Court grants bail to woman accused in TCS Nashik sexual harassment, conversion case A local court has granted bail to the woman accused in the alleged sexual harassment and religious conversion case at Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) branch in Nashik.Additional Sessions Judge K G Joshi of the Nashik Road Court granted bail to the main accused in the case but denied the same relief to the co-accused, as cited by PTI.Represented by advocate Rahul Kasliwal, the woman sought bail primarily on the grounds of her pregnancy.Public Prosecutor Vijay Gaikwad, along with the victim’s counsel Milind Kurkute and Nitin Pandit, opposed the bail applications of both accused.The prosecution argued that evidence of alleged sexual assault and religious coercion emerged during the investigation.It submitted that one of the accused had given the victim, a co-worker, an Islamic book and a burqa with the intention of converting her to Islam.The prosecution further argued that these actions indicated the victim was allegedly subjected to sexual exploitation and attempts were made to convert her.It also alleged that the accused attempted to convert the victim despite knowing that she belonged to a Scheduled Caste.The case relates to an FIR registered at the Deolali Camp police station under Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means), 65 (sexual harassment) and 299 (outraging religious feelings) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).The two accused have also been booked under relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.A Special Investigation Team of the Nashik Police is investigating nine cases linked to allegations of exploitation, attempted forced religious conversion, outraging religious sentiments, molestation and mental harassment of female employees at the TCS unit in the city.According to the Nashik City Police, the complaint alleged that a Hindu woman in her early 20s had begun following Islamic practices under the influence of colleagues at her workplace.Get the latest India news and live updates. Krishna Mohan takes charge as interim Ram Mandir Trust general secretary after Champat Rai steps down NEW DELHI: Krishna Mohan has been appointed interim general secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, replacing Champat Rai after the Trust accepted his resignation on Monday.Champat Rai stepped down citing moral responsibility amid the ongoing controversy over the alleged embezzlement of donations made to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Trustee Anil Mishra’s resignation was also accepted during the Trust’s meeting.Speaking to reporters after being appointed interim general secretary Krishna Mohan said he had been entrusted with the responsibility until a permanent appointment is made. He also said the Trust would ensure strict action against anyone found guilty in the alleged donation embezzlement case.”I have been entrusted with the responsibility of discharging the duties of General Secretary in an acting capacity until a new General Secretary is appointed. Anyone found guilty in this matter, we will insist and remain firm in our insistence that they receive appropriate punishment in accordance with justice,” he said.”We are all deeply pained by the events that have transpired; everyone has suffered, including the devotees of Ram. There were certain shortcomings in management and operations that were exploited by others. Therefore, my primary endeavour will be to plug these loopholes and rectify errors. I will make every effort to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future,” he added.He added that the controversy had affected the Trust’s public image and said efforts would be made to restore people’s confidence.”The prevailing atmosphere has somewhat tarnished the image of our Trust, giving rise to a sense of mistrust within society. We will take all necessary steps to dispel this negative perception and rebuild trust within the community,” Krishna Mohan said.Mahant Kamal Nayan Das, successor to Trust president Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, also confirmed the decision.”Krishna Mohan has been entrusted with the responsibility of Interim General Secretary. Gopal Rao was not called to the meeting. Champat Rai was also not present in the meeting,” he said.The decision was taken during a three-hour meeting of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust held at the Ram Janmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya. Champat Rai, Anil Mishra’s resignation accepted by the Ram temple trust NEW DELHI: Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust on Monday accepted the resignation of Champat Rai from the post of general secretary and trustee Anil Mishra amid the donation theft row, said the trust treasurer Swami Govind Dev Giri Ji Maharaj. Krishna Mohan has been entrusted with additional duties as interim general secretary of the trust.”Champat Rai, serving as general secretary, was deeply pained; he felt it inappropriate to continue in his role until justice is fully served—meaning the culprits are apprehended and receive appropriate punishment. Driven by this sentiment, he tendered his resignation—a matter that was not ours to simply accept or reject. K Parasaran raised a significant point: under the Trust’s constitution, a resignation is deemed accepted the moment it is submitted,” he said.Trustees Champat Rai and Anil Mishra stepped down last month, saying they were taking moral responsibility amid allegations of misappropriation of donations made to the temple.The controversy centres on allegations that donations made to the Ram Temple were siphoned off by individuals associated with the temple’s management. The main accused was not arrested by the ACB for a month, and he was allowed