– NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested another alleged mastermind in the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak case, identifying her as the source of leaked Biology questions in the medical entrance examination. The accused, Manisha Gurunath Mandhare, a senior Botany teacher from Pune, Maharashtra, was arrested in Delhi after questioning by the agency. According to the CBI, Mandhare was associated with the NEET-UG 2026 examination process and had been appointed by the National Testing Agency (NTA) as an expert, giving her access to Botany and Zoology question papers, news agency ANI reported.Investigators alleged that during April 2026, she mobilised prospective NEET candidates through Manisha Wagmare of Pune, who had already been arrested on May 14. The CBI said Mandhare conducted special coaching classes for students at her Pune residence, during which she allegedly disclosed several Botany and Zoology questions and asked students to note them down in notebooks and textbooks. The agency said a majority of those questions matched the actual NEET-UG 2026 question paper conducted on May 3 (now cancelled). The arrest comes a day after the CBI said it had arrested retired chemistry professor PV Kulkarni in Latur in connection with the paper leak case. Kulkarni, who spent over three decades in academia, was associated with the NTA as part of the panel involved in setting the question paper. The investigators have been examining the role of individuals involved in preparing the questions. In the last 24 hours, the CBI said it had conducted searches at six locations across the country and seized several incriminating documents, laptops, bank statements and mobile phones. The agency said detailed analysis of the seized material is underway. So far, nine accused have been arrested in the case from Delhi, Jaipur, Gurugram, Nashik, Pune and Ahilyanagar. Five accused have already been sent to seven days’ police custody for interrogation, while two others arrested in Pune were produced before a local court and later shifted to Delhi on transit remand.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Image: PTI NEW DELHI: Congress workers on Saturday staged a protest against rising prices of petrol, diesel and milk, with party leaders arriving in bullock carts to highlight what they described as the growing burden of inflation on the public.Delhi Congress president Devendra Yadav said the protest was aimed at drawing attention to the rising cost of essential commodities under the centre.“This is our fight, and this is the fight of the people. We will fight this. This is a very serious matter, and it is being repeated again and again. They came to power in 2014, and in 12 years of rule, they have doubled inflation. Whether it is the price of fuel, vegetables, milk, LPG, or CNG, this government has continuously increased inflation and has not taken any effective steps to provide relief to the people,” Yadav said.Commenting on the hike in fuel prices, Yadav added, “people are being forced to travel by bullock carts.”Congress leaders and workers raised slogans during the demonstration, accusing the government of failing to control inflation and provide relief to consumers facing rising daily expenses. The protest followed a fuel price hike of around Rs 3 per litre announced by public sector oil marketing companies on Friday, pushing petrol and diesel prices higher across major metro cities. In Delhi, petrol prices rose to nearly Rs 97.77 per litre, while diesel climbed to Rs 90.67 per litre. The increase comes amid continued disruptions in global energy supplies linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. Global crude oil prices have surged from around per barrel before the conflict to nearly 5, although fuel prices in India had largely remained unchanged until the latest revision.Oil company executives said further hikes could not be ruled out, but any additional increase would depend on government approval and decisions regarding the timing and extent of revisions. Despite the latest rise, state-run fuel retailers are still not fully recovering costs. According to Crisil, oil marketing companies are currently losing around Rs 10 per litre on petrol and Rs 13 per litre on diesel.Fuel prices had remained largely unchanged since April 2022, except for a Rs 2 per litre excise duty cut announced by the Centre in March 2024. Meanwhile, prices of piped cooking gas have not been revised.