In the last 2–3 days, our votes shifted to the NDA to prevent the RJD from coming to power,” Uday Singh said.”The Delhi bomb blast had an impact in Seemanchal, as it was used to polarise votes. We failed to convince Muslim voters, and this is an area where we clearly fell short,” he added.Responding to a query on whether Prashant Kishor would remain active in politics as the JD(U) won more than 25 seats, Singh said, “You should ask this question to Kishor only”.Meanwhile, Jan Suraaj party’s state unit chief Manoj Bharti said that Bihar assembly election results were beyond party’s imagination. Throughout his campaign, Kishor emphasised employment, infrastructure, law and order in Bihar and yet failed to win a single seat.Despite the high-profile launch and campaign promises, the debutant party suffered poor results across constituencies. In Tarapur, its candidate Santosh Kumar managed only 3,898 votes.Meanwhile, NDA registered a historic landslide victory in the 2025 Bihar Elections, winning 202 of the 243 seats in the state; meanwhile, the Mahagathbandhan could only secure 35 seats.NDA secured a three-fourths majority in the 243-member House. This is the second time the NDA has crossed the 200 mark in the assembly polls. The message, originally written in Hindi, loosely translates to: “Public service is an unceasing process, an endless journey. Ups and downs are inevitable. Buried among the usual LinkedIn noise of job updates and pitches was a note from a teenager in Mumbai to a Stanford grad student he had never met. Neither knew it then, but that small act of digital courage would set off a chain of events spanning three cities, two continents, and a problem hiding in plain sight inside America’s trillion construction industry. What followed was the story of a startup coming together, a journey of three immigrants, each carrying a different piece of the puzzle, discovering that their paths were quietly converging toward the same idea.The cold LinkedIn message from Aajinkya Singh, a self-taught engineer from Mumbai, landed in the inbox of Abhinav Jha, then a graduate student at Stanford. Today, the two are co-founders of one of the fastest-growing construction technology startups in the United States.Aajinkya enrolled in college at 15, taught himself to code at 16, and sold his first software product to a Dubai-based company at 17. His passion for building products led him to juggle multiple part-time roles throughout college, gaining hands-on experience in software development and entrepreneurship.Initially, Aajinkya reached out to Abhinav to learn more about the US college application process. Instead, the conversation quickly evolved into a shared vision: starting a company together.Before Stanford, Abhinav had left a promising career at Deloitte, where he became one of the firm’s youngest Managers. As the founder of a 30-person non-profit, he had long been driven by the desire to build something of his own.For more than a year, Abhinav and Aajinkya explored multiple ideas, none of which gained significant traction. That changed in January 2025, when Abhinav received a call from his friend Alex Park, a Korean immigrant and former construction project manager. Frustrated by how existing tools were built for managers rather than builders, Alex had left his job to pursue an MBA at MIT Sloan with a clear goal: to start a company that would transform construction workflows.In January 2025, the trio formally teamed up to form DAERO. Within weeks, they deployed a minimum viable product on active job sites, serving general contractors and subcontractors on multi-billion-dollar commercial projects across the US.After his full-time day job, Aajinkya spent his nights building and maintaining the product to keep DAERO moving forward. What followed was the story of a startup coming together, a journey of three immigrants, each carrying a different piece of the puzzle, discovering that their paths were quietly converging toward the same idea.The cold LinkedIn message from Aajinkya Singh, a self-taught engineer from Mumbai, landed in the inbox of Abhinav Jha, then a graduate student at Stanford. Today, the two are co-founders of one of the fastest-growing construction technology startups in the United States.Aajinkya enrolled in college at 15, taught himself to code at 16, and sold his first software product to a Dubai-based company at 17. His passion for building products led him to juggle multiple part-time roles throughout college, gaining hands-on experience in software development and entrepreneurship.Initially, Aajinkya reached out to Abhinav to learn more about the US college application process. He told people not to support such candidates “even if they belong to your caste