Manipur: Two Assam Rifles personnel killed in ambush in Ukhrul IMPHAL: Two Assam Rifles personnel were killed in an ambush by suspected militants on NH-202 in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, predominantly inhabited by Tangkhul Naga, on Monday afternoon.Security forces rushed to the site of attack, and there was an exchange of fire. Further operations are under way to neutralise the militants, police said in the statement.Sources said two AR personnel, identified as Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and constable CM Singh, who was reportedly driving the vehicle at the time of the attack, were critically injured in the ambush. Both later succumbed to their injuries.The incident took place around 2pm when personnel of 40 Assam Rifles were travelling to their battalion headquarters at Shangshak from Ukhrul headquarters.Breakaway group behind ambush, says NSCN(IM)Monday’s attack on Assam Rifles personnel, about 17 km from Ukhrul district headquarters, marks the second major strike on Assam Rifles personnel since the outbreak of the Manipur ethnic conflict in May 2023, following the Sept 2025 assault in Nambol in Bishnupur district that killed two and injured five other personnel.According to local villagers, heavy gunfire and multiple explosions rocked the area for nearly two hours, sending panic through nearby villages. The circumstances surrounding the ambush and the identity of the attackers were not immediately known.No militant group has claimed responsibility, and the Assam Rifles has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Representational image NEW DELHI: A report by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), which recommended rollout of E20, had concluded that using the fuel in E10-compliant vehicles showed deterioration in rubber parts of fuel-system components, such as hoses, gaskets, seals and O-rings.The study, not yet made public, has been a reference point for govt and vehicle makers. It had said these parts “may need replacement”. On all vehicles tested, E20 was found to have no adverse impact on metallic components, and emissions with E20 were within legislative limits on E10-compatible vehicles.The study’s findings on the impact of E20 fuel on E10 vehicles also stated that during “4-wheeler engine durability test”, the performance of one BS-IV engine was acceptable with E20, but “issue was observed with BS-VI turbo charged engine after 265 hours of durability”.The part of the study that dealt with “engine durability” stated that two four-wheeler vehicle manufacturers, or OEMs, carried out the test. While for one OEM, no issue was observed for engine durability after 400 hours of testing and performance was acceptable with E20 fuel, in the case of the other OEM, “thermomechanical failure of exhaust valve was observed in the engine(s) tested cumulatively for 809 hours”.People aware of the findings said there could be other reasons for thermomechanical failure of the exhaust valve in the case of the second OEM. However, experts involved in vehicle testing said that generally engine durability tests are carried out for 2,000 hours.As per the report, engine durability tests conducted by three two-wheeler manufacturers found no issue, and the “performance is acceptable with E20 fuel”.It had also concluded that fuel consumption of vehicles with E20 increased 2-6% compared to E10. One J&K resident was also shot dead.NIA said the second chargesheet has details of the role played by Saeed, with supporting evidence compiled by it based “on meticulous and scientific investigation and on-ground examination”.NIA finds digital trail to LeT in Pahalgam attackThe second NIA chargesheet came almost seven months after NIA filed the original chargesheet naming six people, including Pakistani terror handler and Hafiz Saeed’s close aide Sajid Jatt.Saeed, who has in the past figured in multiple terror chargesheets, including in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks case, was Monday charged in the Pahalgam case both in his individual capacity and as chief of LeT and its proxy The Resistance Front (TRF).Both LeT and TRF are proscribed as “terrorist” outfits in India under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. As per Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, Saeed shall face trial in absentia, enabling courts to pronounce judgment.Sources said Saeed – in line with instructions given by Pakistani state actors and the ISI – had told Jatt to carry out a major attack in Pahalgam, targeted against security forces or tourists.There were specific directions to engage only Pakistani terrorists to execute the attack, while keeping involvement of local Kashmiris minimal and strictly on a need-to-know basis.This was done to keep the plot tightly under wraps and retain the ‘surprise’ element so as to maximise casualties, said a source.NIA unearthed irrefutable evidence, including chats, mobile data analysis and GPS logs, on the involvement of top LeT brass in planning as well as successful execution of the Pahalgam attack.Saeed has been charged under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and UAPA. NIA also invoked the penal section against the accused for waging war against India and hatching a conspiracy from across the border in the chargesheet.In its earlier chargesheet filed on Dec 15, 2025, NIA had named