Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, on Friday, said that in light of emerging technologies posing unprecedented challenges, the world needs a more just, inclusive, and responsive global system.Addressing the 26th ICCJW (International Conference of Chief Justices of the World), he emphasised that even 80 years after its adoption, the UN Declaration remains relevant today.He further emphasised that, whether addressing the challenge of global warming or finding solutions to the world crisis, India’s perspective can provide a path forward.”While emerging technologies are making life easier, they also pose unprecedented challenges, including cybercrime, data theft, and many other new problems. At such a time, justice and morality can play a vital role in shaping global peace and human civilisation. We should reconsider the UN’s declaration 80 years ago: that the world needs a more just, inclusive, and responsive global system. Eighty years on, this declaration remains relevant today,” said the Uttar Pradesh chief minister.”Our need today is not limited to those old beliefs, but to consider contemporary needs and better utilise platforms like the UN by speaking out on issues like climate change, cybersecurity, health crises, and global terrorism. We should also consider the ancient system of India in which the worship of earth, water, fire, air and sky is considered the basis and in the tradition of India, by considering them as a part of our life, their purity and their protection have always been given priority. Addressing a gathering in Bhopal, he highlighted the importance of fulfilling one’s duties and responsibilities, even in the face of personal constraints citing his recent past as proof.Speaking at the launch of Hum Aur Yeh Vishwa, a book by RSS joint general secretary Manmohan Vaidya, Dhankhar remarked, “In today’s time, people are drifting away from morality and spirituality. ‘Main flight pakadne ki chinta se apne kartavya ko nahin chhod sakta’. My recent past is proof of it…”Dhankhar also warned against getting caught in a narrative, saying that once you’re stuck, it becomes very difficult to get out, adding that “I am not giving my example.”“‘Bhagwan kare ki koi narrative ke chakkar mein na fas jaye, iss chakravyuh mein koi fass gaya toh nikalna bada mushkil hain (God forbid that anyone gets caught up in a narrative; if someone gets trapped in this labyrinth, it becomes very difficult to get out)’. NEW DELHI: Wing Commander Naman Syal was identified as the pilot of the ill-fated Tejas fighter jet that crashed during the Dubai Airshow on Friday, news agency ANI reported.Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu paid tribute to the officer, who hailed from Kangra district. In a message on X, he wrote: “The news of the demise of Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district’s brave son Naman Syal ji in the Tejas aircraft accident at the Dubai Air Show is extremely heartbreaking and soul-shattering. The nation has lost a courageous, dutiful, and valiant pilot.”The single-engine aircraft went down around 2:10pm local time after abruptly losing altitude mid-manoeuvre, before crashing in a fireball near the Al Maktoum International Airport. NEW DELHI: Wing Commander Naman Syal was identified as the pilot of the ill-fated Tejas fighter jet that crashed during the Dubai Airshow on Friday, news agency ANI reported.Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu paid tribute to the officer, who hailed from Kangra district. The nation has lost a courageous, dutiful, and valiant pilot.”The single-engine aircraft went down around 2:10pm local time after abruptly losing altitude mid-manoeuvre, before crashing in a fireball near the Al Maktoum International Airport. NEW DELHI: Will the Congress replace Siddaramaiah with D K Shivakumar as the chief minister of Karnataka? Had the top Congress leadership agreed to a power-sharing formula in 2023 to broker truce between two of its tallest leaders in the state – both vying for the top post? While the Congress has refused to clear the air on these questions, the supporters of the two heavyweights have on several occassions made contrary claims in the open much to the embarrassment of the party leadership. Little wonder then on November 20, when Siddaramaiah completed two and a half years as the chief minister, reports quoting Congress sources suggested that at least 15 MLAs and about a dozen MLCs have camped in Delhi to push the party leadership to make Shivakumar the next chief minister. Ironically, Karnataka, which gave the Congress one of its biggest electoral victories in recent times when in 2023 the grand-old party stormed to power with 135 seats in the 224-member state assembly, has also been one of its biggest worries since then.With the Congress leadership dithering – the internal ‘nataka’ in the state is out in the open like never before forcing the party to issue a stern warning to its