawaySonam Kapoor stuns in double Banarasi Kadhwa border saree: Is this the most iconic pregnancy saree look ever?123Hot PicksIndigo Flight DelayPutin India VisitWorld NewsGold rate todaySilver rate todayPublic Holidays NovemberBank Holidays NovemberTop TrendingDelhi Student MurderDelhi Airport AdvisoryIndigo Flight CancellationCandace OwensAryna Sabalenka Net WorthHow to get danny Phantom in FortniteTravis KelceJohn Cena FinalJEE Advanced Exam DateDDA RecruitmentExam Schedule

The Delhi High Court has issued notices to a retired IAS officer and digital platforms in a defamation suit filed by former J&K Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta. Mehta disputes allegations of a “Jal Jeevan Mission scam” made by Ashok Kumar Parmar, citing a lack of documentary evidence and contradicting official inquiries. Representative image NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court has issued notices to retired IAS officer Ashok Kumar Parmar and several digital platforms in a defamation suit filed by former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta over Parmar’s public allegations of corruption relating to Jal Jeevan Mission implementation in the Union territory. The Rs 2.55 crore civil defamation suit disputes claims by Parmar, who was principal secretary in J&K in charge of Jal Jeevan Mission in 2022, of a “Jal Jeevan Mission scam,” in which he had cited figures ranging from Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 14, 000 crore, without backing these with any documents. He had sought to link the purported irregularities to Mehta, who as then chief secretary was his boss. Parmar claimed to have written to various agencies, including the CBI, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, and the Bureau of Public Enterprises, J&,K regarding the alleged scam. He even shared information regarding these purported letters with the media. Four news websites that published his allegations have also been named as defendants in the defamation case filed by Mehta.RTI queries filed by Mehta with the CBI, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, and the Bureau of Public Enterprises, J&K, elicited replies from each denying the receipt of any complaint from Parmar.According to Mehta’s plaint, every institutional check has contradicted the allegations made by Parmar. The Anti-Corruption Bureau of J&K examined all claims and found none substantiated, reporting no departures from procedure in tendering, execution, payments, or supervision. An RTI response from the Jal Shakti Department too did not confirm any irregularity on record. The plaint states that a large-scale scam was structurally impossible under the digital governance architecture introduced in J&K, which includes BEAMS for real-time financial transparency, end-to-end e-Tendering, PaySys for digital payments, PROOF for geo-tagged photo verification, mandatory physical checks, and public dashboards — all of which generate a continuous audit trail. It further notes that the chief secretary has no role in contract approvals, which are handled exclusively by contract committees.Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav has issued notice to all defendants and listed the matter for February 3, 2026, when arguments on Mehta’s plea for an interim injunction will be heard. The court will next examine the evidentiary foundation of the allegations and the claim of reputational harm.About the AuthorBharti JainBharti Jain is senior editor with The Times of India, New Delhi. “Will establish system to protect Baba Saheb statues from miscreants”: UP CM Yogi on BR Ambedkar death anniversary Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday paid tribute to Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar on his death anniversary and said that the “government will now establish a system to protect Baba Saheb statues” from miscreants’ malicious attempts to damage them.CM Yogi announced a series of measures to protect Ambedkar statues and strengthen welfare initiatives for marginalised communities.Speaking at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Mahasabha office complex in Hazratganj, CM Yogi said, “Today, our government is taking another important decision. Wherever statues of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar are installed in Uttar Pradesh, miscreants frequently come and tamper with them, making malicious attempts to damage them. Our government will now establish a system to protect these statues. This will include building a boundary wall and, where the statue lacks a roof, installing a canopy over it. These measures will ensure the safe and respectful protection of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar’s statues. Additionally, we will complete the program to equip every slum, Dalit settlement, Scheduled Caste settlement, and tribal settlement with proper connectivity.” Launching a scathing attack on a senior Congress leader, serving as Congress President, who refused to sing ‘Vande Mataram’ in 1923, Yogi asserted that parties advocating for appeasement policies are “not only damaging India but also insulting Baba Saheb”.”We feel proud of our Constitution. We feel proud of Baba Saheb Ambedkar. Even then, he warned us about all those dangers… In 1923, a senior Congress leader, serving as Congress President, refused to sing ‘Vande Mataram.’ As he faced his final moments, he expressed a desire to die in Jerusalem. Baba Saheb remarked that someone who, despite being born in India and enjoying its benefits, does not regard Indian soil as sacred cannot truly serve the interests of Indians. Sadly, parties advocating for appeasement policies are not only damaging India but also insulting Baba Saheb Ambedkar and engaging in a disgraceful effort to strip citizens of their rights. Under the leadership of PM Modi, the new India feels proud of its great men and honours them,” CM Yogi said.CM Yogi also announced measures to improve livelihoods for government and sanitation workers, adding that the “double-engine government is working to provide them with all kinds of facilities”.”A corporation has been established, and within the next 1-2 months, the government will guarantee a minimum honorarium for all Class IV employees, sanitation workers, and contract workers. Our ‘Zero Poverty’ campaign is also part of this. We are nearing completion in identifying all the marginalised groups – Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Most Backward Classes – who remain deprived and have yet to access these services’ benefits. This double-engine government is working to provide them with all kinds of facilities and will continue to advance that campaign,” he added.Emphasising inclusive development, the Chief Minister said that PM Modi, with the spirit of everyone’s support and development, ensured that the benefits of schemes, without discrimination, reached every poor.He said, “It is our good fortune that, inspired by the teachings of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, such campaigns are underway across the country today under the leadership of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. When Baba Saheb drafted the Constitution of India, fulfilling his responsibility as its architect, he included three important words in its preamble: Justice, equality, and fraternity. If we examine these three words, PM Modi, with the spirit of everyone’s support and development, ensured that the benefits of schemes, without discrimination, reached every poor, deprived, Dalit, backwards, woman, and youth. This is part of the same ideals of equality, justice, and fraternity that Baba Saheb presented to the people of India in the preamble to the Constitution.”Earlier today, the commemoration of the 70th Mahaparinirvan Diwas began with a floral tribute from President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan, PM Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Parliamentarians, and many other dignitaries who attended the VIP session in the early hours of the day at Parliament.Dr Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a pioneering advocate of social empowerment, passed away on December 6, 1956. Mahaparinirvan Diwas is observed annually to commemorate his contributions to nation-building, social justice and empowerment of marginalised communities.
