NEW DELHI: An Indian survivor of the tourist boat tragedy off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island has described how a “sudden storm” overturned the vessel within seconds, trapping passengers inside and leaving 15 Indian tourists dead. Speaking after the accident, Nirmal Kumar said rescue teams responded quickly but claimed inadequate medical facilities and supplies on the nearby island may have cost additional lives. Vietnamese authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.Nirmal Kumar, one of the survivors, said the speedboat carrying 36 people, including 32 Indian tourists, was travelling between islands when rough weather struck without warning.”When we were moving from one island to the next island, a sudden storm came…suddenly within a second, the boat was going upside down. We were on the front side and came out by jumping into the sea. Those who were inside got trapped, and since the boat was upside down, they were unable to come outside the boat. The mission said it is working closely with Vietnamese authorities, who have assured full assistance to expedite the repatriation process.In a post on X, the Embassy of India in Vietnam said, “The mortal remains of the 15 Indian nationals who tragically passed away in yesterday’s boat accident are being transported to Ho Chi Minh City and will reach there by this evening. After completion of formalities at Ho Chi Minh the mortal remains would be transported to India at the earliest. The Embassy and the Consulate teams are closely coordinating with the Vietnamese authorities who have assured all assistance for earliest transportation of the mortal remains to India.” Watch 15 Indian Tourists Confirmed Dead As Speedboat Capsizes Off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc IslandThe latest update comes a day after a speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members capsized less than 500 metres off Hon May Rut Ngoai island, near the popular tourist destination of Phu Quoc, at around 2.30 pm local time on Saturday. At least 15 Indian tourists were killed and 17 others were injured, with four reported to be in critical condition.According to the Indian embassy, the victims included three people from Andhra Pradesh, 10 from Tamil Nadu and two from Kerala. Several of the injured are from Telangana and are receiving treatment at hospitals near the accident site.The group on board comprised mobile phone dealers from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana associated with Lava International, who were on a company-sponsored trip to Phu Quoc. They were returning to An Thoi Port from Hon May Rut Island when the vessel overturned around 400 metres from shore.The Indian Embassy had earlier confirmed the accident and announced that emergency control rooms had been established in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to assist affected families and provide information. In an earlier statement, the mission said, “In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists has capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam a few hours ago.”The embassy had also said that the “exact details of the incident are being ascertained as search and rescue operations by local authorities are ongoing.”Rescue operations were launched immediately, with nearby vessels, border guards, the coast guard and other emergency agencies joining the effort despite rough seas and strong waves. Vietnamese authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, with adverse weather, rough sea conditions and possible mechanical failure among the factors being examined.Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has ordered an investigation into the tragedy and directed authorities to hold those responsible accountable. He also instructed officials to review waterway and maritime safety measures in the area.Lava International said those on board were members of its dealer network and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. The company said its teams in both India and Vietnam are in regular contact with the families and are providing all possible assistance.Meanwhile, the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have directed officials to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian embassy in Vietnam to ensure support for the affected families. The mission said it is working closely with Vietnamese authorities, who have assured full assistance to expedite the repatriation process.In a post on X, the Embassy of India in Vietnam said, “The mortal remains of the 15 Indian nationals who tragically passed away in yesterday’s boat accident are being transported to Ho Chi Minh City and will reach there by this evening. After completion of formalities at Ho Chi Minh the mortal remains would be transported to India at the earliest. The Embassy and the Consulate teams are closely coordinating with the Vietnamese authorities who have assured all assistance for earliest transportation of the mortal remains to India.” Watch 15 Indian Tourists Confirmed Dead As Speedboat Capsizes Off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc IslandThe latest update comes a day after a speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members capsized less than 500 metres off Hon May Rut Ngoai island, near the popular tourist destination of Phu Quoc, at around 2.30 pm local time on Saturday. At least 15 Indian tourists were killed and 17 others were injured, with four reported to be in critical condition.According to the Indian embassy, the victims included