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. NEW DELHI: Congress on Friday advised Tamil Nadu chief minister Vijay not to include the rebel AIADMK group in his government, saying he must stay true to the mandate. Speaking to news agency PTI, Congress leader Karti Chidambaram said people voted for a government that excludes both the AIADMK and the DMK. He added that if Vijay inducts AIADMK MLAs into his government, it would erode his goodwill and credibility. “Chief minister Vijay does not need the support of any splinter group of AIADMK. In fact, the mandate is for a government that excludes both the AIADMK and the DMK. And he must stay true to that mandate and ignore the splinter group of AIADMK,” the Congress leader said. “And there is no reason for him to take them into the government. If they have voluntarily supported him in the vote of confidence, so be it. But there is no reason to bring them into government. In fact, I would urge him not to bring them into government,” he added. This comes after 25 AIADMK MLAs voted in favour of Vijay’s government during the floor test following an internal rift in the party. The political turmoil within the AIADMK intensified after Shanmugam publicly criticised EPS, accusing him of weakening the organisation and leading the party towards repeated electoral defeats since the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in 2016. “The defeat faced by the AIADMK in the recently concluded Assembly elections must be discussed. We need to deliberate and analyse the reasons behind these continuous defeats,” Shanmugam had said. He also alleged that the party’s founding ideology had been diluted under the present leadership and claimed that several senior leaders and functionaries had been removed from organisational positions. The EPS-led faction initiated disciplinary action against leaders accused of violating the party whip during the recent floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Several leaders, including C V Shanmugam and C Vijayabaskar, were removed from organisational posts. At present, Palaniswami has the support of 22 MLAs, while the rebel faction led by Velumani and Shanmugam is backed by 25 AIADMK legislators. Both factions have sought disqualification of each other’s MLAs under the anti-defection law over voting during the TVK government’s floor test.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. 22.1 million excess deaths recorded globally between 2020 and 2023NEW DELHI: The Covid-19 pandemic caused an estimated 22.1 million excess deaths globally between 2020 and 2023, nearly three times higher than the seven million Covid deaths officially reported worldwide, according to the World Health Statistics 2026 report released by the World Health Organization (WHO).WHO said the pandemic wiped out nearly a decade of gains in global life expectancy and healthy life expectancy by 2021, describing it as a “setback of historic proportions” for global health systems.According to the report, global life expectancy fell by 1.8 years between 2019 and 2021, while healthy life expectancy dropped by 1.5 years during the same period, marking the sharpest reversal in recent decades. The report said excess mortality peaked in 2021 with 10.4 million additional deaths recorded globally as healthcare systems came under severe strain. Excess deaths declined to 4.9 million in 2022 and 3.3 million in 2023, though WHO cautioned that recovery remains uneven and many countries have still not returned to pre-pandemic health trajectories.WHO defines excess deaths as fatalities above what would normally be expected during a given period, including both direct Covid deaths and indirect deaths caused by disruption of healthcare services and delayed treatment. The report found men were disproportionately affected, with age-standardised excess mortality around 50% higher among men than women at the peak of the pandemic in 2021. Older adults faced the highest mortality burden, especially those aged above 85 years.WHO also highlighted major weaknesses in global mortality surveillance exposed during the pandemic. Of an estimated 61 million deaths globally in 2023, only around 21 million were officially reported to WHO with cause-of-death information, while just 12 million had medically certified ICD-coded mortality data. The agency said the pandemic severely disrupted essential