Arvind Kejriwal NEW DELHI: AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday visited a petrol pump and service station in Delhi to interact with vehicle owners over their experience with E20-blended petrol, claiming that several consumers complained of reduced mileage and vehicle performance. During the visit, Kejriwal spoke to people who had come for refuelling as well as those who had brought their vehicles for servicing. He said the interaction helped him understand the concerns being raised by some vehicle owners regarding the use of ethanol-blended fuel. In a post on X after the visit, Kejriwal said, “Today, I went to a petrol pump and a service station in Delhi to understand the ground reality. Many people told me that their vehicles’ mileage has reduced, and some also complained about mechanical issues.” The AAP leader said the government’s claims on E20 fuel are “white lies,” alleging that the ground reality differed. He said public concerns on issues affecting daily life should be heard and addressed. “We live in a democracy. The government should listen to people’s grievances and work towards resolving them,” Kejriwal said. The AAP leader also referred to the criticism faced by people who have raised concerns over E20-blended petrol, saying that those expressing their views on the issue should not be labelled or dismissed. “Those raising concerns about E20 petrol are citizens who are sharing their experiences. Their concerns should be heard,” he said. Kejriwal said his visit was aimed at understanding the experiences of ordinary consumers and bringing their feedback into public discussion. He added that decisions affecting people should take into account their feedback and concerns. 15 Indians killed after boat capsized in Vietnam, confirms Indian Embassy NEW DELHI: 15 Indians have been killed in a boat accident on Saturday in Vietnam. The incident happened when the speedboat, carrying 36 people, capsized about 400 metres (440 yards) off May Rut Ngoai Islet, authorities said.Tourist boats in the area rushed to assist after spotting the capsized vessel. A boat owner involved in the rescue said they reached the site within five minutes, but several passengers remained trapped inside the overturned boat, complicating the operation.The Indian embassy in Vietnam relased the list of all 32 Indians on board and a separate list of the deceased. “It is with profound grief that we share the list of 15 Indian nationals who have lost their lives in the tragic boat accident near Phuc Quoc Island today. Photo credit: X/ @IN_HQENC The Indian Navy received its sixth Project 17A Nilgiri-class stealth frigate, INS Mahendragiri, on Saturday as defence minister Rajnath Singh commissioned the indigenously built warship at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam, further strengthening the country’s maritime combat capabilities.”There was a time when we used to look towards other countries for our defence needs. Today, we are manufacturing warships in our own shipyards with the help of our own people”, said defence minister Rajnath Singh as he mentioned the commissioning of six frontline frigates within the past one-and-a-half years.The defence minister emphasised the importance of a capable and responsive navy, highlighting the navy’s response to developments in the Middle East.”Following the outbreak of conflict in West Asia, the Indian Navy, through ‘Operation Urja Suraksha’, safely escorted 18 merchant vessels carrying essential cargo worth over Rs 9,000 crore. This demonstrates that our Navy has emerged not merely as a fighting force but as a robust guardian of India’s economic interests,” he said.Project 17AProject 17A is the navy’s programme to build seven indigenous multi-mission stealth frigates, called the Nilgiri class, as a follow-on to the earlier Project 17 Shivalik-class frigates.Compared with the Shivalik class, the Project 17A frigates feature improved stealth characteristics, greater automation, enhanced survivability and more advanced sensors and weapons.The deal, worth around Rs 45,000 crore, is one of the largest single contracts for warship construction in India.The ships are designed by the Directorate of Naval Design, a specialised unit within the ministry of defence, and built by two public-sector shipyards: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) in Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. Four frigates are being constructed at MDL and the other three at GRSE.Docks building the frigates under Project 17AAccording to the ministry of defence, more than 75 per cent of the content used in the ships is indigenous, and over 200 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are involved in providing systems and components.The seven frigatesINS Nilgiri, Udaygiri, and Himgiri, Photo credit: X/@IN_HQENCA frigate is a modern warship that is larger than a corvette and smaller than a destroyer, typically used for anti-submarine warfare, long-range patrol and anti‑air roles.In today’s high-threat environment caused by unfriendly developments in the Indo-Pacific, stealth frigates have a relevant role to play. Their low radar signature and advanced sensors make them harder to detect, allowing