to flee to Germany. We kept saying it and kept holding press conferences, demanding the arrest of Rajiv Rangeela. They did not arrest him. Why not? Because they do not want to investigate,” Bharadwaj told PTI Videos.Several party workers, including MLAs Sanjeev Jha and Kuldeep Kumar, also joined the protest, demanding answers from the government.”A massive medicine procurement scam has taken place in Delhi’s health sector. The ACB says the scam is worth Rs 650 crore. People are saying that the contractor fled Delhi and left the country. He was allowed to escape in the same way Vijay Mallya was allowed to flee and Nirav Modi was allowed to flee,” Jha said.According to Bharadwaj, the ruling government has alleged that Dr Vatsala Agrawal committed a Rs 650 crore scam in the Directorate General of Health Services. He, however, claimed that “it was the Rekha Gupta government that appointed Agrawal by bypassing all the rules.””It bypassed those who were senior to her. Congress targets PM Modi after passport rank slips to 125th NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday criticised PM Modi’s government over India’s recent passport rankings, alleging that its policies had hurt the country’s global reputation. He also questioned the recent increase in passport fees, saying citizens were paying more despite what he described as poor services.In a post on X, Kharge referred to Prime Minister Modi’s 2018 remarks about the strength of the Indian passport and said the current rankings did not support those claims.”Modi Govt’s policies are responsible for hurting India’s global reputation,” Kharge wrote.”PM Modi claimed in 2018: ‘People travelling and living abroad know the respect and strength of the Indian passport today.’ Where is that ‘strength’ reflected? Facts bely his assertions,” he said.Citing different global passport rankings, Kharge claimed that India’s position had weakened over the years.”In one global passport ranking, India has fallen from 74th in 2013 to 80th in June 2026. [World Economic Forum] Another global passport index places India at a dismal 125th in 2026. [Global Citizen Solutions],” he wrote.Kharge also criticised the government’s decision to increase passport charges, saying fees had gone up without any improvement in services.”Instead of improving services, the Modi Govt has made passports more expensive. Passport fees have been hiked from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500, while Tatkal charges have gone up to Rs 5,000,” he said.The Congress chief also alleged that foreign tourist arrivals had not recovered to pre-pandemic levels and questioned the government’s tourism and visa policies.”Even with respect to the ease of travelling to India, Foreign Tourist Arrivals are still below pre-COVID levels: They have dropped from 10.93 million (2019) to 9.95 million (2024). Is the Modi Govt masking this failure by clubbing NRI arrivals with foreign tourist data? Why is India’s official visa application portal still so outdated and confusing that it resembles a website from the late 1990s? No one in India, the land of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ wants to welcome the tourists like this?” he wrote.Concluding his post, Kharge questioned the government’s claims about India’s international standing.”If the passport is weaker, tourism has not recovered, visa services are lacklustre and citizens are paying more for substandard services, then where exactly is this much-advertised global respect? Reality bites. India’s reputation suffers. Courtesy: Modi Govt!” he said.Kharge’s remarks came after the Global Passport Index 2026 ranked India 125th, down from 124th last year, with visa-free access to 26 destinations. The ranking placed India behind countries including the Philippines, Morocco, Uzbekistan and China, but ahead of Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan.His comments also follow the Centre’s decision to revise passport application fees from July 1, 2026. Under the new rates, the fee for a fresh or reissued 36-page ordinary passport has increased from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500, while the Tatkal charge has risen from Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. Congress targets PM Modi after passport rank slips to 125th NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday criticised PM Modi’s government over India’s recent passport rankings, alleging that its policies had hurt the country’s global reputation. He also questioned the recent increase in passport fees, saying citizens were paying more despite what he described as poor services.In a post on X, Kharge referred to Prime Minister Modi’s 2018 remarks about the strength of the Indian passport and said the current rankings did not support those claims.”Modi Govt’s policies are responsible for hurting India’s global reputation,” Kharge wrote.”PM Modi claimed in 2018: ‘People travelling and living abroad know the respect and strength of the Indian passport today.’ Where is that ‘strength’ reflected? Facts bely his assertions,” he said.Citing different global passport rankings, Kharge claimed that India’s position had weakened over the years.”In one global passport ranking, India has fallen from 74th in 2013 to 80th in June 2026. [World Economic Forum] Another global passport index places India at a dismal 125th in 2026. [Global Citizen Solutions],” he wrote.Kharge also criticised the government’s decision to increase passport charges, saying fees had gone up without any improvement in services.”Instead of improving services, the Modi Govt has made passports more expensive. Passport fees have been hiked from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500, while Tatkal charges have gone up to Rs 5,000,” he said.The Congress chief also alleged that foreign tourist arrivals had not recovered to pre-pandemic levels and questioned the government’s tourism and visa policies.”Even with respect to the ease of travelling to India, Foreign Tourist Arrivals are still below pre-COVID levels: They have dropped from 10.93 million (2019) to 9.95 million (2024). Is the Modi Govt masking this failure by clubbing NRI arrivals with foreign tourist data? Why is India’s official visa application portal still so outdated and confusing that it resembles a website from the late 1990s? No one in India, the land of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ wants to welcome the tourists like this?” he wrote.Concluding his post, Kharge questioned the government’s claims about India’s international standing.”If the passport is weaker, tourism has not recovered, visa services are lacklustre and citizens are paying more for substandard services, then where exactly is this much-advertised global respect? Courtesy: Modi Govt!” he said.Kharge’s remarks came after the Global Passport Index 2026 ranked India 125th, down from 124th last year, with visa-free access to 26 destinations. The ranking placed India behind countries including the Philippines, Morocco, Uzbekistan and China, but ahead of Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan.His comments also follow the Centre’s decision to revise passport application fees from July 1, 2026. Under the new rates, the fee for a fresh or reissued 36-page ordinary passport has increased from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500, while the Tatkal charge has risen from Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. NEW DELHI: Infighting within the Punjab Congress intensified after representatives of the faction backing former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi over Amrinder Singh Raja Warring departed for Delhi on Monday to seek a meeting with the party high command, news agency ANI reported, citing sources.Sources told ANI that the faction headed to Delhi even as AICC in-charge of the state Bhupesh Baghel is scheduled to be in the state.This comes hours after Congress leader and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa shared a photograph on social media that appeared to be a show of strength Channi’s faction.Among those present were manifesto committee co-chairman and MLA Pargat Singh, election committee co-chairpersons Razia Sultana and Bharat Bhushan Ashu, along with several other senior party leaders.”Unity is strength,” Randhawa captioned the post.Notably absent from the gathering were Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira.However, the Punjab Congress, in a social media post, clarified that the meeting was part of preparations for the 2027 assembly elections.”In view of the preparations for the 2027 assembly elections, Punjab Congress campaign committee chairman Charanjit Singh Channi and core committee chairman Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa held an important meeting with their team and senior party leaders. Delhi high court closes Vinesh Phogat petition as infructuous NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Monday disposed of wrestler and three-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat’s petition challenging her initial exclusion from selection trials for the Asian Games, observing that the matter had become “infructuous”, even as it directed the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to decide her pending show-cause notice within two weeks.According to news agency PTI, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma closed the proceedings after noting that Phogat had already been permitted to take part in the trials pursuant to earlier judicial orders, making her immediate grievance regarding participation no longer relevant.However, the court directed that the WFI must take a decision on the show-cause notice dated May 9 within two weeks and inform both the athlete and the court of the outcome.The federation also assured the court that Phogat would be given a personal hearing before any final decision.While Phogat’s counsel argued that her petition raised broader concerns over the federation’s selection policy, the court said those issues would require a fresh petition. “This can be disposed of and then you can file a fresh writ petition,” the court observed.The high court also noted that since Phogat had already competed in the trials, the specific challenge to her exclusion had effectively become infructuous.Phogat had challenged the WFI’s selection policy and circular that restricted eligibility for Asian Games trials only to medal winners of certain domestic events. Delhi high court closes Vinesh Phogat petition as infructuous NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Monday disposed of wrestler and three-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat’s petition challenging her initial exclusion from selection trials for the Asian Games, observing that the matter had become “infructuous”, even as it directed the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to decide her pending show-cause notice within two weeks.According to news agency PTI, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma closed the proceedings after noting that Phogat had already been permitted to take part in the trials pursuant to earlier judicial orders, making her immediate grievance regarding participation no longer relevant.However, the court directed that the WFI must take a decision on the show-cause notice dated May 9 within two weeks and inform both the athlete and the court of the outcome.The federation also assured the court that Phogat would be given a personal hearing before any final decision.While Phogat’s counsel argued that her petition raised broader concerns over the federation’s