Kerala medical student Sawariya Basanth killed over ‘forced conversion’ claims in Uzbekistan (Image/X@hatedetector) NEW DELHI: A 21-year-old medical student from Kerala was murdered in Uzbekistan by a fellow student following repeated attempts to force her to convert her religion, according to her family’s complaint.Sawariya Basanth, a first-year student at the Bukhara State Medical Institute, was allegedly killed by 22-year-old Sadarul Anam, also a student from Kerala’s Malappuram district. Uzbek authorities have arrested Anam in connection with the case, local media reported. Following the repatriation of Basanth’s body, Indian authorities conducted a second post-mortem at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital on Thursday at the request of her family. Her relatives later performed her last rites.Harippad Police in Kerala have registered a murder case based on a complaint filed by the victim’s father.Station House Officer V Vishnu said the preliminary post-mortem findings indicated signs of physical assault.”We are yet to get official details of the crime from law enforcement agencies in Uzbekistan. We will examine the legal standing of the case registered in Kerala for the crime recorded in Uzbekistan,” Vishnu said.According to the complaint filed by the family, Basanth had been repeatedly assaulted after resisting Anam’s alleged demands to convert her religion. The family also claimed that classmates were aware of the alleged harassment and pressure she had faced.Meanwhile, the Embassy of India in Uzbekistan said it is extending all possible assistance to the victim’s family.”Embassy is extending all assistance to the family of deceased Ms Sawariya Basanth including on the repatriation of her mortal remains. Today, Ambassador met her family member. Embassy is also in constant touch with the concerned authorities in Uzbekistan,” the embassy said in a post on X.Indian authorities said they remain in touch with officials in Uzbekistan as the investigation into the case continues.Get the latest India news and live updates. Tagging or filtering calls from 1600 series not allowed; can block those from 1400 series, says TRAI NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Friday said “any tagging, blocking or filtering of calls originating from 1600 series numbers is not permitted.” Allaying fears that the designated 1600 series – reserved for banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) – and 1400 series – mandated for entities making promotional calls across sectors – could potentially lead to misinformation or misinterpretation, the regulator said “any tagging or filtering of calls from 1400 series numbers is not allowed except for blocking on the do not disturb (DND) registry.” “TRAI has mandated the use of 1600xx series numbers for service and transaction calls by regulated entities of BFSI sector (entities regulated by RBI, SEBI, IRDAI and PFRDA) to their existing customers and by govt entities for govt to citizen communication. A key objective of assigning designated series for these important communications is to make such calls trustworthy for the customers/ citizen,” TRAI said in a statement, adding, “Under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR), any tagging, blocking or filtering of the calls originating from 1600 series numbers is not permitted.”Regarding 1400xx series, it said: ” Entities desirous of availing 140 series number for making promotional calls must register with telecom service providers under the TCCCPR framework and comply with the provisions of the regulation. Customers have the right to allow or block promotional call originating from 140 series numbers from entities of any or all sectors by registering their preference on the DND registry.””A customer who has blocked any or all sectors from receiving promotional calls on the DND registry will not receive any calls from 140 series originating from entities of the blocked sectors. The customer can register his/her DND preference through multiple means including through TRAI DND App. Any tagging or filtering of calls from 140 series numbers is not allowed except for blocking on the DND registry, as any tagging can mislead a customer who has otherwise allowed receipt of such calls from a sector on the DND registry,” it added.Get the latest India news and live updates. Assam budget proposes welfare ban, dismissal for those practising polygamy The Assam government on Friday proposed dismissing government employees found guilty of practising polygamy, according to the state Budget presented by Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah. The Budget also proposed barring people practising polygamy from availing benefits under state-run welfare schemes”Speaker Sir, in order to promote women’s empowerment and gender justice, any male practising polygamy shall not be eligible to avail benefits under any government welfare scheme,” Baruah said, as cited by PTI. The Budget proposed amending the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964, to make government employees found practising polygamy liable for dismissal from service, in accordance with the law.”To promote integrity and responsible citizenship, I propose that any person convicted of an offence under any criminal law shall not be eligible to avail benefits under notified government welfare schemes,” Baruah added. As a regular Budget could not be presented due to the election process, the government will resume its basket of welfare schemes from August onwards, he added.”The august House will appreciate the introduction of unprecedented basket of welfare schemes by our government covering various levels of beneficiaries. I propose to allocate over Rs 6,000 crore under different grants for these welfare schemes,” Baruah said. Baruah