The party had insisted that the agitation’s agenda include demands for the restoration of Article 370, the release of political prisoners, and the lifting of the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami.In a letter to NC president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday, Mehbooba Mufti explained that the party had decided against joining a protest focused solely on the restoration of statehood.”After careful consideration and deliberations with my senior colleagues, I have come to the conclusion that it would not be fit for us to participate in a protest whose raison d’etre is solely and exclusively the demand for statehood,” she wrote.According to the letter, the PDP would participate in a protest at Jantar Mantar only if the restoration of Article 370, the release of political prisoners, and the lifting of the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami formed the core of its agenda.On August 5, 2019, the Narendra Modi government revoked Article 370, which had granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. NTA dismisses discrepancy allegations regarding OMR sheets (Photo: PTI) NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency on Monday publicly rebutted the claims of five NEET-UG candidates alleging discrepancies in their OMR answer sheets, saying the images circulated by or on their behalf had been digitally altered, regenerated using AI or manipulated by adding responses that were not present on the original sheets.The detailed case-wise clarification came a day after TOI reported that NTA had, for the first time, detected AI-generated OMR sheets among complaints challenging NEET-UG 2026 results. The agency had said no error in the declared results had been established so far and warned that candidates using fabricated records could face cancellation of candidature, debarment and criminal proceedings.The results were declared on July 16 after the June 21 re-examination, ordered following the cancellation of the original May test over a question-paper leak. Several candidates and parents had alleged that uploaded OMR sheets were interchanged or showed fewer attempted answers than claimed.In the case of Avaneesh Srivastava, NTA said the genuine OMR bearing his name, parents’ names, signature, thumb impression and invigilators’ signatures was on record and had also been emailed to him during the response-key challenge window. It said the circulated image carried the identity of “Ajeet Singh”, a person with the stated parentage who did not exist in the NEET-UG 2026 database. According to the agency, the printed portion had been regenerated through AI- or OCR-based tools and the identity fields overwritten. Srivastava’s score of 337 was verified, it said.NTA similarly rejected Pratibha Trivedi’s claim, saying the circulated image was a significantly altered version of her genuine OMR and her score of 38 stood. In Abhay Yadav’s case, the agency said his public claim that he had left only five questions unanswered was contradicted by the official OMR, which showed 44 unattempted questions. His score of 164 was verified.For Lakshya Singh, NTA said additional answer bubbles had been digitally shaded on the circulated image. The genuine sheet showed 54 attempts — 34 correct and 20 incorrect — with 126 questions unattempted, resulting in 116 marks. In Arya Singh’s case, it said the invigilator’s signing time had been altered from 3.45pm to 2.45pm, along with other digital changes. Her score of 167 stood.In a public notice, NTA said genuine examination documents carry barcodes, booklet and answer-sheet numbers and, in scorecards, QR codes linked to authoritative server records. “A fabricated image may deceive the eye, but it does not, and cannot, alter the record on those servers,” it said.The agency said forged OMRs or scorecards could attract action under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. The situation turned tense as clashes broke out between police and demonstrators, with security personnel attempting to stop them from crossing barricades.The protest witnessed a heavy security presence, with Delhi Police putting up multiple layers of barricading across the New Delhi district to control the movement of protesters. According to police officials, the protesters gathered at the protest site as crowds continued to swell.Visuals from the spot showed hundreds of students and young protesters carrying flags and raising slogans. Many protesters were seen attempting to move beyond the barricades, following which police personnel repeatedly pushed them back to maintain order.Police personnel were deployed in large numbers at Jantar Mantar, with a riot control vehicle also entering the protest site early on Monday. According to police officials, the protesters gathered at the protest site as crowds continued to swell.Visuals from the spot showed hundreds of students and young protesters carrying flags and raising slogans. Many protesters were seen attempting to move