selection policy, the court said those issues would require a fresh petition. “This can be disposed of and then you can file a fresh writ petition,” the court observed.The high court also noted that since Phogat had already competed in the trials, the specific challenge to her exclusion had effectively become infructuous.Phogat had challenged the WFI’s selection policy and circular that restricted eligibility for Asian Games trials only to medal winners of certain domestic events. Indian-origin businessman ‘poses’ as CIA agent, woos Indonesian president to secure fighter gets deal, says report NEW DELHI: Indian-origin businessman Gaurav Srivastava allegedly posed as a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operative and established ties with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in an attempt to secure a multibillion-dollar defence deal involving fighter jets and other military equipment, according to a report by Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).According to civil lawsuits filed by his former business partner, Niels Troost in California and the southern district of New York, the alleged scheme began with Srivastava claiming in recorded phone calls that he worked for the CIA. The lawsuits allege that he leveraged those claims to gain access to senior Indonesian officials, accompanying then-defence minister Prabowo Subianto to high-level meetings in Washington, DC, and Jakarta in 2020 where military procurement was discussed.That year, Srivastava obtained three letters of intention to purchase outlining plans for Indonesia to acquire fighter jets and other military equipment. He later secured another letter of intent and a memorandum of understanding covering two additional defence procurement arrangements in 2021 and 2022. However, none of the proposed agreements ultimately led to purchases by the Indonesian government, the report said.Between 2020 and 2022, four companies controlled by Srivastava obtained five preliminary defence agreements from Indonesia’s defence ministry and a state-owned defence firm. During this period, Srivastava was photographed alongside Prabowo and a company executive at a signing ceremony, and the agreement was later publicly announced at a press conference.The proposed deals included the supply of 36 F-15 fighter jets, UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, C-130 transport aircraft, and a joint operations command and control centre for Indonesia’s defence ministry. In 2022, the United States approved the potential sale of 36 F-15 fighter jets and related equipment to Indonesia in a deal valued at up to .9 billion.However, corporate records showed that the four companies behind the agreements were shell entities with no prior experience in defence procurement. All were later deregistered for failing to pay taxes, and none were identified in the US defense security cooperation agency’s announcement on the proposed fighter jet sale.According to legal complaint, Srivastava also cultivated relationships with influential Indonesian business figures, including Prabowo’s brother, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, chairman of the Arsari Group. The complaint alleges that Troost, believing Srivastava’s claims that he was a well-connected CIA operative, transferred a 50 per cent stake in his company to him. File photo of KC Venugopal NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday hit out at the Vishva Hindu Parishad after the organisation wrote to the Ayodhya police over remarks made by opposition leaders on the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple.The VHP has urged police to examine the claims made by several opposition leaders, including Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, and summon them to substantiate their allegations.Reacting to the move, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said the VHP’s letter attacking opposition leaders in the Ram Temple theft case was a “classic case of the pot calling the kettle black”.”The same VHP that had in the past faced allegations by the Nirmohi Akhara of a ‘Rs 1,400 crore Ram Mandir scam’ is demanding that opposition leaders who questioned the alleged loot be interrogated,” Venugopal said in a post on X.”The demand is as absurd as it is shameless. Having itself come under the scanner, the VHP has neither the moral authority nor the credibility to point fingers at the Opposition,” he said.Venugopal questioned why opposition leaders were being dragged into the matter when the temple trust, he said, had links to the BJP-led establishment.”Afterall, Temple Trust was set up by PM Modi; Trust General Secretary- Champat Rai, VHP Vice President and RSS Pracharak; Trust Chairman Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India, awarded Padma Bushan by the BJP; Central and State Government — BJP-ruled. Then, how are Priyanka ji, Akhilesh ji or other opposition leaders even relevant to this matter?” he said.The Congress leader claimed that the VHP and the Sangh Parivar stood “completely discredited” over the issue.”The controversial Ram Temple movement has long been dogged by allegations of Chanda Chori, and the latest reports have once again exposed that these self-proclaimed ‘saviors’ of Hindus have nothing to do with religion or Lord Ram. They only exploit devotees’ faith and misuse Lord Ram’s name for political and financial gain,” Venugopal alleged.He also asked why the VHP had not demanded action against those within its own ranks if it was concerned about the sanctity of the Ram Mandir.”Why is it silent on the BJP leadership that claimed full credit for the temple’s construction but is now conspicuously absent when the Trust appointed by them is itself under scrutiny?” he asked.”Having been cornered by serious questions and