and if none of those in the fray is without a taint, opt for NOTA”. Before the party took action, the former Union minister had also appealed to the Election Commission to enforce the Model Code of Conduct more strictly. NEW DELHI: Union minister and LJP (RV) chief Chirag Paswan on Saturday met chief minister Nitish Kumar and congratulated him for NDA’s sweeping victory in the assembly elections.After the meet, Chirag refuted speculation about rift between LJP (RV) and JD(U), claiming that Nitish appreciated the role of every alliance partner in NDA.”I met the CM, congratulated him and extended him best wishes. NDA registered a historic victory under the leadership of Nitish Kumar. So, a delegation of LJP(RV) met him and congratulated him. I am delighted that the CM appreciated the role of every alliance partner in the NDA,” Chirag said.“He supported the LJP(RV) candidate when he went to vote. In Alauli, where I vote, I supported JD(U) candidate. This shows that those were misleading regarding JD(U) and LJP(RV) were just setting false narrative…”,” he added.This comes after rift between the two parties surfaced during the seat sharing deal within NDA ahead of Bihar polls.During the run up to the elections, Chirag had also criticised Nitish over deteriorating law and order situation in the state.”I feel ashamed that I am supporting a government where crime has become uncontrolled,” Chirag had said.Interestingly, this was the first time when LJP(RV) and JD(U) were contesting the assembly elections together under the umbrella of NDA.In 2020 Bihar assembly elections, claiming himself as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Hanuman”, Chirag decided to go solo and fielded 135 candidates in fray — specifically harming JD(U) poll prospects. LJP(RV)’s candidates acted as vote-cutters, contributing to JD(U)’s sharp decline from 71 seats in 2015 to just 43 in 2020, its lowest tally in years.However, in 2025, LJP(RV) emerged as a key force within the NDA, winning 19 of the 29 seats it contested and helping the alliance cross the 200-seat mark.Paswan said his party chose from a “pool of 38 seats” offered by the BJP, stressing “quality over quantity.” After multiple rounds of discussions with BJP and JD(U) leaders, LJP(RV) secured its position as the largest junior ally. Other smaller allies received six seats each, showing how negotiations tilted in Paswan’s favour.The NDA registered a historic landslide victory in the 2025 Bihar Elections, winning 202 of the 243 seats in the state; meanwhile, the Mahagathbandhan could only secure 35 seats.NDA secured a three-fourths majority in the 243-member House. This is the second time the NDA has crossed the 200 mark in the assembly polls. In the 2010 polls, it had won 206 seats.In the NDA, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 89 seats, Janata Dal (United) won 85, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) (LJPRV) won 19, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) (HAMS) won five, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha won four seats.The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) won 25 seats, Indian National Congress 6, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) – CPI(ML)(L) – two, Indian Inclusive Party (IIP) – one, and Communist Party of India (Marxist) – CPI(M) – one seat.All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won five seats, and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) got one seat.The Bihar assembly elections were conducted across two phases on November 6 and 11, respectively. I am delighted that the CM appreciated the role of every alliance partner in the NDA,” Chirag said.“He supported the LJP(RV) candidate when he went to vote. In Alauli, where I vote, I supported JD(U) candidate. This shows that those were misleading regarding JD(U) and LJP(RV) were just setting false narrative…”,” he added.This comes after rift between the two parties surfaced during the seat sharing deal within NDA ahead of Bihar polls.During the run up to the elections, Chirag had also criticised Nitish over deteriorating law and order situation in the state.”I feel ashamed that I am supporting a government where crime has become uncontrolled,” Chirag had said.Interestingly, this was the first time when LJP(RV) and JD(U) were contesting the assembly elections together under the umbrella of NDA.In 2020 Bihar assembly elections, claiming himself as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Hanuman”, Chirag decided to go solo and fielded 135 candidates in fray — specifically harming JD(U) poll prospects. LJP(RV)’s candidates acted as vote-cutters, contributing to JD(U)’s sharp decline from 71 seats in 2015 to just 43 in 2020, its lowest tally