MLAs and leaders against making any public statements on the issue of leadership.This even as Siddaramaiah has been quick to interpret the leadership’s silence as a tacit approval for his stand on the issue. “Has the high command spoken on it? We can’t help it. Earlier also some people were discussing it, and now they might have gone (to Delhi). Finally, Shivakumar and I have to listen to whatever the high command says,” the chief minister said when asked about some MLAs and MLCs camping in Delhi. To a question whether he would present the next two state budgets, Siddaramaiah retorted, “Why are you asking this? Yes, I will continue. I will present the budgets in future also.”Clearly, the chief minister seems to be in no mood to step down. This should worry the Congress as DK Shivakumar, while not raising the pitch himself, has backed the action of his supporters. “All MLAs have the right to visit and meet their leaders. You cannot stop them. You cannot tell them not to go. Many MLAs travel with ministers, and many go with the chief minister. Who has stopped them? No one has troubled them,” the deputy chief minister said defending the leaders who reportedly went to Delhi in his support.DK Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress president, has made it clear that he expects the party high command to do the needfull. Refusing to join issues with Siddaramaiah, DKS has shifted the onus to party’s leadership. “Our CM has always articulated his ideology. I will not comment on it. He has said the matter is between him and the high command. Siddaramaiah has stated that he will abide by whatever the high command decides. The CM will listen to the high command, and I am also on the same page. We are all committed to the high command’s decision,” DKS said when asked about Siddaramaiah’s claim of completing his full tenure of five years. “Honourable CM Siddaramaiah has stated that he will complete five years. I wish him all the luck,” DKS added in a cryptic response.Interestingly, Randeep Singh Surjewala, the AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, tried to put the blame for leadership tussle on a “decisively defeated and faction-ridden” BJP, along with a section of the media. “Had a discussion with Karnataka CM and Deputy CM and they agreed that a decisively defeated and faction ridden Karnataka BJP, along with a section of the media, are designedly running a maligning campaign against Karnataka and its Congress government,” he alleged in a post on ‘X’. Surjewala and the Congress would do well to accept that it is their leaders and MLAs who are speaking in public leading to speculations.The Congress leadership needs to act before it is too late. Both Siddaramaiah and DKS enjoy considerable support in the state perhaps making it difficult for the Congress leadership to take a decision. However, the delay and dithering could prove costly to the grand-old party, which has its own government in only 3 states – Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Himachal.The Congress leadership would do well to remember Rajasthan where leadership tussle between two state heavyweights cost its government and the party almost lost Sachin Pilot. In a recent paper, the team with a Stanford professor, Aditi Sheshadri, examined top AI weather models against real Indian observations and found an unsettling pattern: many systems underestimate extreme rainfall and misjudge cyclone paths. In a monsoon country, those errors can be existential. These findings now inform Pravāh’s India-specific forecasting architecture, built on the premise that global models rarely understand local weather dynamics. These maps show peak-summer temperatures in Gujarat and compare them with forecasts from the world’s leading AI weather models. Research done by Pravāh’s team with a Stanford professor shows that even the best global models are noticeably off for India, especially during heatwaves. If the models were perfect, the maps would be white (not blue or red). The declaration comes just days after the newly launched party suffered a major setback in its debut Bihar assembly elections, failing to win a single seat despite an energetic start to its campaign.Jan Suraaj drew a blank in the polls, unable to open its account amid a sweeping victory for the NDA.Addressing reporters after a day-long silent fast at the Gandhi Ashram in West Champaran, Kishor also accused the newly formed Nitish Kumar cabinet of being packed with tainted leaders. “The new cabinet of Nitish Kumar, which took oath on Thursday, is full of corrupts and criminals. I must say that this council of ministers is a slap in the face of the people of Bihar. It’s like rubbing salt on the wound as several corrupt leaders were inducted,” he alleged.Kishor further claimed the appointments show that “Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah and CM Kumar are least concerned about Bihar.” He also accused the ruling alliance of buying votes through cash transfers. “They have purchased votes by transferring Rs 10,000 into the bank account of more than 1 crore women. Now, they have no concern for the state or the people,” he said, adding, “If I am saying anything wrong, the state government can put me behind bars.”According to him, funds meant for the state’s contingency reserve and a World Bank grant were diverted for the cash transfer scheme. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh suggested the prime minister was attending the event “safely and securely” because US President Donald Trump has chosen to boycott it, and wondered whether “huglomacy” with “my good friend” would revive when the next Summit takes place in the US.The prime minister embarked on a three-day visit to South Africa on Friday to attend the G20 Summit.Ramesh, Congress general secretary in charge of communications, noted that the next G20 Summit, a year from now, will be held in the United States and that by then India’s trade “(or)deal” with Washington would presumably be completed.“But if in the past seven months, President Trump has claimed 61 times that he halted Operation Sindoor, imagine how many more times he will repeat those claims in the next twelve months,” Ramesh said on X.He said the prime minister was attending the Johannesburg Summit “safely and securely” since “President Trump and the US are boycotting the summit”.“Recall that Mr Modi didn’t go to Kuala Lumpur a few days back for the India-Asean Summit since he would then have to come face-to-face with President Trump,” he added.Calling the situation “extraordinary,” Ramesh criticised US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for opposing South Africa’s G20 themes of solidarity, equality and sustainability on grounds that they amounted to anti-Americanism.“It is incidentally the very same Marco Rubio who was the first, at 5:37 PM on May 10th, to announce to the world the abrupt halt to Operation Sindoor,” he said.Ramesh also pointed out that the G20 presidency rotates annually: India assumed it from Indonesia in November 2023 and handed it to Brazil in November 2024. NEW DELHI: A new national white paper has exposed a sweeping health-insurance crisis for persons with disabilities in India, revealing that 80% still have no health cover, while 53% of those who applied were rejected by insurers — and 60% of them were given no reason at all. Based on a survey of over 5,000 people across 34 states and UTs, the report warns that millions remain locked out of basic financial protection despite clear legal safeguards.Despite constitutional mandates, judicial interventions, directives by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (2016), the white paper notes persistent challenges in current insurance products. Many cases of denial are based solely on disability status, compounded by pre-existing conditions, with evidence of such practices often failing to reach regulators or the insurance ombudsman.Released on Thursday by the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), the report calls the scale of exclusion “a rights crisis hidden in plain sight,” affecting nearly 16 crore Indians with disabilities. Applicants with autism, psychosocial disabilities, intellectual disabilities and blood disorders such as thalassemia face some of the highest rejection rates. Even those who attempt to navigate the system encounter inaccessible digital platforms, unaffordable premiums and limited awareness of available schemes.Arman Ali, executive director of NCPEDP, said the findings expose a national inequity India can no longer ignore. “Ayushman Bharat is expanding to cover all senior citizens above 70. Yet persons with disabilities — who face equal or greater health vulnerabilities — remain conspicuously excluded,” he said. “If India can include all senior citizens above 70, there is no justification to exclude persons with 21 types of disabilities without income and age criteria. India cannot afford the generational cost of this exclusion.”To close this gap, the white paper recommends immediate inclusion of all persons with disabilities under Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) without age or income criteria. It also calls for stronger coverage of mental health, rehabilitation and assistive technologies; a Disability Inclusion Committee within IRDAI; standardised premiums; and fully accessible digital and offline insurance processes. A national awareness drive is urgently needed to shift the narrative from charity to rights-based healthcare.Experts warn that the consequences of this exclusion are severe — from delayed treatment and catastrophic out-of-pocket spending to deeper poverty among already vulnerable families. But a new three-paper Lancet Series warns that these factory-made, additive-loaded products are helping drive a global rise in obesity and diabetes — a trend already unfolding rapidly in India.The Series brings