NEW DELHI: Congress’s abysmal show threatens to again trap the party in the rut that it has been trying to climb out of since 2014 – an endless cycle of recriminations, dissent and defections, and whispered demands for change of personnel and strategy.Coming against the backdrop of shocking losses in Haryana and Maharashtra, this setback will only harden the belief among party functionaries that the future remains bleak, a concern that had triggered an exodus of popular faces between 2014 and 2023. There is now a serious worry the defeat will revive public airing of grievances from restive souls within, a strong possibility given that many have been upset with the party’s focus in recent months. A couple of popular faces are even said to be waiting for their opportunity. An ominous warning came from an unlikely corner. Mumtaz Patel, daughter of the late Ahmed Patel, posted on X: “It’s time to look within and accept reality. Till when will countless loyal ground workers who have stayed with the party through thick and thin wait to see success… it’s failure after failure due to power concentrated in the hands of a few who are totally disconnected with ground reality… these same people will be rewarded again and again because they have made themselves indispensable with their control and power.”MP Shashi Tharoor minced no words either: “I have been talking to people…our party leaders must do some very serious analysis of where things went wrong … how our organisation functions.” Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh said “elections are about intensive public contact at booth level” while Karnataka state chief and deputy CM DK Shivakumar advocated the need to work out a new strategy. After the high of the 2024 Lok Sabha contest where it emerged with its dignity intact despite an uphill battle, Congress has been on an uninterrupted decline, losing Haryana and Maharashtra, states it was expected to win, and finishing with a pathetic tally in J&K. Bihar is yet more proof that Congress has lost its way electorally. In a typical paradox that plagues Congress, the party was a fringe player in Bihar, but its national appeal as embodiment of anti-BJP politics provided the base from which local powerhouse RJD was to fire. But even as a side player, it could not fulfil its promise of being a strong supporting ally (like it did in Jharkhand last year). This time, its tally was in single digits, even lower than the 19 seats it won out of the 71 contested in 2020. NEW DELHI: It may be the first time in three decades that RJD doesn’t have a single member in Rajya Sabha when the next Bihar assembly elections come around in 2030.The party now has five members in the upper house, but it will gradually lose these seats even if a non-NDA party – like AIMIM with five MLAs in the new Bihar assembly – supports it in Rajya Sabha elections in 2026 and 2028.In 2030, RJD may retain one of its seats if it gets AIMIM support. But it appears a distant possibility as smaller parties invariably go by the politics of the day and their own interests.Out of five RJD members in Rajya Sabha, two – Prem Chand Gupta, the party’s leader in the House, and A D Singh – will retire in April 2026. The third one, Faiyaz Ahmad, will retire in July 2028; and the remaining two, Manoj Kumar Jha and Sanjay Yadav, will complete their term in April 2030.In 2026, elections will be held for five vacancies, including two from JDU and another from Rashtriya Lok Morcha (both NDA allies). The strength of the new assembly will help NDA gain all five seats from Bihar next year.Similarly, five members – three from BJP, and one each from JDU and RJD – will retire in 2028. With the elections over, Bihar’s finance department will have to pull out the spreadsheets to redo the fiscal arithmetic as the govt will have to raise resources to not just meet the big promises made in the NDA manifesto, including more money to the 74 lakh farmers, SC students and others in the state, but also to fund capital expenditure (capex) to build two greenfield cities (New Patna and Sitapuram) and create farm infrastructure.In a state with an estimated fiscal deficit of 9.2% of gross state domestic product (GSDP) last year and own-tax revenue budgeted at 5.3% of state GDP this year, there is chatter of a review of prohibition imposed by Nitish Kumar in 2016. Getting the NDA to reverse the ban may not be easy as it has a lot of appeal with women voters who are pro-prohibition.But there is a large revenue potential since the state govt was earning over Rs 3,000 crore annually from alcohol sales in 2015-16 – more than enough to cover the Rs 2,200 crore needed for additional direct transfer to farmers. At current prices, the mop-up will only be higher.In