Beyond Type 1, co-founded by Nick Jonas and supported by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, has launched #TheBeyondType campaign in India to combat type 1 diabetes stigma. The initiative highlights inspiring individuals living with T1D and partners with local organisations to improve awareness, medical support, and community networks for affected families across the nation. . Beyond Type 1, global nonprofit co-founded by Nick Jonas and supported by board member Priyanka Chopra Jonas, launched its first campaign in India — #TheBeyondType. The initiative aims to build awareness about type 1 diabetes (T1D), challenge stigma and strengthen support for families across the country.India has more young people living with T1D than any other nation, yet understanding of the condition remains limited. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition, not caused by age or lifestyle, but stigma often leads families to miss early symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue and sudden weight loss.Priyanka Chopra Jonas stressed the importance of bringing more real stories to the forefront. “India has extraordinary people living with Type 1 diabetes, yet their stories are rarely heard,” she said. “I came to understand this community more deeply through my husband Nick, and I’ve witnessed firsthand the strength and determination that so many people living with T1D carry every single day. The Beyond Type brings a few of these stories forward, and shows that with proper care and access, diabetes does not define them or limit what they can achieve.”The campaign highlights people who continue to follow their ambitions despite living with T1D, including triathlete Lt Col Kumar Gaurav, karate champion Mehrin Rana, pastry chef Nishant Amin, toy designer Shreya Jain, dancer and actor Indu Thampy and marathon runner Harichandran Ponnusamy. As Mehrin puts it, “Diabetes is just a part of my life, not a limit. A person with type 1 can do everything in their life without any limits.”Nick Jonas, diagnosed with T1D at age 13, emphasised why the campaign matters in India. “I know for myself how diabetes doesn’t have to limit you, but only when you have access to the right care, tools, and support,” he said. “That’s why we’re here in India, where awareness is low and stigma remains high, to help make that possible for everyone. Through my own family, I’ve come to love India deeply, and I’m proud of the progress already underway.”Research shows how stigma affects everyday life for young people with T1D. A study published in PLOS Global Public Health found that many hide their diagnosis, avoid taking insulin in public and face family pressure, especially girls, to stay silent due to marriage concerns. Healthcare providers reported that young people are often viewed as weak or treated differently at school and work.To address these challenges, Beyond Type 1 is partnering with grassroots organisations across high-need regions. These include HRIDAY in Delhi–NCR, Nityaasha Foundation in Pune, Gram Jyoti in Jharkhand, and SAMATVAM Trust in Bangalore—each group focusing on improving awareness, providing medical support and building stronger community networks for young people with T1D.“At Beyond Type 1 we believe real change begins with the people closest to the work on the ground,” said Seema Srivastava, Beyond Type 1’s director of social impact and global advocacy. “By partnering with grassroots organisations, we are helping families recognise early signs, reduce shame and misinformation, and access education, supplies and peer support.”Founded in 2015 by Nick Jonas and Juliet de Baubigny, Beyond Type 1 runs the world’s largest digital diabetes community, offering tools, education and support to help people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes live full and empowered lives.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos“India’s Diplomacy Has Spine”: Tharoor Praises India’s Assertive Foreign Policy On RussiaRahul–Priyanka Candid Chat Goes Viral As Camera Catches Fun Banter’We Have A Diplomatic Allergy’: Shashi Tharoor Warns India Still Lacks A National Security StrategySanchar Saathi App Row In LS: Cong Flags Privacy Fears, Scindia Says ‘Snooping Not Possible’Rupee Slides To Record Low Of 90 Per Dollar As Trade Uncertainty, Dollar Demand And Oil Costs Spike’Leader Is Bulldozing’: Kharge, Nadda Lock Horns Over TMC MP’s Speech In Rajya SabhaIndia’s Workforce Power Will Keep Growing, Jaishankar Says, As He Takes Down Anti H-1B NarrativesKTR Slams Congress, Says Rahul Gandhi Has No Vision And Is An Albatross Around Opposition’s NeckRussian Pop Star Backs Bharat Name Change And Reveals PM Modi Promised To Build A Temple In RussiaRELOS Gives India Seamless Access To Russian Bases As Moscow Boosts Military Ties Before Putin Visit123PhotostoriesTop 10 natural sources of magnesium to support women’s healthRupee slides? Priyanka Gandhi Vadra labelled Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s Nehru-Babri Masjid remark a ‘distraction’ from pressing public issues. Singh alleged Nehru wanted government funds for the mosque, contrasting it with Sardar Patel’s opposition and secularism. Rahul Gandhi declined comment. Singh’s statement precedes the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra; Rajnath Singh NEW DELHI: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday dismissed defence minister Rajnath Singh’s “Nehru–Babri Masjid” remark as a “distraction” from the issues that matter.