effective operations against sophisticated adversaries.1. INS NilgiriINS NilgiriConstructed by MDL and commissioned on January 15, 2025, Indian Navy Ship Nilgiri was the first frigate built under the project. It reflects the next generation of indigenous frigates, with improved features for survivability, seakeeping, and stealth, compared to the Shivaliks.2. INS UdaygiriINS UdaygiriBeing the hundredth warship designed by the navy’s Warship Design Bureau, Udaygiri was commissioned on August 26, 2025.3. INS HimgiriINS HimgiriConstructed by GRSE in Kolkata, Himgiri was commissioned alongside INS Udaygiri at the Visakhapatnam naval base. 4. INS TaragiriINS TaragiriThe fourth Nilgiri-class frigate, Taragiri, was commissioned on April 3, 2026.5. INS Dunagiri (F 36)INS DaunagiriThe fifth ship under 17A, and the second built by GRSE, INS Daunagiri, was commissioned on 21 June, 2026. 6. INS MahendragiriINS MahendragiriLatest in the armada of stealth frigates, and the last constructed by MDL for the project, is the INS Mahendragiri. It is also the first warship to bear this name, among those named after decommissioned frigates. 7. INS VindhyagiriINS VindhyagiriBeing developed by GRSE, INS Vindhyagiri is the final frigate waiting to be commissioned under the project. It is currently undergoing final outfitting and trials ahead of its commissioning into the navy. Vindhyagiri was launched on August 17, 2023, in Kolkata, by President Droupadi Murmu. SpecificationsStealth frigates built under Project 17A share the same basic design, measuring 149 metres in length with a full-load displacement of approximately 6,670 tonnes. Powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, they can achieve speeds of up to 28-30 knots. Their redesigned hull has enhanced stealth features and improved survivability compared with the earlier Project 17 Shivalik-class frigates.The Nilgiri-class frigates are nearly five per cent larger than the Shivalik class, yet feature a sleeker design with a reduced radar cross-section.They are equipped with a state-of-the-art Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) and indigenously developed advanced weapons and sensors.Specifications of Nilgiri-Class frigatesEach frigate features a flight deck and an enclosed hangar capable of accommodating up to two medium-sized helicopters, including the HAL Dhruv, Sea King Mk 42B, and MH-60R Seahawk, enabling it to undertake extensive anti-submarine warfare and maritime reconnaissance operations.The frigates are equipped with missile systems, including the eight indigenous BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and the Barak-8 surface-to-air missile system, jointly developed by India and Israel. The Project 17A stealth frigates are fitted with a Vertical Launch System (VLS), providing advanced 360-degree protection against aerial threats such as enemy aircraft, drones, helicopters, and incoming anti-ship missiles.They are also armed with rocket launchers, anti-submarine torpedoes, a BrahMos supersonic surface-to-surface missile system, a Barak-8 medium-range surface-to-air missile system, a 76 mm gun, and a combination of 30 mm and 12.7 mm weapon systems for rapid close-range engagements.According to the ministry of defence, while being capable of anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, INS Mahendragiri is equally capable of undertaking maritime security operations, power projection, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions.Arming the eastern frontIndia’s naval strategy has been historically shaped to counter the Pakistani threat on the Western Front, leading to heavier deployment of warships in the Arabian Sea. However, there has been a steady deployment of all the currently commissioned 17A frigates to the eastern naval front, possibly suggesting a deliberate strategic shift in focus towards the broader Indo-Pacific region.According to Observer Research Foundation, there exists a gap between India’s maritime ambition and material reality due to delays in critical acquisition programs, such as submarines under Project- 75(I), leaving the Eastern Naval Command under immense pressure amid increasing Chinese presence in the region.Additionally, ORF reports the rising number of Chinese “Dual-Use Research Vessels,” travelling across the Bay of Bengal and docking in ports like Sri Lanka’s Hambantota. China claims they are for the purpose of scientific research, while using them to spy on missile test ranges in Odisha.The ships also gather key oceanographic data, such as salinity and thermal layers, getting a know-how of the oceanic conditions, which is handy during submarine warfare.By placing these stealth frigates under the eastern fleet, the Navy can effectively strengthen patrol presence, escort duties, anti-submarine warfare readiness and maritime surveillance in the waters.Moreover, deployment near Andaman and Nicobar islands keeps them in proximity to the Strait of Malacca, one of the most critical trade chokepoints connecting the Indian and Pacific Oceans. A substantial share of China’s trade and energy imports transits through these sea lanes, making their uninterrupted access a strategic necessity for Beijing.A capable Indian Navy with a credible presence in the eastern Indian Ocean strengthens India’s ability to monitor key maritime approaches, deter hostile activity and contribute to a stable regional security environment.Before the commissioning of Mahendragiri, the defence minister addressed the sailors at the Visakhapatnam naval base on Friday.”Several powers seek to expand their influence in our neighbourhood and establish a stronger presence”, he said.