NEW DELHI: Several tourists were left suspended nearly 120 feet above ground at a private sky-dining facility in Kerala’s Anachal, Idukki, after a crane suffered a technical failure on Friday. The visitors remained stuck for over one and a half hours.Rescue teams arrived at the site and efforts to bring them down safely are under way.The incident occurred near Munnar where a crane-operated dining platform, part of an adventure tourism initiative, had been offering visitors an aerial dining experience. The system, introduced only a few months ago, allows up to 16 people to be seated at a time, lifting them high above the valley for about half an hour while they dine with panoramic views.According to local reports the platform could not be lowered due to a mechanical fault believed to be related to the crane’s fuse. Fire and security personnel deployed from Munnar are currently working on alternative methods, including lowering individuals using ropes. New Delhi, Former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday demanded that the central government immediately remove 18 per cent GST imposed on air and water purifiers, in view of the worsening air quality in Delhi-NCR.In a post on X in Hindi, he stressed that clean air and clean water are the basic rights of every citizen.”In Delhi and across North India, the air has become deadly. Instead of providing solutions, the government is collecting more taxes from the public,” he said in the post.He further pointed that when people go to buy air purifiers to protect their families from pollution, they find that the government is charging 18 per cent GST on them, which is outright injustice.The former AAP supremo demanded that the Centre immediately remove the GST imposed on air and water purifiers. “If you cannot provide solutions, at least stop burdening the pockets of the people,” he added.The air quality is likely to remain ‘very poor’ over the coming week, according to the forecast by the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi.With Delhi’s air quality slipping into the ‘very poor’ and ‘severe’ categories this winter, doctors have stressed the need for regular diagnostic screening to detect early signs of pollution-linked health deterioration, especially among smokers, asthma patients, children and people with pre-existing cardiac or respiratory conditions. The Prime Minister is the self-proclaimed champion of both Africa and the Global South. Will he take up South Africa’s cause with his good friend and ensure that it will get to attend the next G20 Summit – as it is perfectly entitled to?”Earlier, on Wednesday, in a post on Truth Social, Trump announced that he would block South Africa’s participation in the 2026 summit, which will be hosted by the United States.”Therefore, at my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. In his post, Trump added that Washington has suspended all payments and subsidies to Pretoria. He claimed the South African government was failing to address alleged human rights abuses against white communities, accusations that Pretoria has firmly rejected.Ramesh said that South Africa has been a G20 member from the very beginning because it is the continent’s largest economy by GDP, not because of any favour from the US. He stressed that the country has been a “valued presence” in every G20 Summit since the first meeting in Washington DC in 2008.The Congress leader also highlighted the deep ties between India and South Africa, through groupings such as BRICS, IBSA and BASIC and referred to India’s historic role in supporting the anti-apartheid struggle. “South Africa and India share a special relationship. They are part of the original BRICS group also involving Brazil, Russia, and China. They are also part of IBSA along with Brazil and of BASIC as well along with Brazil and China.” Ramesh also invoked historical ties between India and South Africa, highlighting the shared legacy of struggle and cooperation. “It has often been remarked that an Indian lawyer went to South Africa in the late 19th century and returned home as a revolutionary in the early years of the 20th century to lead India’s independence movement,” he further wrote, referring to Mahatma Gandhi.Another senior Congress leader, Anand Sharma, also criticised Trump’s decision, calling it a violation of the G20’s founding principles of equality among nations. He urged India to take a “firm position” and rally the Global South against “new imperialism.””It is an insult to the African continent and the Global South. India has a moral duty to take a firm position and mobilise the Global South to collectively reject the new imperialism,” Sharma said.South African President Cyril Ramaphosa labelled Trump’s move “regrettable”, saying it was driven by misinformation rather than diplomatic engagement. NEW DELHI: Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar on Friday said that he will travel to Delhi to meet the high command over the “power tussle” between him and Siddaramaiah regarding the chief ministerial post.DKS said that he, along with chief minister Siddaramaiah, will travel to Delhi and the high command will make a decision over the anticipated reshuffle of the government.“I will definitely go to Delhi. It is our temple. Congress has a long history, and Delhi will always guide us. When they call me, party leaders and the CM, we will go there,” Shivakumar said.