presented a Rs 2.85 lakh crore Budget for the 2026-27 financial year, proposing a fourfold increase in the tax exemption limit for small tea growers and a nearly 10-percentage-point cut in VAT on piped natural gas.The Assam Assembly last year passed The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, which seeks to ban polygamous marriages in the state and impose strict penalties on those who enter into or conceal a second marriage while the first remains legally valid.The Bill, introduced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the opening day of the winter session, will apply across Assam, except in Sixth Schedule areas and to members of Scheduled Tribes as defined under the Constitution.The Bill defines polygamy as entering into a marriage while either party already has a legally valid existing marriage or a living spouse from whom they have neither obtained a legal divorce nor had the marriage annulled.It provides for a punishment of up to seven years’ imprisonment and a fine for anyone found guilty of entering into a polygamous marriage.Get the latest India news and live updates. Baruah presented a Rs 2.85 lakh crore Budget for the 2026-27 financial year, proposing a fourfold increase in the tax exemption limit for small tea growers and a nearly 10-percentage-point cut in VAT on piped natural gas.The Assam Assembly last year passed The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, which seeks to ban polygamous marriages in the state and impose strict penalties on those who enter into or conceal a second marriage while the first remains legally valid.The Bill, introduced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the opening day of the winter session, will apply across Assam, except in Sixth Schedule areas and to members of Scheduled Tribes as defined under the Constitution.The Bill defines polygamy as entering into a marriage while either party already has a legally valid existing marriage or a living spouse from whom they have neither obtained a legal divorce nor had the marriage annulled.It provides for a punishment of up to seven years’ imprisonment and a fine for anyone found guilty of entering into a polygamous marriage.Get the latest India news and live updates. BJP MLA questions own government sitting on resolution seeking Bharat Ratna to Savarkar NEW DELHI: In an unusual development, BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar on Friday questioned the BJP-led Maharashtra government in the state assembly over the delay in taking up a resolution seeking the posthumous conferment of the Bharat Ratna on Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar (V D) Savarkar.Raising the matter on the last day of the monsoon session, Mungantiwar said the resolution, which he had moved in the assembly in March, had still not been brought before the House despite an earlier assurance from Speaker Rahul Narwekar.He also used the opportunity to question whether the government’s ideological position had changed after assuming power.”If your ideology has changed after coming to power, then I will never raise this issue again. But your actions do not match the ideology you claim to follow,” PTI quoted him saying.”When a party comes to power, it should not change its ideology. If the government’s stand on this issue has changed, it should say so openly,” he added.In March this year, Mungantiwar had moved a resolution in the assembly seeking the posthumous conferment of Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award, on Savarkar. “Veer Savarkar suffered torture at the hands of the British. At least we should not, even unknowingly, make him suffer through our own delay. We only have to pass a resolution. Does even a file have to suffer for so long? It has been two sessions — from March 5 to July 10,” he said.Expressing disappointment, the senior BJP legislator said, “It pains me that as a worker who has devoted his life to Savarkar’s ideology, our own government appears to be sitting on the file. I regret this deeply. A bench comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana will hear three petitions on Monday NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court will hear a batch of petitions on July 13 seeking an independent and time-bound probe into the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.According to the Supreme Court’s website, a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana will hear three petitions after the apex court reopens on Monday.The pleas seek a court-monitored Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged financial irregularities involving the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which manages the affairs of the Ram temple.Petitioners seek CBI probe, forensic auditOne of the petitions, filed by Narendra Kumar Goswami, seeks a CBI investigation into the alleged embezzlement along with a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) audit of the Trust’s finances.Another petition filed by practising advocates Ajay Kumar Rai and Dinesh Kumar Yadav has sought the constitution of a CBI-led multi-disciplinary Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged financial irregularities and other purported illegalities concerning the Trust’s administration.The petition has also sought directions to the Centre, the Uttar Pradesh government and the Trust to establish regulatory, supervisory and audit mechanisms to safeguard public interest and maintain the confidence of millions of devotees and donors.”Whether or not the reports regarding missing funds and other alleged irregularities concerning the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust are ultimately found to be true, such reports have caused deep concern among the generations that struggled for the restoration