NEW DELHI: Responding to Congress’ Facebook post pointing to the difference between 7.42 crore voters cited in EC’s Oct 6 press note announcing Bihar polls dated and the 7.45 crore electorate cited in its post-poll press statement dated Oct 11, the Election Commission on Saturday clarified that the gap was on account of the nearly 3 lakh additions made to the rolls between Oct 1, 2025 and ten days prior to the last date of nomination for both phases.As per election law, an eligible person can apply for enrolment until 10 days prior to the last date of nomination for each phase relevant to the election in which he shall be voting. “Hence, between October 1 and the deadline of 10 days prior to the last date of nomination for both phases, all valid applications for enrolment were scrutinised and eligible electors added so as to ensure that they were not denied their right to vote,” said an EC official.”This is why there were around 3 lakh additions in the electorate as shown in the EC press statement issued upon conclusion of Bihar poll,” the official added.About the AuthorBharti JainBharti Jain is senior editor with The Times of India, New Delhi. He made claims on Operation Sindoor “again” and India-Pakistan relations.The Nowgam incident resulted in nine casualties, 32 injuries and substantial structural damage while the Delhi blast killed 12 people.In his interview with ANI, Abdullah said, “I hope no such thing (Operation Sindoor) will happen. Nothing came out of it (Operation Sindoor). Our 18 people died. Our borders were compromised. I hope both nations improve their relations. That is the only way. I want to repeat what Vajpayee Ji said, friends can be changed, but neighbours cannot.”Abdullah also called for an extensive independent inquiry into the Nowgam incident today, suggesting that improper handling of explosives potentially led to the incident that resulted in nine fatalities and damage to residential buildings.In his earlier Srinagar interview with ANI, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister expressed concern about the handling of explosive materials by local authorities, emphasising the importance of consulting specialists. “This is our mistake, those who understand this explosive better, we should have talked to them first about how to deal with it instead of trying to handle it ourselves, you saw the result, nine people lost their lives. So much damage was caused to the houses there,” he had said.Abdullah discussed the impact of the Nowgam incident in relation to the current climate of distrust towards Kashmiri residents across the nation following the Delhi blast. “We haven’t yet come out of the crisis in Delhi where fingers are being pointed at every Kashmiri. When will that day come when they will accept that we are Indians and we are not responsible for this, ask those who are responsible why these doctors had to take this path? Video from the Congress office showed distraught cadres consoling Ram, who lost the seat to HAMS candidate Lalan Ram by more than 21,000 votes.In Kutumba, the final count told the story plainly. Lalan Ram secured 84,727 votes, defeating Rajesh Ram, who managed 63,202. The Congress state president’s defeat became emblematic of a wider collapse for the party across the state, where it won only six of the 61 seats it contested, its second-worst performance in Bihar since 2010. The mood inside the party quickly turned grim, with senior leaders rushing into emergency meetings in Delhi to understand what went wrong.While the Congress and its allies blamed the outcome on what they called a compromised election process, including the hurried Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, critics dismissed their concerns. Police burst international cybercrime racket that targeted Americans in the guise of Microsoft Technical Support personnel handling Federal Trade Commission. – BENGALURU: In what looks like a major syndicate of an international cybercrime network, a gang operating from the city targeted citizens in the USA and siphoned off money under the pretext of Microsoft Technical Support personnel handling the ‘Federal Trade Commission’. The gang was busted. However, cops are yet to discover the number of victims and the amount lost by them. Acting on a tip-off, police teams from the special cell of the Cyber Command, along with sleuths from the Cyber Crime Police Station, Whitefield division, raided the office premises of Musk Communications located on the 6th Floor, Delta Building, Sigma Soft Tech Park, Whitefield Main Road, near Varthur Kodi. They seized computers, hard disks, laptops, mobile phones, and other electronic gadgets. Additionally, 21 staffers working in the office were arrested. They were