“My community is the Congress. I may belong to one community, and they may like it, but my love is for all sections of society… I don’t want anything; my party will make the decision,” he added.This comes as speculations over a change of guard in Karnataka grew as soon as the Congress government completed its halfway mark on November 20. Reports quoting Congress sources suggested that MLAs and MLCs from Shivakumar’s faction had camped in Delhi to push the party high command to make him the next chief minister.DK Shivakumar added to the speculations after he claimed that there had indeed been “a confidential understanding on leadership transition among five-six leaders” soon after Congress won a landslide in the 2023 elections.The deputy chief minister made the first reference to the power pact but stopped short of divulging more details. “This is confidential. I don’t want to speak publicly on this,” he said.However, the Congress chief played down the “internal conflict” within the party and said that the “high command” will sit together and deliberate on the issue.“Only the people there can say what the government is doing. But I would like to say that we will resolve such issues,” Kharge had said.“People in the high command — Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and I — will sit together and deliberate on this… We will give the medicine when required,” he added.This was the first acknowledgment by Kharge that there is indeed a power struggle between Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar in Karnataka.Meanwhile, Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge also said that the Congress high command possesses the sense of timing to resolve the intensifying “power tussle” between chief minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar.Speaking to reporters, the minister said Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have agreed to travel to Delhi for a meeting when summoned by the party high command.“Nobody has given any official invitation or statement on the meeting in New Delhi. The CM and the deputy CM have said that they will go to Delhi if they are invited by the Congress president or AICC general secretary and Karnataka in charge Randeep Singh Surjewala. Let the invitation come from Delhi, then only it will be decided,” Kharge, who is Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s son, said.Asked about the increasing confusion, Kharge said, “The high command has the sense of timing. Why does your government show no urgency, no plan, no accountability?”He urged immediate parliamentary intervention to address the crisis. “India needs an immediate, detailed Parliament debate on air pollution and a strict, enforceable action plan to tackle this health emergency. Our children deserve clean air — not excuses and distractions,” the Congress leader wrote. As winter sets in, Delhi continues to grapple with very poor air quality. On Friday morning, the city recorded an AQI of 384, categorised as “very poor” by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Several locations, including Ashok Nagar (417), Bawana (413), Jahangirpuri (420) and Burari Crossing (403), fell into the “severe” category.The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) recently lifted Stage III restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) but directed authorities to intensify measures under Stage I and II to prevent pollution levels from worsening. Construction that was previously halted for violations cannot resume without separate clearance, the CAQM added.GRAP is a framework of emergency measures designed to curb pollution in Delhi-NCR according to Air Quality Index levels, ensuring staged interventions when air quality deteriorates. The pavilion was centred on the theme “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” and showcased products from across the state, including Chikankari from Lucknow, Firozabad glasswork, Varanasi silk, Saharanpur woodcraft, Bhadohi-Mirzapur carpets, Khurja ceramics and Aligarh metalware.State MSME, khadi & village industries, silk, handloom & textiles minister Rakesh Sachan visited the pavilion on the final day to review the exhibits. At the conclusion ceremony, he awarded certificates to participating units and acknowledged the efforts of entrepreneurs, artisans, women’s groups and start-ups. UP also secured a bronze medal in the pavilion performance category.Addressing visitors, Sachan said the government is working to expand opportunities for small and micro industries and promote “inclusive, sustainable growth.” He said the Chief Minister Youth Entrepreneur Development Campaign (CM-YUVA) offers interest-free loans of up to Rs 5 lakh, targeting the benefit of over 10 lakh enterprises in the next decade. According to the agency, land in Khasra No. 792 was transferred to the Tarbia Education Foundation, a trust linked to Siddiqui, on the basis of a forged General Power of Attorney (GPA). A General Power of Attorney (GPA) is a legal document that authorises one person to act, sign and make decisions on behalf of another in broad matters, including property and financial transactions.The ED said several landowners whose names appear on the documents had died between 1972 and 1998, yet a GPA dated January 7, 2004, was created in their names and later used to reregister the land.The agency has termed the transfer fraudulent and said the fake documents were the foundation of the acquisition. Siddiqui is currently in ED custody as the probe continues.The ED on November 18 arrested Jawad Ahmed Siddiqui, the founder of Al Falah University, which came under scrutiny after the alleged involvement of three of its professors in a terror module behind the i20 