“India, as the largest power in this region, is also its greatest guarantor of peace and stability. For us, the Indian Ocean is like our own courtyard, and protecting it is our responsibility”, he added.Blue water navyIndia is a blue-water navy capable of operating across the Indian Ocean and the wider Indo-Pacific. Beyond defending the country’s coastline, the Indian Navy is increasingly tasked with protecting sea lines of communication, maintaining a sustained presence in strategically important waters, safeguarding India’s maritime interests and responding to contingencies far from home shores.At the same time, New Delhi has steadily expanded its role as the preferred security partner for countries across the Indian Ocean Region. Through initiatives such as SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the more recent MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across Regions), India has sought to promote collaborative maritime security by conducting joint exercises, coordinated patrols, information sharing, capacity building, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, and training personnel from friendly foreign navies.These efforts have reinforced the Indian Navy’s image as both a reliable first responder during regional crises and a trusted maritime partner committed to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.Stealth frigates such as those under Project 17A are central to this vision. Designed for anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, they can operate independently or as part of larger carrier and expeditionary task groups, extending the Navy’s reach while strengthening maritime surveillance, escort operations and deterrence across the region.Their induction also forms part of a wider naval modernisation programme that includes Project 15B guided-missile destroyers, the Project 75 and Project 75(I) submarine programmes, next-generation missile vessels and future indigenous aircraft carrier plans. NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday stepped up his demand for the restoration of statehood, urging the Centre not to mistake his government’s patience for weakness and asking it to clearly define what it means by the “appropriate time” for restoring the Union Territory’s full status.Addressing a grand workers’ convention at the mausoleum of his grandparents in Hazratbal on the 26th death anniversary of his grandmother, Akbar Jehan, Abdullah said his party had deliberately chosen dialogue over confrontation but warned that restraint should not be seen as surrender.Abdullah said he had given the Centre time to fulfil its promise of restoring statehood after his government took office, but claimed that “the reality is that they want to keep the situation like this”.He alleged that the elected government was being prevented from functioning effectively, accusing the BJP-led Centre of governing Jammu and Kashmir through the Lieutenant Governor. “Why did you (let us) form the government if you will not allow it to function? Representative image (PTI file) NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old Indian tourist from Bihar died after drowning in Nepal’s Phewa Lake in Pokhara, police said on Friday.The deceased was identified as Rohit Kumar, who had travelled to Pokhara with four friends. The incident took place on Thursday evening after the group visited the Tal Barahi Temple, located on an island in the lake.According to the district police office, Kaski, the group had docked their boat at the temple when Rohit and one of his friends decided to swim in the lake. During the swim, Rohit reportedly sank into the water and went missing.A disaster management team led by armed police force assistant Sub Inspector Devendra KC, deployed from the Phewa Watch and Rescue Tower, launched a search operation immediately after receiving information about the incident.Rohit was rescued at around 5 pm by a team of the armed police force, Kaski district police spokesperson Birendra Kumar Paswan said.He was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital in Pokhara, where he succumbed during treatment, police said.Authorities are investigating the incident.Get the latest India news and live updates. Median wealth of Indians are increasing If the UBS Global Wealth Report 2026 is anything to go by, acche din has arrived for a growing slice of Indians who are fast moving up the social ladder. India added 31,033 new US-dollar millionaires in 2025, more than twice mainland China’s 14,079. India’s millionaire count rose 3.4% in the year against China’s 0.3%, though China is working off a far bigger base. For all the talk of the dragon breathing fire while the elephant lags on infrastructure and industrial heft, this is one scorecard where