New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on Thursday announced that 57 per cent of the country’s exports to India will be “tariff-free from day one” under the proposed India-New Zealand trade deal, a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic two-day state visit to the country.Taking to social media platform X, Luxon said the agreement would provide a major boost to New Zealand businesses by expanding their access to the Indian market.”New Zealand businesses are set to boom with our India Trade Deal.” He added, “57% of everything we export to India will be tariff free from day one.”The announcement comes ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to New Zealand from July 10 to 11, which follows an invitation from his Kiwi counterpart. Congress targets PM Modi for giving China ‘clean chit’ NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday accused the BJP of increasing India’s economic dependence on China despite the 2020 Galwan clash, alleging that Beijing has gained a dominant position in several strategic sectors under the current administration.Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, citing a media report and official trade data, claimed that Chinese imports had expanded significantly across industries critical to India’s economy, including pharmaceuticals, electric vehicles and renewable energy.”Six years ago, PM Narendra Modi handed over a clean chit to China after our 20 brave soldiers made the supreme sacrifice in Galwan. Our bravehearts chose martyrdom, but the Modi government has surrendered India’s interests to China,” Kharge said in a post on X.Kharge alleged that India’s imports from China had risen by 101.81 per cent since the Galwan clash, pushing the bilateral trade deficit to USD 112.1 billion in 2025-26.He claimed China supplied 86 per cent of India’s antibiotic imports and accounted for nearly 74 per cent of imports of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), bulk drugs and drug intermediates during 2024-25.The Congress chief also alleged that 66 per cent of India’s electric vehicle component imports originated from China, while nearly three-fourths of imported lithium-ion batteries used in Indian EVs were Chinese. He further claimed that China supplied around 93 per cent of India’s permanent magnet imports in 2025-26.On the renewable energy sector, Kharge alleged that China supplied more than 99 per cent of India’s undiffused silicon wafer imports in 2025-26, calling it a near-total dominance of a sector that the government has identified as central to its Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.The Congress leader also criticised the Centre’s reported decision to allow four Chinese companies to bid for government power projects, alleging that it had “rolled out the red carpet” for what he referred to as PM Modi’s “Jhoola Friend”.He further alleged that China continued to encroach on Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh and claimed Beijing’s role in Pakistan’s actions during Operation Sindoor had been acknowledged by the Deputy Chief of Army Staff.”Modi government has hurt India’s national interests by letting Beijing capture India’s most critical industries since Galwan. Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik (L-R) NEW DELHI: Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Prakash Chik Baraik formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kolkata on Thursday, weeks after resigning from the TMC amid growing rebellion within the party.The three leaders were inducted into the BJP at the party’s Salt Lake office in the presence of West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and other senior leaders. Bhattacharya welcomed them by presenting BJP flags and said their political experience would strengthen the party in the state.Their induction comes as the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC continues to face internal turmoil following its defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections. The crisis began after a large group of MLAs broke away under the leadership of expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, with several MPs also backing the rival camp. Rebel MPs have sought separate seating arrangements in Parliament and have held meetings with senior BJP leaders, fuelling speculation about more defections.Reacting to the development, senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said the party had given Sukhendu Sekhar Ray political opportunities that he did not receive before joining the TMC.Speaking to reporters, Ghosh said, “See everyone knows that Sukhendu Sekhar, who is a senior leader, prior to 2011, he never became MP or MLA. Respecting him, Mamata Banerjee sent him to Rajya Sabha. Today he joined BJP… They did not leave when Mamata Banerjee was the CM, public is seeing everything.”The three leaders had resigned from both the TMC and as Rajya Sabha leaders last month.After quitting the party, Sushmita Dev said her decision was based on both political and personal reasons.”It is a long story why I left TMC. I don’t want to be in a situation where I am in two boats at the same time. I will not comment on Mamata Didi,” she had said.She added, “I had political and personal reasons to do this. In an independent country, a politician can take any decision in their political life. I express gratitude towards the people of Bengal, but I have to work in Assam.”Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, who was among the first senior leaders to resign, had launched a sharp attack on the TMC after stepping down. He blamed the party’s electoral defeat on what he described as years of poor governance and had also alleged that he could have been targeted had he resigned during the RG Kar hospital controversy.”I have met Rajya Sabha chairman and submitted my resignation. I have conveyed my decision to resigning from the party through WhatsApp and email to Mamata Banerjee. I had my tenure till 2029 in the Rajya Sabha, but I have resigned in principle from the party as it would be difficult for me to continue,” he added further,” Ray wrote in his resignation letter. Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from the Rajya Sabha shortly after Dev and Ray, further deepening concerns over dissent within the TMC.”I hereby resign from the membership of the Rajya Sabha. Kindly accept my resignation with immediate effect,” Baraik wrote in his letter.The political crisis has intensified in recent weeks, with reports suggesting that around 20 Lok Sabha MPs have aligned with the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee. Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik (L-R) NEW DELHI: Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Prakash Chik Baraik formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kolkata on Thursday, weeks after resigning from the TMC amid growing rebellion within the party.The three leaders were inducted into the BJP at the party’s Salt Lake office in the presence of West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and other senior leaders. Bhattacharya welcomed them by presenting BJP flags and said their political experience would strengthen the party in the state.Their induction comes as the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC continues to face internal turmoil following its defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections. The crisis began after a large group of MLAs broke away under the leadership of expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, with several MPs also backing the rival camp. Rebel MPs have sought separate seating arrangements in Parliament and have held meetings with senior BJP leaders, fuelling speculation about more defections.Reacting to the development, senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said the party had given Sukhendu Sekhar Ray political opportunities that he did not receive before joining the TMC.Speaking to reporters, Ghosh said, “See everyone knows that Sukhendu Sekhar, who is a senior leader, prior to 2011, he never became MP or MLA. Respecting him, Mamata Banerjee sent him to Rajya Sabha. Today he joined BJP… They did not leave when Mamata Banerjee was the CM, public is seeing everything.”The three leaders had resigned from both the TMC and as Rajya Sabha leaders last month.After quitting the party, Sushmita Dev said her decision was based on both political and personal reasons.”It is a long story why I left TMC. I don’t want to be in a situation where I am in two boats at the same time. I will not comment on Mamata Didi,” she had said.She added, “I had political and personal reasons to do this. In an independent country, a politician can take any decision in their political life. I express gratitude towards the people of Bengal, but I have to work in Assam.”Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, who was among the first senior leaders to resign, had launched a sharp attack on the TMC after stepping down. He blamed the party’s electoral defeat on what he described as years of poor governance and had also alleged that he could have been targeted had he resigned during the RG Kar hospital controversy.”I have met Rajya Sabha chairman and submitted my resignation. I have conveyed my decision to resigning from the party through WhatsApp and email to Mamata Banerjee. I had my tenure till 2029 in the Rajya Sabha, but I have resigned in principle from the party as it would be difficult for me to continue,” he added further,” Ray wrote in his resignation letter. Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from the Rajya Sabha shortly after Dev and Ray, further deepening concerns over dissent within the TMC.”I hereby resign from the membership of the Rajya Sabha. Kindly accept my resignation with immediate effect,” Baraik wrote in his letter.The political crisis has intensified in recent weeks, with reports suggesting that around 20 Lok Sabha MPs have aligned with the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee. The dissident camp has claimed it represents the “real TMC” while ruling out any merger with the Congress.Meanwhile, Mamata in a video address accused the rival faction of betraying the party.”People shouldn’t forgive TMC leaders who are traitors, sided with BJP; don’t try to sail on two boats, there’s still time to look back and address barbarity,” she said.Get the latest India news and live updates. ‘Purab mat jaiyo more Rajaji …’Passed down through generations, this folk song still echoes the reality of many villages in Bihar, where the men are forced to leave in search of greener pastures.Migration has long been woven into Bihar’s social and cultural landscape. But long-standing gaps in local employment, combined with rising aspirations, have increased the pace of out-migration from villages in recent years.And what is left behind? A patch of land, a half-finished brick house and, most importantly, women who are left to hold everything together.Migration and BiharBihar has long functioned as country’s great labour reservoir.In the early 19th century, young men from this region migrated because of widespread poverty and underdevelopment. After Independence, the trend continued, with migration largely directed towards India’s more developed states.Even today, Biharis can be found across the country in a wide range of roles: from running small businesses like tea stalls in Jammu and Kashmir, working in factories in Gujarat and Maharashtra, and contributing to agriculture in Punjab and Haryana, to taking up skilled, professional and entrepreneurial roles in rapidly growing cities.The decline of traditional industries, including sugar, jute, rice, flour, pulse, oil and paper mills, along with the slow expansion of local employment opportunities, has kept job