any case, the pre-poll announcement of Rs 10,000 for the currently enrolled 1.5 crore women under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana will cost Rs 15,000 crore. Besides, an increase in the monthly pension to Rs 1,100 for 1.1 crore elders, widows and disabled will result in an additional outgo of around Rs 8,500 crore with nearly Rs 4,000 crore likely to be provided for free electricity of up to 125 units.The bill will go beyond the additional Rs 28,000-crore outgo due to the schemes already implemented. (Photo: PTI) PATNA: National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a stunning landslide in Bihar, with the governing coalition headed by chief minister Nitish Kumar bagging 202 of 243 assembly seats in a hugely one-sided outcome that underscores the JDU boss’s political resilience despite two decades in office, and PM Narendra Modi’s sway over voters, while deflating the Grand Alliance’s Rahul Gandhi-led campaign against “vote theft”.The overwhelming victory puts BJP on a firm footing ahead of approaching encounters, especially in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.The outcome, which surpassed NDA’s own expectations, is seen as a pro-incumbency vote conveying gratitude to Nitish Kumar, who put the state back on track after a widely perceived 15 years of anarchy, and marks a “coming of age” moment for women voters who turned out in huge numbers to reciprocate Nitish-led NDA govt’s measures to empower them using a whole spectrum of means. It also speaks to the success of a strategy to overpower the numerically robust Muslim-Yadav combination with a broader tent covering “most backward classes”, “non-Yadav backwards”, extremely backward classes, and significant sections of Dalits.It was the first time that women – including possibly those from the Yadav community – in a supposedly “socially backward” state made themselves felt as an independent electoral category. The landslide should potentially put Nitish Kumar on the way to becoming one of India’s longest-serving CMs. Encouraged by largest party status, many in BJP may ask it to claim Bihar CM’s chair Bihar voters disregarded concerns about CM Nitish Kumar’s health and past political flip-flops to vote overwhelmingly for him. JDU’s score of 85, which would have looked improbable after the underwhelming 43 it managed five years ago, was facilitated also by perfect coordination with BJP.Nitish Does It Again: Alliance Back With Landmark 202 SeatsBJP, fuelled by Modi’s popularity in the state, has for the first time emerged as the single largest party in the state, an achievement that may encourage many in the party to stake claim to the chief ministership. BJP was also the glue for the coalition.Other members of the NDA alliance – Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party, Union minister Jitanram Manjhi’s HAM and Upendra Kushwaha’s RLM – contributed to the thumping win with spectacular strike rates.In contrast, the rival RJD-led Mahagathbandhan fared poorly. The Tejashwi-led RJD barely escaped the political ignominy of slumping below its poorest score of 22, which it had crashed to in 2010. Congress, in keeping with what has become a pattern, again fared disastrously, plumbing to an embarrassing single-digit score of 6. CPI-ML’s streak of successes since 2020 also came to a halt, with the leftist formation winning 2.Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM has secured 5 seats, but the significance of its success stretches beyond the numbers in that it reflects a yearning among Muslims to diversity options beyond “secular” options led by non-Muslims.The coronation of Tejashwi, a CM-in-waiting for five years now, has been further delayed. He now must contend with the risk of BJP making overtures to Yadavs, with RJD having been out of govt for almost 20 years now. Nitish has never dropped his attempt to claim the Muslim vote and may redouble his efforts.In terms of national politics, the Gandhi-led Congress is the bigger loser, with his “vote theft” claim not getting any traction with Bihar voters. Congress responded to the shock by sticking to its guns. (Photo: PTI) PATNA: National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a stunning landslide in Bihar, with the governing coalition headed by chief minister Nitish Kumar bagging 202 of 243 assembly seats in a hugely one-sided outcome that underscores the JDU boss’s political resilience despite two decades in office, and PM Narendra Modi’s sway over voters, while deflating the Grand Alliance’s Rahul Gandhi-led campaign against “vote theft”.The overwhelming victory puts BJP on a firm footing ahead of approaching encounters, especially in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.The