“These are all distractions. There are many real issues that need discussion. They create a new distraction every day so that we are unable to talk about the people’s concerns,” she told reporters outside Parliament. Her brother, and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, declined to comment, saying reporters were “wasting their time” by asking him for a reaction. The siblings are great-grandchildren of Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister.Addressing the ‘Sardar Sabha’ in Vadodara, Gujarat, on Tuesday, Rajnath Singh alleged that Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to use government funds to build the Babri Masjid. He added that it was then-home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who opposed the plan, and described Patel as “truly secular.”“Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was truly secular. He never believed in appeasement. When Jawaharlal Nehru spoke about spending government funds on the Babri Masjid issue, it was Patel, a son of Gujarat, who opposed it. He did not allow the Babri Masjid to be built with government money,” the senior BJP leader remarked. He added, “Nehru raised the question of reconstructing the Somnath Temple. Patel clarified that the Somnath case was different: the public had donated Rs 30 lakh, a trust had been formed, and not a single rupee of government money was used,” referring to the temple’s reconstruction in Veraval, Gujarat.Singh’s remarks came ahead of December 6, marking the 33rd anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. In November 2019, a Constitution bench of the Supreme Court delivered a unanimous verdict paving the way for the construction of Lord’s Ram temple in the city. The temple was inaugurated on January 22, 2024.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. As of September 30, 2025, the country reported 3,320 cases and just 14 deaths — a striking contrast to previous years where fewer infections caused significantly higher mortality. In comparison, 2024 saw 2,041 cases and 347 deaths, 2023 recorded 8,125 cases and 129 deaths, and 2022 logged 1,320 cases and 410 deaths, NCDC’s influenza surveillance shows.Kerala reported the highest deaths in 2025 (8), followed by Maharashtra (3) and one each in Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.Amid rising case numbers, the Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on Tuesday reviewed national preparedness for the winter influenza season. Officials from NCDC, IDSP and the Health Ministry informed him that surveillance systems show no unusual rise in influenza activity so far and that circulating strains remain the usual seasonal variants — H3N2, Influenza B (Victoria) and a small proportion of H1N1.Nadda directed all states and district hospitals to complete readiness checks within two weeks, asked central hospitals to ensure full preparedness, and instructed that advisories and regular mock drills be conducted as the January–March influenza peak approaches.Experts say the unusual trend of more cases but sharply fewer deaths reflects stronger population immunity, faster diagnosis and improved clinical management since COVID-19.“When the respiratory lining is inflamed due to poor air quality, viruses attach and multiply more easily. Falling temperatures and mucosal irritation are amplifying infection rates,” said Dr Ekta Gupta, Professor of Virology at ILBS, explaining that the post-monsoon rise is expected, but airway irritation increases vulnerability. She attributed the fall in deaths to better diagnostics and treatment readiness. “PCR testing is now widely available, clinicians are more confident in managing respiratory infections, and vaccination uptake among high-risk groups has improved — all of which prevent severe outcomes.”Dr Gupta said the influenza strain in circulation has not changed, and that repeated exposure over years has built population-level immunity, reducing severity.Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, senior consultant, internal medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said the mismatch between high case numbers and low mortality also reflects better awareness. “People are seeking help earlier, more labs are testing for influenza, and improved treatment facilities and vaccinations in vulnerable groups are preventing deaths,” he said.As winter approaches, public-health experts warn that timely diagnosis and vaccination remain critical, especially for the elderly, pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses.About the AuthorAnuja JaiswalAnuja Jaiswal is a Senior Assistant Editor at The Times of India, with an impressive 18-year career in narrative journalism. Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak shared an AI-generated video portraying PM Narendra Modi as a “chaiwala” at an international summit, referencing his past. The BJP reacted furiously, accusing the Congress of mocking a “kaamdar” prime minister from a backward community and his humble origins. Screenshot from AI video posted by Ragini Nayak NEW DELHI: An AI-generated video posted by Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak depicting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “chaiwala” (tea seller) sparked a furious response from the ruling BJP. The clip shows PM Modi acting as a selling rea at an international summit, holding a tea kettle in one hand and glasses in the other, while saying, “Chai ye… chai bolo chai ye.”This was a reference to the prime minister’s oft-repeated account of selling tea in his hometown of Vadnagar in Gujarat while growing up — a version that critics, including several Congress leaders, have long disputed.Reacting to the video, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla — a former Congress leader — accused the grand old party of being unable to accept a “kaamdar” prime minister from a backward community.“After Renuka Chowdhury insulted Parliament, now Ragini Nayak attacks and mocks PM Modi’s ‘chaiwala’ background. Naamdar Congress cannot stand a kamdar PM from the OBC community who has risen from a poor background. They mocked his chaiwala past earlier too, abused him 150 times, and even targeted his mother in Bihar. People will never forgive them,” Poonawalla wrote on X.The BJP frequently highlights PM Modi as a “kaamdar” (workaholic) leader in contrast to the “naamdar” (elitist) Congress. The PM himself has used the term to critique Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who comes from a family of three former prime ministers.Congress veteran Mani Shankar Aiyar’s “chaiwala” jibe at the BJP’s then-PM candidate Narendra Modi in January 2014 had famously backfired, as the saffron party went on to secure a decisive victory in the general elections held in April–May that year.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. This is the objective of numerous joint projects in energy, industry, space, agriculture, and other sectors,” Putin said. The Russian President said that Moscow has a “substantive dialogue” with Chinese President Xi Jinping on economic issues and hopes to continue the same with PM Modi during his upcoming visit.”We have established a substantive dialogue on economic issues with the President of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Xi Jinping. We will also discuss these topics in detail during the upcoming visit to India with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including increasing imports of Indian goods to our market,” he added.Defence deals likely to dominate talksEarlier, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov had said that discussions could include the sale of additional S-400 long-range air defence missiles.”Highly on the agenda and this could be discussed. Our military industry is working pretty well. Russian arms 36 % in Indian armed forces and hopefully will continue,” Peskov said.He said that Russia also hopes to take forward talks on India potentially acquiring the Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter. “SU-57 is the best plane in the world. SU57 will be on the agenda,” he added.Peskov highlighted the depth of defence cooperation, including the BrahMos programme. “As far as our cooperation in the defence industry goes, let’s remember famous Brahmos missiles. It’s not only just production or it’s not only acts of buying or selling, it’s exchange of high technologies, and it really paves the way for a bright future in this field of cooperation,” he said.”We’re developing quite, quite a variety of very complicated systems. And in this sense, of course, we have capabilities. We are ready to share this with our Indian friends, our experience,” he added.Russian Sukhoi-30 jets form the bulk of India’s fighter fleet, and the Su-57 offer is expected to come up in this week’s talks, two officials familiar with the matter told Reuters. Russia possesses important tech, small and flexible reactors. Russia has real experience in producing small reactors. We’re exchanging mutual investments, joint investments and it makes this kind of cooperation even more valuable for our countries, in terms for securing future of this country,” Peskov said.”We were deeply involved in creating a sector of peaceful nuclear energy in India, in Kudankulam, and so we were hoping for the continuation of this project,” he added.Discussions on additional