car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort on November 10.Siddiqui, Chairman of Al Falah group, was arrested under Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.The arrest took place after a detailed investigation and analysis of evidence gathered during search action conducted at premises related to Al Falah group in the ongoing probe in an ECIR recorded by the ED under PMLA in connection with the Al Falah Group.The prime accused, Dr Umar Un Nabi, was a former student of the university located in Haryana’s Faridabad.The arrest comes, hours after the ED launched raids against the Al-Falah University along with its office in Okhla and the university’s promoters as initial probe had revealed discrepancies regarding UGC and NAAC recognition.The central agency conducted raids at 25 different places across the national capital, intensifying the Delhi car blast probe. The Planning Department has issued instructions to all departments. No birth certificate is attached to the Aadhaar card; therefore, it cannot be considered a birth certificate. Amit Singh Bansal, Special Secretary of the Planning Department, issued the order to all departments. The Aadhaar card is no longer valid as a birth certificate,” the notification read.The Maharashtra government also issued a similar order that says Aadhaar card will not be considered as a document for making a delayed birth certificate and that all birth certificates made only through the Aadhaar card after the Births and Deaths Registration (Amendment) Act, 2023, will be cancelled, a notice by the State Revenue Department said.Instructions have been given to take action against the officers who have issued these certificates till now.The 16-point verification guideline by the Revenue Department said that the orders issued by the Deputy Tehsildar after the amendment made in the Birth and Death Registration Act, 1969, on August 11, 2023, should be withdrawn, and the withdrawn order should be verified at the level of the competent authority or the District Collector.The move comes even as the Supreme Court has allowed Aadhaar to be used in a different context, like as a proof of identity during inclusion in the Bihar electoral roll. It emphasised that the Army chief has made no such remarks and urged citizens not to share unverified content intended to spread misinformation and undermine faith in the Indian Armed Forces.According to the fake post shared by the Pakistan-based account, it read: “Following the custodial death of Sonam Wangchuk, Indian Army chief Gen. Upendra Dwivedi offered condolences, now being suppressed by media. Even the Army seems exhausted by Hindutva fascists forcing their own agenda.”In the fabricated clip, General Dwivedi could be heard saying: “I express my deep regret at the passing of Sonam Wangchuk while he was in state custody. His death has caused understandable concern among citizens across Ladakh and the rest of the country. As Chief of General Staff, I extend my condolences to his family and to all who knew him. Every life lost under detention demands clarity and accountability. I have requested the central government to conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry. All facts must be verified so that confidence in our institutions remains intact. May his family find strength during this difficult time.”However, fact-checkers confirmed that the original speech was completely unrelated. The authentic video was posted by news agency PTI on the same day and showed General Dwivedi addressing the Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2025.In the original video, Dwivedi stated: “The military is shedding inhibitions, opening ranges, funding startups, and joining national technology missions to strengthen this troika transformation even further.”The PIB warned that such content is created to intentionally spread false narratives and urged social media users to rely only on official and credible sources for accurate information.Wangchuk was detained on September 26, two days after violent protests in Leh demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh that left four people dead and over 90 injured.Authorities have accused him of inciting the unrest. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted searches across 10 states in a bribery probe targeting officials from the National Medical Commission (NMC) and private medical college promoters. This investigation, stemming from a CBI FIR, alleges manipulation of regulatory frameworks through bribe payments for confidential inspection information. Previously, the ED also uncovered an NRI quota admission racket involving forged documents. NEW DELHI: ED Thursday conducted searches at 15 locations across 10 states in an alleged bribery-related probe against officials of NMC and promoters of private medical colleges for manipulation of regulatory frameworks. Medical colleges and their promoters covered under the latest ED action are based in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, MP, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar, UP and Delhi.ED’s money laundering probe is based on an FIR registered by CBI wherein it was alleged that bribes had been paid to govt officials, including those from NMC, in lieu of “disclosing confidential information pertaining to inspection of medical colleges to key managerial persons of private medical colleges and middlemen”, enabling them to manipulate the parameters and obtain approval for running courses.In Aug, ED had busted an NRI quota admission racket at many private medical colleges across country. These