Pakistani handler terrorist Jatt as an accused, along with three terrorists killed by security forces during Operation Mahadev in July 2025, as well as two arrested accused. Political parties and Sikh bodies in Punjab have strongly condemned the removal of Diljit Dosanjh’s film “Satluj” from ZEE5 NEW DELHI: Govt invoked security grounds to ask ZEE5 to pull down ‘Satluj’ after its makers released the movie ‘Punjab 95′ under the new name on the OTT platform as the film’s theatrical release remained in limbo for nearly three years due to censor’s objections to parts of its content.’Satluj’ features actor Diljit Dosanjh playing human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra who uncovered rights abuses allegedly by Punjab Police in its fight against terrorism before disappearing in 1995. Four police personnel were later convicted for his abduction and murder.The movie-makers did not come back to the censor board, and with content regulations for OTT more relaxed than big screen and TV, they released it with a new name on ZEE5, where it remained available for two days.Using its powers, govt asked the platform to remove it due to security reasons, sources said.The decade between mid-80s and mid-90s was a rather turbulent and volatile period in Punjab, as pro-Khalistan terror groups ran amok before being reined in and neutralised by police, who were accused of numerous excesses in their operations.The movie-makers’ decision to release the movie on OTT has again brought to fore the issue of regulation in the new mode of entertainment and information, an issue flagged by a parliamentary standing committee headed by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey in its report.The committee has made recommendations, including amendments in existing laws, to deal with the issue.’Encounter’ victims kin oppose film banThe ban on ‘Satluj’has reopened painful memories for families who lost loved ones, still listed as missing. NEW DELHI: With the maiden BJP govt in Bengal organising a grand event in Kolkata to commemorate Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary, PM Narendra Modi lauded his efforts to ensure that the state became a part of India during Partition and said the seed of the idea he planted is now flourishing everywhere.In a virtual address, he said “conspiracies” were devised at that time to separate the region of Bengal from the country. “During this critical time, Mookerjee stood firm against these conspiracies. He mobilised public support, engaged in political struggles, and ensured that Bengal remained an integral part of the nation,” he said.Modi noted that Mookerjee had then stated – “Congress partitioned the country, and I partitioned Pakistan.” The M A Jinnah-led Muslim League had then lobbied to get entire Bengal in Pakistan.Modi also praised Mookerjee’s vision as industry minister in the first govt headed by Jawaharlal Nehru before he quit due to his increasing differences with the first PM. NEW DELHI: With the maiden BJP govt in Bengal organising a grand event in Kolkata to commemorate Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary, PM Narendra Modi lauded his efforts to ensure that the state became a part of India during Partition and said the seed of the idea he planted is now flourishing everywhere.In a virtual address, he said “conspiracies” were devised at that time to separate the region of Bengal from the country. “During this critical time, Mookerjee stood firm against these conspiracies. He mobilised public support, engaged in political struggles, and ensured that Bengal remained an integral part of the nation,” he said.Modi noted that Mookerjee had then stated – “Congress partitioned the country, and I partitioned Pakistan.” The M A Jinnah-led Muslim League had then lobbied to get entire Bengal in Pakistan.Modi also praised Mookerjee’s vision as industry minister in the first govt headed by Jawaharlal Nehru before he quit due to his increasing differences with the first PM. Exploring his economic foresight as industry minister, Modi catalogued the establishment of monumental entities like Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, Sindri Fertilizer Plant, Damodar Valley Corporation and IFCI. “He laid the foundation for such national institutions which became India’s economic strength for decades to come,” the PM said.Modi said many ideas lose their sheen with time but the ideological movement that Mookerjee started, when there was little space for a different worldview in the Congress-dominated politics, is continuing to expand at a fast pace.”When govt is formed by those having the resolve of nation first, then national heroes are recognised and efforts made to implement their vision,” he said, asserting that it is a matter of double happiness for Bengal as the event is being held in the state, the birthplace of Mookerjee.”Our govt is proud that we fulfilled his dream by removing Article 370 (in J&K),” he said, adding that Mookerjee wanted all regions and states being equal while holding their distinct identity and believed in the recognition of Indian languages. “He fiercely opposed the talk of two constitutions, two PMs, and two flags in the country,” the PM said. Representational image NEW DELHI: In a move that could bring relief to people in transferable jobs and on contractual assignments, road transport ministry has proposed to extend