of the glory of Ayodhya,” the plea stated.The petition further argued that the Uttar Pradesh government’s SIT began its inquiry without registration of an FIR or any regular criminal case, and said the allegations should be independently verified through a professional agency with expertise in complex financial investigations.A third petition, filed by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Sudhakar Singh, has sought a Supreme Court-monitored CBI probe as well as a forensic audit of the Trust’s entire finances.Investigation underway, eight accused arrestedThe hearing comes as the investigation into the alleged embezzlement continues in Uttar Pradesh.On July 7, an Ayodhya court granted one-day police custody of three of the eight accused arrested in the case — Anukalp Mishra, Lavkush Mishra and Karunesh Pandey. Earlier, on June 29, a local court had sent all eight accused to 14 days of judicial custody.The Uttar Pradesh government had constituted a three-member SIT on June 13 following a request from the temple trust after allegations of misappropriation of donations surfaced.The SIT comprises Lucknow divisional commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, inspector general of police Kiran S and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan.The SIT’s preliminary probe has pointed to serious security lapses in the temple’s counting room and suggested that the alleged theft was “systematic” and repeated rather than isolated.The investigation reportedly found around 70 suspicious incidents between April 27 and June 5 after reviewing CCTV footage, in which counting staff were allegedly seen concealing bundles of cash in their clothes, pockets, shoes and other personal belongings.The preliminary findings also highlighted weaknesses in security arrangements, including the absence of frisking of staff at entry and exit points of the counting hall and inadequate monitoring of personal belongings.Temple trust member backs investigationAmid the ongoing controversy, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Trust member Mahant Dinendra Das Maharaj expressed confidence in the investigation and dismissed reports suggesting that the VIP darshan pass IDs of senior Trust functionaries had been blocked.”There is no issue as of now. This is still in place. I have no details otherwise; the existing system still continues,” he told news agency ANI while confirming that passes continue to be issued using trust general secretary Champat Rai’s ID.On the investigation, he said, “We have faith in Ram Lalla, and the chief minister and the administration are fully aware and involved. We have full faith in the police; they are performing their duty. NEW DELHI: The Joint Committee of Parliament examining the proposed legislation on simultaneous elections is working towards creating a framework that could enable the ‘One Nation, One Election’ model to be implemented by the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, committee chairperson PP Chaudhary told news agency PTI.Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the panel’s two-day meeting in Goa, Chaudhary said consultations held across the country had received overwhelming support from civil society stakeholders for the proposal. He also cited estimates suggesting that frequent elections cost the Indian economy nearly Rs 7 lakh crore.The committee held discussions on the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, beginning its Goa visit with an interaction involving chief minister Pramod Sawant and members of the state cabinet. The deliberations focused on the practical challenges of conducting simultaneous elections and possible ways to address them.”We had an informal interaction with the chief minister and cabinet ministers, who represent the people of Goa. We discussed how ‘One Nation, One Election’ can be implemented, what challenges exist and how they can be mitigated while maintaining a fine balance acceptable to all,” Chaudhary said.He said the panel has already travelled to several states, including Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, where it consulted constitutional experts, educationists, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.According to Chaudhary, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.”We have found that almost 99 per cent of stakeholders, particularly from civil society and various organisations, favour simultaneous elections. The effort now is to evolve a mechanism that is acceptable to all political parties,” he said.Asked about the likely timeline, the BJP MP from Rajasthan’s Pali constituency said the committee was exploring different models that could allow the reform to take effect before the next general election.He added that some states could align their election schedules even earlier if their governments and political parties voluntarily agree to synchronise their electoral cycles.Chaudhary also highlighted the economic case for the proposal, referring to findings presented before the high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind.He said an economic assessment submitted to the Kovind panel estimated that conducting elections separately across the country results in losses of nearly Rs 7 lakh crore, while synchronised polls could produce comparable economic gains.”Elections are now not confined to one state. If elections are held anywhere in the country, they have an impact on other states because the economy is interconnected,” Chaudhary said.Using Goa as an example, he said elections in other states influence tourist arrivals in Goa, while elections in Goa itself affect the state’s tourism sector.”The economy today is globalised. An adverse impact in one state affects other states as well. Frequent elections have economic consequences