MUMBAI: Four years after GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering) opened its doors to commerce and humanities students, their participation in the exam remains minimal. Though up by 30%, from 14,000 in the first year (2021) to 18,762 in 2025, the aspirants in this category still account for 2% of the total. GATE is conducted by the IITs and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, for admissions to postgraduate programmes.Atul Negi, the head of mechanical engineering department at a leading GATE coaching institute, said not many aspirants know about the GATE offerings in humanities. “Most aspirants associate GATE with engineering and may have never thought of applying. Some may believe that the difficulty level is high too. Also, except for the humanities’ departments at IITs, not many institutions consider GATE scores for their masters or doctoral admissions. The central govt also introduced another national university-level examination, Central University Entrance Test (CUET), for admissions to postgraduate courses,” he said. “The IITs need to promote the humanities papers more aggressively.”Of the humanities subjects, psychology, English and economics are most in demand, shows data from the GATE 2025 report, largely reflecting the trend in humanities’ admissions across many universities in the country. In GATE 2023 and 2024, English was the most popular humanities subject. Meanwhile, interest in computer science and allied fields has risen sharply, with applications more than doubling, a rise of nearly 110% over just three exams. Computer science and information technology has driven the overall growth in total applicants, overtaking civil engineering to become the most popular choice.Data science and artificial intelligence, a paper which was started in GATE 2024 and preferred by students with computers and mathematics background, is already seeing registrations from close to 76,000 candidates. The Election Commission has ordered a Special Revision of Assam’s electoral rolls, with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date and the final list due February 10, 2026. This focused update aims for accuracy, falling between routine and intensive revisions. The process involves door-to-door verification by BLOs using pre-filled registers. NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Monday ordered a “Special Revision” of electoral rolls in Assam, with the final voter list scheduled for publication on February 10, 2026. In its instructions to the state’s chief electoral officer, the poll panel said January 1, 2026 would be the qualifying date for the revision exercise. Officials said the Special Revision falls between the annual special summary revision and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in terms of scale and intensity.Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the Election Commission’s decision and assured full cooperation from the state administration. “The Govt of Assam welcomes the Election Commission of India’s decision to undertake a Special Revision of the electoral rolls with 01.01.2026 as the qualifying date,” he posted on X. “This will help ensure clean, updated and accurate electoral rolls for all eligible citizens. Assam will extend full cooperation to the @ECISVEEP to complete the revision in a transparent and time-bound manner,” he added.How is Special Revision different from SIR?According to officials, the Special Revision stands somewhere between the annual special summary revision and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.A Special Revision is a focused exercise aimed at updating and correcting the rolls without undertaking a full-scale enumeration. It is designed to strengthen accuracy and address gaps in the list in a structured but moderate manner. A Special Intensive Revision, however, is a far more rigorous and exhaustive process. It involves deeper verification, multiple checks, intensive field work and a higher degree of scrutiny, usually deployed when major corrections or cleansing of the rolls are required. The Special Revision ordered for Assam is therefore more extensive than a routine summary revision but not as demanding as a full SIR.”It is in a way an upgrade of special summary revision… instead of enumeration forms, booth-level officers will verify electors on a pre-filled register,” a senior functionary explained.According to the schedule, door-to-door verification will be carried out from November 22 to December 20. The integrated draft electoral roll will be published on December 27, and the final roll on February 10 next year.For field verification, booth level officers (BLOs) will be issued a pre-filled register containing the details of existing electors in their respective parts for house-to-house verification. Each household will serve as the basic unit for confirming or correcting voter details through direct interaction with residents or the head of the family.The poll panel clarified that the details of D-Voters (doubtful voters) will not be included in the BLO register as no verification is required in their case. D-Voters are individuals flagged for lacking valid citizenship documents under the Foreigners Act, 1946, and are identified through special tribunals. Although they do not receive voter cards, their particulars, such as name, age and photograph, will continue to be carried forward to the draft electoral roll without alteration. The Election Commission has ordered a Special Revision of Assam’s electoral rolls, with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date and the final list due February 10, 2026. NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Monday ordered a “Special Revision” of electoral rolls in Assam, with the final voter list scheduled for publication on February 10, 2026. In its instructions to the state’s chief electoral officer, the poll panel said January 1, 2026 would be the qualifying date for the revision exercise. Officials said the Special Revision falls between the annual special summary revision and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in terms of scale and intensity.Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the Election Commission’s decision and assured full cooperation from the state administration. “The Govt of Assam welcomes the Election Commission of India’s decision to undertake a Special Revision of the electoral rolls with 01.01.2026 as the qualifying date,” he posted on X. “This will help ensure clean, updated and accurate electoral rolls for all eligible citizens. Assam will extend full cooperation to the @ECISVEEP to complete the revision in a transparent and time-bound manner,” he added.How is Special Revision different from SIR?According to officials, the Special Revision stands somewhere between the annual special summary revision and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.A Special Revision is a focused exercise aimed at updating and correcting the rolls without undertaking a full-scale enumeration. It is designed to strengthen accuracy and address gaps in the list in a structured but moderate manner. A Special Intensive Revision, however, is a far more rigorous and exhaustive process. It involves deeper verification, multiple checks, intensive field work and a higher degree of scrutiny, usually deployed when major corrections or cleansing of the rolls are required. The Special Revision ordered for Assam is therefore more extensive than a routine summary revision but not as demanding as a full SIR.”It is in a way an upgrade of special summary revision… instead of enumeration forms, booth-level officers will verify electors on a pre-filled register,” a senior functionary explained.According to the schedule, door-to-door verification will be carried out from November 22 to December 20. The integrated draft electoral roll will be published on December 27, and the final roll on February 10 next year.For field verification, booth level officers (BLOs) will be issued a pre-filled register containing the details of existing electors in their respective parts for house-to-house verification. Each household will serve as the basic unit for confirming or correcting voter details through direct interaction with residents or the head of the family.The poll panel clarified that the details of D-Voters (doubtful voters) will not be included in the BLO register as no verification is required in their case. D-Voters are individuals flagged for lacking valid citizenship documents under the Foreigners Act, 1946, and are identified through special tribunals. Although they do not receive voter cards, their particulars, such as name, age and photograph, will continue to be carried forward to the draft electoral roll without alteration. A devastating bus fire near Medina in Saudi Arabia has claimed the lives of 45 Umrah pilgrims from Telangana, with only one survivor. According to the Telangana CMO, two family members of each victim will also be facilitated to travel to Saudi Arabia.Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed the chief secretary and the director general of police to gather complete details of the passengers without delay. NEW DELHI: The Court of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (CCPD) has asked NCERT — in coordination with Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre, National Institute of Open Schooling and CBSE — to ensure conversion of textbooks for classes 1-12 into Indian Sign Language (ISL) within three months.CCPD also recommended that all central and state education boards, including CBSE, must immediately incorporate ISL as a standalone language subject from classes 1 to 12. “ISL must also be offered as a literature subject at the university level, on par with other Indian languages,” it said.In an order issued on October 16, chief commissioner Rajesh Aggarwal has sought an action taken report ministries concerned, institutions and state govts within three months.The directions come in a case where CCPD took suo motu cognisance regarding acute shortage of adequate govt-recognised sign language interpreters in both inclusive and special schools.It highlighted that this gap, resulting from shortage of interpreters, disproportionately affects children with hearing impairments — who represent about 20% of the disabled population between ages six and 20 — leading to high dropout rates and a loss of national potential.“Despite the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 mandating the standardisation of ISL, development of curriculum resources, and its use as a medium of instruction, implementation remains limited. The policy also tasks the National Institute of Open Schooling with developing quality ISL modules, yet these measures were seen to have made little progress,” CCPD said. NEW DELHI: In the next two decades, Indians facing the threat of going blind due to diabetic retinopathy (DR) could well exceed the entire population of Sri Lanka. This may sound alarming, but data indicates that by 2045, more than 125 million Indians will be living with diabetes — and of these, 16.9%, or over 21 million people, are projected to develop diabetic retinopathy. Data also shows that 4% to 5% of all people with diabetes — about 5 to 6 million — may lose their eyesight if timely action is not taken.Aware of this growing threat, the government is seeking to tackle DR through a unified, India-specific framework with the newly released Revised National Guidelines for the Management of Diabetic Retinopathy (2025). The guidelines were launched by VISION 2020 at a one-day National Summit on Diabetic Retinopathy held on Friday, bringing together 200 experts from across the country. The chief guest at the event was Dr VK Paul, member, NITI Aayog.The guidelines aim to boost awareness by raising DR screening rates to 80% and ensuring at least 50% follow-up, anchored in a unified message — “Check yearly and See Clearly.” They recommend leveraging chemists, laboratories, PHCs, corporates, community groups and mass media to reach people with diabetes, supported by counselling, SMS reminders and standard IEC materials. A devastating bus crash in Medina, Saudi Arabia, has claimed the lives of over 40 Indian Umrah pilgrims. The bus, en route from Mecca, collided with a tanker, with many victims reportedly from Hyderabad. Indian authorities, including the Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister, have expressed deep sorrow and are providing assistance to affected families. I pray for the swift recovery of all those injured. Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are providing all possible assistance. Our officials are also in close contact with Saudi Arabian authorities.”Over 40 Indians From Hyderabad Travelling From Mecca To Medina Feared Killed in Saudi Bus CrashAccording to initial reports, the crash took place early Monday when a passenger bus travelling from Mecca to Medina collided with a diesel tanker. The pilgrims had completed their rituals in Mecca and were heading to Medina when the collision occurred around 1.30 am IST. Many of the victims are believed to be from Hyderabad. Local sources said more than 40 people died on the spot, while the Telangana Haj Committee stated that 42 pilgrims had lost their lives. The victims reportedly include women and children, and most passengers were asleep at the time of the crash.Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy said he was shocked to hear about the tragedy and instructed officials to urgently collect detailed information, including the number of passengers from Telangana. The state government has set up a control room to assist affected families, while authorities remain in contact with the Ministry of External Affairs and Saudi officials.The Indian Consulate in Jeddah has activated a 24×7 helpline to support families seeking information. Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said he contacted travel agencies and MEA officials and shared passenger details with the Indian Embassy in Riyadh. NEW DELHI: The govt’s unified digital platform, e-Jagriti, which enables consumers to file and track grievances with all consumer commissions, has garnered over 2.7 lakh registered users, including 1,388 NRIs, since its launch on Jan 1.In a statement, the consumer affairs department said on Sunday that as of Nov 13, the unified portal has facilitated over 1.3 lakh case filings and ensured the disposal of more than 1.27 lakh cases. “This year, 466 complaints by NRIs have been filed through the platform, with major participation from countries such as the US (146), UK (52), the UAE (47), Canada (39), Australia (26) and Germany (18),” it said.The e-Jagriti platform integrates legacy systems and portals into a single seamless interface. It streamlines procedures for citizens by reducing paperwork, minimising travel and eliminating physical documentation. It also strengthens access for NRIs by removing geographical barriers and allowing them to assert their consumer rights from abroad.The department said with its OTP-based registration, e-Jagriti enables people, including NRIs, to file complaints, make digital or offline fee payments, participate in virtual hearings, exchange documents online and track cases in real time. It is operational at the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) and in all states and UTs“NRIs and citizens can file and manage cases from any location, with secure end-to-end encryption and role-based permissions. Automated workflows, real-time updates via SMS/email, and virtual hearings have contributed to disposal rates exceeding 100% in 10 states and in the NCDRC recently. Features such as multilingual interfaces and accessibility tools make it user-friendly for diverse demographics, while integration with Bharat Kosh and PayGov gateways ensures hassle-free fee payments,” an official said.The department said the platform has recorded an increase in disposal efficiency this year. Between July-Aug, 27,545 cases were disposed of against 27,080 filed, and in Sept-Oct, 24,504 cases were disposed of against 21,592 filed — both surpassing the 2024 performance and demonstrating faster resolution of complaints. NEW DELHI: The NIA has arrested a Kashmiri resident who had conspired with suicide bomber Umar Un Nabi to carry out the suicide blast at Red Fort last Monday.Amir Rashid Ali, a resident of Samboora, Pampore, in whose name the car involved in the attack was registered, was arrested in Delhi.”Amir had come to Delhi to facilitate the purchase of the car, which was eventually used as a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (IED) to trigger the blast,” the NIA said.The NIA also confirmed on Sunday that it had forensically established the identity of the deceased driver of the vehicle-borne IED as Umar Un Nabi, a resident of Pulwama district who worked as an assistant professor in general medicine department in Al Falah University at Faridabad.The anti-terror agency has also seized another vehicle belonging to Nabi, it said. The vehicle is being examined for evidence in the case.The NIA has so far examined 73 witnesses, including those injured in the blast that rocked the national capital on Nov 10. “Working in close coordination with Delhi police, J&K police, Haryana police, UP police and various sister agencies, NIA is continuing its investigation across states. It is pursuing multiple leads to unearth the larger conspiracy behind the bombing and identify others involved in the case,” NIA said in a statement.Meanwhile, three cartridges were recovered from the Red Fort blast spot-two live and one empty-all of 9mm calibre. Cops are probing how the three cartridges were recovered from the blast site. These cartridges are prohibited for civilian use, police said.While scanning the modules’ online communications, the investigators have also stumbled upon chats intended to brainwash other youths, including women. NEW DELHI: The NIA has arrested a Kashmiri resident who had conspired with suicide bomber Umar Un Nabi to carry out the suicide blast at Red Fort last Monday.Amir Rashid Ali, a resident of Samboora, Pampore, in whose name the car involved in the attack was registered, was arrested in Delhi.”Amir had come to Delhi to facilitate the purchase of the car, which was eventually used as a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (IED) to trigger the blast,” the NIA said.The NIA also confirmed on Sunday that it had forensically established the identity of the deceased driver of the vehicle-borne IED as Umar Un Nabi, a resident of Pulwama district who worked as an assistant professor in general medicine department in Al Falah University at Faridabad.The anti-terror agency has also seized another vehicle belonging to Nabi, it said. The vehicle is being examined for evidence in the case.The NIA has so far examined 73 witnesses, including those injured in the blast that rocked the national capital on Nov 10. “Working in close coordination with Delhi police, J&K police, Haryana police, UP police and various sister agencies, NIA is continuing its investigation across states. It is pursuing multiple leads to unearth the larger conspiracy behind the bombing and identify others involved in the case,” NIA said in a statement.Meanwhile, three cartridges were recovered from the Red Fort blast spot-two live and one empty-all of 9mm calibre. Cops are probing how the three cartridges were recovered from the blast site. These cartridges are prohibited for civilian use, police said.While scanning the modules’ online communications, the investigators have also stumbled upon chats intended to brainwash other youths, including women.