India comes out ahead. But the shape of that wealth carries a pattern policymakers will want to watch, because even as Indians get richer, they still don’t store their wealth the way the West does.UBS defines wealth as financial assets plus real assets, principally housing, minus debt. Measured that way, only 25.8% of India’s gross personal wealth sits in financial assets, against 78.9% in the US, 68.9% in Japan, 54.9% in South Korea and 51.9% in mainland China. India is close to the bottom of the table on this count.How the data has changedChina still has a far larger millionaire base. UBS estimates over 5.3 million dollar millionaires there, against India’s roughly 944,000, with the US in a league of its own at more than 23.6 million. But in 2025, India minted more new dollar millionaires than China, Russia, South Korea, Germany and Italy. India beats ChinaThat is a sharp shift from the previous cycle, though UBS cautions against reading too much into such comparisons because its methodology has changed. In 2024, the US added 379,000 dollar millionaires, or more than 1,000 a day, and mainland China added 141,000, or over 386 a day, while India added around 39,000 in the year.A second yardstick tells a similar story. The Mercedes-Benz Hurun India Wealth Report 2025 estimated the number of millionaire families in India at 871,700, up from 458,000 in 2021 and 159,900 in 2017, with Mumbai alone accounting for 142,000, followed by New Delhi at 68,200 and Bengaluru at 31,600. Hurun counts families and UBS counts individuals, so the totals aren’t directly comparable, but the trends run in the same direction. The millionaire class is expanding fast, but remains concentrated in a few cities. India nearing 1 million millionaires How Indians are differentHere, the Indian wealth story diverges from richer financial economies. The Indian wealthy are far more attached to real estate than their peers in the West. The habit is old and well documented, an RBI-linked household finance study found that the average Indian household held 77% of its assets in real estate, 11% in gold, 7% in durable goods and just 5% in financial assets. In that sense, UBS’s 2026 finding confirms a well-established trend.The World Gold Council estimates that Indian households sit on as much as 25,000 tonnes of gold, held not only as an investment but also as wedding heirlooms, emergency collateral and what many regard as an inflation hedge. Gold and real estate, especially in posh locations, are also visible markers of upward mobility. For many, being seen as rich is as important as being rich. India is rich but not liquid Equities have gone more mainstream on the back of SIPs, mutual funds, demat accounts and the post-pandemic retail rush, but UBS figures show it is still early days for those instruments. Fresh savings continue to flow more into tangible assets. In FY24, household net financial savings came to 5.3% of GDP while savings in physical assets rose to 13.5%.The preference isn’t costless, though the comparison depends heavily on the period chosen. Official housing-price data points to modest national gains. National Housing Bank study puts India’s housing price index CAGR at 4.75% over 2013Q2–2024Q3, while residential rental yields have generally stayed modest, in the 2–6% range. Gold did well too, compounding at roughly 9–11% a year over the decade on most estimates, before the 2025–26 price spike pushed returns even higher.Equities, however, have generally rewarded financialisation more strongly over long periods, with Nifty 50 total returns in the low double digits and midcap indices higher. A house in the right Tier-1 pocket may have done far better than the national average, but a typical property-heavy portfolio has often seen lesser returns. At 8.2% of gross wealth, India’s household debt sits below mainland China’s 10.6%, the US’s 10.9%, Japan’s 11.9%, Australia’s 18%, the UK’s 20% and Brazil’s 23.4%. Prima facie, it is reassuring that Indians aren’t overleveraged, but coupled with India’s thin financial-asset share, it points to wealth that is deeply concentrated and locked mostly away from market instruments. India’s wealth is low-debt Very high inequalityThe inequality data points to a similar picture. UBS puts India’s wealth Gini at 0.74, close to the US’s 0.77 and well above mainland China’s 0.60. A Gini score of 0 indicates perfect equality, while 1 indicates extreme inequality, so India’s 0.74 is fairly high by UBS’s metric.As UBS chief economist Paul Donovan notes in the report, people tend to judge their wealth relative to others rather than in absolute terms, so many don’t feel rich even when they are better off than before. For many, Sharma ji ka ladka in the neighbourhood is always one notch higher on the social-mobility ladder. Yet there is hard data to show that Indians are doing better, and even beating the global average. UBS notes India is among the few markets where median wealth has climbed roughly 20% since 2020, while many others saw it fall. Stark inequalityFor policymakers, the stakes are obvious. A more financialised base of household wealth would deepen capital markets, put retirement planning on firmer ground and ease the economy’s