health services worldwide, including vaccination programmes, tuberculosis and HIV services, and treatment for non-communicable diseases, contributing significantly to indirect deaths during the period.WHO had earlier estimated in a separate 2022 analysis that India accounted for nearly 4.74 million excess deaths during 2020-21, a figure disputed by the Indian government. The report also warned of slowing progress in universal health coverage, rising healthcare-related poverty and declining global health funding after the pandemic.About the AuthorAnuja JaiswalAnuja Jaiswal is a Senior Assistant Editor at The Times of India, with an impressive 18-year career in narrative journalism. NEW DELHI: Five months after staying its judgment accepting the controversial 100 metre-elevation definition for Aravali hills, Supreme Court on Friday said not an inch of Aravali would be allowed to be used for mining till an expert committee, to be constituted by the apex court, redefined what constitutes Aravali hills and ranges. As lawyers appearing for mining lease holders and those aspiring to get mining leases said the process for renewal and grant of leases could proceed without their finalisation, a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said, “We will not pass any order to allow resumption of mining activities in Aravalis.”“We will not allow an inch of Aravali to be used for any purpose unless we are satisfied with the new definition that will be proposed by the expert committee to be constituted by us, taking into account the names suggested by amicus curiae K Parameshwar, Union govt and parties,” CJI said.Hailing from Haryana and aware of the deleterious impact of decades of illegal mining on environment and ecology of Aravalis, considered the green lung of north-western India, CJI Kant said, “The whole problem has arisen because of the powerful mining lobby. We are very clear in our minds. No activity will be permitted without us getting the report and satisfying us about the protective umbrella that needs to be put.”On Dec 29 last year, a bench led by CJI Kant had taken suo motu cognisance of the uproarious concern expressed by environmentalists over Supreme Court’s Nov 20 judgment accepting the 100-metre elevation definition for Aravali hills. It had ordered all mining activities and grant of renewal or new mining leases in the Aravali region be stopped.Indefinitely keeping in abeyance the operation of Supreme Court’s Nov 20 judgment, the bench in its order had then said, “This stay shall remain in effect until the present proceedings reach a state of logical finality, ensuring that no irreversible administrative or ecological actions are taken based on the current framework.”The CJI-led bench had proposed to set up a committee of domain experts for an “exhaustive, holistic and scientific” examination of Aravali hills and ranges for a comprehensive definition to protect its “structural and ecological” integrity.Amicus curiae and senior advocate Parameshwar informed the court that in consultation with govt, a list of domain experts has been submitted to the court. The bench said it would soon list the matter to constitute the committee after hearing the parties.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’Not An Iota Of Truth’: PM Modi Rubbishes Report Of Restriction On Foreign Travel28 Hostages From Kuki, Naga Communities Held By Armed Groups Released In Manipur’I Am Sorry To…’: Shashi Tharoor To Skip VD Satheesan’s Swearing-In As Kerala CMNEET UG 2026 Re-Exam On June 21, Computer-Based Test Format From Next Year: Education MinisterOman To Gujarat: India Fast-Tracks Deep-Sea Gas Pipeline Project Amid Hormuz CrisisCJI Surya Kant Makes Strong Remarks During Senior Advocate HearingKerala CM-Designate Satheesan Hits Back At BJP Over IUML, Secularism DebateFormer RAW Chief Flags Security Risks Over PM Modi’s Convoy DownsizingTMC MP Derek O’Brien Slams Centre After Petrol-Diesel Hike, Targets Modi Government’Bhojshala Complex Is A Temple, Hindus Have Right To Worship’: MP High Court123Photostories10 baby girl names that mean strong in different languagesEating every two hours? In an unusual move, PM Modi took to social media to trash speculation about govt planning curbs on foreign travel, dismissing it as “totally false” and emphasising that there is “not an iota of truth in this”. Responding to a media report that said govt was considering a tax, cess or surcharge on foreign travel, Modi wrote on X, “There is no question of putting such restrictions on foreign travel. We remain committed to improving ‘Ease of Doing Business’ and ‘Ease of Living’ for our people.” The PM’s move underlined his resolve to stop any rumour that conveys an impression of panic about the state of economy from gaining ground after he made an appeal to people to conserve fuel, defer non-essential foreign trips and not buy gold for a year to save India’s forex reserves.