in years.However, in 2025, LJP(RV) emerged as a key force within the NDA, winning 19 of the 29 seats it contested and helping the alliance cross the 200-seat mark.Paswan said his party chose from a “pool of 38 seats” offered by the BJP, stressing “quality over quantity.” After multiple rounds of discussions with BJP and JD(U) leaders, LJP(RV) secured its position as the largest junior ally. Other smaller allies received six seats each, showing how negotiations tilted in Paswan’s favour.The NDA registered a historic landslide victory in the 2025 Bihar Elections, winning 202 of the 243 seats in the state; meanwhile, the Mahagathbandhan could only secure 35 seats.NDA secured a three-fourths majority in the 243-member House. This is the second time the NDA has crossed the 200 mark in the assembly polls. In the 2010 polls, it had won 206 seats.In the NDA, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 89 seats, Janata Dal (United) won 85, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) (LJPRV) won 19, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) (HAMS) won five, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha won four seats.The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) won 25 seats, Indian National Congress 6, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) – CPI(ML)(L) – two, Indian Inclusive Party (IIP) – one, and Communist Party of India (Marxist) – CPI(M) – one seat.All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won five seats, and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) got one seat.The Bihar assembly elections were conducted across two phases on November 6 and 11, respectively. An accidental explosion at Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar killed nine people and injured 27 others. (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: The ministry of home affairs on Saturday ruled out any terror angle in the Nowgam police station blast case, terming it an “accidental explosion” that took place at the outskirts of Srinagar, killing 9 people and leaving several others injured.Deadly Explosion At Nowgam Station Exposes Scale Of 360 Kg Urban Terror Cache Seized From FaridabadAddressing a press briefing, Prashant Lokhande, joint secretary (J&K division), MHA, said: “Yesterday, at around 11:20 pm, an unfortunate accidental explosion took place inside the Nowgam Police Station.” “During the investigation of a terror module, a huge cache of explosive substances and chemicals had been recovered and kept securely in an open area of the police station.””As part of the standard procedure, these materials were being processed and forwarded for forensic examination.” “Due to their unstable and sensitive nature, they were being handled with utmost care. However, during the process, an accidental explosion occurred.””In this incident, nine people lost their lives, while 27 police personnel, two revenue officials, and three civilians sustained injuries. The injured were immediately rushed for medical care.””The police station building suffered severe damage, along with some surrounding structures. The cause of the accident is being investigated, and any other speculation is unnecessary.”Security personnel have cordoned off the area, and sniffer dogs have been deployed as part of the investigation.Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Nalin Prabhat also termed the massive explosion at the Nowgam police station as “accidental.”Prabhat said the explosives were recovered during the investigation of a “white-collar terror module” and had been transported from Faridabad in Haryana to the Nowgam police station, where they were kept in a secured open area within the premises.According to officials, the blast took place while a joint police and forensic team was examining the explosive material, which was part of a nearly 2,900 kg chemical cache recovered from an arrested doctor. The explosion triggered multiple secondary blasts and caused severe structural damage to the building.Sources said the probe is linked to the November 10 Delhi blast and to alleged objectionable posters found in Nowgam in October, which led to an FIR on October 19 and subsequent action against what was believed to be an inter-state Jaish-e-Mohammed module.Between October 20 and 27, two suspects were arrested from Shopian and Ganderbal, followed by the arrest of Dr Adil from Saharanpur on November 5. Through the power-play over ticket distribution and declaration of Tejaswi Yadav as the CM face of the alliance, one saw Bhattacharya playing a key role in ironing out differences between RJD and Congress.It is also felt that CPI(ML)’s going along with its Mahagathbandhan partner RJD’s decision to field Osama Shahab from Raghunathpur