three people from Andhra Pradesh, 10 from Tamil Nadu and two from Kerala. Several of the injured are from Telangana and are receiving treatment at hospitals near the accident site.The group on board comprised mobile phone dealers from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana associated with Lava International, who were on a company-sponsored trip to Phu Quoc. They were returning to An Thoi Port from Hon May Rut Island when the vessel overturned around 400 metres from shore.The Indian Embassy had earlier confirmed the accident and announced that emergency control rooms had been established in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to assist affected families and provide information. In an earlier statement, the mission said, “In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists has capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam a few hours ago.”The embassy had also said that the “exact details of the incident are being ascertained as search and rescue operations by local authorities are ongoing.”Rescue operations were launched immediately, with nearby vessels, border guards, the coast guard and other emergency agencies joining the effort despite rough seas and strong waves. Vietnamese authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, with adverse weather, rough sea conditions and possible mechanical failure among the factors being examined.Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has ordered an investigation into the tragedy and directed authorities to hold those responsible accountable. He also instructed officials to review waterway and maritime safety measures in the area.Lava International said those on board were members of its dealer network and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. The company said its teams in both India and Vietnam are in regular contact with the families and are providing all possible assistance.Meanwhile, the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have directed officials to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian embassy in Vietnam to ensure support for the affected families. NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday mounted a sharp attack on Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah after he claimed that saffron party is trying to buy National Conference MLAs. BJP national spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member Sudhanshu Trivedi termed the allegations “highly irresponsible and baseless” and demanded Abdullah either produce concrete evidence or issue a formal apology.Reacting to the allegations, Trivedi alleged that Abdullah is making these claims to hide the failures and misgovernance of his own administration.”Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah has made a highly irresponsible and condemnable statement, making the baseless allegation that the BJP is attempting to poach MLAs from his party. BJP’s J&K unit has strongly condemned this statement and directly asked him to either provide evidence or apologise,” Trivedi said.”The reality is that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has made this baseless allegation to conceal his government’s incompetence, inaction, and misgovernance in Jammu and Kashmir and to divert attention from these issues. We strongly condemn this and urge him to either provide evidence or apologise for his statement,” he added.This comes after Abdullah claimed that BJP attempted to lure one of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference’s (JKNC) MLAs with an offer of Rs 20-30 crore and a ministerial berth to switch sides.Abdullah said the MLA rejected it and informed him about the approach.”A BJP official, a Supreme Court lawyer, told one of my Jammu MLAs in a closed room, ‘We will give Rs 20 to 30 crore, one ministry, and statehood. You walk with us.’ Do they think that the faith of these people is so cheap?” J&K CM said.Deputy chief minister Surinder Choudhary strongly backed Abdullah’s claims, alleging that BJP’s entire political foundation is built on “lies.””Tell me when BJP has ever said the truth. BJP’s work is all about lies. They came to power in 2014 based on lies, then came back in 2019 and 2024, and their foundation is always lies. Omar Abdullah is not one of those leaders who lie. He first investigates the full facts, and then gives a statement,” Choudhary said.”This statement from him will force the people of Jammu and Kashmir to think about what BJP wants. Elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir according to the laws enacted by Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar. File photo NEW DELHI: As a key parliamentary committee gets down to adopting recommendations on a contentious anti-corruption bill, its draft report has acknowledged that an “overwhelming majority of stakeholders” have found the clause of removing the PM, CMs or ministers from office if they are in custody for 30 consecutive days “constitutionally problematic” as it is delinked from any judicial outcome of culpability.One of the recommendations made in the draft report is that the bill carry a sunset or an automatic reversal clause that states the barring of the person from holding office will lapse upon his discharge or if the prosecution fails to proceed with the case within a defined period, sources said. This will ensure the removal based on an unproven allegation does not turn into a de facto permanent disentitlement, they said.The draft report is open to changes backed by a majority of panel members. Once adopted, it