overdependence on property. The economic historian Joel Mokyr, interviewed in the same report, makes the case that money follows opportunity, if the conditions are right and the idea is good, he argues, capital will flow to it.India’s challenge is the reverse of a capital shortage. NEW DELHI: Congress general secretary and Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel on Saturday held a meeting with party leaders considered close to former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi amid the ongoing rift in the party over its state leadership.This comes after Channi, along with several Congress workers, stayed away from a meeting with Baghel after he was overlooked by the party and Amarinder Singh Raja Warring was appointed Punjab Congress chief.Senior party leaders like Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa attended the meeting. Leader of opposition and senior party leader Partap Singh Bajwa, who was invited by Rana Gurjit Singh, and former deputy chief minister O P Singh were also present at the meeting.’Will safeguard everyone’s interests’After the meeting concluded, Baghel said every leader agreed that the party should abide by the decision of the high command. Defence minister Rajnath Singh (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday specified the growing importance of the Indian Navy, saying recent global developments have once again proved that every nation needs a strong and responsive naval force to safeguard its interests.Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of INS Mahendragiri in Visakhapatnam, Rajnath said, “Recent events have once again demonstrated how essential a capable and responsive navy is for any nation.”Citing the Navy’s role during the recent conflict in West Asia, the defence minister praised its efforts under Operation Urja Suraksha. He said the operation ensured the safe passage of merchant vessels carrying vital cargo despite regional tensions.”After the conflict began in West Asia, the Indian Navy, through Operation Urja Suraksha, safely escorted 18 merchant vessels carrying essential cargo worth over 9,000 crore. This shows that our Navy is not just a fighting force but has also emerged as a strong guardian of India’s economic interests,” Rajnath said.The defence minister also stressed the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific, saying the region has become the focus of global attention and that India has a key role to play in ensuring its stability and growth.”Today the eyes of the entire world are on the Indo-Pacific region, and India has a crucial role to play in this part of the world. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the futures of India and New Zealand are “intertwined” as he called for closer cooperation in technology, trade, space and sport during an address to the Indian community in Auckland.Speaking on the final day of his two-day visit to New Zealand, PM Modi highlighted the growing partnership between the two countries, pointing to collaborations ranging from space exploration to rugby. His visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in 40 years, comes after both nations elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership and adopted a Roadmap to 2030 to deepen cooperation across trade, defence, technology, security and regional affairs.Addressing the gathering, PM Modi recalled India’s successful Chandrayaan-3 Moon mission and acknowledged New Zealand’s contribution to the achievement.”When India’s Chandrayaan landed on the Moon’s south pole, all of New Zealand was rejoicing… New Zealand’s technology also contributed to this success. NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a “quintessential” Indian politician who prefers direct engagement with the electorate.Addressing a media briefing in New Zealand, MEA Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon was asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not held a press conference or interacted with New Zealand journalists during his visit.Responding with a laugh, Tandon said the question reminded him of a similar one raised during the Prime Minister’s visit to Norway earlier this year.”So you know, your question has that quality of deja vu, because see, it’s not appropriate for me as a civil servant to question Mr. Modi’s political method, he’s a very successful politician,” Tandon said.”But let me give you some context. Prime Minister Modi is a quintessential Indian politician. By and large, Indian politicians favour direct contact with their electorate,” he added.Explaining further, Tandon said India’s electorate largely prefers direct interaction with political leaders rather than communication through intermediaries.”And you must remember that the Indian electorate are predominantly rural folk. They want direct contact. They don’t like being spoken down to, they don’t like being spoken to through intermediaries,” he said.”And Mr. Modi has perfected the art of direct contact with his electorate, and he seems to be doing a rather good job of it, since you know, he’s been elected now, he’s in his third term, he’s one of the longest-serving Prime Ministers in our country,” Tandon added.Speaking about