produced before a court on Saturday evening and were taken into police custody for questioning. Equipped with a search warrant from a court, the raids were carried out on Friday and Saturday.The firm Musk Communications rented a spacious 4,500 square feet office premises from this August, police investigations revealed. “We have to question the building owner on some points. Also, the rent for this office premises runs into several lakhs for sure,” an investigating officer said.A senior police officer explained their modus operandi to STOI and said, “The miscreants deployed malicious Facebook advertisements to freeze victims’ computers, falsely claimed data compromise, and extorted money under the guise of Federal Trade Commission (FTC) violations. They ran targeted Facebook advertisement campaigns aimed at United States-based users, embedding malicious code disguised as genuine service links or security alerts,” he said, adding that “When an unsuspecting user clicked on the advertisement, the code executed and locked the system. A pop-up message then appeared, falsely claiming to be from Microsoft Global Technical Support and displaying a fake helpline number. Once victims contacted the number, the fraudsters impersonated technical support executives. They misled victims by claiming their computers were hacked, their IP addresses were compromised, and that their banking credentials and personal data were at high risk. Under the pretext of resolving the alleged hacking and ‘FTC violations’, the fraudsters falsely claimed that the Federal Trade Commission was involved. They coerced victims into paying for security fixes, compliance procedures, or immediate risk mitigation, collecting large sums from them,” he said.Director General of Police-Cyber Command Unit, Bengaluru, Pronab Mohanty, said they suspect miscreants of duping the victims of hundreds of crores in the form of bitcoins. According to Mohanty, they acted on a concrete tip-off about the company and its illegal activities.“The raids were carried out for two days. During the operation, 21 employees, who were actively involved in cheating foreign nationals by posing as Microsoft support technicians, were secured and arrested. Police burst international cybercrime racket that targeted Americans in the guise of Microsoft Technical Support personnel handling Federal Trade Commission. – BENGALURU: In what looks like a major syndicate of an international cybercrime network, a gang operating from the city targeted citizens in the USA and siphoned off money under the pretext of Microsoft Technical Support personnel handling the ‘Federal Trade Commission’. The gang was busted. However, cops are yet to discover the number of victims and the amount lost by them. Acting on a tip-off, police teams from the special cell of the Cyber Command, along with sleuths from the Cyber Crime Police Station, Whitefield division, raided the office premises of Musk Communications located on the 6th Floor, Delta Building, Sigma Soft Tech Park, Whitefield Main Road, near Varthur Kodi. They seized computers, hard disks, laptops, mobile phones, and other electronic gadgets. Additionally, 21 staffers working in the office were arrested. They were produced before a court on Saturday evening and were taken into police custody for questioning. Equipped with a search warrant from a court, the raids were carried out on Friday and Saturday.The firm Musk Communications rented a spacious 4,500 square feet office premises from this August, police investigations revealed. “We have to question the building owner on some points. Also, the rent for this office premises runs into several lakhs for sure,” an investigating officer said.A senior police officer explained their modus operandi to STOI and said, “The miscreants deployed malicious Facebook advertisements to freeze victims’ computers, falsely claimed data compromise, and extorted money under the guise of Federal Trade Commission (FTC) violations. They ran targeted Facebook advertisement campaigns aimed at United States-based users, embedding malicious code disguised as genuine service links or security alerts,” he said, adding that “When an unsuspecting user clicked on the advertisement, the code executed and locked the system. A pop-up message then appeared, falsely claiming to be from Microsoft Global Technical Support and displaying a fake helpline number. Once victims contacted the number, the fraudsters impersonated technical support executives. They misled victims by claiming their computers were hacked, their IP addresses were compromised, and that their banking credentials and personal data were at high risk. Under the pretext of resolving the alleged hacking and ‘FTC violations’, the fraudsters falsely claimed that the Federal Trade Commission was involved. They coerced victims into paying for security fixes, compliance procedures, or immediate risk mitigation, collecting large sums from them,” he said.Director General of Police-Cyber Command Unit, Bengaluru, Pronab Mohanty, said they suspect miscreants of duping the victims of hundreds of crores in the form of bitcoins. According to Mohanty, they acted on a concrete tip-off about the company and its illegal activities.