together global evidence, including a review of 104 studies, of which 92 linked UPF-heavy diets to chronic diseases. Meta-analyses of 15 health outcomes showed significant associations for 12, including type 2 diabetes, obesity and even depression. India has not conducted such studies, and therefore no Indian data could be included — a gap experts say the country can no longer ignore.For India, the findings demand urgent policy action, says Dr. Vandana Prasad, community paediatrician and technical advisor at Public Health Resource Society. She argues that UPFs cannot be regulated like ordinary junk food. “Companies reduce salt or sugar to dodge High in Fat, Sugar and Salt (HFSS) limits, but the product remains ultra-processed because the additives stay,” she says. She calls for a clear legal definition of UPFs, strong front-of-pack warning labels, advertising restrictions, a UPF tax and subsidies for fresh foods, emphasising that healthy eating cannot depend on willpower alone when the entire food environment is engineered for overconsumption.Adding to this, Dr. Arun Gupta, paediatrician and Series co-author, says India is in the middle of the very shift the Lancet warns against — traditional meals being rapidly replaced by industrial UPFs promoted aggressively, especially to children. With no national data on UPF consumption, he cautions that India will struggle to slow rising obesity and diabetes unless it directly addresses the spread and marketing of such products.The scale of India’s health burden makes the warning even more urgent. The ICMR–INDIAB-17 (2023) study reports obesity in 28.6% of Indians, diabetes in 11.4%, prediabetes in 15.3%, and abdominal obesity in nearly 40%. Childhood obesity has increased as well — from 2.1% to 3.4% between NFHS-4 and NFHS-5.Prof K. Srinath Reddy, Chancellor, PHFI University of Public Health Sciences, notes that UPFs do more than add empty calories. The first kiss happened long before humans walked the Earth—somewhere in the misty forests of prehistoric Africa, between two ape ancestors, 16.9-21.5 million years ago.As per a new evolutionary study, a kiss is better understood as an ancient, risky mouth-to-mouth gamble that large apes, and probably Neanderthals, started playing millions of years ago. And instead of asking what a kiss means, researchers went after a tougher question: why this odd, germ-sharing behaviour evolved at all in the first place.Researchers from University of Oxford, University College London, and the Florida Institute of Technology began by stripping the sentimentality out of kissing and giving it a cross-species definition: non-aggressive, mouth-to-mouth contact within a species, with some lip or mouth movement and no food transfer.That rules out feeding, “kiss-fighting” and your dog licking your face, but includes everything from human deep kisses to brief pecks between monkeys and apes. NEW DELHI: A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday disapproved in dismay a two-judge bench’s decision to use SC’s Article 142 powers to grant ‘deemed assent’ to 10 Bills pending for long with Tamil Nadu governor and said it was a fallacious exercise of powers to achieve a constitutionally impermissible goal. A bench of Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, P S Narasimha and A S Chandurkar said, “We have no hesitation in concluding that the concept of deemed assent of pending Bills by the Court in exercise of jurisdiction under Article 142, is virtually a takeover of the role, and function, of a separate constitutional authority. The reliance on Article 142, can’t lead to supplanting constitutional provisions itself.” It also faulted the two-judge bench’s decision in TN case for prescribing the timeline for the governors and the President and then subjecting their decision to judicial scrutiny on expiry of the timelines when the Constitution clearly prescribes that their decision on Bills are non-justiciable. The five-judge bench said, “We have no hesitation in concluding that deemed consent of the Governor, or President, under Article 200 or 201 at the expiry of a judicially set timeline, is virtually a takeover, and substitution, of the executive functions by the Judiciary, through judicial pronouncement, which is impermissible within the contours of our written Constitution.” “… We are of the considered opinion that Article 142 cannot be employed to arrive at a conclusion contrary to the express provisions of the Constitution,” the bench-led by CJI Gavai ruled in its unanimous opinion to the President. “It is a matter of settled law that jurisdiction under Article 142 cannot be invoked to achieve results that are contrary to the Constitution, or statutory provisions,” it said. “The concept of ‘deemed assent’ in the context of Articles 200 and 201 presupposes that one constitutional authority (the SC), could play a ‘substitutional role’ for another constitutional functionary (the Governor, or President).