creation a major challenge in Bihar.The exodus is visible at almost every railway station in the state, where trains bound for other parts of India are packed with young men leaving for a mix of aspiration and economic necessity.An estimated three crore Biharis now work outside the state. Roughly one in four adults and two out of every three households have a family member living away.Migration is no longer confined to the poor. It cuts across caste, class and community. Yet it remains overwhelmingly male, with women accounting for barely five per cent of migrants.The rural milieuMen leave villages in Bihar, often with the aspiration of providing a better standard of living for their families. However, remittances are not the only outcome. Male out-migration also skews the demography of villages and alters the dynamics of families.Just 36km from Patna, Baikatpur village offers a glimpse into the human cost of Bihar’s migration story.Ashok Kumar Dutta, a resident of the village, describes the situation as “dystopian”.Speaking to The Times of India, he says men from almost every household have left in search of work in bigger cities. While migration has marginally improved the economic condition of some families, it has also left behind villages inhabited largely by women, children and the elderly.”When people leave, they don’t take their entire families with them. Those who migrate rarely earn as much as they had hoped. As a result, instead of improving, the family’s economic condition often worsens,” Dutta told TOI.”The women left behind, and even the elderly and children, are forced to take up whatever small jobs they can to make ends meet. Women from the poorest households have little choice but to work in the fields, transplanting paddy and taking up daily-wage labour,” he added.Subhash Kumar, founder of Samadhan Kendra, an NGO in Vaishali district that works with women’s self-help groups, paints a similar picture.He says large-scale migration has drained the village economy and created an acute labour shortage. Even families planning to build a house often struggle to find enough workers.”If you look at the villages today, it’s only natural that there are fewer young people. There are simply no sources of income here. When there are no jobs locally, young people have no option but to leave,” Subhash Kumar told The Times of India.”Why do they migrate? Because they believe they can earn better elsewhere. Their calculations may not always work out, but they still see more opportunities outside Bihar than at home,” he added.The role of womenIt is encouraging when women in any society become economically and socially independent. In Bihar, however, this shift has often come out of necessity rather than choice. Many women have had to take on additional responsibilities beyond the household, including roles that were earlier less commonly undertaken by them.Subhash Kumar says a family cannot survive on the meagre remittances sent by migrants alone. To generate extra income, women often rear livestock or take up daily-wage work to keep the household running.”Today, it is simply not possible for an entire household to survive on the husband’s earnings alone. Suppose the husband is working outside the state and sends home Rs 5,000 or Rs 10,000 every month. A family cannot survive on that money alone. If there’s a wedding in the extended family, a social function, a medical emergency or any unexpected expense, they need extra,” Subhash Kumar said.”Now imagine the husband falls ill or is unable to send money for two or three months. How will the household manage? In such situations, women take up daily-wage work. They work in the fields or wherever they can find work locally. If there is no work available, they rear cows, buffaloes or goats. Whatever little income they earn from livestock helps keep the household running,” he added.Nabanipa Bhattacharjee, sociology professor at Sri Venkateswara College, says seasonal migration, which is prevalent in Bihar, often creates a temporary gender imbalance in villages, with women outnumbering men for much of the year.”Migration has pushed women into roles they didn’t traditionally occupy. They now manage agriculture, run households, look after children and the elderly, and handle finances sent back as remittances. You can call it the feminisation of agriculture,” Professor Bhattacharjee told The Times of India.”While the men are away, women have to manage everything. However, the right to take important decisions still largely remains with the men,” she added.Professor Bhattacharjee said that despite the growing role of women in villages, their workload and emotional stress from spousal separation have surged.”While seasonal migration temporarily skews village populations toward women and expands their roles, it doesn’t automatically translate into greater social status or authority,” she said.The fragile economicsThe Bihar government has launched several welfare schemes to make women in rural areas financially independent and improve the long-term viability of women-led enterprises. Schemes such as the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana provide a grant of Rs 10,000 to women from households, with additional assistance of up to Rs 2 lakh linked to the progress of their enterprises.Jeevika is another poverty-alleviation programme that aims to empower rural women socially and economically by organising them into self-help groups. These groups help women save money, learn new skills, start small businesses and become part of the formal economy.Jeevika has mobilised more than 1.4 crore women across Bihar into self-help groups, creating one of the largest women’s collectives in the world.Initiatives such as self-help groups and community-based livelihood programmes like Jeevika have expanded women’s economic participation by promoting collective entrepreneurship and creating local livelihood opportunities. But for many families, migration still determines whether these efforts succeed.According to Subhash Kumar, however, these schemes also operate within a difficult rural economy. He says that direct financial support can help women start work, but low purchasing power in villages and dependence on remittances continue to shape whether small enterprises survive.”Most women here take loans, but even those loans depend on the men in the family. Suppose the husband has migrated for work. As long as he keeps sending money home, the loan instalments are paid on time. But if, for some reason, the money stops coming for two months, four months or even six months, how can the family avoid defaulting?” he told The Times of India.That is the paradox of migration in Bihar. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday reprimanded municipal authorities in Delhi, Gurugram, Lucknow, Patna and Tamil Nadu over illegal constructions and sought reports on the action taken to demolish or shut down unsafe buildings that pose a serious risk to public safety.A bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and R Mahadevan took note of the recent building collapse in Delhi’s Saket and fire incidents in Malviya Nagar and Lucknow’s Aliganj. It directed the constitution of a special team comprising two senior professors from IIT Delhi and two draftsmen to conduct a time-bound ground survey of Saket, Malviya Nagar and Lajpat Nagar.The officials concerned have also been directed to remain physically present before the court on the next date of hearing on August 4.”We make it clear that there should be no slackness with regard to the committee giving an honest report. If any doubt is raised, we may send a special team from this Court to ensure the honesty of the report,” the apex court said.The bench also warned that accountability would be fixed if authorities failed to act.”We indicate that if, on the next date, we find that no action has been taken, straightaway responsibility would be fixed upon the CEO of the said authority,” it added.Agreeing with the amicus curiae’s submission that authorities were adopting a “face-saving approach” by arresting only builders after building collapses and fire incidents, while taking no action against officials responsible for failing to curb illegal constructions, the court directed the authorities to disclose in their reports the names of senior officials accountable for such failures.In its May 20 order, the court had directed the authorities to take “immediate and effective measures”, including sealing and demolition, against illegal and unauthorised constructions identified during surveys. NEW DELHI: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday announced the formation of a seven-member panel, headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Desai, to draft legislation for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC).The committee comprises former high court judges R C Chavan and S G Mehare, former Maharashtra chief secretary D K Jain, former advocate general Virendra Saraf, constitutional expert Ramesh Patange and educationist Suvarna Rawal, Fadnavis told the legislative assembly.He said the committee is expected to submit its report within six months. “We will make efforts to introduce the legislation in the winter session of the state legislature in Nagpur,” he said.Referring to the Directive Principles of State Policy in the Constitution, Fadnavis said, “Accordingly, a seven-member committee has been constituted under the chairpersonship of Justice (Retd.) Ranjana Desai to prepare a framework for implementing a Uniform Civil Code.”Before Maharashtra, Assam and Gujarat had also begun drafting legislation for a Uniform Civil Code, while Uttarakhand became the first state after Independence to enact one. Maharashtra is expected to closely study Uttarakhand’s experience while preparing its own draft.Earlier, Fadnavis reiterated the government’s commitment to introducing the law and said the concept of a Uniform Civil Code finds support in the Directive Principles of State Policy enshrined in the Constitution.Referring to the vision of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, he argued that a common civil framework would uphold the constitutional values of equality and uniformity in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.Reacting to the development, senior Congress leader Sachin Sawant said, “The Directive Principles of State Policy, which include the provision relating to a Uniform Civil Code, were actually a contribution of former PM Jawaharlal Nehru ji to the Constitution.” He added that Fadnavis could also have acknowledged Nehru’s contribution while referring to the constitutional origins of the UCC debate.Sawant further said the constitutional provision envisaged a consensus-based approach and stressed the need for extensive consultations before drafting such legislation.Meanwhile, welcoming the government’s move, Manisha Kayande said support for a Uniform Civil Code has long been an ideological position of the Shiv Sena. She said the late Bal Thackeray aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party on three key issues — construction of the Ram Temple, the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, and the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code.Kayande said the Shiv Sena has consistently backed the idea of a common civil law for all citizens, irrespective of religion, and welcomed the chief minister’s announcement. (PTI) NEW DELHI: Large parts of India woke up to grey skies, waterlogged roads and traffic disruptions on Thursday as relentless overnight rain continued across several states, even as the southwest monsoon covered the entire country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued fresh red and orange alerts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in