“The raids were carried out for two days. During the operation, 21 employees, who were actively involved in cheating foreign nationals by posing as Microsoft support technicians, were secured and arrested. Several computer systems, digital devices, mobile phones, and other electronic evidence used for committing the offence were seized. This shift was exactly what the BJP had been eyeing going into this election. Prashant Kishor during padyatra NEW DELHI: The strategist who had previously scripted victories for BJP and JD(U) scored a duck in his debut match in the Bihar elections. The chatter on the ground and even in the newsrooms around Jan Suraaj had never been this dismal until the exit polls capped the alliance at a maximum of 10 seats.People felt he made sense when he spoke about migration, education, jobs and jungle raj. But in the end, barring 2 exceptions, most of his candidates had their ‘zamaanat zabt’ in the Bihar Assembly elections — not too bad for a new entrant, but remarkably poor for a seasoned poll strategist.Prashant Kishor had left the JD(U) in 2020 and then moved to Bengal, where he led the Trinamool Congress to victory in 2021. After that, he announced a break from political consulting. In March 2022, Prashant brought together a team of his I-PAC colleagues to plan and execute a yatra across Bihar, one of the most extensive padyatras in recent history, unlike Rahul and Tejashwi’s yatras, largely led on vehicles.Both the government and the opposition were low-key, if not welcoming, about the attempt to make inroads into their backyard. They watched from the sidelines, with caution, until he launched his party about a year ago, in October 2024.The ‘B-team’?The opposition accused Jan Suraaj of being the BJP’s B-team and of splitting anti-NDA votes by fielding women and Muslim candidates, while BJP leaders like Sanjay Jaiswal alleged that the party was actually working for RJD chief Lalu Prasad.Prashant refuted both these claims, saying, “Both these parties, the RJD and the BJP, call us the B-team. But, in reality, Jan Suraaj is the people’s B-team.” He also categorically denied joining any pre or post-poll alliances every time he was questioned.At the outset, besides talking about issues, Prashant’s attack on his opposition had two major themes: attacking the RJD for jungle raj and its leader being a “9th fail”, and taking on Nitish Kumar’s health. As he had said, his main concerns were these two and not the BJP, which was at the centre.He, however, said that the party had given people the Mandir, not jobs, as people voted for the Mandir and nothing beyond that. As the election drew closer, he even levelled allegations against deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary, alleging that he is an accused in a 1995 murder case..A disruptorThe Bihar election results did more than just dislodge the RJD, which had been the single largest party in 2015 and 2020, and pushed Congress to its worst performance since 2010, with only three seats.They also reshaped the power balance within the NDA, lifting the BJP to a position where, for the first time, it clearly overshadowed its long-time ally, the JD(U). These two shifts were exactly what the BJP had been eyeing going into this election.PK’s vote share may be just 3.14 per cent with no seats to show, but Jan Suraaj still finished third in 115 constituencies, from West Champaran and Jhanjharpur to Nirmali, Triveniganj, Purnia, and more, effectively playing the role of a ‘vote katwa’. And with the BJP’s strong sweep, his votes ended up boosting the BJP’s tally, cutting into both the Mahagathbandhan and the JD(U).Not the endHow Jan Suraaj’s math went wrong is something for political pundits and PK himself to see. But finishing third on 115 seats is no small feat for a debutant outfit. It shows the party managed to carve out a noticeable presence, even if it couldn’t convert that into actual wins. For now, the party proved to be more of a disruptor than a challenger.Prashant has repeatedly said that he won’t back down. But in the end, barring 2 exceptions, most of his candidates had their ‘zamaanat zabt’ in the Bihar Assembly elections — not too bad for a new entrant, but remarkably poor for a seasoned poll strategist.Prashant Kishor