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’Not An Iota Of Truth’: PM Modi Rubbishes Report Of Restriction On Foreign Travel28 Hostages From Kuki, Naga Communities Held By Armed Groups Released In Manipur’I Am Sorry To…’: Shashi Tharoor To Skip VD Satheesan’s Swearing-In As Kerala CMNEET UG 2026 Re-Exam On June 21, Computer-Based Test Format From Next Year: Education MinisterOman To Gujarat: India Fast-Tracks Deep-Sea Gas Pipeline Project Amid Hormuz CrisisCJI Surya Kant Makes Strong Remarks During Senior Advocate HearingKerala CM-Designate Satheesan Hits Back At BJP Over IUML, Secularism DebateFormer RAW Chief Flags Security Risks Over PM Modi’s Convoy DownsizingTMC MP Derek O’Brien Slams Centre After Petrol-Diesel Hike, Targets Modi Government’Bhojshala Complex Is A Temple, Hindus Have Right To Worship’: MP High Court123PhotostoriesKishwer Merchant recalls her father’s reaction to her interfaith marriage and age gap with Suyyash Rai; reacts to her son being trolled for wearing a skull capLauki vs Tori: Which has more nutrition for summer and 5 interesting ways to eat themAncient Kashmiri beauty secrets that are becoming popular again in IndiaFrom transparent bodies to underground lives: 5 bizarre frogs you’ve probably never heard of8 modern TV unit designs to instantly upgrade your living roomPersonality test: Mango, litchi, watermelon? Rahul Gandhi NEW DELHI: Congress’s Rahul Gandhi led the opposition in slamming the fuel price hike by saying that people are paying for the mistakes of Modi govt, as he warned about more such shocks in the coming future. Also, Congress accused Modi govt of pushing the country’s jewellery sector towards “lockdown” through PM’s appeal that people avoid gold purchases, and through sharp increase in import duty on gold and silver.Rahul said, “The Rs 3 shock has already arrived, the rest of the recovery will be done in instalments.”CPM politburo condemned the move saying the hike would impose a greater burden on the people already reeling under inflation, unemployment and stagnant wages.Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the Centre is now seeking from the US an extension of 30-day waiver to buy Russian oil.Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took a swipe at PM Modi’s call to conserve fuel, saying that the bicycle, SP’s official election symbol, was the only alternative.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’Not An Iota Of Truth’: PM Modi Rubbishes Report Of Restriction On Foreign Travel28 Hostages From Kuki, Naga Communities Held By Armed Groups Released In Manipur’I Am Sorry To…’: Shashi Tharoor To Skip VD Satheesan’s Swearing-In As Kerala CMNEET UG 2026 Re-Exam On June 21, Computer-Based Test Format From Next Year: Education MinisterOman To Gujarat: India Fast-Tracks Deep-Sea Gas Pipeline Project Amid Hormuz CrisisCJI Surya Kant Makes Strong Remarks During Senior Advocate HearingKerala CM-Designate Satheesan Hits Back At BJP Over IUML, Secularism DebateFormer RAW Chief Flags Security Risks Over PM Modi’s Convoy DownsizingTMC MP Derek O’Brien Slams Centre After Petrol-Diesel Hike, Targets Modi Government’Bhojshala Complex Is A Temple, Hindus Have Right To Worship’: MP High Court123PhotostoriesKishwer Merchant recalls her father’s reaction to her interfaith marriage and age gap with Suyyash Rai; reacts to her son being trolled for wearing a skull capLauki vs Tori: Which has more nutrition for summer and 5 interesting ways to eat themAncient Kashmiri beauty secrets that are becoming popular again in IndiaFrom transparent bodies to underground lives: 5 bizarre frogs you’ve probably never heard of8 modern TV unit designs to instantly upgrade your living roomPersonality test: Mango, litchi, watermelon? NEW DELHI: BJP on Friday pushed back at criticism over rise in fuel prices, saying India had effected the smallest increase among major economies and managed to shield consumers from global volatility since the West