beyond the barricades, following which police personnel repeatedly pushed them back to maintain order.Police personnel were deployed in large numbers at Jantar Mantar, with a riot control vehicle also entering the protest site early on Monday. The vaccine is approved for people aged 4 to 60 years and can be given regardless of whether a person has previously been infected with dengue.Unlike some dengue vaccines, QDENGA does not require pre-vaccination screening, allowing eligible individuals to receive the vaccine without first being tested for past dengue infection.Takeda said the approval marks a major step in India’s fight against dengue, a mosquito-borne disease that affects millions of people every year.”Since its launch in 2022, QDENGA has been approved in 43 countries, with more than 32 million doses distributed globally. This approval marks an important step forward in strengthening dengue prevention in India,” said Mahender Nayak, Head of Intercontinental Markets at Takeda.The company said long-term data collected over seven years showed that the vaccine continues to protect against dengue infection and hospitalisation caused by all four dengue virus serotypes.The Indian approval is based on findings from Takeda’s global clinical development programme, which included 19 Phase I, II and III clinical trials involving more than 28,000 participants in countries where dengue is common as well as regions where it is not.The decision was also supported by results from the Phase III DEN-302 clinical trial conducted in India, which assessed the vaccine’s safety and immune response in people between 4 and 60 years of age.QDENGA is given as two injections of 0.5 ml, administered under the skin three months apart.Takeda said India carries one of the world’s highest dengue burdens, with all four virus serotypes circulating simultaneously in several parts of the country.”QDENGA is designed to protect against all four serotypes, regardless of prior exposure. Its approval represents an important step in strengthening India’s comprehensive approach to dengue prevention, alongside vector control, surveillance, community awareness and other public health measures,” said Goh Choo Beng, Medical Affairs Head for Takeda’s Southeast Asia and India Cluster.The company added that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends QDENGA for use in dengue-endemic regions and supports its inclusion in public immunisation programmes in high-transmission areas without requiring pre-vaccination screening.QDENGA has also received WHO prequalification, confirming that it meets international standards for quality, safety and effectiveness. This also makes the vaccine eligible for procurement by global agencies such as UNICEF and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease reported in more than 125 countries. NEW DELHI: A Kerala court Monday sentenced a 61-year-old man to death in the sensational 2025 Nenmara double murder case after finding him guilty of killing a mother and son, according to PTI.The sentence was awarded to Chenthamara, who was convicted of murdering his neighbour Sudhakaran, 56, and Sudhakaran’s 74-year-old mother Lakshmi at Pothundi near Nenmara on January 27, 2025.The quantum of punishment was decided after the sentencing hearing concluded last Tuesday before Judge Kenneth George, who heard detailed submissions from both the prosecution and the defence before reserving the verdict.The prosecution urged the court to impose the death penalty, arguing that the crime fell within the “rarest of rare” category. It told the court that Chenthamara posed a continuing threat to society and cited his remarks after conviction to argue that he had shown no remorse.The prosecution referred to his statement in court, where he said he was “not Mahatma Gandhi” and would retaliate if attacked, claiming the remarks reflected his dangerous mindset.The defence opposed the death sentence, contending that the prosecution’s case rested on circumstantial evidence rather than eyewitness testimony. It also argued that Chenthamara’s “not Mahatma Gandhi” remark was made in the context of self-defence and was not intended as a threat to kill anyone.Chenthamara had earlier been convicted in the 2019 murder of Sajitha, who was Sudhakaran’s wife. NEW DELHI: Patients with difficult-to-control high cholesterol could soon have an oral alternative to powerful cholesterol-lowering injections after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the world’s first oral PCSK9 inhibitor, a class of medicines that dramatically lowers “bad” cholesterol.The once-daily tablet, Lipfendra (enlicitide), has been approved for adults with high cholesterol, including those with an inherited condition called heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH). The drug is to be used along with diet, exercise and existing cholesterol-lowering treatment. Until now, PCSK9 inhibitors have only been available as injections administered every two or four