would not have gone unnoticed among the core support base of the Left party, impacting its image as a crusader for the marginalised. Osama’s late father and former Siwan MP Mohammad Shahabuddin was accused of ordering the 1997 killing of student activist Chandrashekhar, who was associated with the Left party and seen as his potential political rival.While CPI(ML) candidates won merely two seats – Paliganj and Karakat, the party lost in Agiaon (SC) by a narrow margin of 95 votes. In three other seats – Balrampur, Dumraon and Zeeradei, the margin of defeat was less than 3,000. The party contested 20 seats this time and its vote share sands at close to 3%. The other Left parties too have performed poorly, with CPI(M) winning just 1 of 4 seats as against 2 last time and CPI, which had won 2 seats last time, failing to open its account though it contested 6.Reflecting on the verdict the CPI(ML) general secretary said that the outcome “has the scars of SIR all over it. The role of the unprecedented money transfer operation amounting to Rs 30,000 crore among a beneficiary population of 3 crore defying all notions of election ethics and model code of conduct must also be taken into account.””A virtual repeat of the 2010 outcome after fifteen years when the credibility of the Nitish Kumar government has touched an all-time low and the Modi government too suffered a major loss of support just a year ago defies credulity. We will undertake a thorough analysis of the outcome and draw necessary lessons,” Bhattacharya added. CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby described the result as a setback for the ‘mahagathbandhan’ and accused the NDA of utilising the state machinery and resorting to all sorts of manipulation including the Rs 10,000 cash transfer to bank accounts of women beneficiaries ahead of polls. The party in a statement said that the “NDA benefited from the polarising communal and cateist rhetoric of its leaders, including the Prime Minister and home minister”. “All this drowned out the issues like unemployment and even vote chori raised by the mahagathbandhan,” Baby said. However, he called for introspection over how key players could have put up a more united fight to counter the NDA in the elections.A leader said that while the Mahagathbandhan was able to raise the ‘vote chori’ issue with the people effectively, somewhere the alliance on ground was unable to mobilise the people to come out and vote to seek transparency in the polling system.The Left party leaders also cite that the way RJD and Congress delayed resolving differences over ticket distribution sent out a negative message about the mahagathbandhan lacking unity. CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby described the result as a setback for the ‘mahagathbandhan’ and accused the NDA of utilising the state machinery and resorting to all sorts of manipulation including the Rs 10,000 cash transfer to bank accounts of women beneficiaries ahead of polls. The party in a statement said that the “NDA benefited from the polarising communal and cateist rhetoric of its leaders, including the Prime Minister and home minister”. “All this drowned out the issues like unemployment and even vote chori raised by the mahagathbandhan,” Baby said. However, he called for introspection over how key players could have put up a more united fight to counter the NDA in the elections.A leader said that while the Mahagathbandhan was able to raise the ‘vote chori’ issue with the people effectively, somewhere the alliance on ground was unable to mobilise the people to come out and vote to seek transparency in the polling system.The Left party leaders also cite that the way RJD and Congress delayed resolving differences over ticket distribution sent out a negative message about the mahagathbandhan lacking unity. ANI file photo NEW DELHI: Millions of citizens going online will have guaranteed control over their digital data while social media companies such as Facebook and Instagram will need verifiable parental consent before onboarding children, or those under 18 years, with the govt finally notifying rules to operationalise the digital personal data protection (DPDP) law that was originally passed by Parliament in Aug 2023.The much-awaited rules promise a consent-based regime to safeguard the data of users who go online for social media, ecommerce, gaming, banking, payments, and for availing govt services.Companies and organisations violating the rules will face penalties, up to Rs 250cr for serious failures to protect data and breaches.The rules also require companies to quickly inform users and the new data protection board about any data breach. New rules operationalizing the Digital Personal Data