will be tabled in Lok Sabha, raising the possibility of govt seeking its passage in Parliament to make it into a law.Despite strong objections to the 30-day arrest trigger, the draft report’s recommendations do not substantially amend the proposal, instead calling for using the word “suspension” in place of “removal” from office to avoid stigma or presumption of guilt.Sources said the home ministry, in its reply, has objected to the term “suspension”, arguing that it implies a transient state where a person retains the legal title, rank and status of office while being barred from discharging their duties.The draft report says the most commonly proposed alternative to the 30-day custody trigger was shifting the yardstick to the stage of framing of charges.Get the latest India news and live updates. Unsafe deliveries NEW DELHI: From rotten eggs and spoiled parathas to expired whey protein and packaged snacks, Swiggy Instamart has been issued nine notices by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) after consumer complaints alleged the delivery of unsafe and expired food products through the quick-commerce platform.The food regulator has sought a detailed explanation and compliance report from the company, warning that failure to respond satisfactorily could invite action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.According to the notices, consumers had complained of receiving expired, spoiled, rotten, contaminated and otherwise unsafe food products through Swiggy Instamart. Among the products flagged by them were Healthify 100% Whey Protein, Noice Homestyle Madras Mixture with Peanuts, Akshayakalpa Organic Eggs and Kakke da Paratha.FSSAI said consumers had alleged that the whey protein and snack packets were delivered after their expiry dates, while the eggs were found to be rotten and emitting a foul smell, rendering them unfit for consumption. Unsafe deliveries NEW DELHI: From rotten eggs and spoiled parathas to expired whey protein and packaged snacks, Swiggy Instamart has been issued nine notices by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) after consumer complaints alleged the delivery of unsafe and expired food products through the quick-commerce platform.The food regulator has sought a detailed explanation and compliance report from the company, warning that failure to respond satisfactorily could invite action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.According to the notices, consumers had complained of receiving expired, spoiled, rotten, contaminated and otherwise unsafe food products through Swiggy Instamart. Among the products flagged by them were Healthify 100% Whey Protein, Noice Homestyle Madras Mixture with Peanuts, Akshayakalpa Organic Eggs and Kakke da Paratha.FSSAI said consumers had alleged that the whey protein and snack packets were delivered after their expiry dates, while the eggs were found to be rotten and emitting a foul smell, rendering them unfit for consumption. An Indian tourist, who was rescued from a speedboat that capsized, receives treatment at a hospital in Phu Quoc, Vietnam HYDERABAD/CHENNAI/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: From Tamil Nadu to Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, phones that carried holiday updates rang with news no family was prepared to hear, turning a sponsored Vietnam getaway into a journey remembered only for lives cut short and homes left waiting.Among the victims were AC Thomas (58) and wife Lovely Thomas (56), from Kottarakkara in Kerala’s Kollam district.They had left on July 7 on a weeklong tour organised by a private medical company. The couple remained in touch until Friday before they were first reported missing after a boat carrying 32 Indian tourists capsized off Phu Quoc Island Saturday afternoon.”They travelled to Vietnam on a weeklong package tour. We first came to know about the accident through news reports. Later, the tour coordinator informed us that both of them died and their bodies were recovered during rescue operations. We are yet to receive information on when the bodies will be repatriated to India. We are in constant touch with the Indian embassy in Vietnam,” Thomas’s brother AC Varghese said.Andhra’s Machilipatnam mourned Gelli Jaya Lakshmi, while her husband, businessman Gelli Kishore, remained in hospital in Vietnam. Friends remembered them as inseparable. “Whenever Kishore travelled, he always preferred to go with his family, especially his wife… It is heartbreaking that a joyful vacation ended in such a devastating tragedy…” family friend Bandi Rambabu said.Tamil Nadu bore the heaviest toll. Among those killed were Salem wholesale mobile phone dealer, N Sridhar (60), who had travelled with friends on July 8, and Senthil Kumar (45), a Lava mobile dealer in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts who also ran an aluminium factory and an RO system agency. File photo: SG Tushar Mehta (Picture credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: Solicitor general Tushar Mehta on Saturday said associating Hindu law with ‘Manusmriti’ was a misconception as an overwhelming number of Hindus, except those in Assam and Bengal, followed the ‘Mitakshara’ school of thought.Delivering a lecture on ‘Ancient Wisdom & Legal Intelligence’, Mehta said, “People who allege that Hindu law is based on ‘Manusmriti’ are factually wrong since most of India follows ‘Mitakshara’ school of thought which is based on ‘Yajnavalkya Smriti’.”He added, “There are two theories of Hindu law prevalent in India since time immemorial, at least