weeks. However, the drug is not expected to be available in India immediately.”Even if a medicine is approved abroad, it cannot be marketed in India automatically. Besides patent-related restrictions, it must obtain approval from the CDSCO after following the prescribed regulatory process, which may include clinical trials as required under Indian regulations. In exceptional cases, patients may seek permission through a separate CDSCO mechanism to import limited quantities for personal treatment. However, medicines cannot simply be brought into the country by friends or relatives,” said Dr Subhash Mandal, national general secretary, Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA).The approval is significant because many high-risk patients continue to have elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol despite treatment with standard oral medicines. Indian cardiology guidelines recommend aggressive LDL reduction, with targets below 70 mg/dL for high-risk individuals and below 55 mg/dL for those at very high cardiovascular risk, but many patients fail to achieve these goals despite multiple therapies.With cardiovascular disease remaining India’s leading killer, cardiologists say better LDL cholesterol control is key to preventing heart attacks and strokes. Clinical trials involving 3,207 adults found the once-daily oral drug reduced LDL cholesterol by 56-59% over 24 weeks in patients already on maximally tolerated statins, delivering reductions comparable to injectable PCSK9 inhibitors and offering another option for those whose cholesterol remains uncontrolled despite existing therapy.However, cardiologists cautioned that the drug is unlikely to replace statins or become a first-line treatment.”PCSK9 inhibitors have so far been available only as injections every two or four weeks. The new oral therapy lowers LDL, or ‘bad’ cholesterol, by about 50-60%, making it a promising option for patients who prefer to avoid injections,” said Dr Ambuj Roy, Professor of Cardiology at AIIMS Delhi.He said the drug is likely to be used as a fourth-line therapy, after statins, ezetimibe and bempedoic acid, for patients whose LDL cholesterol remains uncontrolled or who cannot tolerate statins. “While it lowers LDL substantially, we still lack long-term evidence that it reduces heart attacks, bypass surgery, stenting or deaths. Poonch: Residents gather in the aftermath of torrential rain-triggered landslides and flash floods, at Dhara Sangla village of Surankote tehsil, in Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir. At least 12 people were killed and several others missing as rains unleashed landslides and flash floods across the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in the union territory on Sunday, causing widespread damage to public and private infrastructure including roads and houses, officials said. (PTI Photo) JAMMU: Torrential rain unleashed flash floods and landslides in Pir Panjal region of J&K’s Poonch and Rajouri districts Sunday, killing at least 14 people, leaving several missing and burying homes under walls of water, rock and mud that barrelled down mountain slopes. Officials said the toll could rise as rescuers searched for those trapped beneath debris.CM Omar Abdullah cut short his stay in New Delhi and flew to Jammu to oversee relief operations after heavy rain triggered widespread devastation in the two border districts. Police, Army, SDRF, civil administration and local volunteers fanned out across worst-hit Surankote, Haveli and Mandi in Poonch, while LG Manoj Sinha reviewed rescue efforts and directed immediate relief for affected families.Heavy rain disrupted traffic on strategic Jammu-Srinagar NH-44, prompting authorities to urge commuters to avoid vulnerable stretches. Annual Amarnath Yatra, which began July 3, and pilgrimages to Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra and Shiv Khori in Reasi were temporarily suspended after IMD forecast adverse weather for the next three days.Officials said Lower Murrah in Surankote suffered the heaviest loss, where eight members of a family were swept away. Two bodies had been found by evening while search teams continued to retrieve the remaining six. The dead included Noor Safia, 59; her sons Sajad Ahmed, 16, Haqnawaz Ahmed, 10, and Shahnawaz Ahmed, 10; Khalda Kouser, 25, and her 2-year-old son Sofian; Bano Bi, 60; and Mohammad Akram, 7.Four more died in Sangla village, while a fatality is also reported from nearby Sangalani. Nazia Kouser, 28, died in Noona Bandi, and four injured were shifted to Poonch district hospital.LG Sinha said he had spoken to senior officials and reviewed rescue operations. “Affected families have been moved to safety. All departments are on high alert,” he said. “I urge residents to stay calm and follow official updates. I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives in Rajouri and Poonch.”CM Abdullah expressed grief over the deaths, offered condolences to bereaved families and prayed for those injured. His