Protection law are now in effect, granting citizens control over their digital data and requiring verifiable parental consent for onboarding children. They added that this indicates enough wheat availability in the market and even the wholesale prices have dropped by around 12% compared to last year.At present, FCI has around 30.5 MT of wheat stock against the buffer requirement of 20.5 MT for Jan 1, 2026.Navneet Chitlangia, president of Roller Flour Millers’ Federation, said India has witnessed a bumper wheat harvest this season, and with a favourable monsoon, they anticipate yet another excellent harvest in the coming season. “In view of the robust domestic production, we have requested govt to lift the restrictions on wheat product exports so that India may reclaim its traditional markets across the globe,” he said.Before the export ban of wheat products, India used to send shipments of flour, maida and sooji and other products to Africa, Gulf and south Asian countries. The NDA secured a decisive victory in Bihar, leveraging Nitish Kumar’s local appeal and Narendra Modi’s national influence. This winning combination offered voters stability and delivery, reinforced by effective coalition management and a strong campaign against the ‘Jungle Raj’ legacy. Women voters, in particular, played a crucial role in the alliance’s success. 1 The Ni–Mo effectNitish Kumar’s local goodwill paired perfectly with Narendra Modi’s national appeal. Voters read this combo as offering stability+delivery: a CM known for roads, power and policing and a PM identified with scale, speed and organisation. The optics of parity (near 50:50 seat-sharing) and a visibly cordial equation projected ‘co-ownership’ of governance. Major projects for Bihar in the central budget and launch of welfare schemes armour-plated what was already a strong platform. Coming after wins in Maharashtra, Haryana and Delhi, the landslide in Bihar is another sign that the dip in BJP’s Lok Sabha tally was an aberration rather than a pointer to a new pattern. That Modi continues to swing polls, even those where he himself is not on the ballot, despite being at the helm for 12 years, makes for a unique case of political resilience in the age of volatile expectations.2 NDA’s art of running coalitionsThis election was a masterclass demonstration by NDA in both making and running a social and political coalition. The winning alliance expanded its tent by bringing in and even indulging Chirag Paswan with a generous seat share. In hindsight, NDA would have probably made it without Upendra Kushwaha and even Jitan Ram Manjhi. But the need for crafting a wider social coalition prevailed over maximalist calculations. The results were evident at the ground level. BJP and JDU divided seats with unusual clarity, and kept campaign discipline despite inherent contradictions. JDU operated with rare professionalism, with working president Sanjay Jha privileging winnability over sentiments and co-ordinating with BJP’s in-charge Dharmendra Pradhan to select candidates. The joint aim was to ensure district-wise compatibility among partners. This helped iron out local wrinkles. Each NDA partner brought value to the table.3 Memories of jungle rajThe misgovernance during Lalu Yadav’s tenure remained a powerful theme. Voters still remember the anarchy, corruption, brutish single caste-dominance and general non-governance under the 15-year-long ‘Lalu-Rabri Raj’. After Tejashwi Yadav was projected as CM candidate, the most prominent beneficiary of Lalu’s reign made for an easy target when NDA promised ‘Mangal Raj’. Modi and Amit Shah stuck to this theme throughout the campaign, and got, ironically, effective assistance from overenthusiastic supporters of RJD. NDA had a field day with telling voters about RJD toughies’ ‘dream’ of wielding katta (country-made pistols) and Bhaiyaa Ki Satta (Tejashwi’s govt).4 Women, NDA’s better halfSchemes launched in the run-up to the contest — assistance of Rs 10,000 for members of Jeevika Self Help Group, hike in old-age pension — helped the alliance build upon the big amount of goodwill that was already there because of women quotas in jobs and local bodies, as well as educational assistance, free ration and LPG connection. Plus, there was NDA’s housing schemes, and its delivery of improved law and order. Women were among the worst sufferers of RJD’s Jungle Raj, where crimes like kidnapping and rape were rampant. Women voters seemed pretty determined not to lose the freedom they enjoyed under Nitish-led NDA. Bhojpuri songs like ‘RJD ke maal’ and ‘Ghar se utha leb’ (we will take you away even from your home), rekindled women’s fear that a RJD victory will again confine them to their homes. Reporters covering the campaign