Asia conflict broke out before rolling out a calibrated hike.”This matters because fuel prices do not remain confined to petrol pumps. They affect transport costs, food inflation, manufacturing, logistics and household budgets. Containing fuel volatility is also about containing inflation,” BJP said, suggesting that the relatively small increase will not seriously impact inflation. The 3.2% increase in petrol price and 3.4% rise in diesel rate came even as major economies saw jump in fuel prices, BJP’s Amit Malviya said. The rise in petrol price was 44.5%, 9.7% and 19.2% in the US, Japan and the UK respectively, he said, listing the higher rise in other nations as well. . NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday took exception to “petty politicians” of the Shiv Sena (UBT) accusing the court of delaying adjudication of petitions challenging non-disqualification of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Election Commission’s decision to declare them as the real ‘Shiv Sena’ and said it is the UBT camp’s counsel who had sought adjournment many a time.Advocate Rohit Sharma, acting as per the instructions in the cause-list of the SC, requested a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi to fix a date for final hearing on the three-year-old petition by Uddhav Thackeray against Eknath Shinde, who rebelled with other Sena legislators and formed a govt with the BJP, as well as a two-year-old petition challenging the Speaker’s order rejecting petitions seeking disqualification of the rebel Sena MLAs.Though the bench accepted Sharma’s request and assured that the “Shiv Sena matters” would be taken up for final hearing soon, the CJI said, “Stop your people from going to the media and accuse the SC of delaying adjudication of the petitions. On one hand you seek adjournment of hearing and on the other you accuse the SC of delay. These irresponsible statements should not be made.”“I am issuing a warning. I am not going to tolerate these things. Why do these petty politicians keep making accusations against SC,” the CJI asked. Senior advocate Devadatt Kamat said he was ready to argue the case on Friday itself or any day suitable to the court. The CJI said, “The court often sits much beyond 4 pm to hear cases. It is not as if we are sitting idle. All cases cannot be heard in a single day.” Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi said these comments, be it from any party, should not have been made as the courts are working beyond the scheduled court time.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’Not An Iota Of Truth’: PM Modi Rubbishes Report Of Restriction On Foreign Travel28 Hostages From Kuki, Naga Communities Held By Armed Groups Released In Manipur’I Am Sorry To…’: Shashi Tharoor To Skip VD Satheesan’s Swearing-In As Kerala CMNEET UG 2026 Re-Exam On June 21, Computer-Based Test Format From Next Year: Education MinisterOman To Gujarat: India Fast-Tracks Deep-Sea Gas Pipeline Project Amid Hormuz CrisisCJI Surya Kant Makes Strong Remarks During Senior Advocate HearingKerala CM-Designate Satheesan Hits Back At BJP Over IUML, Secularism DebateFormer RAW Chief Flags Security Risks Over PM Modi’s Convoy DownsizingTMC MP Derek O’Brien Slams Centre After Petrol-Diesel Hike, Targets Modi Government’Bhojshala Complex Is A Temple, Hindus Have Right To Worship’: MP High Court123PhotostoriesKishwer Merchant recalls her father’s reaction to her interfaith marriage and age gap with Suyyash Rai; reacts to her son being trolled for wearing a skull capLauki vs Tori: Which has more nutrition for summer and 5 interesting ways to eat themAncient Kashmiri beauty secrets that are becoming popular again in IndiaFrom transparent bodies to underground lives: 5 bizarre frogs you’ve probably never heard of8 modern TV unit designs to instantly upgrade your living roomPersonality test: Mango, litchi, watermelon? SRINAGAR: BJP Friday staged a protest outside J&K CM Omar Abdullah’s residence, demanding prohibition of liquor in Kashmir Valley. The party said it would launch protests from Qazigund town in south Kashmir to Karnah area on Line of Control in north Kashmir in the second phase of protests in near future if the National Conference govt failed to act.