the purpose of the Prime Minister’s visit, Tandon said strengthening the rules-based Indo-Pacific order was a key objective.”The purpose of this visit is to strengthen the rule-based Indo-Pacific order. One of the reasons we look at New Zealand as a significant partner in this part of the world is because of our joint quest for strengthening the rule-based order in the Indo-Pacific, which is very important for India as an Indian Ocean nation,” he said.The remarks come months after a Norwegian journalist questioned why PM Modi did not take questions during a joint media interaction with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Oslo in May. The journalist had also referred to India and Norway’s rankings in the World Press Freedom Index.At the time, MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George defended India’s democratic institutions and media landscape. “We hear a lot of people asking why this, why that, but let me tell you this. We are one sixth of the total population of the world, but not one sixth of the problems of the world,” George had said.”We have a constitution which guarantees the fundamental rights of the people. We have equal rights for the women of our country, which is very important,” he added.George also criticised international commentary on India’s media environment saying, “You know how many stories are up here. We have how many breaking news coming every day in the evening. At least 200 TV channels in Delhi alone, in the English language, in Hindi language and multiple languages.”Prime Minister Modi is on a two-day visit to New Zealand from July 10-11 at the invitation of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday upped the ante against the Bharatiya Janata Party over the alleged ethanol scam in Madhya Pradesh, claiming that the state has become the epicentre of corruption and plunder under the saffron party’s government.In a social media post on X, Kharge said the public’s rightful grain was being looted with the collusion of the BJP and the government machinery.”Madhya Pradesh has today become the epicentre of corruption and plunder under the BJP government and a synonym for corruption. One scam doesn’t even end before another one surfaces,” Kharge said.”Now, a Rs 1,200 crore rice scam in the name of ethanol has come to light. The very rice that was meant to be used for the nutrition of malnourished children, pregnant women, and adolescent girls has been diverted in a game of profit. Five lakh MT of rice has become part of this corrupt game under the protection of rice millers, the ethanol mafia, and the BJP government. With the collusion of the BJP and the government machinery, the public’s rightful grain is being looted,” he added.This comes after an SIT was formed to probe a suspected racket in the state after subsidised rice meant for empanelled ethanol plants was allegedly diverted to private mills and sold back to government agencies through the procurement and custom milling system.The trigger for the criminal investigation was a Food Corporation of India (FCI) complaint about a consignment meant for an ethanol unit in Chhindwara never reaching its destination.Four people have been arrested in the case so far amid multiple complaints of the alleged diversion of rice sanctioned under an ongoing subsidy scheme to ramp up ethanol production for blending with petrol.Kharge also highlighted land-related allegations against Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav and said, “Before this, a massive land scam came to light. In Ujjain, land expansions happened in precisely those areas where government infrastructure projects and the Highway Corridor were proposed. This has raised question marks even over the Chief Minister himself. Everywhere, in every department, it’s a game of plunder and filling their own pockets—this is the story of the BJP’s loot of power.””This plunder, which began with Vyapam, hasn’t stopped even today despite countless paper leaks and innumerable cases of corruption. The BJP has turned Madhya Pradesh into a model of corruption, and, as always, Modi ji just sits there in stoic silence. West Bengal CM NEW DELHI: The West Bengal government has constituted a nine-member expert committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to examine and finalise the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC), 2026.The proposed legislation is expected to be introduced during the assembly’s August session, with indigenous communities proposed to remain outside its ambit.In a notification issued on Friday, the state government said the committee has been formed to undertake a comprehensive review of the draft legislation before it is placed before the assembly.”It has been further made to appear to the Governor that considering the wide ramification and voluminous nature of the subject domain, it is necessary to constitute a committee for a comprehensive examination and review of the DRAFT BILL titled The Uniform Civil Code, West Bengal, 2026,” the notification said.It further stated that the Governor “is pleased hereby to constitute, with immediate effect, a committee comprising the following persons of eminence to examine the bill.”The panel