left red-faced, they are now trying to create a spectacle, feign innocence, twist facts, intimidate critics and divert attention so that their own moral rot and ethical bankruptcy is not exposed,” Venugopal said.Reiterating the party’s demand for a court-monitored investigation, he added, “We reiterate our demand for an independent, Supreme Court-monitored probe. The current SIT is no more than an elaborate mechanism to protect the plunderers of Ram Mandir.”The Congress attack came a day after party leader Pawan Khera said fresh allegations and evidence were emerging every day in connection with the alleged donation theft at the Ram temple.In a video statement posted on X, Khera said VHP leader Alok Kumar had written to the investigating officer asking that evidence be sought from Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav and Ram Gopal Yadav.”So, the implication is that one side commits the theft, while another is expected to provide the proof,” Khera said.”The truth is that they have no real intention of catching the thieves. As always, their only aim is to emotionally mislead Hindu society to further their own political interests,” he alleged.Khera also accused the VHP of using religion for political purposes and said the organisation should “stop being the contractors of the Hindu community”.”They must remove the word Hindu from their organisations and then carry out as many robberies as they want. File photo of KC Venugopal NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday hit out at the Vishva Hindu Parishad after the organisation wrote to the Ayodhya police over remarks made by opposition leaders on the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple.The VHP has urged police to examine the claims made by several opposition leaders, including Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, and summon them to substantiate their allegations.Reacting to the move, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said the VHP’s letter attacking opposition leaders in the Ram Temple theft case was a “classic case of the pot calling the kettle black”.”The same VHP that had in the past faced allegations by the Nirmohi Akhara of a ‘Rs 1,400 crore Ram Mandir scam’ is demanding that opposition leaders who questioned the alleged loot be interrogated,” Venugopal said in a post on X.”The demand is as absurd as it is shameless. Having itself come under the scanner, the VHP has neither the moral authority nor the credibility to point fingers at the Opposition,” he said.Venugopal questioned why opposition leaders were being dragged into the matter when the temple trust, he said, had links to the BJP-led establishment.”Afterall, Temple Trust was set up by PM Modi; Trust General Secretary- Champat Rai, VHP Vice President and RSS Pracharak; Trust Chairman Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India, awarded Padma Bushan by the BJP; Central and State Government — BJP-ruled. Then, how are Priyanka ji, Akhilesh ji or other opposition leaders even relevant to this matter?” he said.The Congress leader claimed that the VHP and the Sangh Parivar stood “completely discredited” over the issue.”The controversial Ram Temple movement has long been dogged by allegations of Chanda Chori, and the latest reports have once again exposed that these self-proclaimed ‘saviors’ of Hindus have nothing to do with religion or Lord Ram. They only exploit devotees’ faith and misuse Lord Ram’s name for political and financial gain,” Venugopal alleged.He also asked why the VHP had not demanded action against those within its own ranks if it was concerned about the sanctity of the Ram Mandir.”Why is it silent on the BJP leadership that claimed full credit for the temple’s construction but is now conspicuously absent when the Trust appointed by them is itself under scrutiny?” he asked.”Having been cornered by serious questions and left red-faced, they are now trying to create a spectacle, feign innocence, twist facts, intimidate critics and divert attention so that their own moral rot and ethical bankruptcy is not exposed,” Venugopal said.Reiterating the party’s demand for a court-monitored investigation, he added, “We reiterate our demand for an independent, Supreme Court-monitored probe. The current SIT is no more than an elaborate mechanism to protect the plunderers of Ram Mandir.”The Congress attack came a day after party leader Pawan Khera said fresh allegations and evidence were emerging every day in connection with the alleged donation theft at the Ram temple.In a video statement posted on X, Khera said VHP leader Alok Kumar had written to the investigating officer asking that evidence be sought from Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav and Ram Gopal Yadav.”So, the implication is that one side commits the theft, while another is expected to provide the proof,” Khera said.”The truth is that they have no real intention of catching the thieves. As always, their only aim is to emotionally mislead Hindu society to further their own political interests,” he alleged.Khera also accused the VHP of using religion for political purposes and said the organisation should “stop being the contractors of the Hindu community”.”They must remove the word Hindu from their organisations and then carry out as many robberies as they want. Saeed has also been charged with waging war against India and hatching a conspiracy from across the border (Picture credit: PTI) NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a supplementary chargesheet against Pakistan-based terrorist Hafiz Saeed in the Pahalgam terror attack case, formally naming him as an accused for allegedly orchestrating the cross-border conspiracy behind the April 22 attack, the agency said on Monday.According to news agency ANI, Saeed has been charged in his