several regions.From Delhi to Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttarakhand and several northeastern states, heavy monsoon showers triggered waterlogging, uprooted trees, transport disruptions, landslides and rescue operations, while authorities remained on high alert.The IMD also issued district-wise nowcast warnings for the next two to three hours, cautioning residents about intense rainfall, lightning and strong winds in several parts of the country.For Delhi and Haryana, the weather office issued a red alert, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of around 60 kmph.”Red Warnings: Lightning/Thunderstorms with gusty winds (around 60 kmph) and heavy rain (>15 mm/h) very likely over following districts in: Haryana: Faridabad, Karnal, Palwal, Panchkula, Panipat, Sonipat, Yamunanagar,” IMD posted.It also warned of similar conditions across all districts of the national capital. “Delhi: Central Delhi, East Delhi, New Delhi, North Delhi, North East Delhi, North West Delhi, Shahadra, South Delhi, South East Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi.”The IMD also issued orange alerts for parts of Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir.”Orange warnings: Thunderstorms & Lightning with gusty winds (40-60 kmph) and moderate rain (5-15 mm/h) very likely over following districts in: Kerala: Ernakulam, Thrissur.” The alert also covers several districts in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.Delhi & NCR reels under heavy rainDelhi witnessed another spell of intense overnight rainfall, leaving several roads submerged and uprooting trees across the city. The IMD issued a red alert for the capital. The capital’s base weather station in Safdarjung recorded 72.6 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am in the day.Other stations also recorded significant rainfall:Lodhi Road – 80.2 mmRidge – 77.8 mmPalam – 63 mmAyanagar – 57.4 mmThe minimum temperature settled at 24.3 degrees Celsius, around 3.6 degrees below normal. The weather office warned of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning through the day. Strong winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are expected across all districts of Delhi. Officials said weather conditions are likely to improve gradually after July 9 as the monsoon trough shifts further north.Roads flooded, traffic hitSeveral parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region witnessed severe waterlogging, severely disrupting traffic and the daily commute. Major waterlogging was reported from Vikas Marg, Munirka, Sadar Bazar, Geeta Colony, Dwarka, East Delhi and the New Delhi Railway Station area. Traffic crawled on key roads, including the Delhi-Noida Expressway, as vehicles struggled through flooded stretches, leading to long delays and congestion during the morning rush hour. Two trees were uprooted on Raja Dhir Singh Marg in East of Kailash, disrupting vehicular movement.In Noida, roads in Sector 115, Sector 75, Sector 16 Film City and adjoining areas remained submerged, forcing commuters to wade through knee-deep water.Ghaziabad faces floodingGhaziabad also witnessed widespread waterlogging, particularly in Shastrinagar, Kaushambi and Indirapuram, where flooded roads triggered long traffic jams and disrupted daily life.In a separate incident, a road caved in near Atal Chowk in Vasundhara following heavy rainfall, causing a car and a scooter to fall into the ditch. The incident further highlighted the impact of the relentless downpour on the city’s infrastructure.Despite receiving one of the season’s heaviest spells of rain, civic authorities said extensive pre-monsoon desilting of drains helped prevent widespread flooding at several vulnerable locations, including the NHPC Chowk underpass.Building collapse claims three livesHeavy rain also proved fatal in northwest Delhi’s Rohini, where a four-storey under-construction building collapsed on Wednesday evening. The death toll rose to three after rescue teams recovered two more bodies overnight, PTI reported.Gurugram struggles with flooded roadsNeighbouring Gurugram continued to grapple with severe waterlogging after receiving 115 mm of rainfall over the past 33 hours, with large parts of the city witnessing massive traffic snarls.Major roads, including the Delhi-Jaipur Highway service lane near Narsinghpur, Sohna Road, Kadipur and Basai, remained choked for hours as several vehicles broke down after getting stranded in flooded stretches, leaving commuters stuck in long queues.Officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority and traffic police worked through the night to pump out water and regulate traffic.The city’s drainage system came under pressure after receiving 83 mm rainfall on Tuesday and another 32 mm on Wednesday.Maharashtra continues to battle monsoon furyHeavy rain continued to affect large parts of Maharashtra, where rain-related incidents have claimed more than 50 lives so far this monsoon. Mumbai woke up to cloudy skies with comparatively lighter rain after several days of relentless downpours.According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city recorded:Island city – 14.21 mmEastern suburbs – 39.37 mmWestern suburbs – 28.85 mm over the previous 24 hours.The IMD has forecast intermittent light to moderate rain during the day, with isolated heavy showers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. Public transport largely returned to normal, although suburban trains continued running five to ten minutes behind schedule.Western Railway officials confirmed there was no waterlogging between Vasai Road and Virar after days of disruption. However, Mumbai-Pune rail services continued to face delays following recent landslides in the Bhor Ghat section.Civic officials also said Tulsi Lake, one of Mumbai’s seven drinking water reservoirs, began overflowing following heavy rainfall in its catchment.Raigad