colleges had offered admissions to non-deserving Indian candidates on 18,000 MBBS UG/PG seats reserved under the quota, based on forged documents.ED conducted searches at medical colleges in Bengal and Odisha and seized crucial evidence in NRI quota scam. On verifying the seized NRI certificates with the respective Indian embassies and missions, ED found most of them to be forged. Further probe revealed these medical colleges were paying agents to get fake NRI documents prepared, thereby generating huge “proceeds of crime”. Centre has since revised its NRI admission policy with DG of health services issuing fresh guidelines. NEW DELHI: Congress general secretary K C Venugopal and RJD MP Manoj Jha on Thursday told Supreme Court that the Election Commission has no power to determine citizenship of a voter, yet through an “unconstitutional” pan-India Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of state electoral rolls is seeking proof of Indian citizenship from voters.Jha’s counsel Kapil Sibal told a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi that the kind of documents that are being sought from voters through enumeration forms under SIR will disfranchise lakhs and lakhs of voters who would not have documents to show their date of birth, landholding ownership or parents birth certificates. “That is why we are insisting that Aadhaar must be the basis for enrolment in voter list,” Sibal said.’Your Future Is Being Stolen’: Rahul Gandhi’s Bold Message to India’s Gen Z For Democratic ChangeFor Venugopal, senior advocate A M Singhvi said the basis and ground for SIR are both wrong. The SC asked if the reason for SIR is to eliminate the dead from the voter list, would such a reason confine the exercise to one constituency or all constituencies?Singhvi, also appearing for TMC MP Mahua Moitra and NGO People’s Union for Civil Liberties, agreed with Sibal and said the entire exercise is exclusionary. “EC is conducting this exercise with a figment of imagination that masses of illegal migrants are marauding across India. And, the procedure adopted for conducting this exclusionary exercise is neither prescribed by the Constitution nor the RP Act,” he said.Venugopal’s counsel said, “There had been several revisions of electoral rolls since 2003. On one hand, EC is not asking those whose names figure in the 2003 voters’ list for any document. On the other hand, a voter enrolled after 2003 is being discriminatorily asked to prove everything, including citizenship.””Through this exercise to illegally seek proof of citizenship, EC is converting itself into a citizenship tribunal, which is beyond its constitutional mandate. EC can supplement the process prescribed in the RP Act, but not supplant it,” Singhvi said.Sibal said teachers and other govt employees are engaged as booth level officers (BLOs) who have neither the knowledge nor expertise in scrutinising documentary proofs of citizenship nor are they legally empowered to do so as determination of citizenship is entrusted to the ministry of home affairs.Countering Sibal’s assertion, EC counsel Eklavya Dwivedi said BLOs do not scrutinise documents. This is being done by electoral registration officers, who are SDM-level bureaucrats. Sibal said it is the BLO who scrutinises documents and sends doubtful cases to ERO. India faces a growing crisis as common infections become increasingly difficult to treat due to widespread antibiotic resistance. A recent ICMR report reveals that widely used drugs are failing against bacteria causing UTIs, pneumonia, sepsis, and diarrhoeal illnesses. This alarming trend, particularly in hospitals, necessitates urgent action to curb antibiotic misuse and strengthen infection control. NEW DELHI: Some of the most common infections – urinary tract, pneumonia, sepsis and diarrhoeal illnesses – are becoming increasingly harder to treat in India as widely used antibiotics continue to fail at alarming rates.ICMR’s annual report 2024 ‘Antimicrobial Resistance Research & Surveillance Network (AMRSN)’, showed that routine drugs like fluoroquinolones, third-generation cephalosporins, carbapenems and piperacillin-tazobactam are rapidly losing effectiveness against bacteria most frequently seen in hospitals.Based on nearly one lakh lab-confirmed infection samples from leading hospitals, the report showed drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria continue to dominate. E coli, the most common cause of UTIs and abdominal and bloodstream infections, showed declining susceptibility to strong antibiotics. Klebsiella pneumoniae, a major cause of pneumonia and sepsis, is resistant to piperacillin-tazobactam in nearly three-fourths of the cases and to carbapenems in most samples, limiting treatment options.In ICUs, the situation is even more alarming. Acinetobacter baumannii shows 91% resistance to meropenem, forcing doctors to use more toxic or complicated drug combinations. Pseudomonas aeruginosa continues to show rising resistance. Overall, 72% of bloodstream infections were caused by drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, while ventilator-associated pneumonia was driven largely by acinetobacter, klebsiella and pseudomonas – organisms against which many commonly prescribed high-end antibiotics are ineffective.Though some isolated improvements were seen – including better sensitivity of E coli to amikacin and select cephalosporins – the broader resistance landscape continues to worsen. Diarrhoeal pathogens showed high resistance to fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins, and more than 95% of