to three years the period for which a vehicle can be kept in another state without re-registration. The proposal – part of draft amendments to Motor Vehicles Act for “ease of living” – was presented to an informal Group of Ministers (iGoM) last week.At present, Section 47 of the law mandates that if a vehicle registered in one state remains in another for more than a year, its owner must apply for fresh registration in the new state.”The proposal aims at helping people who plan to come back to their home state after 2-3 years of completing an assignment. Re-registration of a vehicle in a new state and revoking it after returning to home state is a hassle for people,” said an official.The move will complement the Bharat (BH) series registration, which allows eligible car owners to drive across all states and UTs without re-registration.Abhay Damle, a former joint secretary (transport), pointed out that it addresses only part of the problem. “The larger issue is the wide disparity in road tax across states.””The solution lies in harmonising road tax rates across states, supported by a seamless transfer process through the Vahan portal and a transparent mechanism for pro-rata transfer of road tax between states,” he said.In another move, the ministry has proposed a new section in the law mandating states to appoint adjudicating authorities for compounding penalties and establish electronic means within six months. Representational image SRINAGAR/JAMMU: J&K police searched Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan’s office in Jammu and a publisher’s office in Noida as investigators widened Monday a probe into two books allegedly carrying separatist and anti-national content that were supplied to govt school libraries, sharpening a political row over lapses in scrutiny while triggering a debate over censorship.Counter-intelligence teams questioned Samagra Shiksha director and other officials at Channi Himmat on Jammu’s outskirts, while another team searched a publisher’s office in Noida. Police made no arrests and issued no official statement.Officials said searches were aimed at finding how the two books reached school libraries before content scrutiny was completed.According to an education official, four sub-committees of academicians and experts were set up to select books after library grants were received under Centre’s Samagra Shiksha scheme. They shortlisted 463 titles submitted by 364 publishers.Department scrutiny later flagged “highly inappropriate content” in “Personalities and Legends of J&K” by Hilal Ahmad and Santosh Meena, published by Jammu-based Oberoi Book Service, and “Great Personalities of Jammu and Kashmir” by Sushant Giri, published by New Delhi-based Anurag Prakashan.By then, 123 copies of the first book had reached schools in Jammu, Ramban and Udhampur, while 128 copies of the second had been supplied to schools in Jammu and Baramulla before both were withdrawn.LG Manoj Sinha’s administration withdrew both books from school libraries on July 4, suspended eight school education officials and ordered a high-level inquiry. CID registered an FIR under various sections of BNS and UAPA.BJP, Congress and other parties flagged alleged lapses. J&K Peoples’ Forum alleged “Personalities and Legends…” used terms such as “India-occupied Kashmir” and described banned JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat as “Shaheed-e-Azam”. Bhat was hanged in Tihar jail on Feb 11, 1984, after conviction for killing a CID inspector.Pushing back against calls for censorship, Kashmir’s chief cleric and Hurriyat Conference chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said banning books, ideas or organisations “doesn’t work”.“Kashmiris are proud of their civilizational legacy… You cannot ban everything written before 2019,” he said Monday. “I don’t think banning books works. Representational image JAMMU: Security forces launched a search operation early Monday after a suspected Pakistani drone was spotted hovering above a couple of forward villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in J&K’s Rajouri district the previous night, official sources said.Blinking lights were seen over the villages of Mahadev Menka and Beripattan in Rajouri’s Sunderbani sector late Sunday. The suspected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) lingered briefly in the Indian airspace before returning towards Pakistan, official sources said.Security forces cordoned off the area and initiated a search operation at dawn to check whether the UAV had dropped any payloads (narcotics or weapons), but did not find anything suspicious, official sources said.On June 8, Army personnel had opened fire upon spotting a Pak drone over forward posts along the LoC in Balakote area of Poonch’s Mendhar sector, forcing the UAV to return towards Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.Get the latest India news and live updates. Representational image JAMMU: Security forces launched a search operation early Monday after a suspected Pakistani drone was spotted hovering above a couple of forward villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in J&K’s Rajouri district the previous night, official sources said.Blinking lights were seen over the villages of Mahadev Menka and Beripattan in Rajouri’s Sunderbani sector late Sunday. The suspected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) lingered briefly in the Indian airspace before returning towards Pakistan, official sources said.Security forces cordoned off the area and initiated a search operation at dawn to check whether the UAV had dropped any payloads (narcotics or weapons), but did not find anything suspicious, official sources said.On June 8, Army personnel had opened fire upon spotting a Pak drone over forward posts along the LoC in Balakote area of Poonch’s Mendhar sector, forcing the UAV to return towards Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.Get the latest India news and live updates. Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary addresses a press conference, in Jammu. (PTI Photo) SRINAGAR: The National Conference (NC) on Monday announced that its MLAs and MPs will stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 20, the first day of Monsoon Session of Parliament, to press for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.J&K’s deputy CM Surinder Choudhary said that ahead of the protest, his party NC will organize public rallies in Srinagar on July 11 and in Jammu on July 12. “CM Omar Abdullah will address these rallies and will argue for restoration of statehood,” he said.Choudhary said PM Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah had assured the people of J&K that statehood would be restored after the state Assembly polls. He said despite the formation of the elected government 18 months ago, the promise remained unfulfilled.“The absence of statehood is affecting employment generation and development funding. Jammu and Kashmir’s expenditure and administrative responsibilities remained comparable to those of a state, but its financial allocation is at par with that of a union territory. It is being treated at par with Ladakh UT,” he said.Choudhary said all political parties committed to the interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir should join the NC on July 20.J&K lost its statehood on Aug 5, 2019, when Centre abrogated Article 370, revoked the region’s special constitutional status and bifurcated the former state into two UTs, J&K and Ladakh. Since then, parties across Kashmir’s political spectrum, including NC and PDP, have repeatedly demanded restoration of statehood. Centre had publicly committed to restoring statehood at an appropriate stage but given no timeline.On June 3, NC announced a one-day protest at Jantar Mantar on the issue. Later, on June 11, Omar met the prime minister in New Delhi raising the issue of statehood with him.But after the meeting, Omar said there has been no change in his plan to hold a protest in New Delhi. “Commitments have been made in the Supreme Court, Parliament and at various public functions to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. NEW DELHI: Alok Kumar Mittal, a 1993 batch IPS officer of Haryana cadre, was on Monday named as director general of the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPRD). He is presently serving in the cadre as DG, Prisons.Other appointments announced in the Central police organisations include that of Amit Garg, IPS (Andhra Pradesh: 1993), as director, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). He shall move from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), where he is serving as director. Sujeet Pandey, IPS (UP: 1994) will replace him in SVPNPA. Mittal, who will head BPRD till June 2029 or till his next posting, has in the past served in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and led investigations into key terror cases. He also held several posts in Haryana police, as ADG, CID; DG, Prisons; and managing director, Haryana Police Housing Corporation. He joins BPRD at a time when it is overseeing smooth implementation of the three criminal laws across all the states and Union territories. Garg, who will replace incumbent Alok Ranjan, will serve as NCRB chief till his retirement on Oct 31, 2027 or until further orders, whichever is earlier. NEW DELHI: Following a high-level meeting in Ayodhya, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust released details of its finances, saying that out of Rs 3,264 crore, Rs 2,370 crore had been spent on temple construction and capital expenditure, while Rs 391 crore from devotees’ offerings had been used for operational expenses. It said the remaining funds continue to remain in bank accounts. The trust further revealed that silver articles donated by devotees had been melted into bars. This comes after trust accepted the resignations of its general secretary, Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra and announced a series of measures aimed at improving transparency following the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.The Trust further said devotees who donated cash or gifts could personally verify the utilisation of their offerings by visiting Ayodhya after taking an appointment with Trust officials.The statement comes weeks after allegations surfaced that crores of rupees in donations were being siphoned off during the counting process, prompting the Uttar Pradesh government to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT).Meanwhile, Trust treasurer Govind Giri said that 3-member committee will be constituted to interview and suggest names for CEO of Ram Temple Trust.Trust shares financial detailsIn its statement, the Trust said it had