floodwaters sweep away 3,000 LPG cylindersIn Maharashtra’s Raigad district, around 3,000 LPG cylinders were swept away after a protective wall at the HPCL Patalganga LPG Bottling Plant collapsed due to heavy rainfall.Videos circulating on social media showed hundreds of cylinders floating down the swollen Patalganga River, drawing large crowds of onlookers.Officials said relentless rain caused floodwaters to breach the plant’s boundary wall, allowing the strong current to wash the cylinders into the Patalganga River and Kharpada Creek.Three killed, hundreds evacuated in ThaneMonsoon-related incidents have claimed three lives and forced the evacuation of nearly 800 people across Thane district over the past week.According to the district administration, fatalities were reported from Thane city, Ambernath and Mira Bhayander, while 11 people have been injured in various rain-related incidents this season.In the latest incident, two people, including a teenage girl, were injured after lightning struck Murbad taluka on Wednesday. Officials said both are undergoing treatment and are out of danger. Authorities are also searching for two boys who drowned in separate incidents in Bhiwandi earlier this week.Kerala continues to receive heavy rainHeavy rain persisted across Kerala in the day, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert for Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts. Yellow alerts were also issued for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod.The weather department said an orange alert indicates very heavy rainfall between 115 mm and 204 mm, while a yellow alert signifies rainfall between 64 mm and 115 mm. The downpour uprooted trees and damaged houses in several districts.Death toll rises in Wayanad landslideRescue teams recovered another body from the landslide-hit tunnel construction site in Wayanad, taking the death toll to five. Four people remain missing, ANI reported.The landslide struck the Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel project near Kalladi on July 7, burying workers under several feet of mud and debris.Among those killed was Anmol Dodrai, a worker from Jharkhand’s Khunti district. His mortal remains were flown to Ranchi before being taken to his native village. NDRF personnel and other rescue agencies continued to search through thick sludge and massive boulders for the missing workers.Red alert for UttarakhandHeavy rain also lashed Uttarakhand, triggering landslides and widespread waterlogging. A landslide near Kaddukhal on National Highway 707A in Tehri Garhwal damaged an abandoned building after excavation work destabilised the hillside.Officials said nearby restaurants, roadside kiosks and temporary labour shelters had already been evacuated as a precaution. Meanwhile, Haridwar witnessed severe flooding after continuous overnight rainfall.The IMD issued a red alert for Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal for the next three hours, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in areas including:LaksarManglaurKhanpurGumkhalDugaddaKotdwarDevranaResidents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain away from rivers, streams and landslide-prone areas.Pune building collapse rescue continuesRescue teams pulled out two more survivors from the debris of a collapsed building at a waste management plant in Pimpri Chinchwad near Pune, taking the number of rescued people to nine. The three-storey structure collapsed on Wednesday after a massive garbage mound crashed into it, according to PTI.The operation is being carried out jointly by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, fire brigade and local administration. Officials said rescue efforts are continuing to trace those still trapped.Flooding reported in GujaratHeavy rain continued to affect several parts of Gujarat. In Surat’s Sarthana area, seawater entered residential neighbourhoods after heavy rainfall, while roads in the Magob area remained waterlogged, affecting normal life.Residents reported severe disruption to traffic and daily activities.Northeast braces for more rainThe IMD has forecast widespread heavy rainfall across the Northeast till July 14.According to the weather department:Assam and Meghalaya are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy showers during July 10–14.Arunachal Pradesh is expected to witness heavy rainfall over the same period.Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are also likely to receive isolated heavy rain.Visuals show the swollen Brahmaputra River trigger severe erosion in the Mohnaghat area in Assam’s Dibrugarh, prompting authorities to begin protective measures.Heavy rain forecast for Tamil Nadu’s NilgirisThe IMD has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in the Nilgiris district. Moderate rainfall is also expected over districts along the Western Ghats, while Chennai is likely to witness generally cloudy skies with light rain in isolated areas. (PTI) NEW DELHI: Large parts of India woke up to grey skies, waterlogged roads and traffic disruptions on Thursday as relentless overnight rain continued across several states, even as the southwest monsoon covered the entire country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued fresh red and orange alerts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in several regions.From Delhi to Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttarakhand and several northeastern states, heavy monsoon showers triggered waterlogging, uprooted trees, transport disruptions, landslides and rescue operations, while authorities remained on high alert.The IMD also issued district-wise nowcast warnings for the next two to three hours, cautioning residents about intense rainfall, lightning and strong winds in several parts of the country.For Delhi and Haryana, the weather office issued a red alert, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of