S-400 unitsIndia has no plans to scale back defence ties with Russia, even as its crude oil purchases fluctuate. Discussions on additional S-400 units are also likely, defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh indicated last week, according to Reuters.Analysts say recent US–Russia talks on the Ukraine conflict could make it easier for India to deepen engagement with Moscow, though the broader relationship faces strain.”A large part of the trading relationship was based on energy, which is now losing traction under the threat of sanctions from the United States,” Harsh Pant of the Observer Research Foundation told Reuters. “And at the end of the day, only defence remains, which continues to bind the two together,” he added.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Jamiat president Mehmood Madani stated it’s unrealistic to expect mainstream parties to exclusively champion Muslim causes, criticizing the Congress for struggling to address its own issues. He also clarified his remarks on ‘jihad’, asserting it’s a pious word being deliberately misused to malign Islam. NEW DELHI: Jamiat president Mehmood Madani on Wednesday said that it was “wrong to expect mainstream parties to fight only for Muslims”. He went on to take a jibe at Congress, saying that the grand old party was not even “able to raise its own issues”.”It is wrong to expect any mainstream political party to fight only for Muslims or raise only their issues. I do not want to keep such expectations from any party. Right now, the Congress is not even able to raise its own issues — how will it raise anyone else’s?” he said. This comes after Madani’s remarks on ‘jihad’ created a political uproar with not just BJP, but also the community leaders, differing from his opinions. After the row, he clarified that “jihad is a pious word” and “Centre has decided anything negative is Jihad.””The entire ministry, be it centre, or be it state, have decided that if anything negative related to Muslims comes to light, it will be called Jihad. Jihad is a pious word. We are fighting for the real meaning of jihad. Jihad is a pious word. We are fighting for the real meaning of jihad. The term jihad is being used to abuse Islam in a very planned manner,” he said. The Jamiat president also took responsibility for his other remarks, saying it was his duty to avoid being misunderstood — but insisted that, taken in context, his remarks were not problematic.”It is correct that some confusion has been created, but if you see it is context then you won’t misunderstand it, to make sure that no misunderstanding happens was my responsibility, and I could not fulfill that responsibility, you can blame me for that,” Madani said.”But if you hear my full statement, then three statements have been said. One is that in India Jihad has multiple meanings…The biggest jihad is to have a clear vision of your aim and work on yourself. The Indian Air Force commemorated its decisive response to Pakistan’s 1971 pre-emptive strikes, which led to a 14-day war and the birth of Bangladesh. IAF’s precise counter-attacks crippled enemy airfields, blunting their initial move. This victory, celebrated as Vijay Diwas, contrasts with current strained India-Bangladesh ties, while Pakistan-Bangladesh relations have improved. India-Pak war 1971 (Image courtesy: @IAF-MCC) NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Wednesday recalled its response to Pakistan’s pre-emptive air strikes of December 3, 1971 — attacks that triggered a 14-day war ending in a decisive Indian victory and the creation of Bangladesh.”Following Pakistan’s pre-emptive strike on 03 Dec 1971, the IAF responded with precision and fury,” the IAF posted on X.“Through the night, Canberra crews flew 23 deep-strike missions, hitting enemy airfields at Murid, Mianwali, Sargodha, Chander, Risalewala, Shorkot and Masrur (Karachi). Runways were cratered, installations shattered, and the adversary’s early move was blunted within hours,” it said. The subsequent air–land operations also began with what the post described as a “thunderous reminder” of the IAF’s reach.“AN-12s dropped forty-eight 500-lb bombs over Changa Manga, sparking a massive fire in the enemy’s supply camp,” it added. On December 16, 1971, Pakistani forces commanded by Lieutenant General AAK Niazi surrendered to the Indian Army’s Lieutenant General JS Aurora — a capitulation involving 93,000 troops, the largest surrender since World War II.The day is celebrated as “Vijay Diwas” (Victory Day) in both India and Bangladesh. However, relations between them have grown strained following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister in August 2024. Hasina has been staying in Delhi since her removal. In contrast, ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh — which were one country until 1971 — have improved significantly under the caretaker administration of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