received a total of Rs 3,264 crore through the Nidhi Samarpan Abhiyan and corpus donations since its formation in 2020.It said Rs 2,370 crore had been utilised for construction and capital expenditure.The Trust further stated that between its inception and March 31, 2026, it had received Rs 582 crore in offerings from devotees, of which Rs 391 crore had been spent on operational expenses.”The remaining amounts are available in bank accounts. All this financial information has been presented by the Trust to the media from time to time,” the statement said.Devotees can verify their donationsThe Trust also sought to reassure devotees about gifts made to the temple.It said 2,916 gifts in kind had been received from devotees and that every item had been entered into a register with details of the donor and date of receipt.According to the Trust, these items undergo annual physical verification by an independent chartered accountancy firm acting as the internal auditor.It added that devotees wishing to verify the utilisation of their offerings could fix an appointment with Trust officials, visit Ayodhya and inspect the records.The Trust also said silver articles donated by devotees had been melted into bars at the Government Mint. It said photographs, weight records and Mint certificates regarding purity and quantity were available for verification.Trust accepts resignations, removes special inviteeThe Trust said it was deeply saddened by the alleged irregularities in the donation counting process.It stated that after receiving preliminary information, it had itself requested the Uttar Pradesh government to conduct an impartial investigation, following which an SIT was constituted.The Trust said eight people were named in the SIT’s preliminary report, following which it filed a complaint and the accused were arrested.It reiterated that anyone found guilty should face the strictest legal action.Following the SIT’s preliminary findings, the Trust accepted the resignations of Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra, both of whom stepped down on moral grounds.It also decided to remove Gopal Nagarakatte from the list of special invitee members.The Trust added that trustee Krishna Mohan would discharge the duties of general secretary in an acting capacity until a permanent appointment is made.It also announced the formation of a three-member committee to recommend a suitable Chief Executive Officer to strengthen the temple’s administration.Trust says allegations should be backed by evidenceThe Trust said it intended to strengthen its management systems and would implement reforms recommended by the SIT as well as suggestions from independent experts to make temple administration more transparent and efficient.It also appealed to individuals, organisations and journalists to submit any evidence of wrongdoing directly to the SIT or investigating agencies instead of making public allegations.”The Trust firmly believes that the investigative agencies will definitely take action based on the evidence,” it said.The Trust further alleged that some people were attempting to use the controversy to weaken the Ram Temple and spread confusion, while asserting that the number of devotees visiting the temple had remained unaffected despite the allegations.What was alleged earlier?The Trust’s statement comes against the backdrop of an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the counting of donations at the Ram Temple.According to sources familiar with the investigation, the SIT is probing allegations that Rs 6 lakh to Rs 8 lakh may have been siphoned off daily from donation collections before the alleged fraud came to light. The estimate was based on changes in daily bank deposits before and after the case surfaced.Investigators have arrested eight accused, most of whom were involved in counting donations. Police have recovered cash, foreign currency, jewellery, silver ornaments and other valuables from the accused during the investigation.The SIT is also examining allegations relating to recruitment of counting staff, handling of jewellery donations, CCTV footage and possible procedural lapses in the counting and storage of offerings.The Uttar Pradesh government has extended the SIT’s deadline until July 15 to submit its final report. Ram Temple, Trust Treasurer Govind Dev Giri (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust Treasurer Govind Dev Giri on Monday defended former general secretary Champat Rai following his resignation over the Ram temple donation theft case, saying Rai remained “untainted” in his eyes and describing his decision to step down as voluntary and driven by moral responsibility.The trust also accepted the resignations of general secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra following the SIT’s preliminary report into the alleged donation theft. Krishna Mohan has been given additional charge as interim general secretary.Addressing a press conference in Ayodhya, Giri said Rai had dedicated his life to the Ram temple movement and chose to resign to ensure a fair investigation.”In these circumstances, we accepted the resignation. At the same time, we expressed our appreciation for the services rendered by Champat Rai Ji. It was an extraordinary decision that he took voluntarily. He has worked for the construction of the Ram Temple for many years, from the very