had left the JD(U) in 2020 and then moved to Bengal, where he led the Trinamool Congress to victory in 2021. After that, he announced a break from political consulting. In March 2022, Prashant brought together a team of his I-PAC colleagues to plan and execute a yatra across Bihar, one of the most extensive padyatras in recent history, unlike Rahul and Tejashwi’s yatras, largely led on vehicles.Both the government and the opposition were low-key, if not welcoming, about the attempt to make inroads into their backyard. They watched from the sidelines, with caution, until he launched his party about a year ago, in October 2024.The ‘B-team’?The opposition accused Jan Suraaj of being the BJP’s B-team and of splitting anti-NDA votes by fielding women and Muslim candidates, while BJP leaders like Sanjay Jaiswal alleged that the party was actually working for RJD chief Lalu Prasad.Prashant refuted both these claims, saying, “Both these parties, the RJD and the BJP, call us the B-team. But, in reality, Jan Suraaj is the people’s B-team.” He also categorically denied joining any pre or post-poll alliances every time he was questioned.At the outset, besides talking about issues, Prashant’s attack on his opposition had two major themes: attacking the RJD for jungle raj and its leader being a “9th fail”, and taking on Nitish Kumar’s health. As he had said, his main concerns were these two and not the BJP, which was at the centre.He, however, said that the party had given people the Mandir, not jobs, as people voted for the Mandir and nothing beyond that. As the election drew closer, he even levelled allegations against deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary, alleging that he is an accused in a 1995 murder case..A disruptorThe Bihar election results did more than just dislodge the RJD, which had been the single largest party in 2015 and 2020, and pushed Congress to its worst performance since 2010, with only three seats.They also reshaped the power balance within the NDA, lifting the BJP to a position where, for the first time, it clearly overshadowed its long-time ally, the JD(U). These two shifts were exactly what the BJP had been eyeing going into this election.PK’s vote share may be just 3.14 per cent with no seats to show, but Jan Suraaj still finished third in 115 constituencies, from West Champaran and Jhanjharpur to Nirmali, Triveniganj, Purnia, and more, effectively playing the role of a ‘vote katwa’. And with the BJP’s strong sweep, his votes ended up boosting the BJP’s tally, cutting into both the Mahagathbandhan and the JD(U).Not the endHow Jan Suraaj’s math went wrong is something for political pundits and PK himself to see. But finishing third on 115 seats is no small feat for a debutant outfit. It shows the party managed to carve out a noticeable presence, even if it couldn’t convert that into actual wins. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a day after the NDA’s historic win in Bihar, launched a sharp attack on the Congress, saying dissatisfaction was spreading among senior nationalist leaders who had once worked closely with Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.Taking a veiled dig at Rahul Gandhi, Prime Minister said that their frustration stemmed from the conduct of what he called the party’s “namdar” leadership. He further accused the opposition of now turning its anger towards institutions instead of accepting the verdict.Addressing a gathering of Bihari residents in Surat, PM Modi said the Congress and its allies had turned to blaming institutions instead of introspecting. “Opposition can’t explain poll rout even to their workers and blaming EVMs, EC and electoral rolls’ revision,” he said, calling it part of a “habitual” attempt to discredit constitutional bodies. He also pointed to what he described as growing frustration among younger opposition MPs, saying, “When we meet young Congress members or INDIA alliance members in the Parliament, they say, ‘Sir, what can we do? Our careers are coming to an end. We don’t even get a chance to speak in Parliament because these people keep saying, ‘Lock Parliament,’ every time.’ They’re unable to answer their own constituencies…”Turning to Bihar, PM Modi praised the state’s voters for delivering a decisive mandate and setting what he described as a global example. NEW DELHI: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Saturday inducted 11,729 newly trained constable/GD recruits into its operational fold. This large-scale induction will result in a 8% growth in the overall operational strength of the Force, marking one of the most substantial expansions in recent years, CISF said in a statement.Elaborating on the new inductions, CISF revealed, they passed out from six regional training centres across the country — Barwaha (MP), Deoli & Behror (Rajasthan), Thakkolam (Tamil Nadu), Bhilai (Chattisgarh) and Mundali (Odisa). Of the 11,729 recruits, 1,896 are women personnel. Keeping in view operational priorities and existing vacancies, a majority of them are being posted to airports and DMRC units, where women play an essential role in security screening and passenger handling,” CISF said.