around 60 kmph.”Red Warnings: Lightning/Thunderstorms with gusty winds (around 60 kmph) and heavy rain (>15 mm/h) very likely over following districts in: Haryana: Faridabad, Karnal, Palwal, Panchkula, Panipat, Sonipat, Yamunanagar,” IMD posted.It also warned of similar conditions across all districts of the national capital. “Delhi: Central Delhi, East Delhi, New Delhi, North Delhi, North East Delhi, North West Delhi, Shahadra, South Delhi, South East Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi.”The IMD also issued orange alerts for parts of Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir.”Orange warnings: Thunderstorms & Lightning with gusty winds (40-60 kmph) and moderate rain (5-15 mm/h) very likely over following districts in: Kerala: Ernakulam, Thrissur.” The alert also covers several districts in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.Delhi & NCR reels under heavy rainDelhi witnessed another spell of intense overnight rainfall, leaving several roads submerged and uprooting trees across the city. The IMD issued a red alert for the capital. The capital’s base weather station in Safdarjung recorded 72.6 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am in the day.Other stations also recorded significant rainfall:Lodhi Road – 80.2 mmRidge – 77.8 mmPalam – 63 mmAyanagar – 57.4 mmThe minimum temperature settled at 24.3 degrees Celsius, around 3.6 degrees below normal. The weather office warned of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning through the day. Strong winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are expected across all districts of Delhi. Officials said weather conditions are likely to improve gradually after July 9 as the monsoon trough shifts further north.Roads flooded, traffic hitSeveral parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region witnessed severe waterlogging, severely disrupting traffic and the daily commute. Major waterlogging was reported from Vikas Marg, Munirka, Sadar Bazar, Geeta Colony, Dwarka, East Delhi and the New Delhi Railway Station area. Traffic crawled on key roads, including the Delhi-Noida Expressway, as vehicles struggled through flooded stretches, leading to long delays and congestion during the morning rush hour. Two trees were uprooted on Raja Dhir Singh Marg in East of Kailash, disrupting vehicular movement.In Noida, roads in Sector 115, Sector 75, Sector 16 Film City and adjoining areas remained submerged, forcing commuters to wade through knee-deep water.Ghaziabad faces floodingGhaziabad also witnessed widespread waterlogging, particularly in Shastrinagar, Kaushambi and Indirapuram, where flooded roads triggered long traffic jams and disrupted daily life.In a separate incident, a road caved in near Atal Chowk in Vasundhara following heavy rainfall, causing a car and a scooter to fall into the ditch. The incident further highlighted the impact of the relentless downpour on the city’s infrastructure.Despite receiving one of the season’s heaviest spells of rain, civic authorities said extensive pre-monsoon desilting of drains helped prevent widespread flooding at several vulnerable locations, including the NHPC Chowk underpass.Building collapse claims three livesHeavy rain also proved fatal in northwest Delhi’s Rohini, where a four-storey under-construction building collapsed on Wednesday evening. The death toll rose to three after rescue teams recovered two more bodies overnight, PTI reported.Gurugram struggles with flooded roadsNeighbouring Gurugram continued to grapple with severe waterlogging after receiving 115 mm of rainfall over the past 33 hours, with large parts of the city witnessing massive traffic snarls.Major roads, including the Delhi-Jaipur Highway service lane near Narsinghpur, Sohna Road, Kadipur and Basai, remained choked for hours as several vehicles broke down after getting stranded in flooded stretches, leaving commuters stuck in long queues.Officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority and traffic police worked through the night to pump out water and regulate traffic.The city’s drainage system came under pressure after receiving 83 mm rainfall on Tuesday and another 32 mm on Wednesday.Maharashtra continues to battle monsoon furyHeavy rain continued to affect large parts of Maharashtra, where rain-related incidents have claimed more than 50 lives so far this monsoon. Mumbai woke up to cloudy skies with comparatively lighter rain after several days of relentless downpours.According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city recorded:Island city – 14.21 mmEastern suburbs – 39.37 mmWestern suburbs – 28.85 mm over the previous 24 hours.The IMD has forecast intermittent light to moderate rain during the day, with isolated heavy showers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. Public transport largely returned to normal, although suburban trains continued running five to ten minutes behind schedule.Western Railway officials confirmed there was no waterlogging between Vasai Road and Virar after days of disruption. However, Mumbai-Pune rail services continued to face delays following recent landslides in the Bhor Ghat section.Civic officials also said Tulsi Lake, one of Mumbai’s seven drinking water reservoirs, began overflowing following heavy rainfall in its catchment.Raigad floodwaters sweep away 3,000 LPG cylindersIn Maharashtra’s Raigad district, around 3,000 LPG cylinders were swept away after a protective wall at the HPCL Patalganga LPG Bottling Plant collapsed due to heavy rainfall.Videos circulating on social media showed hundreds of cylinders floating down the swollen Patalganga River, drawing large crowds of onlookers.Officials said relentless rain caused floodwaters to breach the plant’s boundary wall, allowing the strong current to wash the cylinders into the Patalganga River and Kharpada Creek.Three killed, hundreds evacuated in ThaneMonsoon-related