salmonella yyphi samples were resistant to fluoroquinolones. Among fungi, candida auris showed resistance in nearly 10% of isolates, while one-third of aspergillus samples were resistant to amphotericin B.ICMR said the data reflects hospital infections, not community patterns. But experts warn the message is unmistakable: India’s most widely used antibiotics are losing power, and critically ill patients are already facing the consequences. Without aggressive stewardship and rational prescribing, they caution, even common infections may soon become untreatable.Dr Rommel Tickoo, director, internal medicine, Max Hospital, Saket, said the findings mark a dangerous shift. “Strong antibiotics are failing against infections once treated easily. This signals an urgent public-health challenge that demands tighter control on antibiotic use and stronger infection-prevention measures.”Data shows how quickly options are shrinking. “Everyday bacteria are resisting medicines we once relied on. In ICUs, choices are narrowing even further. As it gets ready to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the city has one eye on the 2036 Olympic Games bid. Fuelling it all are infrastructure projects designed to make it the ‘sports capital’ of India . Confirmation of Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG) has sounded the starting gun for an accelerated infrastructure race across the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar belt. The Commonwealth Sport General Assembly’s approval on Wednesday has pushed the twin cities into delivery mode, with officials stressing that major venue construction plans are locked into a firm timeline.Speaking to the media in Glasgow after Ahmedabad won hosting rights, Gujarat principal secretary (sports, youth and cultural activities) Ashwani Kumar said that the city is poised to be the sports capital of India. “The construction of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave (SVPSE) and the Police Academy Sports Hub will begin in April 2026 and finish by late 2028 or early 2029,” he said..He announced that funding for both these projects had been secured by the govt and that “most venues for the 2030 Games are ready”. He also said that the “organising committee will be constituted within a month”.Long-term visionMuch of the Games’ footprint will be centred on the SVPSE — a purpose-built zone that will anchor Gujarat’s longterm sporting ecosystem. The enclave will house an arena, aquatic centre, tennis courts, training zones, and athlete villages. The Karai Police Academy complex will host athletics, shooting and other disciplines. For Gujarat, the CWG is as much about global visibility as about creating infrastructural and sporting capacity that endures beyond 2030..Unlike some sporting meets that span multiple states, the 2030 Games will be strikingly compact, concentrated almost entirely within the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar cluster. That will enable faster movement and a lower carbon footprint. “This compactness cuts athlete travel time and allows seamless integration of metro, BRTS and electric mobility,” states the document, ‘Games Vision, Concept and Legacy — Commonwealth Games 2030’, presented before the CWG committee. Only two disciplines — cycling at the Statue of Unity (near Kevadia) and women’s cricket in Vadodara — will take place outside this hub.The Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket stadium, will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2030 Games — massive productions that are expected to reflect the Commonwealth Sport values.Beyond the Games, Gujarat — which hosted the National Games in 2022 — is pushing lesser-known disciplines like netball, lawn bowls, kabaddi, and yogasana into the spotlight. The bigger shift is strategic — Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar aim to become year round sports cities, with high performance labs, community spaces and university-linked infrastructure to ensure post Games utilisation..Focus on sustainabilityAhmedabad also plans to discuss sustainability, diversity and inclusion during the Commonwealth heads of govt meeting (CHOGM) 2026 and 2028.Tejas Joshi, president of Credai Gujarat, said, “Hosting the CWG will be a game changer for Ahmedabad. The city’s infrastructure will see a drastic change with improved roads and connectivity. It will create demand for around 20,000 star-category hotel rooms and boost hotel and retail development. It will also eventually bring new migration to the city, resulting in increased housing demand.”Accommodation is expanding fast. “Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar offer 5,420 hotel rooms in the 3-5 star range, with 3,000 more planned, including 1,500 new 5-star rooms. Upgraded university hostels will house athletes during the Games and serve students later,” states the proposal..Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport, handling 13.4 million passengers annually, will add a new terminal by 2026 to double its capacity and introduce e-gates and kiosks.Eye on olympics“World-class sports academies will be set up, encouraging a sports culture among city youths. After the Commonwealth Games, Ahmedabad aims to host the 2036 Olympics. The next decade will bring historic developments to the city,” said Joshi.Behind the scenes, athlete development is accelerating. Gujarat’s sports budget has grown from Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 521 crore over two decades, strengthening long-term athlete development pathways and strengthening academies.