“The strengthening comes soon after the ministry of home affairs approved the enhanced ceiling limit of 2.2 lakh personnel for the CISF, enabling the Force to meet rising national security responsibilities. Delhi Crime Branch has registered two FIRs against Al-Falah University for cheating and forgery, following serious irregularities flagged by UGC and NAAC. The university is also under scrutiny after three doctors from its medical faculty were arrested in connection with a terror module linked to banned outfits. Al-Falah University (ANI image) NEW DELHI: The Delhi Crime Branch on Saturday registered two FIRs against Al-Falah University over serious allegations of cheating and forgery. A team from the Delhi Crime Branch visited the university’s office in Okhla today. Delhi Police has also issued a notice to the institution, demanding a set of documents as part of their inquiry.The legal action follows serious irregularities flagged by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) during their assessments.According to police, the first FIR involves violations under Section 12 (cheating). The second FIR concerns alleged false accreditation claims made by the university.NAAC on Thursday has also served a show-cause notice to the Al-Falah School of Engineering and Technology, accusing it of claiming accreditation despite failing to complete the mandatory renewal process. The council stated that the university was last accredited in 2013 with a ‘B’ grade but did not submit required documents like the Self-Study Report even after repeated reminders. Delhi Crime Branch has registered two FIRs against Al-Falah University for cheating and forgery, following serious irregularities flagged by UGC and NAAC. A team from the Delhi Crime Branch visited the university’s office in Okhla today. Delhi Police has also issued a notice to the institution, demanding a set of documents as part of their inquiry.The legal action follows serious irregularities flagged by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) during their assessments.According to police, the first FIR involves violations under Section 12 (cheating). The second FIR concerns alleged false accreditation claims made by the university.NAAC on Thursday has also served a show-cause notice to the Al-Falah School of Engineering and Technology, accusing it of claiming accreditation despite failing to complete the mandatory renewal process. The council stated that the university was last accredited in 2013 with a ‘B’ grade but did not submit required documents like the Self-Study Report even after repeated reminders. Despite Lalu Prasad Yadav’s physical absence from the Bihar election campaign, his legacy profoundly shaped the results. The NDA successfully leveraged the ‘jungle raj’ narrative, resonating with voters seeking stability. While the RJD retained its core support, its broader appeal diminished, highlighting the enduring, albeit complex, influence of Lalu’s historical impact on Bihar’s political landscape. NEW DELHI: This election season in Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav did not appear at rallies, did not deliver a single speech, and did not record even a short video for supporters. His party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), delivered one of its weakest performances in decades, winning only about two dozen seats. And yet the results, the campaign rhetoric, and even voter anxieties seemed to orbit around one man who never entered the arena.Lalu’s absence this year may have defined the election as much as his presence once did.The NDA’s sweeping victory, 202 seats between the BJP, JD(U) and allies, was built on a familiar message architecture that repeatedly invoked the spectre of jungle raj. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his victory speech on Friday, Bihar had rejected “jungle raj” and “katta sarkaar,” choosing development and stability instead.What ‘jungle raj’ means todayFor decades, the term carried clear caste-coded undertones. Today, its meaning has broadened. Uday Chandra, writer and field-based researcher of politics and society, notes that “jungle raj functions today less as a narrow upper-caste smear than as a broad anxiety about disorder that cuts across caste lines.” That evolution shaped how women, Extremely Backward Classes, Mahadalits and non-Yadav OBCs understood the stakes of their vote.These groups, Chandra says, “prioritise predictability, personal safety and routine welfare over expressive grievance politics.” Any party that appeared vulnerable to instability began the campaign with a trust deficit. RJD entered the fray knowing it had to battle not only the NDA, but also a historical memory that no longer targeted only upper castes but resonated across the electorate.The party’s messaging, as a result, was pushed into a defensive crouch. “It forces RJD to defend its reputation continuously rather than focusing solely on policy promises,” Chandra explains. “Much of its messaging becomes defensive, explaining, denying, contextualising, which is poor terrain when the median voter wants reassurance, not argument.”The electoral map reflected this tension. Though the RJD won only 25 seats, it recorded the highest vote share, 23%, proving its strongholds of Yadav-Muslim loyalty remain intact. But its reach in competitive seats shrank further. As Chandra puts it, “RJD’s core still turns out strongly but in marginal constituencies the fear-of-disorder payoff favours the side that can credibly promise stability.””Lalu remains the master symbol of Yadav pride and political memory,” Chandra says. Symbolism, however, is not the same as vote transfer.Internal fragmentation aggravated these shifts. Chandra notes that the Yadav vote “can be split when local notables run their own machines or when personal rivalries are visible.” In several constituencies, Tej Pratap Yadav’s parallel activity and the presence of strong independents splintered the Yadav vote. These splits did not hurt the RJD in strongholds — but proved lethal in front-line marginals.The father, the sons & the burdenTejashwi campaigned in his father’s name.Tej Pratap campaigned in his father’s shadow.Both carried pieces of the Lalu myth – neither carried it all.For many RJD supporters, Tejashwi is the softer, modern face meant to reassure voters uneasy about a return to chaos. For critics, he remains Lalu’s political heir and therefore the inheritor of jungle raj. He ends up fighting two battles simultaneously: his father’s past and his coalition’s present. And in 2025, he lost both.Why Lalu still dominates the political imaginationLalu’s relevance is not sustained by nostalgia alone. The infrastructure he built still shapes Bihar’s politics. Chandra points to three drivers of his enduring centrality: “historical anchoring, identity brokerage, and a relational patronage network.”His tenure in the 1990s reshaped Bihar’s caste politics in ways that even his opponents acknowledge. His presence still influences alliances, candidate selection and the strategies of regional players. And the organisational networks he built, cadres, kinship links, local intermediaries, continue to be activated during elections.This duality explains why Lalu remained the focal point despite the RJD’s weak performance. Opponents framed their campaign around his record; allies used his legacy as political glue. The Mahagathbandhan campaigned with Lalu’s symbolism while trying to present a forward-looking message. Voters judged both through the prism of his legacy.The verdict reveals the limits of symbolic politics. The NDA tapped into a broad desire for stability and continuity. Nitish Kumar’s credentials as Sushasan Babu, combined with Modi’s welfare-driven appeal, proved more persuasive than the RJD’s defensive messaging.The RJD struggled to convincingly present itself as a clean break from the 1990s. Tejashwi’s blended pitch, social justice plus governance, was often overshadowed by ambiguity. Was he an inheritor or a reformer? Voters were unsure.Lalu absent, yet unavoidableThe 2025 election may be one of the harshest electoral blows to the RJD, but it also reaffirms something deeper: Lalu Yadav continues to frame the boundaries of how politics is imagined, narrated and contested in Bihar. Every debate about governance, justice, development or security remains tethered to reactions to his legacy.His absence became a presence.This year, Lalu did not campaign, did not speak, did not even wave from a balcony. Yet no NDA rally avoided attacking his past; no MGB rally could afford to ignore his symbolism. He was not on the ballot but still shaped the ballot box.The verdict has sidelined his party, but it has not erased him. Despite Lalu Prasad Yadav’s physical absence from the Bihar election campaign, his legacy profoundly shaped the results. The NDA successfully leveraged the ‘jungle raj’ narrative, resonating with voters seeking stability. While the RJD retained its core support, its broader appeal diminished, highlighting the enduring, albeit complex, influence