outcome, which surpassed NDA’s own expectations, is seen as a pro-incumbency vote conveying gratitude to Nitish Kumar, who put the state back on track after a widely perceived 15 years of anarchy, and marks a “coming of age” moment for women voters who turned out in huge numbers to reciprocate Nitish-led NDA govt’s measures to empower them using a whole spectrum of means. It also speaks to the success of a strategy to overpower the numerically robust Muslim-Yadav combination with a broader tent covering “most backward classes”, “non-Yadav backwards”, extremely backward classes, and significant sections of Dalits.It was the first time that women – including possibly those from the Yadav community – in a supposedly “socially backward” state made themselves felt as an independent electoral category. The landslide should potentially put Nitish Kumar on the way to becoming one of India’s longest-serving CMs. Encouraged by largest party status, many in BJP may ask it to claim Bihar CM’s chair Bihar voters disregarded concerns about CM Nitish Kumar’s health and past political flip-flops to vote overwhelmingly for him. JDU’s score of 85, which would have looked improbable after the underwhelming 43 it managed five years ago, was facilitated also by perfect coordination with BJP.Nitish Does It Again: Alliance Back With Landmark 202 SeatsBJP, fuelled by Modi’s popularity in the state, has for the first time emerged as the single largest party in the state, an achievement that may encourage many in the party to stake claim to the chief ministership. BJP was also the glue for the coalition.Other members of the NDA alliance – Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party, Union minister Jitanram Manjhi’s HAM and Upendra Kushwaha’s RLM – contributed to the thumping win with spectacular strike rates.In contrast, the rival RJD-led Mahagathbandhan fared poorly. The Tejashwi-led RJD barely escaped the political ignominy of slumping below its poorest score of 22, which it had crashed to in 2010. Congress, in keeping with what has become a pattern, again fared disastrously, plumbing to an embarrassing single-digit score of 6. CPI-ML’s streak of successes since 2020 also came to a halt, with the leftist formation winning 2.Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM has secured 5 seats, but the significance of its success stretches beyond the numbers in that it reflects a yearning among Muslims to diversity options beyond “secular” options led by non-Muslims.The coronation of Tejashwi, a CM-in-waiting for five years now, has been further delayed. He now must contend with the risk of BJP making overtures to Yadavs, with RJD having been out of govt for almost 20 years now. Nitish has never dropped his attempt to claim the Muslim vote and may redouble his efforts.In terms of national politics, the Gandhi-led Congress is the bigger loser, with his “vote theft” claim not getting any traction with Bihar voters. Congress responded to the shock by sticking to its guns. Bihar’s Mahagathbandhan has dissolved, with its constituent parties struggling individually. The Left parties, which delivered 16 seats in 2020, have seen a significant decline, winning less than ten seats collectively this time. This electoral setback raises questions about the future direction of the Left in Indian politics. Representational Image NEW DELHI: The Mahagathbandhan stands dismantled in Bihar — and its constituent parties have fared no better on their own. While the two larger players, the RJD in Bihar and the Congress at the national level, will regroup and continue the fight, the real setback has been for the three Left parties.In 2020, they delivered an impressive 16 seats to the alliance’s tally of 110. This time, however, they could not even reach double digits collectively. The scale of this decline raises a deeper question: where does the Left go from here?The declineFive years ago, it was the Congress that denied RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav a shot at the chief minister’s post. While the grand old party won 19 of the 70 seats it contested, the Left parties performed far better, fielding 29 candidates and winning 16.The CPI(ML) Liberation had delivered the strongest showing, with 12 wins from 19 seats — a strike rate of 63 per cent. The CPI and CPI(M) added two seats each, contesting six and four constituencies, respectively.This time, however, the picture is starkly different. With counting in its final stages, the CPI(ML) Liberation has won only two seats and the CPI(M) just one — neither is leading anywhere else. The CPI, meanwhile, has been wiped out entirely.The drop in vote share, however, is marginal. The Left front has slipped only slightly — from 4.64 per