incidents have claimed three lives and forced the evacuation of nearly 800 people across Thane district over the past week.According to the district administration, fatalities were reported from Thane city, Ambernath and Mira Bhayander, while 11 people have been injured in various rain-related incidents this season.In the latest incident, two people, including a teenage girl, were injured after lightning struck Murbad taluka on Wednesday. Officials said both are undergoing treatment and are out of danger. Authorities are also searching for two boys who drowned in separate incidents in Bhiwandi earlier this week.Kerala continues to receive heavy rainHeavy rain persisted across Kerala in the day, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert for Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts. Yellow alerts were also issued for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod.The weather department said an orange alert indicates very heavy rainfall between 115 mm and 204 mm, while a yellow alert signifies rainfall between 64 mm and 115 mm. The downpour uprooted trees and damaged houses in several districts.Death toll rises in Wayanad landslideRescue teams recovered another body from the landslide-hit tunnel construction site in Wayanad, taking the death toll to five. Four people remain missing, ANI reported.The landslide struck the Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel project near Kalladi on July 7, burying workers under several feet of mud and debris.Among those killed was Anmol Dodrai, a worker from Jharkhand’s Khunti district. His mortal remains were flown to Ranchi before being taken to his native village. NDRF personnel and other rescue agencies continued to search through thick sludge and massive boulders for the missing workers.Red alert for UttarakhandHeavy rain also lashed Uttarakhand, triggering landslides and widespread waterlogging. A landslide near Kaddukhal on National Highway 707A in Tehri Garhwal damaged an abandoned building after excavation work destabilised the hillside.Officials said nearby restaurants, roadside kiosks and temporary labour shelters had already been evacuated as a precaution. Meanwhile, Haridwar witnessed severe flooding after continuous overnight rainfall.The IMD issued a red alert for Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal for the next three hours, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in areas including:LaksarManglaurKhanpurGumkhalDugaddaKotdwarDevranaResidents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain away from rivers, streams and landslide-prone areas.Pune building collapse rescue continuesRescue teams pulled out two more survivors from the debris of a collapsed building at a waste management plant in Pimpri Chinchwad near Pune, taking the number of rescued people to nine. The three-storey structure collapsed on Wednesday after a massive garbage mound crashed into it, according to PTI.The operation is being carried out jointly by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, fire brigade and local administration. Officials said rescue efforts are continuing to trace those still trapped.Flooding reported in GujaratHeavy rain continued to affect several parts of Gujarat. In Surat’s Sarthana area, seawater entered residential neighbourhoods after heavy rainfall, while roads in the Magob area remained waterlogged, affecting normal life.Residents reported severe disruption to traffic and daily activities.Northeast braces for more rainThe IMD has forecast widespread heavy rainfall across the Northeast till July 14.According to the weather department:Assam and Meghalaya are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy showers during July 10–14.Arunachal Pradesh is expected to witness heavy rainfall over the same period.Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are also likely to receive isolated heavy rain.Visuals show the swollen Brahmaputra River trigger severe erosion in the Mohnaghat area in Assam’s Dibrugarh, prompting authorities to begin protective measures.Heavy rain forecast for Tamil Nadu’s NilgirisThe IMD has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in the Nilgiris district. Moderate rainfall is also expected over districts along the Western Ghats, while Chennai is likely to witness generally cloudy skies with light rain in isolated areas. The United States Embassy in New Delhi on Thursday said student visa applications are being processed in accordance with established regulations, amid reports of delays in securing visa interview appointments.Responding to queries on the issue, a spokesperson for the US Embassy said, “The United States government is committed to processing visas in accordance with established regulations and guidelines to ensure that qualified applicants are approved for study in the United States while maintaining national security.”The spokesperson added that every application is assessed individually.”All student visa applications are adjudicated on a case-by-case basis in strict accordance with established regulations and guidelines,” the spokesperson said.Applicants were advised to rely on official sources for updates on interview wait times and visa processing schedules.”For current estimated visa interview wait times and processing schedules, applicants should consult the official Department of State travel website or the specific webpage of the relevant US Embassy or Consulate,” the spokesperson said.The clarification comes a day after US Vice President JD Vance announced that the Department of Labor had launched investigations and issued subpoenas against alleged foreign fraudsters accused of misusing the H-1B visa programme.Vance said the Trump administration would ensure the programme does not disadvantage American workers.”We have a programme called the H-1B visa programme. This goes to show how broad-based the fraud task force is.