of Lalu’s historical impact on Bihar’s political landscape. NEW DELHI: This election season in Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav did not appear at rallies, did not deliver a single speech, and did not record even a short video for supporters. His party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), delivered one of its weakest performances in decades, winning only about two dozen seats. And yet the results, the campaign rhetoric, and even voter anxieties seemed to orbit around one man who never entered the arena.Lalu’s absence this year may have defined the election as much as his presence once did.The NDA’s sweeping victory, 202 seats between the BJP, JD(U) and allies, was built on a familiar message architecture that repeatedly invoked the spectre of jungle raj. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his victory speech on Friday, Bihar had rejected “jungle raj” and “katta sarkaar,” choosing development and stability instead.What ‘jungle raj’ means todayFor decades, the term carried clear caste-coded undertones. Today, its meaning has broadened. Uday Chandra, writer and field-based researcher of politics and society, notes that “jungle raj functions today less as a narrow upper-caste smear than as a broad anxiety about disorder that cuts across caste lines.” That evolution shaped how women, Extremely Backward Classes, Mahadalits and non-Yadav OBCs understood the stakes of their vote.These groups, Chandra says, “prioritise predictability, personal safety and routine welfare over expressive grievance politics.” Any party that appeared vulnerable to instability began the campaign with a trust deficit. RJD entered the fray knowing it had to battle not only the NDA, but also a historical memory that no longer targeted only upper castes but resonated across the electorate.The party’s messaging, as a result, was pushed into a defensive crouch. “It forces RJD to defend its reputation continuously rather than focusing solely on policy promises,” Chandra explains. “Much of its messaging becomes defensive, explaining, denying, contextualising, which is poor terrain when the median voter wants reassurance, not argument.”The electoral map reflected this tension. Though the RJD won only 25 seats, it recorded the highest vote share, 23%, proving its strongholds of Yadav-Muslim loyalty remain intact. But its reach in competitive seats shrank further. As Chandra puts it, “RJD’s core still turns out strongly but in marginal constituencies the fear-of-disorder payoff favours the side that can credibly promise stability.””Lalu remains the master symbol of Yadav pride and political memory,” Chandra says. Symbolism, however, is not the same as vote transfer.Internal fragmentation aggravated these shifts. Chandra notes that the Yadav vote “can be split when local notables run their own machines or when personal rivalries are visible.” In several constituencies, Tej Pratap Yadav’s parallel activity and the presence of strong independents splintered the Yadav vote. These splits did not hurt the RJD in strongholds — but proved lethal in front-line marginals.The father, the sons & the burdenTejashwi campaigned in his father’s name.Tej Pratap campaigned in his father’s shadow.Both carried pieces of the Lalu myth – neither carried it all.For many RJD supporters, Tejashwi is the softer, modern face meant to reassure voters uneasy about a return to chaos. For critics, he remains Lalu’s political heir and therefore the inheritor of jungle raj. He ends up fighting two battles simultaneously: his father’s past and his coalition’s present. And in 2025, he lost both.Why Lalu still dominates the political imaginationLalu’s relevance is not sustained by nostalgia alone. The infrastructure he built still shapes Bihar’s politics. Chandra points to three drivers of his enduring centrality: “historical anchoring, identity brokerage, and a relational patronage network.”His tenure in the 1990s reshaped Bihar’s caste politics in ways that even his opponents acknowledge. His presence still influences alliances, candidate selection and the strategies of regional players. And the organisational networks he built, cadres, kinship links, local intermediaries, continue to be activated during elections.This duality explains why Lalu remained the focal point despite the RJD’s weak performance. Opponents framed their campaign around his record; allies used his legacy as political glue. The Mahagathbandhan campaigned with Lalu’s symbolism while trying to present a forward-looking message. Voters judged both through the prism of his legacy.The verdict reveals the limits of symbolic politics. The NDA tapped into a broad desire for stability and continuity. Nitish Kumar’s credentials