frequently came across women who not only forcefully articulated their preference for NDA, but asserted that they would ensure that their menfolk voted as they themselves did. After the two phases, pundits were split in interpreting women’s lead of 10 percentage points over males in turnout. Results leave little doubt what that big women turnout meant.5 Pouncing on MGB’s mistakesModi’s popularity and gratitude for Nitish delivering on basic governance were key factors for NDA when it came to warding off MGB’s and Prashant Kishore’s attempts to cut into the nonYadav OBCs, EBCs and upper caste votes. In fact, the sheer scale of NDA’s victory suggests that welfare schemes may have helped it take away slices of votes from at least ‘MY’ (Muslim-Yadav) women. Aggressive behaviour by many Yadavs and the alliance’s sponsorship of Osama, the son of the dreaded “gangster” politician Shahabuddin, were major mistakes by MGB. This ensured that NDA’s so-called “coalition of extremes” — EBCs and dalits at one end and upper castes at the other — remained intact.6 NDA’s nimble responsesA great example of the winning alliance’s ability to think out of the box was its huge patronage for Chhath Puja. Modi is credited with the idea by BJP, which elevated what used to be a strictly regional festival to a national celebration. This had a big impact on many Biharis, who saw this as the state acquiring a profile it never had before. GOI ran thousands of special trains for Biharis who went home for the festival, Chhath songs played at 100 railway stations across the country. Rahul Gandhi’s ill-advised criticism of Modi on this count only played into the hands of BJP.7 RJD stuck in MYThe Muslim-Yadav core vote hasn’t deserted RJD in a big way, but the very strength of this coalition put it at a disadvantage when it came to appealing to other social groups. EBCs in particular were put off by Yadav rhetoric. Because RJD’s biggest strength turned into a key vulnerability, the party lost heavily in constituencies where it needed the additional votes to make the cut. It was particularly handicapped in attracting women from outside the fold and may have, in fact, lost some women voters from its ranks to the competition. BJP may now make overtures to Yadavs, and the result will reinforce JDU’s belief that Muslims continue to have a soft spot for Nitish.8 Rahul’s misjudged focus on vote ‘chori’Rahul Gandhi’s allegations found almost no takers among voters, whose on-ground experience of EC’s SIR did not support his claims of disenfranchisement. It was a replay of his 2019 campaign theme that went hammer and tongs on Rafale, and proved to be a dud. His obsession with SIR, which became his pet theme, resulted in the loss of valuable electioneering time, which could have been far better used to focus on bread-and-butter issues. Tejashwi was forced to follow suit. Rahul drew wrong lessons from the crowds he attracted. Most people at his rallies were from MY groups. Crowds at roadshows are never a good predictor of votes. Plus, Rahul, for a while, chose to act uppity with Tejashwi. That affected the cohesion of the opposition alliance.9 Tejashwi never quite measured upHe was weighed down by the very legacy of which he has been the main beneficiary. His effort to project himself as a clean break from the RJD’s Jungle Raj past ran headlong into the fact of him being Lalu’s chosen heir and a prominent co-accused in high-profile corruption cases. Ultra-zealous supporters ensured that the link with the past was not severed in voter memory. There was also his reluctance to engage with voters on ground level on a sustained basis, something Lalu was good at during his heydays. His son’s election-time overdrive was no substitute for the toil that helped his father. Crucially, his reckless promises cut little ice with voters.10 Forward vs backward doesn’t work anymoreOnce a winning theme in Bihar’s caste politics, it has lost its force in part because upper castes have reconciled themselves to the loss of power. There’s no threat from the top for non-upper castes and that both Modi and Nitish are OBCs, was again a big plus for NDA. The NDA secured a decisive victory in Bihar, leveraging Nitish Kumar’s local appeal and Narendra Modi’s national influence. This winning combination offered voters stability and delivery, reinforced by effective coalition management and a strong campaign against the ‘Jungle Raj’ legacy. Women voters, in particular, played a crucial role in the alliance’s success. 