“BJP is against all kinds of drugs and alcohol consumption. The NC govt wants to push J&K’s youth toward alcohol consumption,” BJP’s Altaf Thakur told reporters outside the CM’s residence. “The way NC functionaries are making statements in support of liquor sale and consumption is not acceptable. Kashmir is the land of sages and we will not allow liquor shops in this land,” he said.BJP’s general secretary Anwar Khan, who also participated in the protest, said if the CM and NC president Farooq Abdullah were concerned about revenue generated through liquor sales, BJP workers would “sit outside mosques and beg for money” for the ruling party, but would not allow anyone to “play with the future of the youth”.Many BJP workers also questioned LG Manoj Sinha’s 100-day drive against drugs, wondering why liquor sale is not included in it.The police, however, swiftly acted against protesters and pushed them away from the CM’s residence.BJP spokesperson Sajid Yousuf Shah said at least 10 protesters, including himself, were detained by police but let off after an hour.On Sunday, CM Abdullah had rejected calls for prohibition in J&K, dismissing the opposition People’s Democratic Party’s argument that allowing liquor sales amounted to encouraging alcohol consumption.Following him, Farooq said his father, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, had refused to impose such a ban in 1977 as it generated substantial revenue for the UT (which was then a state). “Even today, if the Govt of India compensates us (for the revenue loss), I am sure (J&K) govt will ban liquor,” he had said. While Farooq claimed he did not drink, he added that banning liquor in J&K won’t stop tipplers from smuggling it from outside.LG Manoj Sinha had launched a 100-day drive against drugs on April 11, which led to demands from various quarters that it should be extended to liquor sales.NC spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar, meanwhile, said it was the PDP-BJP govt that pushed through an excise policy in 2017 mandating liquor shops in “unserved and underserved areas.”End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’Not An Iota Of Truth’: PM Modi Rubbishes Report Of Restriction On Foreign Travel28 Hostages From Kuki, Naga Communities Held By Armed Groups Released In Manipur’I Am Sorry To…’: Shashi Tharoor To Skip VD Satheesan’s Swearing-In As Kerala CMNEET UG 2026 Re-Exam On June 21, Computer-Based Test Format From Next Year: Education MinisterOman To Gujarat: India Fast-Tracks Deep-Sea Gas Pipeline Project Amid Hormuz CrisisCJI Surya Kant Makes Strong Remarks During Senior Advocate HearingKerala CM-Designate Satheesan Hits Back At BJP Over IUML, Secularism DebateFormer RAW Chief Flags Security Risks Over PM Modi’s Convoy DownsizingTMC MP Derek O’Brien Slams Centre After Petrol-Diesel Hike, Targets Modi Government’Bhojshala Complex Is A Temple, Hindus Have Right To Worship’: MP High Court123PhotostoriesKishwer Merchant recalls her father’s reaction to her interfaith marriage and age gap with Suyyash Rai; reacts to her son being trolled for wearing a skull capLauki vs Tori: Which has more nutrition for summer and 5 interesting ways to eat themAncient Kashmiri beauty secrets that are becoming popular again in IndiaFrom transparent bodies to underground lives: 5 bizarre frogs you’ve probably never heard of8 modern TV unit designs to instantly upgrade your living roomPersonality test: Mango, litchi, watermelon? NEW DELHI: Monsoon is likely to arrive in Kerala on May 26, IMD said Friday, forecasting an early start to the rainy season in India. Monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1, give or take seven days.“This year, the southwest (summer) monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 26 with a model error of ± 4 days,” the met department said, noting that its operational forecasts of the date of onset over Kerala during the past 21 years (2005-2025) were proved to be correct except in 2015. Early or late arrival has no bearing on overall monsoon performance or distribution.Last year, monsoon arrived over Kerala eight days in advance, on May 24.IMD has forecast ‘below normal’ rains this year amid El Nino riskThe onset of monsoon in Kerala marks the arrival of the southwest monsoon in the Indian mainland. It is an important indicator characterising the transition from hot and dry conditions to the rainy season. The met department has already predicted ‘below normal’ monsoon rainfall this year over many parts of the country amid the growing risk of El Nino, which is invariably associated with harsher summer and weaker monsoon in south Asia.Meanwhile, IMD