beyond state boundaries,” he said.Chaudhary also argued that repeated elections interrupt governance and place additional burdens on the education system, as government school teachers are routinely assigned election-related duties such as preparing electoral rolls, training and polling work.”As a result, teaching in government schools suffers. The worst affected are children from economically weaker sections who depend on government schools. This is a serious concern if the situation continues over the coming decades,” he said.Describing simultaneous elections as a key electoral reform envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chaudhary said the initiative would contribute to India’s ambition of becoming a developed nation by 2047.”The details will emerge with time. The surveillance system enables the regulator to remotely monitor institutional functioning, including classroom teaching, clinical activity and compliance with prescribed standards.The Commission said it had repeatedly followed up with colleges that had failed to install the mandated CCTV system or share live feeds despite multiple advisories and communications issued since 2022. It has now directed all such institutions to comply immediately.Responding to the inclusion of RML Hospital on the non-compliance list, the hospital administration told TOI, “We have already discussed this issue and we are sorting it out.””Medical colleges have been given an opportunity to explain the deficiencies. Colleges have been given an opportunity to rectify deficiencies, but if shortcomings persist during subsequent MARB assessments, appropriate regulatory action will follow,”MARB president Prof MK Ramesh told TOI.The official said the new mechanism has been introduced to ensure that academic activities are not disrupted while enabling continuous oversight of medical colleges. Unlike the earlier system, where institutions prepared for scheduled inspections, colleges will now be expected to remain compliant throughout the academic year.Officials said deficiencies commonly relate to infrastructure, faculty availability and clinical load. Depending on the nature and severity of violations detected during follow-up assessments, the Commission may reduce student intake, withdraw seats or suspend admissions.The regulator has also standardised the format of renewal letters, replacing the earlier practice of issuing different formats to different institutions. Officials said the move is aimed at bringing greater uniformity and transparency to the renewal process.The new framework is expected to discourage temporary compliance ahead of inspections and ensure that institutions maintain prescribed standards on a continuous basis. The country’s food safety regulator has put alcoholic beverage manufacturers under the scanner, issuing notices over alleged use of unauthorised added flavours and misleading age-related claims on product labels.Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to manufacturers after finding alleged violations of the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018. The companies have been asked to explain why action should not be initiated against them under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.Among the violations flagged is the alleged use of added flavours in alcoholic beverages where such additives are prohibited. Under the regulations, products such as brandy, gin, rum, vodka and whisky must derive their characteristic flavour solely from the raw materials used and the manufacturing process.FSSAI also objected to products carrying the word “aged” or other age-related claims without the mandatory disclosure that the declared age refers to the youngest spirit used in the blend, as required under the regulations. The regulator said the omission could mislead consumers about the product’s actual age.In a statement, Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies said FSSAI has called for consultations across stakeholders, including industry associations, next week for discussions. “All our members strictly follow all laid norms and guidelines mandated by FSSAI,” it said.The notices also ask manufacturers to explain why enforcement action should not be initiated for the alleged violations. The department has not disclosed how many manufacturers have been served notices. Officials said a meeting of stakeholders has been scheduled for July 14 to discuss the issue.The action comes as the regulator sharpens its focus on truthful labelling and product claims across food categories, with increasing scrutiny of misleading declarations and regulatory compliance.Get the latest India news and live updates. While New Delhi and Mumbai showed no change from last year, 10 Chinese cities improved their ranking this year compared to 2025. The trio of artefacts Australia will return NEW DELHI: Three artefacts of cultural significance – a ceremonial bronze trident of Goddess Bhadrakali, a granite idol of sacred bull Nandi and a basalt sculpture depicting six-headed Karttikeya – originally from temples in Tamil Nadu are set to be repatriated to India from Australia.PM Narendra Modi and counterpart Anthony Albanese welcomed the voluntary return of the artefacts – dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries – from National Gallery of Australia and Art Gallery of New South Wales. Albanese also welcomed the move to repatriate the remains of ‘Australian First Nations ancestor’ from Govt Museum of Chennai.The trident with Goddess Bhadrakali’s image was crafted in the South Indian temple ritual metalwork tradition. It originated from Sri Kasiviswanathaswamy Temple in Kollumangudi. The Nandi idol from the same temple was sculpted in the Tamil Shaiva temple tradition, featuring compact proportions and ornamental detailing.