1 The Ni–Mo effectNitish Kumar’s local goodwill paired perfectly with Narendra Modi’s national appeal. Voters read this combo as offering stability+delivery: a CM known for roads, power and policing and a PM identified with scale, speed and organisation. The optics of parity (near 50:50 seat-sharing) and a visibly cordial equation projected ‘co-ownership’ of governance. Major projects for Bihar in the central budget and launch of welfare schemes armour-plated what was already a strong platform. Coming after wins in Maharashtra, Haryana and Delhi, the landslide in Bihar is another sign that the dip in BJP’s Lok Sabha tally was an aberration rather than a pointer to a new pattern. That Modi continues to swing polls, even those where he himself is not on the ballot, despite being at the helm for 12 years, makes for a unique case of political resilience in the age of volatile expectations.2 NDA’s art of running coalitionsThis election was a masterclass demonstration by NDA in both making and running a social and political coalition. The winning alliance expanded its tent by bringing in and even indulging Chirag Paswan with a generous seat share. In hindsight, NDA would have probably made it without Upendra Kushwaha and even Jitan Ram Manjhi. But the need for crafting a wider social coalition prevailed over maximalist calculations. The results were evident at the ground level. BJP and JDU divided seats with unusual clarity, and kept campaign discipline despite inherent contradictions. JDU operated with rare professionalism, with working president Sanjay Jha privileging winnability over sentiments and co-ordinating with BJP’s in-charge Dharmendra Pradhan to select candidates. The joint aim was to ensure district-wise compatibility among partners. This helped iron out local wrinkles. Each NDA partner brought value to the table.3 Memories of jungle rajThe misgovernance during Lalu Yadav’s tenure remained a powerful theme. Voters still remember the anarchy, corruption, brutish single caste-dominance and general non-governance under the 15-year-long ‘Lalu-Rabri Raj’. After Tejashwi Yadav was projected as CM candidate, the most prominent beneficiary of Lalu’s reign made for an easy target when NDA promised ‘Mangal Raj’. Modi and Amit Shah stuck to this theme throughout the campaign, and got, ironically, effective assistance from overenthusiastic supporters of RJD. NDA had a field day with telling voters about RJD toughies’ ‘dream’ of wielding katta (country-made pistols) and Bhaiyaa Ki Satta (Tejashwi’s govt).4 Women, NDA’s better halfSchemes launched in the run-up to the contest — assistance of Rs 10,000 for members of Jeevika Self Help Group, hike in old-age pension — helped the alliance build upon the big amount of goodwill that was already there because of women quotas in jobs and local bodies, as well as educational assistance, free ration and LPG connection. Plus, there was NDA’s housing schemes, and its delivery of improved law and order. Women were among the worst sufferers of RJD’s Jungle Raj, where crimes like kidnapping and rape were rampant. Women voters seemed pretty determined not to lose the freedom they enjoyed under Nitish-led NDA. Bhojpuri songs like ‘RJD ke maal’ and ‘Ghar se utha leb’ (we will take you away even from your home), rekindled women’s fear that a RJD victory will again confine them to their homes. Reporters covering the campaign frequently came across women who not only forcefully articulated their preference for NDA, but asserted that they would ensure that their menfolk voted as they themselves did. After the two phases, pundits were split in interpreting women’s lead of 10 percentage points over males in turnout. Results leave little doubt what that big women turnout meant.5 Pouncing on MGB’s mistakesModi’s popularity and gratitude for Nitish delivering on basic governance were key factors for NDA when it came to warding off MGB’s and Prashant Kishore’s attempts to cut into the nonYadav OBCs, EBCs and upper caste votes. In fact, the sheer scale of NDA’s victory suggests that welfare schemes may have helped it take away slices of votes from at least ‘MY’ (Muslim-Yadav) women. Aggressive behaviour by many Yadavs and the alliance’s sponsorship of Osama, the son of the dreaded “gangster” politician Shahabuddin, were major mistakes by MGB. This ensured that NDA’s so-called “coalition of extremes” — EBCs and dalits at one end and upper castes at the other — remained intact.6 NDA’s nimble responsesA great example of the winning alliance’s ability to think out of the box was its huge patronage for Chhath Puja. Modi is credited with the idea by BJP, which elevated what used to be a strictly regional festival to a national celebration. This had a big impact on many Biharis, who saw this as the state acquiring a profile it never had before. GOI ran thousands of special trains for Biharis who went home for the festival, Chhath songs played at 100 railway stations across the country. Rahul Gandhi’s