as Sushasan Babu, combined with Modi’s welfare-driven appeal, proved more persuasive than the RJD’s defensive messaging.The RJD struggled to convincingly present itself as a clean break from the 1990s. Tejashwi’s blended pitch, social justice plus governance, was often overshadowed by ambiguity. Was he an inheritor or a reformer? Voters were unsure.Lalu absent, yet unavoidableThe 2025 election may be one of the harshest electoral blows to the RJD, but it also reaffirms something deeper: Lalu Yadav continues to frame the boundaries of how politics is imagined, narrated and contested in Bihar. Every debate about governance, justice, development or security remains tethered to reactions to his legacy.His absence became a presence.This year, Lalu did not campaign, did not speak, did not even wave from a balcony. Yet no NDA rally avoided attacking his past; no MGB rally could afford to ignore his symbolism. He was not on the ballot but still shaped the ballot box.The verdict has sidelined his party, but it has not erased him. Chirag Paswan (ANI image) NEW DELHI: Union minister and LJP(RV) chief Chirag Paswan on Saturday strongly criticised what he described as a “false narrative” created during the Bihar Assembly elections about differences between his party and chief minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U).A day after the NDA registered a landslide victory with 202 seats in the 243-member House, Paswan said several exit polls failed to show LJP(RV) in double digits but his party’s performance proved those predictions wrong.‘Full Stop to Many Questions’ Chirag Paswan Hails PM Modi, Nitish as NDA Soars Past 200 Seats“You had analysed this (seat allocation) on your channels… The mindset behind that analysis was that Chirag Paswan has been given those seats to lose,” he said in Patna.”During Bihar poll campaign, a false narrative was created that there were differences between JD(U), LJP(RV),” Paswan said as reported by news agency PTI. “Throughout the elections, attempts were made to set a narrative that there are cracks between JD(U) and LJP(RV). Most of the exit polls did not show us even in double digits. I didn’t contest on the basis of surveys, but on the basis of my hard work,” he added. Paswan also stated that some political commentators linked his 2020 stance against JD(U) with the seats given to his party this time. “A few of my ‘well-wishers’ started building a narrative that JD(U) played the same game with me in 2025. But the results speak for themselves,” he added.Earlier, Paswan met Nitish Kumar in Patna and congratulated him personally on the NDA’s win. He praised the chief minister for leading the campaign with determination despite heavy criticism from the Opposition.“When the so-called youth leaders of Bihar remained in their rooms because of inclement weather and gave speeches on their phones, my CM was going out for campaigning. He showed his capability,” LJP(RV) chief said.He added that Bihar’s voters never accept crude political language and stood firmly with the NDA.“Opposition tried to build false narratives, made personal comments on my PM but it made our alliance even stronger. Bihar and Biharis are known for dignity, for their culture. Biharis have never accepted such crude language,” he said.Paswan shared that the meeting with Nitish Kumar was “cordial and constructive”. He also stressed out that the NDA partners are united to fulfil people’s aspirations.“I conveyed my warm wishes to Nitish Kumar ji and expressed confidence that under his leadership, the NDA government will continue to deliver on its promises,” he said.The LJP(RV) chief also criticised the Opposition for blaming EVMs and officials after the results.“If they spent as much time on their own assessment as they do on finding fault, then Congress and RJD would achieve something better. No Bihari tolerates personal comments that go below limits,” he said.The NDA crossed the 200-seat mark for the second time in Bihar’s electoral history. BJP won 89 seats, JD(U) 85, LJP(RV) 19, HAMS 5, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha secured 4 seats.The Mahagathbandhan, including RJD and Congress, secured only 35 seats in total. AAP’s padyatra enters Day 3 in UP The Aam Aadmi Party’s ‘Rojgaar Do – Samajik Nyay Do’ padyatra continued its outreach efforts as the foot march entered its third day on Friday, moving from Bikapur in Ayodhya to Kurebhar in Sultanpur.The march, led by AAP UP in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, passed through Khajurahat, where residents gathered along the route.Addressing the participants, Singh said that the padyatra aims to draw attention to unemployment and issues concerning Dalits, backward groups and other communities.