office said he had remained in constant touch with local MLAs before flying to Jammu to personally monitor the situation.Former CM Ghulam Nabi Azad also condoled the loss of lives and widespread destruction.Rescue teams pulled three boys to safety near Peer Kho temple in Jammu after Tawi swelled suddenly. Poonch: Residents gather in the aftermath of torrential rain-triggered landslides and flash floods, at Dhara Sangla village of Surankote tehsil, in Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir. At least 12 people were killed and several others missing as rains unleashed landslides and flash floods across the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in the union territory on Sunday, causing widespread damage to public and private infrastructure including roads and houses, officials said. (PTI Photo) JAMMU: Torrential rain unleashed flash floods and landslides in Pir Panjal region of J&K’s Poonch and Rajouri districts Sunday, killing at least 14 people, leaving several missing and burying homes under walls of water, rock and mud that barrelled down mountain slopes. Officials said the toll could rise as rescuers searched for those trapped beneath debris.CM Omar Abdullah cut short his stay in New Delhi and flew to Jammu to oversee relief operations after heavy rain triggered widespread devastation in the two border districts. Police, Army, SDRF, civil administration and local volunteers fanned out across worst-hit Surankote, Haveli and Mandi in Poonch, while LG Manoj Sinha reviewed rescue efforts and directed immediate relief for affected families.Heavy rain disrupted traffic on strategic Jammu-Srinagar NH-44, prompting authorities to urge commuters to avoid vulnerable stretches. Annual Amarnath Yatra, which began July 3, and pilgrimages to Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra and Shiv Khori in Reasi were temporarily suspended after IMD forecast adverse weather for the next three days.Officials said Lower Murrah in Surankote suffered the heaviest loss, where eight members of a family were swept away. Two bodies had been found by evening while search teams continued to retrieve the remaining six. The dead included Noor Safia, 59; her sons Sajad Ahmed, 16, Haqnawaz Ahmed, 10, and Shahnawaz Ahmed, 10; Khalda Kouser, 25, and her 2-year-old son Sofian; Bano Bi, 60; and Mohammad Akram, 7.Four more died in Sangla village, while a fatality is also reported from nearby Sangalani. Nazia Kouser, 28, died in Noona Bandi, and four injured were shifted to Poonch district hospital.LG Sinha said he had spoken to senior officials and reviewed rescue operations. “Affected families have been moved to safety. All departments are on high alert,” he said. “I urge residents to stay calm and follow official updates. I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives in Rajouri and Poonch.”CM Abdullah expressed grief over the deaths, offered condolences to bereaved families and prayed for those injured. His office said he had remained in constant touch with local MLAs before flying to Jammu to personally monitor the situation.Former CM Ghulam Nabi Azad also condoled the loss of lives and widespread destruction.Rescue teams pulled three boys to safety near Peer Kho temple in Jammu after Tawi swelled suddenly. In Rajouri, Army, police and SDRF rescued two boys stranded in flooded Dhangri riverbank and nine others marooned in Thanamandi.Army’s White Knight Corps said troops “braving challenging flood conditions and swift water currents” rescued 11 civilians, including five children.Authorities sounded a flood alert across Jammu division after water levels surged in Chenab and other rivers. Gates of Salal hydroelectric project in Reasi remained open for a second day during reservoir flushing, sharply increasing discharge into Chenab. JAMMU: Three days after a 30-year-old man was shot dead in police firing, triggering protests by locals, internet services continued to remain suspended across Doda district of J&K for the third consecutive day on Sunday, disrupting communication, online transactions and other services.Officials have not yet issued any statement regarding the restoration of internet services.Locals complained that students, remote workers and job seekers are struggling with the internet shutdown, besides tourists as they can’t make online payments through apps.Sources claimed the internet speed on mobile and the broadband as well has also been restricted in Kishtwar amid the heightened security in the region.On July 16, a police team attempted to stop suspicious individuals in the Jai Valley area on suspicions of cattle smuggling. NEW DELHI: Anyone who prevents or disrupts the singing of Vande Mataram, which must now be sung in full at all state events and civil investiture ceremonies, could face up to three years in jail, a fine, or both under a Bill the govt plans to introduce in Parliament’s Monsoon session starting Monday.The Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposes to amend Section 3 of the relevant Act, which at present deals only with insults to the National Anthem, to add the national song to its ambit.