beginning, when there was not even any activity of this kind, until today. While acknowledging and respecting all the work he has done, we also accepted his resignation in view of the generosity he showed in taking this decision under the present circumstances.”Giri also made it clear that Rai’s resignation did not diminish his personal regard for the veteran VHP leader.”He is untainted in my eyes. He has lived a life of sacrifice for the Ram temple movement,” Giri said.Explaining why the trust accepted the resignations, Giri said the decision was mandated by the trust’s constitution after legal advice from senior jurist K Parasaran.”In this situation, it became necessary for us to act because of the atmosphere that has been created. Our General Secretary, Champat Rai, and trustee Anil Mishra submitted their resignations. As the General Secretary of the Trust, Champat Rai Ji felt pained. He believed that until the entire matter is resolved properly, the accused are caught, and they receive appropriate punishment, it would not be appropriate for them to continue in their positions. With this thought, he voluntarily submitted his resignation. Whether to accept or reject the resignation was not in our hands. K. Parasaran raised an important point. He explained that, according to the Constitution of the Trust, once a resignation is submitted, it is deemed to have been accepted automatically. Therefore, we had no other option. He read out the relevant clauses of the Trust Constitution and explained to us that once the resignation had been submitted, accepting or rejecting it was no longer a matter of our discretion. We had to treat the resignation as accepted.”Krishna Mohan has been entrusted with the responsibilities of interim general secretary until a permanent appointment is made.”We remain committed to ensuring the smooth functioning of all future arrangements. The responsibility of serving as the interim General Secretary has been entrusted to Shri Krishna Mohan Ji, who is seated with me. He will choose a few colleagues to assist him and, together with them, will carry out these responsibilities. Given his approach and experience, we are confident that he will discharge these duties with great efficiency.”The trust also announced the formation of a three-member committee to recommend candidates for the post of general secretary. The panel comprises retired Justice Pradeep Kohli, retired Lieutenant General Vishnukant Chaturvedi and Suresh Havare, a former administrator of the Shirdi Sai Baba Trust.”It has been decided that, while the Board of Trustees will be fully constituted, a three-member committee has been appointed to present names to us. This committee comprises retired Justice Pradeep Kohli, retired Lieutenant General Vishnukant Chaturvedi, and Suresh ji Havare, who successfully managed the Shirdi institution for ten years. We have finalised this three-member committee; they will interview various candidates and submit names to us, from which we will make the final selection.”On the theft investigation, Giri said the trust wanted strict action against everyone involved while cautioning people against what he described as misinformation surrounding the case.”One thing we want to state clearly is that theft is theft. The investigation into the incident is being carried out by the SIT, and it is the responsibility of the authorities to identify those responsible. We want to caution the public against such false narratives.”The trust said Rs 3,264 crore had been received through the fund contribution campaign and corpus donations, of which Rs 2,370 crore had been spent on construction and capital expenditure. It also said Rs 582 crore had been received as offerings till March 31, 2026, with Rs 391 crore utilised for operational expenses and the remaining funds retained in bank accounts.According to the trust, 2,926 offerings in kind made by devotees have been recorded in a register, undergo annual physical verification by an independent chartered accountancy firm and can be verified by devotees through prior appointment with trust officials in Ayodhya.Congress attacks trust, seeks wider probeReacting to the trust’s decision, Congress leader Pawan Khera said the acceptance of the resignations amounted to an acknowledgment of the allegations surrounding the Ram temple donation theft case.”By accepting the resignations of Champat Rai and Anil Mishra, the Ram Mandir Trust has effectively accepted that ‘Chanda Chori’ reports that have horrified the nation for the past month are indeed true,” Khera said in a post on X.Calling the resignations “welcome”, Khera said they were insufficient and demanded a complete overhaul of the trust.”It is welcome news that the sacred Mandir of Lord Ram is finally being rid of those who have been looting it for years. But that is nowhere near enough,” he said.Khera also questioned the role of the trust’s leadership, saying the treasurer could not “wash his hands of responsibility”, and criticised the appointment of Krishna Mohan as interim general secretary.”The country does not need piecemeal resignations. It deserves a complete dissolution and overhaul of the Trust, and every one of its members must face an independent, Supreme Court-supervised investigation,” he said.The Congress leader further demanded accountability from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and