cent in 2020 to 4.18 per cent this time (with counting still underway).What went wrong?The election effectively became a referendum on the 20-year tenure of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar — and the JD(U) chief passed with flying colours. Powered significantly by his core support base of women voters — whose turnout across both phases was nearly nine percentage points higher than that of men — the NDA delivered a performance reminiscent of its sweeping 2010 victory.The Mahagathbandhan’s collapse was also fuelled by its own disunity. With each constituent staking claims to a larger share of seats, the alliance never finalised a formal seat-sharing pact. The CPI(M) and CPI together sought 35 seats — 24 and 11, respectively — six more than what the three Left parties had contested collectively in 2020. Ultimately, the Left fielded 33 candidates: 20 from CPI(ML) Liberation, nine from CPI and four from CPI(M).Despite fighting under a common banner and projecting Tejashwi Yadav as their chief ministerial face, the partners never achieved real coherence on the ground — and each paid the price.What next for Left?Having already lost its traditional strongholds of West Bengal (2011) and Tripura (2018) — states it had governed for decades — the Left Front now remains in power only in Kerala. Bihar’s Mahagathbandhan has dissolved, with its constituent parties struggling individually. The Left parties, which delivered 16 seats in 2020, have seen a significant decline, winning less than ten seats collectively this time. This electoral setback raises questions about the future direction of the Left in Indian politics. Representational Image NEW DELHI: The Mahagathbandhan stands dismantled in Bihar — and its constituent parties have fared no better on their own. While the two larger players, the RJD in Bihar and the Congress at the national level, will regroup and continue the fight, the real setback has been for the three Left parties.In 2020, they delivered an impressive 16 seats to the alliance’s tally of 110. This time, however, they could not even reach double digits collectively. The scale of this decline raises a deeper question: where does the Left go from here?The declineFive years ago, it was the Congress that denied RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav a shot at the chief minister’s post. While the grand old party won 19 of the 70 seats it contested, the Left parties performed far better, fielding 29 candidates and winning 16.The CPI(ML) Liberation had delivered the strongest showing, with 12 wins from 19 seats — a strike rate of 63 per cent. The CPI and CPI(M) added two seats each, contesting six and four constituencies, respectively.This time, however, the picture is starkly different. With counting in its final stages, the CPI(ML) Liberation has won only two seats and the CPI(M) just one — neither is leading anywhere else. The CPI, meanwhile, has been wiped out entirely.The drop in vote share, however, is marginal. The Left front has slipped only slightly — from 4.64 per cent in 2020 to 4.18 per cent this time (with counting still underway).What went wrong?The election effectively became a referendum on the 20-year tenure of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar — and the JD(U) chief passed with flying colours. Powered significantly by his core support base of women voters — whose turnout across both phases was nearly nine percentage points higher than that of men — the NDA delivered a performance reminiscent of its sweeping 2010 victory.The Mahagathbandhan’s collapse was also fuelled by its own disunity. With each constituent staking claims to a larger share of seats, the alliance never finalised a formal seat-sharing pact. The CPI(M) and CPI together sought 35 seats — 24 and 11, respectively — six more than what the three Left parties had contested collectively in 2020. Ultimately, the Left fielded 33 candidates: 20 from CPI(ML) Liberation, nine from CPI and four from CPI(M).Despite fighting under a common banner and projecting Tejashwi Yadav as their chief ministerial face, the partners never achieved real coherence on the ground — and each paid the price.What next for Left?Having already lost its traditional strongholds of West Bengal (2011) and Tripura (2018) — states it had governed for decades — the Left Front now remains in power only in Kerala. We could not secure victory in an election that was unfair from the very outset. This battle is for the protection of the Constitution and democracy. The Congress Party and the INDIA alliance will thoroughly review this outcome and make their efforts to save democracy even more effective.”His remarks came as the NDA surged to a historic victory, securing over 200 