“Whoever, intentionally, prevents the singing of the national anthem or the national song; or causes disturbance to any assembly engaged in such singing, shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both,” states Section 3 of the proposed bill.Where a person has already been convicted, every subsequent offence shall be punishable with a minimum jail term of one year.The statement of objects and reasons for 2026 amendment bill cites the Jan 24, 1950, meeting of the Constituent Assembly, where its president Rajendra Prasad had stated that Vande Mataram, “which played a historic role in the Indian freedom struggle, shall be honoured equally with ‘Jana-Gana-Mana’ and shall have equal status with it”.“Presently, there is no specific legal provision to prevent insults to the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’,” the statement points out while justifying the need for penal provision.Get the latest India News and Live updates. NEW DELHI: Anyone who prevents or disrupts the singing of Vande Mataram, which must now be sung in full at all state events and civil investiture ceremonies, could face up to three years in jail, a fine, or both under a Bill the govt plans to introduce in Parliament’s Monsoon session starting Monday.The Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposes to amend Section 3 of the relevant Act, which at present deals only with insults to the National Anthem, to add the national song to its ambit.“Whoever, intentionally, prevents the singing of the national anthem or the national song; or causes disturbance to any assembly engaged in such singing, shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both,” states Section 3 of the proposed bill.Where a person has already been convicted, every subsequent offence shall be punishable with a minimum jail term of one year.The statement of objects and reasons for 2026 amendment bill cites the Jan 24, 1950, meeting of the Constituent Assembly, where its president Rajendra Prasad had stated that Vande Mataram, “which played a historic role in the Indian freedom struggle, shall be honoured equally with ‘Jana-Gana-Mana’ and shall have equal status with it”.“Presently, there is no specific legal provision to prevent insults to the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’,” the statement points out while justifying the need for penal provision.Get the latest India News and Live updates. ‘Fabrications Aimed At Masking Bad Performance’ NEW DELHI: Acting swiftly on a wave of post-result complaints, National Testing Agency (NTA) has warned of strict action against fake claims after finding that several optical mark recognition (OMR) sheets submitted in support of NEET-UG result grievances were fake or AI-generated – the first time the agency detecting AI-made OMRs being used to challenge results.The complaints relate to the June 21 NEET-UG retest, held after the May test was cancelled over paper leak. NTA on Sunday warned that candidates submitting digitally-altered OMRs or scorecards could face cancellation of results, debarment from NTA-led exams and even criminal proceedings. Some candidates and parents – few even joining Cockroach Janta Party’s Jantar Mantar protest – have alleged mismatches between expected and declared scores. The allegations, spreading rapidly on social media, are also being quickly picked up by opposition parties to attack NTA, which has already faced flak over the paper leak.Faced with the challenge – which marks a technological twist to earlier disputes that involved forged documents, purportedly torn or damaged answer sheets, and allegedly fabricated scorecards – NTA warned candidates submitting digitally altered OMRs or scorecards could face action.Officials said the fabrications appeared aimed at masking “not-so-good performances” – even though the effort cannot fetch a seat in a medical college, as admissions are made by the Medical Counselling Committee under Directorate General of Health Services and the respective state counselling authorities, on the basis of the merit list issued by NTA.”NTA is closely monitoring and scrutinising all complaints. In the wake of many OMR sheets submitted for scrutiny turning out to be fake/AI generated, students and parents are advised to submit only original OMRs for scrutiny. Any fake/AI generated OMR may invite legal action against the complainant,” the agency said Saturday. Sources in the agency were furious over fabrications saying that they might taint those who have succeeded because of sheer merit.Officials said complaints verified so far had not established any discrepancy in declared results. “If any discrepancy is found during the ongoing verification, corrective measures will be taken. The total number and nature of such cases will be shared once the exercise is completed and all grievances have been addressed,” an official said.