members include:Retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash DesaiFormer Meghalaya Governor Tathagata RoyResident Commissioner Dushyant Naraiala (IAS)Retired IAS officer Shatrughna SinghPrincipal Secretary (Home and Hill Affairs) Sanghamitra GhoshRetired anthropology professor Dr Ratna BhattacharyaFormer Gour Banga University vice-chancellor Gopalchandra MisraCalcutta high court advocate Osman Gani Mallick andFormer executive director Nirmalya BhattacharyyaThe notification further stated that the state government has already prepared a draft bill aimed at creating a uniform legal framework governing personal civil matters for all residents of West Bengal, irrespective of religion, faith or community.The proposed law seeks to replace religion-specific personal laws in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession and adoption with a common legal framework while retaining constitutional exemptions available to certain categories, including indigenous communities.Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari had formally announced the move to implement a UCC in the state assembly earlier this week, fulfilling a key promise made by the BJP in its Sankalp Patra, which pledged to introduce the bill within six months of coming to power in the state.Justice Desai has previously chaired the UCC committees in Uttarakhand and Gujarat and currently heads similar panels in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. The latest allegations come at a time when the NEET-UG paper leak had triggered a major political storm and forced govt to promise stricter safeguards in high-stakes exams New Delhi: An organised examination racket is operating across several states, according to Haryana-based advocate and student leader Deepak Dhankhar, who claims the UGC-NET Sociology question paper was circulated to candidates just hours before the exam, with students reportedly cramming from the leaked material overnight.In an exclusive interview, Dhankhar said the investigation started almost by accident. One of his associates was approached by people claiming to have access to exam papers, and at first, the group assumed it was a scam. Watch ‘Exam Paper Came A Night Before’: UGC-NET Leak Trail, Whistleblower Tells His Story | Watch”We thought it was a cheating racket trying to dupe candidates,” Dhankhar said. “But then we realised this could be an opportunity to expose them.”The alleged operators kept in touch with his associate, insisting they could arrange papers for various exams. Dhankhar says he now has phone numbers, names and financial details tied to these individuals.The first paper the group handed over turned out to be fake. “Not a single question matched. We thought it was just a gang extorting money from students,” Dhankhar recalled. But the network didn’t disappear, instead, it doubled down, claiming it had access to the real paper through a longer chain of contacts, and set up another round of “preparation” sessions for candidates.That’s where things escalated. The most serious allegation concerns the Sociology paper held on June 30. During a late-night session, Dhankhar says his associate spotted a pen drive with what looked like exam material on it.”The Sociology PDF was open on their laptop. Taking advantage of a brief opportunity, my associate forwarded the file and immediately deleted the trace. They never realised the paper had reached us,” he said.Candidates who sat the exam the next day told him the questions matched almost exactly what they’d studied the night before. One student, he says, walked out of the hall and told him bluntly: “These were the exact questions. They matched completely.”Dhankhar alleges the operation isn’t confined to Haryana, the same people claimed to have active teams in Rajasthan, Delhi, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. “If they can bring original papers, it shows how extensive the network is,” he said.He’s also frustrated with the response, or lack of one, from authorities. “Every investigating agency has had my contact details for years. Nobody approached me to collect evidence. Instead, there appears to be pressure to ensure this issue does not reach the public,” he alleged.The claims picked up national attention after Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi referenced them in a social media post. So far, neither the National Testing Agency nor law enforcement has confirmed anything publicly, and no official probe has established that the paper was actually leaked.For now, the allegations remain just that, allegations. NEW DELHI: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare will meet on July 16 to discuss the conduct of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019, weeks after the medical entrance examination was re-conducted following the cancellation of the original test over alleged paper leak.The panel, headed by Rajya Sabha MP Ram Gopal Yadav, will also examine the organisational structure, mandate and functional proficiency of regulatory institutions under the Union health ministry.The original NEET-UG examination, held on May 3, was cancelled after allegations of a paper leak and was re-conducted on June 21.