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan registered just 33. The Congress won only six of the 61 seats it contested, prompting sharp internal and public reactions from party leaders. Following a surprising 2024 Lok Sabha setback, the BJP has demonstrated a remarkable electoral resurgence. Winning key state elections in Haryana, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Bihar, the party has effectively countered the narrative of diminished ‘Modi-magic’. This rebound is attributed to renewed organizational strength, strategic social engineering, and addressing local grievances, positioning 2024 as a mere aberration. Flashback: On June 4, 2024, as the results started trickling in, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was in shock. The party had set the ambitious “400 paar” target for itself in the Lok Sabha elections. However, the party failed to get a majority on its own for the first time since 2014.The scale of the setback raised a fundamental question – was the “Modi‑magic” past its peak? After all, in an electoral career of 22 years, for the first time, PM Modi didn’t have a clear majority.Cut to today: BJP wins Bihar and becomes the single largest party in the state. Within a few months of 2024 elections, BJP flipped the script, giving a masterclass on how to win elections. In the key state elections in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Delhi and now Bihar, the BJP-led NDA has won four states. With 4 out of 6 wins, the party has shown that the 2024 Lok Sabha was merely a one‑off aberration.What went wrong in 2024The BJP’s 2024 setback stemmed largely from internal drift and an unexpected rift with the RSS. JP Nadda’s remark that “the BJP runs itself” unsettled the Sangh and led to reduced booth-level mobilisation, weakening the party’s traditional grassroots strength. This disconnect was compounded by a sense of complacency after years of dominance. BJP’s internal assesments suggested eroded last-mile outreach, softer booth activity, and an overreliance on centralised leadership-centric messaging. Pollsters amplified this miscalibration by projecting an inflated performance, leading to misallocated resources and an underestimation of local grievances among communities such as non-Yadav OBCs, Brahmins, and SC/EBC groups.The quick reboundHaryana: Sweep, stumble, resurgeThe first big test for BJP after the 2024 setback was the Haryana state assembly elections. Facing a steep 10-year anti-incumbency against Manohar Khattar, the saffron party changed its CM just before the polls and brought in Nayab Saini. The party wooed women voters by launching ‘Lado Lakshmi Yojana’. A few months later, in October, as the final test started, BJP registered an impressive win. Where a revival for Congress was expected, BJP secured 48 of 90 seats, with 39.94 per cent vote share versus Congress’s 39.09 per cent.Maharashtra: Collapse and rebound In Lok Sabha polls after UP, if BJP suffered its biggest loss in any state, it was in Maharashtra. In 2019, the BJP‑led alliance had secured 41 of 48 seats (BJP 23). By 2024, the tally plunged – BJP got only about 9 seats, the NDA just 17. But the November state polls brought a sharp reversal. The BJP‑led Mahayuti won 235 of 288 seats, making the alliance more dominant than ever before. The BJP alone won 132, securing 26.78 per cent vote share, its best-ever performance in the state. Analysts attributed the turnaround to a large‑scale revival of booth‑level work, re‑engagement of the RSS structure, and targeted messaging addressing coalition dynamics and local issues. Eknath Shinde’s ‘Ladki Behin Yojana’ once again played a big role.Delhi: A victory 27 years in waiting Soon after Maharashtra, it was the turn of Delhi where BJP had been in exile for 27 years. But BJP managed to win 47 of 70 seats, ending the decade‑long rule of the Aam Aadmi Party. After the 2024 Lok Sabha setback, winning a major urban contest became essential for signalling broader bounce‑back and BJP delivered it in Delhi.Bihar – The ‘garda uda dia’ victoryIn all the state elections that followed 2024 elections, Bihar was the most testing, as BJP allied with Nitish Kumar who himself was fighting anti-incumbency of 20 years and voter fatigue. On the other hand, Tejashwi, who had managed to lead RJD as the single largest party the last time in 2020, was named the CM candidate of the Mahagathbandhan. The opposition led the charge while making “vote-theft” and SIR the main attack points against the ruling coalition. But on Friday the NDA recorded its second-best in Bihar with 206 seats. BJP itself almost bested its best performance in the state with 90 seats against 91 from 2010.How did BJP do it?BJP has mastered the art of deflecting