individual capacity as well as in his role as the chief of the banned terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and its proxy organisation, The Resistance Front (TRF).The supplementary chargesheet was filed before the NIA special court in Jammu in continuation of the agency’s original 1,597-page chargesheet.It details Pakistan’s alleged conspiracy, Hafiz Saeed’s role and the evidence collected during the investigation through scientific analysis and on-ground examination, the NIA said.The anti-terror agency has invoked various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967.According to the NIA, Saeed has also been charged with waging war against India and hatching a conspiracy from across the border.The original chargesheet, filed in December last year, had named LeT/TRF among seven accused.Investigators established the involvement of LeT/TRF after tracing the origin of two messages posted on TRF’s digital platforms—one claiming responsibility for the attack shortly after it took place and another later denying involvement—to Pakistan.The earlier chargesheet also named top Lashkar handler Sajid Jatt, three Pakistani terrorists identified as Faisal Jatt alias Suleman Shah, Habeeb Tahir alias Jibran and Abu Hamza, along with arrested Kashmiri locals Parvaiz Ahmad and Bashir Ahmad Jothad, who allegedly provided shelter to the attackers before the assault.The Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 triggered a massive investigation by the NIA, which has continued to pursue the wider cross-border terror network allegedly responsible for planning and executing the attack.Get the latest India news and live updates. NEW DELHI: A delegation of NDA leaders on Monday submitted a formal complaint to Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer V Anbukumar, alleging that officials were showing “zero regard for the approved process” during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state.The delegation demanded a thorough inquiry, mandatory door-to-door re-verification of all enumeration forms, and strict legal action against officials and political functionaries found responsible for the alleged irregularities.”We write to express serious concern over the massive irregularities in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of the electoral rolls in the state of Karnataka. The officials who are supposed to conduct the SIR are showing zero regard for the approved process, thereby undermining the very spirit of democracy,” the leaders said in their letter.The delegation alleged that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were not following the mandatory guidelines for door-to-door verification laid down by the district election officer.It also claimed that multiple complaints had been received from several parts of the state.Alleging that enumeration forms were being filled out at community halls, mosques and the residences of BLOs, the NDA leaders said WhatsApp groups had also been created for the exercise, with people being encouraged to visit these locations to complete the SIR process.”Such a practice is a breach of the established SIR guidelines and raises serious concerns regarding the neutrality and secular character of the electoral process. The SIR is conducted to strengthen the integrity of the electoral rolls, but the manner in which BLOs are conducting the exercise is defeating the very purpose of the revision,” they said.According to the delegation, such practices would create an “unsustainable and unreliable” electoral roll.”No deviation is allowed from the procedures prescribed by the Election Commission of India,” the letter said.The NDA alliance partners urged the Chief Electoral Officer to order an immediate inquiry and direct the re-verification of all enumeration forms through mandatory door-to-door verification.”Strict legal action must be initiated against all officials and political functionaries found responsible for these irregularities,” they said.The opposition parties have, over the past few days, accused the Congress government in Karnataka of “facilitating the inclusion of illegal immigrants” through mass enrolment camps.They also released videos allegedly showing mass enumeration camps being conducted instead of house-to-house visits by BLOs. The opposition further accused the Congress government of “misusing” officials and “diluting” the SIR process.’Government will not interfere in the SIR process’Meanwhile, Karnataka chief minister D K Shivakumar rejected the allegations made by the NDA leaders and asserted that the government would not interfere in the SIR exercise. He claimed the opposition was “worried” because the government was creating large-scale awareness about the revision process.”The government will not interfere in the SIR process. The opposition is worried because the government is creating awareness about the process on such a large scale. Around 4.5 crore people have obtained caste and income certificates. They have been given the facility to download these certificates online. The Opposition only wants poor people and minorities to face difficulties,” Shivakumar said.”Tell us where the Bangladeshi migrants are. If they are there, why didn’t your government take action when it was in power? Let them criticise as much as they want. Criticism fades away, but good work remains,” he added.Stressing the importance of the SIR process in safeguarding democratic rights, Shivakumar said, “We are ensuring that everyone gets the right to vote. The Opposition should appreciate the work we have done. I have also instructed our party workers to remain alert. NEW DELHI: A delegation of NDA leaders on Monday submitted a formal complaint to Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer V Anbukumar, alleging that officials were showing “zero regard for the approved process” during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state.The delegation demanded a thorough inquiry, mandatory door-to-door re-verification of all enumeration forms, and strict legal action against officials and political functionaries found responsible for the alleged irregularities.”We write to express serious concern over the massive irregularities in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of the electoral rolls in the state of Karnataka. The officials who are supposed to conduct the SIR are showing zero regard for the approved process, thereby undermining the very spirit of democracy,” the leaders said in their letter.The delegation alleged that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were not following the mandatory guidelines for door-to-door verification laid down by the district election officer.It also claimed that multiple complaints had been received from several parts of the state.Alleging that enumeration forms were being filled out at community halls, mosques and the residences of BLOs, the NDA leaders said WhatsApp groups had also been created for the exercise, with people being encouraged to visit these locations to complete the SIR process.”Such a practice is a breach of the established SIR guidelines and raises serious concerns regarding the neutrality and secular character of the electoral process. The SIR is conducted to strengthen the integrity of the electoral rolls, but the manner in which BLOs are conducting the exercise is defeating the very purpose of the revision,” they said.According to the delegation, such practices would create an “unsustainable and unreliable” electoral roll.”No deviation is allowed from the procedures prescribed by the Election Commission of India,” the letter said.The NDA alliance partners urged the Chief Electoral Officer to order an immediate inquiry and direct the re-verification of all enumeration forms through mandatory door-to-door verification.”Strict legal action must be initiated against all officials and political functionaries found responsible for these irregularities,” they said.The opposition parties have, over the past few days, accused the Congress government in Karnataka of “facilitating the inclusion of illegal immigrants” through mass enrolment camps.They also released videos allegedly showing mass enumeration camps being conducted instead of house-to-house visits by BLOs. The opposition further accused the Congress government of “misusing” officials and “diluting” the SIR process.’Government will not interfere in the SIR process’Meanwhile, Karnataka chief minister D K Shivakumar rejected the allegations made by the NDA leaders and asserted that the government would not interfere in the SIR exercise. He claimed the opposition was “worried” because the government was creating large-scale awareness about the revision process.”The government will not interfere in the SIR process. If they are there, why didn’t your government take action when it was in power? Let them criticise as much as they want. Criticism fades away, but good work remains,” he added.Stressing the importance of the SIR process in safeguarding democratic rights, Shivakumar said, “We are ensuring that everyone gets the right to vote. The Opposition should appreciate the work we have done. I have also instructed our party workers to remain alert. VB-G RAM G__ India’s new rural jobs scheme promises more work but shifts burden to states (PTI image) The Centre’s newly launched Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G), which replaces the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), could improve rural incomes through higher wages and increased employment guarantees.However, its long-term success may be constrained by the significantly higher financial burden placed on state governments, according to a report by Systematix Research.Higher wages, more work daysThe report noted that the revamped scheme increases the annual employment guarantee from 100 days to 125 days and raises the average daily wage by nearly 10 per cent, from Rs 299 to Rs 327.These changes are expected to strengthen rural purchasing power and support consumer demand at a time when rural wages and incomes have remained under pressure.Funding shift raises concernsDespite the enhanced benefits, the report cautioned that the scheme’s new funding structure could limit its effectiveness.Unlike MGNREGA, where the Centre bore the bulk of the expenditure, the new scheme follows a 60:40 Centre-state cost-sharing model for most states.According to the report, this marks a fundamental shift from an open-ended funding model to one with centrally capped allocations.States face four-fold increase in spendingSystematix Research estimated that state governments may have to spend around Rs 35,300 crore in FY27, compared with about Rs 8,690 crore in FY26 under the previous scheme.”The overall burden on states in funding VB-G RAM G could rise by four to five times their contribution under the outgoing MGNREGA scheme,” the report said.It warned that fiscally constrained states may have to increase revenue spending, reduce capital expenditure or cut back on other welfare schemes to meet the additional financial commitments.Implementation will be keyThe report also noted that higher wages and longer employment guarantees alone may not significantly improve rural demand if implementation is hampered by funding shortages or declining employment trends.While the scheme aims to create durable rural infrastructure and improve accountability, the report concluded that its impact on the rural economy will ultimately depend on how effectively states manage the higher funding requirements and implement the programme in the years ahead.Get the latest India news and live updates.