on Friday said conditions were favourable for the advance of southwest monsoon over parts of south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar Islands in the next 24 hours.IMD has been issuing operational forecasts for the date of monsoon onset over Kerala from 2005 onwards, using an indigenously developed statistical model with a model error of ± 4 days. The six predictors used in the models are: minimum temperatures over north-west India, pre-monsoon rainfall peak over south Peninsula, outgoing long wave radiation (OLR) over south China Sea, lower tropospheric zonal wind over equatorial southeast Indian Ocean, outgoing long wave Radiation (OLR) over southwest Pacific Ocean, and lower tropospheric zonal wind over equatorial northeast Indian Ocean.About the AuthorVishwa MohanVishwa Mohan is Senior Editor at The Times of India. NEW DELHI: Noting that the Madhya Pradesh HC order declaring the disputed Bhojshala complex a temple only validated the fears and concerns they had raised since the 2019 Ayodhya verdict, the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH) on Friday released a report arguing that Supreme Court’s interpretation of Places of Worship Act revealed how “deeply majoritarian politics has penetrated legal validation”.Speaking at the programme attended by senior lawyers, legal experts, former judges, researchers, and intellectuals, JUH president Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani observed that disputes did not end with the Babri Masjid issue; rather, new controversies relating to Gyanvapi, Mathura Eidgah, Kamal Maula Mosque, and other religious sites were now being raised, reopening old wounds. The report titled ‘A critical analysis of Babri Masjid judgement and the Case of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act 1991’ provides a detailed analysis of major SC judgments claiming that certain judicial interpretations weakened constitutional principles relating to the protection of religious places. In particular, the report discusses the far-reaching implications of observations made in the Ismail Faruqui case, wherein a mosque was held not to be an essential part of Islamic practice. “As the judiciary increasingly accommodates Hindutva majoritarian-ism, Muslim sacred spaces have become legally vulnerable, culturally contested, and politically targeted,” it said. The report said Places of Worship Act was designed to freeze the religious character of worship sites as they existed on Aug 15, 1947. “Yet recent court rulings have interpreted the Act so narrowly that fresh claims against mosques in Va-ranasi, Mathura, and elsewhere are now proceeding,” it said.“The arguments deployed in those cases — concerning essential practices, belief, archaeological evidence, and civilisational memory — are now being recycled in ongoing litigation involving the Gyanvapi Mosque in Sambhal, the Shahi Eidgah at Mathura, and others,” the report stated. It further recommended that “communal politics and historical claims should not be allowed to become instruments for legal disputes”.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’Not An Iota Of Truth’: PM Modi Rubbishes Report Of Restriction On Foreign Travel28 Hostages From Kuki, Naga Communities Held By Armed Groups Released In Manipur’I Am Sorry To…’: Shashi Tharoor To Skip VD Satheesan’s Swearing-In As Kerala CMNEET UG 2026 Re-Exam On June 21, Computer-Based Test Format From Next Year: Education MinisterOman To Gujarat: India Fast-Tracks Deep-Sea Gas Pipeline Project Amid Hormuz CrisisCJI Surya Kant Makes Strong Remarks During Senior Advocate HearingKerala CM-Designate Satheesan Hits Back At BJP Over IUML, Secularism DebateFormer RAW Chief Flags Security Risks Over PM Modi’s Convoy DownsizingTMC MP Derek O’Brien Slams Centre After Petrol-Diesel Hike, Targets Modi Government’Bhojshala Complex Is A Temple, Hindus Have Right To Worship’: MP High Court123PhotostoriesKishwer Merchant recalls her father’s reaction to her interfaith marriage and age gap with Suyyash Rai; reacts to her son being trolled for wearing a skull capLauki vs Tori: Which has more nutrition for summer and 5 interesting ways to eat themAncient Kashmiri beauty secrets that are becoming popular again in IndiaFrom transparent bodies to underground lives: 5 bizarre frogs you’ve probably never heard of8 modern TV unit designs to instantly upgrade your living roomPersonality test: Mango, litchi, watermelon?