the built-up anti-incumbency against being years in governance, to scratching the social hegemonic memories and using it as a launch pad for presenting themselves as an alternative to it.In Haryana they did it by reminding the masses about the Jaat dominance, and consolidating the non-jaat votes, creating a counter polarisation against the very deeply rooted jaat politics of the state and backed it up by giving a Punjabi Khatri and then an OBC CM.Maharashtra was no different, where despite having a strong Maratha face in incumbent CM Eknath Shinde, BJP played on anti-Maratha plank, creating a wider caste coalition, at a time when Manoj Jarange Patil’s demand for Maratha reservation had a huge resonance in Maratha region of the state. The BJP-led Mahayuti won 37 of the region’s 46 seats.In Bihar, BJP/NDA made concerted efforts to bring back the memories of “jungle raj” that worked effectively.The biggest strength of the party has been its organisational skills and ground workers who effectively mobilise the voters. PM Modi’s personal guarantees and the idea of a “double-engine” government have also worked in favour of BJP.With Bihar giving an astonishing victory to BJP, the party has yet another state in its kitty. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his victory speech to the BJP workers, has already set the next agenda- 2026 Bengal polls. Flashback: On June 4, 2024, as the results started trickling in, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was in shock. The party had set the ambitious “400 paar” target for itself in the Lok Sabha elections. However, the party failed to get a majority on its own for the first time since 2014.The scale of the setback raised a fundamental question – was the “Modi‑magic” past its peak? After all, in an electoral career of 22 years, for the first time, PM Modi didn’t have a clear majority.Cut to today: BJP wins Bihar and becomes the single largest party in the state. Within a few months of 2024 elections, BJP flipped the script, giving a masterclass on how to win elections. In the key state elections in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Delhi and now Bihar, the BJP-led NDA has won four states. With 4 out of 6 wins, the party has shown that the 2024 Lok Sabha was merely a one‑off aberration.What went wrong in 2024The BJP’s 2024 setback stemmed largely from internal drift and an unexpected rift with the RSS. JP Nadda’s remark that “the BJP runs itself” unsettled the Sangh and led to reduced booth-level mobilisation, weakening the party’s traditional grassroots strength. This disconnect was compounded by a sense of complacency after years of dominance. BJP’s internal assesments suggested eroded last-mile outreach, softer booth activity, and an overreliance on centralised leadership-centric messaging. Pollsters amplified this miscalibration by projecting an inflated performance, leading to misallocated resources and an underestimation of local grievances among communities such as non-Yadav OBCs, Brahmins, and SC/EBC groups.The quick reboundHaryana: Sweep, stumble, resurgeThe first big test for BJP after the 2024 setback was the Haryana state assembly elections. Facing a steep 10-year anti-incumbency against Manohar Khattar, the saffron party changed its CM just before the polls and brought in Nayab Saini. The party wooed women voters by launching ‘Lado Lakshmi Yojana’. A few months later, in October, as the final test started, BJP registered an impressive win. Where a revival for Congress was expected, BJP secured 48 of 90 seats, with 39.94 per cent vote share versus Congress’s 39.09 per cent.Maharashtra: Collapse and rebound In Lok Sabha polls after UP, if BJP suffered its biggest loss in any state, it was in Maharashtra. In 2019, the BJP‑led alliance had secured 41 of 48 seats (BJP 23). By 2024, the tally plunged – BJP got only about 9 seats, the NDA just 17. But the November state polls brought a sharp reversal. The BJP‑led Mahayuti won 235 of 288 seats, making the alliance more dominant than ever before. The BJP alone won 132, securing 26.78 per cent vote share, its best-ever performance in the state. Analysts attributed the turnaround to a large‑scale revival of booth‑level work, re‑engagement of the RSS structure, and targeted messaging addressing coalition dynamics and local issues. Eknath Shinde’s ‘Ladki Behin Yojana’ once again played a big role.Delhi: A victory 27 years in waiting Soon after Maharashtra, it was the turn of Delhi where BJP had been in exile for 27 years. But BJP managed to win 47 of 70 seats, ending the decade‑long rule of the Aam Aadmi Party. After the 2024 Lok Sabha setback, winning a major urban contest became essential for signalling broader bounce‑back and BJP delivered it