ill-advised criticism of Modi on this count only played into the hands of BJP.7 RJD stuck in MYThe Muslim-Yadav core vote hasn’t deserted RJD in a big way, but the very strength of this coalition put it at a disadvantage when it came to appealing to other social groups. EBCs in particular were put off by Yadav rhetoric. Because RJD’s biggest strength turned into a key vulnerability, the party lost heavily in constituencies where it needed the additional votes to make the cut. It was particularly handicapped in attracting women from outside the fold and may have, in fact, lost some women voters from its ranks to the competition. BJP may now make overtures to Yadavs, and the result will reinforce JDU’s belief that Muslims continue to have a soft spot for Nitish.8 Rahul’s misjudged focus on vote ‘chori’Rahul Gandhi’s allegations found almost no takers among voters, whose on-ground experience of EC’s SIR did not support his claims of disenfranchisement. It was a replay of his 2019 campaign theme that went hammer and tongs on Rafale, and proved to be a dud. His obsession with SIR, which became his pet theme, resulted in the loss of valuable electioneering time, which could have been far better used to focus on bread-and-butter issues. Tejashwi was forced to follow suit. Rahul drew wrong lessons from the crowds he attracted. Most people at his rallies were from MY groups. Crowds at roadshows are never a good predictor of votes. Plus, Rahul, for a while, chose to act uppity with Tejashwi. That affected the cohesion of the opposition alliance.9 Tejashwi never quite measured upHe was weighed down by the very legacy of which he has been the main beneficiary. His effort to project himself as a clean break from the RJD’s Jungle Raj past ran headlong into the fact of him being Lalu’s chosen heir and a prominent co-accused in high-profile corruption cases. Ultra-zealous supporters ensured that the link with the past was not severed in voter memory. There was also his reluctance to engage with voters on ground level on a sustained basis, something Lalu was good at during his heydays. His son’s election-time overdrive was no substitute for the toil that helped his father. NEW DELHI: The five seats won by Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM in Seemanchal region of east Bihar, where Muslim voters have a substantial presence, reflect the community’s willingness to diversify its options in areas where it feels secure that experimentation may not benefit BJP.Results show that AIMIM won five of nine constituencies with more than 40% Muslim population, with its Muslim candidates securing decisive victories. They defeated four Muslim candidates fielded either by Mahagathbandhan or JDU, and in one seat, the party defeated a Hindu candidate from BJP. In three of the five victories, AIMIM defeated NDA candidates, including two from JDU. The five seats won by AIMIM are Baisi, Jokihat, Bahadurganj, Kochadhaman and Amour.The party also fielded seven candidates in constituencies where Muslim population ranges between 25% and 40%, but it failed to win any of these seats, which went to NDA. Except for Congress, which won Kishanganj seat, neither RJD nor CPIML-Liberation registered a victory in the belt – marking a shift from the decades-long pattern of Muslims backing an RJD-led alliance. NEW DELHI: The five seats won by Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM in Seemanchal region of east Bihar, where Muslim voters have a substantial presence, reflect the community’s willingness to diversify its options in areas where it feels secure that experimentation may not benefit BJP.Results show that AIMIM won five of nine constituencies with more than 40% Muslim population, with its Muslim candidates securing decisive victories. They defeated four Muslim candidates fielded either by Mahagathbandhan or JDU, and in one seat, the party defeated a Hindu candidate from BJP. In three of the five victories, AIMIM defeated NDA candidates, including two from JDU. The five seats won by AIMIM are Baisi, Jokihat, Bahadurganj, Kochadhaman and Amour.The party also fielded seven candidates in constituencies where Muslim population ranges between 25% and 40%, but it failed to win any of these seats, which went to NDA. His bargaining power came from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when LJP(RV) won all five seats it fought.At a time when the fortunes of other Dalit netas like Mayawati and Jitan Ram Manjhi have been on the decline, the son of former Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan has emer-ged a prominent face. The victory has also virtually put an end to the claim his uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras laid to Paswan senior’s legacy.