the RSS and VHP.”Accountability should also not end with the Trust. Ram Temple, Trust Treasurer Govind Dev Giri (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust Treasurer Govind Dev Giri on Monday defended former general secretary Champat Rai following his resignation over the Ram temple donation theft case, saying Rai remained “untainted” in his eyes and describing his decision to step down as voluntary and driven by moral responsibility.The trust also accepted the resignations of general secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra following the SIT’s preliminary report into the alleged donation theft. Krishna Mohan has been given additional charge as interim general secretary.Addressing a press conference in Ayodhya, Giri said Rai had dedicated his life to the Ram temple movement and chose to resign to ensure a fair investigation.”In these circumstances, we accepted the resignation. At the same time, we expressed our appreciation for the services rendered by Champat Rai Ji. It was an extraordinary decision that he took voluntarily. He has worked for the construction of the Ram Temple for many years, from the very beginning, when there was not even any activity of this kind, until today. While acknowledging and respecting all the work he has done, we also accepted his resignation in view of the generosity he showed in taking this decision under the present circumstances.”Giri also made it clear that Rai’s resignation did not diminish his personal regard for the veteran VHP leader.”He is untainted in my eyes. He has lived a life of sacrifice for the Ram temple movement,” Giri said.Explaining why the trust accepted the resignations, Giri said the decision was mandated by the trust’s constitution after legal advice from senior jurist K Parasaran.”In this situation, it became necessary for us to act because of the atmosphere that has been created. Our General Secretary, Champat Rai, and trustee Anil Mishra submitted their resignations. As the General Secretary of the Trust, Champat Rai Ji felt pained. He believed that until the entire matter is resolved properly, the accused are caught, and they receive appropriate punishment, it would not be appropriate for them to continue in their positions. With this thought, he voluntarily submitted his resignation. Whether to accept or reject the resignation was not in our hands. K. Parasaran raised an important point. He explained that, according to the Constitution of the Trust, once a resignation is submitted, it is deemed to have been accepted automatically. Therefore, we had no other option. He read out the relevant clauses of the Trust Constitution and explained to us that once the resignation had been submitted, accepting or rejecting it was no longer a matter of our discretion. We had to treat the resignation as accepted.”Krishna Mohan has been entrusted with the responsibilities of interim general secretary until a permanent appointment is made.”We remain committed to ensuring the smooth functioning of all future arrangements. The responsibility of serving as the interim General Secretary has been entrusted to Shri Krishna Mohan Ji, who is seated with me. He will choose a few colleagues to assist him and, together with them, will carry out these responsibilities. Given his approach and experience, we are confident that he will discharge these duties with great efficiency.”The trust also announced the formation of a three-member committee to recommend candidates for the post of general secretary. The panel comprises retired Justice Pradeep Kohli, retired Lieutenant General Vishnukant Chaturvedi and Suresh Havare, a former administrator of the Shirdi Sai Baba Trust.”It has been decided that, while the Board of Trustees will be fully constituted, a three-member committee has been appointed to present names to us. This committee comprises retired Justice Pradeep Kohli, retired Lieutenant General Vishnukant Chaturvedi, and Suresh ji Havare, who successfully managed the Shirdi institution for ten years. We have finalised this three-member committee; they will interview various candidates and submit names to us, from which we will make the final selection.”On the theft investigation, Giri said the trust wanted strict action against everyone involved while cautioning people against what he described as misinformation surrounding the case.”One thing we want to state clearly is that theft is theft. The investigation into the incident is being carried out by the SIT, and it is the responsibility of the authorities to identify those responsible. However, the platform removed it from India on Sunday without specifying the reason.SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal termed the move an attack on freedom of expression.”This is not mere censorship, it is an assault on our collective memory, truth, and freedom of expression,” Badal said.”I strongly condemn this move. Punjab deserves to confront its past with honesty, not suppression,” he added.Punjab’s ruling AAP also condemned the decision and demanded that the film be restored, saying it was important for younger generations to understand the state’s history.AAP leader Baltej Pannu alleged that the BJP and Congress were trying to erase a painful chapter of Punjab’s past.”The younger generation wants to know what happened in Punjab during 1978, 1984, the 1990s and other crucial periods.