in Delhi.Bihar – The ‘garda uda dia’ victoryIn all the state elections that followed 2024 elections, Bihar was the most testing, as BJP allied with Nitish Kumar who himself was fighting anti-incumbency of 20 years and voter fatigue. On the other hand, Tejashwi, who had managed to lead RJD as the single largest party the last time in 2020, was named the CM candidate of the Mahagathbandhan. The opposition led the charge while making “vote-theft” and SIR the main attack points against the ruling coalition. But on Friday the NDA recorded its second-best in Bihar with 206 seats. BJP itself almost bested its best performance in the state with 90 seats against 91 from 2010.How did BJP do it?BJP has mastered the art of deflecting the built-up anti-incumbency against being years in governance, to scratching the social hegemonic memories and using it as a launch pad for presenting themselves as an alternative to it.In Haryana they did it by reminding the masses about the Jaat dominance, and consolidating the non-jaat votes, creating a counter polarisation against the very deeply rooted jaat politics of the state and backed it up by giving a Punjabi Khatri and then an OBC CM.Maharashtra was no different, where despite having a strong Maratha face in incumbent CM Eknath Shinde, BJP played on anti-Maratha plank, creating a wider caste coalition, at a time when Manoj Jarange Patil’s demand for Maratha reservation had a huge resonance in Maratha region of the state. The BJP-led Mahayuti won 37 of the region’s 46 seats.In Bihar, BJP/NDA made concerted efforts to bring back the memories of “jungle raj” that worked effectively.The biggest strength of the party has been its organisational skills and ground workers who effectively mobilise the voters. PM Modi’s personal guarantees and the idea of a “double-engine” government have also worked in favour of BJP.With Bihar giving an astonishing victory to BJP, the party has yet another state in its kitty. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his victory speech to the BJP workers, has already set the next agenda- 2026 Bengal polls. Pune: Former leader of opposition and Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar on Friday said BJP had deliberately brought out the Mundhwa land deal issue to push its Mahayuti partner, NCP chief Ajit Pawar, on the backfoot before the civic polls.Wadettiwar said, “Ajit Pawar-led NCP has been defamed in the Mundhwa land deal issue and it is a ploy by its own ally BJP. The issue came up just when the civic elections were announced. Using this issue, BJP is trying to weaken Ajit Pawar’s position in his party’s stronghold.”Claiming that involvement of Ajit Pawar’s son, Parth, cannot be denied in the Mundhwa land deal, Wadettiwar said, “BJP knew about the deal, but they waited for the civic polls to be announced. Now they are deliberately putting out details to push Ajit Pawar on the backfoot. Earlier, Uddhav Thackeray’s undivided Shiv Sena was BJP’s target when it was in alliance. Now in Mahayuti, Ajit Pawar’s party is BJP’s new target.”Shiv Sena (UBT)’s senior member Ambadas Danve also accused BJP of first laying a trap for Ajit Pawar and later pretending to rescue him from the Mundhwa land deal controversy. Ajit Pawar’s NCP hit out at the MVA members, stating that the opposition was making baseless allegations against Mahayuti.The state govt has set up a committee under additional chief secretary Vikas Kharage to probe the Mundhwa land deal involving Amadea Enterprises LLP, in which Ajit Pawar’s elder son Parth has a 99% share. The deal was exposed just before the local body polls. Pune: Former leader of opposition and Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar on Friday said BJP had deliberately brought out the Mundhwa land deal issue to push its Mahayuti partner, NCP chief Ajit Pawar, on the backfoot before the civic polls.Wadettiwar said, “Ajit Pawar-led NCP has been defamed in the Mundhwa land deal issue and it is a ploy by its own ally BJP. The issue came up just when the civic elections were announced. Using this issue, BJP is trying to weaken Ajit Pawar’s position in his party’s stronghold.”Claiming that involvement of Ajit Pawar’s son, Parth, cannot be denied in the Mundhwa land deal, Wadettiwar said, “BJP knew about the deal, but they waited for the civic polls to be announced. Now they are deliberately putting out details to push Ajit Pawar on the backfoot. Earlier, Uddhav Thackeray’s undivided Shiv Sena was BJP’s target when it was in alliance. Now in Mahayuti, Ajit Pawar’s party is BJP’s new target.”Shiv Sena (UBT)’s senior member Ambadas Danve also accused BJP of first laying a trap for Ajit Pawar and later pretending to rescue him from the Mundhwa land deal controversy.