since prior to 700 AD. The first school of thought in Hindu law is ‘Mitakshara’ school of thought and the second school of thought is ‘Dayabhaga’.”The SG said the ‘Mitakshara’ school of thought, developed by Vijnaesvara, was solely based on ‘Yajnavalkya Smriti’ and not ‘Manusmriti’ as was wrongly believed. He said it was prevalent in the entire country except Bengal and Assam, which followed ‘Dayabhaga’ school of thought, based on ‘Manusmriti’.Distinguishing between the two schools of thought based on rights of inheritance as provided in scriptures, he said, “Inheritance in ‘Dayabhaga’ school of thought used to be applicable only to those who could perform ‘pind daan’.According to this system, ‘pind’ would mean rice cake offered in ‘shraadh’ ceremony to the ancestors. This was a very restrictive meaning in the ‘Dayabhaga’ school of thought prevalent in two states.”He said the ‘Mitakshara’ school was liberal and more dynamic as it gave the right of inheritance by birth, considering ‘pind’ as DNA.This concept is still in existence as a coparcener in a Hindu family gets the right of inheritance by birth.On adoption, Mehta presented four prevailing interpretations of “right to adopt’ to argue Hindu scripture-based laws were capable of being interpreted in a dynamic way.He also praised ancient wisdom for devising ‘prohibited degrees of relationships’ between man and woman and said the system devised much prior to 700 AD had been approved by Parliament while codifying the Hindu law on marriage.Get the latest India news and live updates. File photo: SG Tushar Mehta (Picture credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: Solicitor general Tushar Mehta on Saturday said associating Hindu law with ‘Manusmriti’ was a misconception as an overwhelming number of Hindus, except those in Assam and Bengal, followed the ‘Mitakshara’ school of thought.Delivering a lecture on ‘Ancient Wisdom & Legal Intelligence’, Mehta said, “People who allege that Hindu law is based on ‘Manusmriti’ are factually wrong since most of India follows ‘Mitakshara’ school of thought which is based on ‘Yajnavalkya Smriti’.”He added, “There are two theories of Hindu law prevalent in India since time immemorial, at least since prior to 700 AD. The first school of thought in Hindu law is ‘Mitakshara’ school of thought and the second school of thought is ‘Dayabhaga’.”The SG said the ‘Mitakshara’ school of thought, developed by Vijnaesvara, was solely based on ‘Yajnavalkya Smriti’ and not ‘Manusmriti’ as was wrongly believed. He said it was prevalent in the entire country except Bengal and Assam, which followed ‘Dayabhaga’ school of thought, based on ‘Manusmriti’.Distinguishing between the two schools of thought based on rights of inheritance as provided in scriptures, he said, “Inheritance in ‘Dayabhaga’ school of thought used to be applicable only to those who could perform ‘pind daan’.According to this system, ‘pind’ would mean rice cake offered in ‘shraadh’ ceremony to the ancestors. This was a very restrictive meaning in the ‘Dayabhaga’ school of thought prevalent in two states.”He said the ‘Mitakshara’ school was liberal and more dynamic as it gave the right of inheritance by birth, considering ‘pind’ as DNA.This concept is still in existence as a coparcener in a Hindu family gets the right of inheritance by birth.On adoption, Mehta presented four prevailing interpretations of “right to adopt’ to argue Hindu scripture-based laws were capable of being interpreted in a dynamic way.He also praised ancient wisdom for devising ‘prohibited degrees of relationships’ between man and woman and said the system devised much prior to 700 AD had been approved by Parliament while codifying the Hindu law on marriage.Get the latest India news and live updates. Modi described the two countries as “natural partners” that are “made for each other”.The leaders called for doubling of bilateral trade in the next five years to Rs 35,000 crore on the back of the newly signed FTA, with Modi welcoming New Zealand’s commitment to invest billion in India over the next 15 years – a key takeaway from the trade agreement.Luxon later said the FTA included a “commitment to promote” private investment. “We’ve been through this before – it’s very clearly understood on both sides – it’s a commitment to promote investment into India from New Zealand and vice versa,” said Luxon.PM Modi, Luxon agree to work towards early, effective implementation of free trade pactAccording to PM Modi, this wasn’t just a commitment to investment, but a commitment to becoming a partner in India’s developmental journey. In one corner, 29-year-old Akash Dhar welcomes customers with a smile. His eyes remain open though he cannot see.Two weeks ago, Dhar – whose Kashmiri Pandit family had migrated from J&K as violence peaked in the 1990s – tentatively opened ‘Taste and Treats’ restaurant.However, he was hardly ready for the response he would receive from the local community. “It has been incredible,” he beamed.”My landlord, Bashir Ahmad Beigh, won’t take any rent from me and customers are trooping in,” he told TOI.Starting a business back in Kupwara “felt like a natural step”, said Dhar, who had made several attempts to qualify for the civil services but couldn’t.‘We want eatery to do well and hope this will encourage other Kashmiri migrants to return’After all, his mother Chandra Dhar is from Handwara, about 4km from Langate, and his father Ashish Dhar is a “Langate native”.The family left for Jammu three decades ago where Dhar was born in a migrant colony.Dhar’s vision began deteriorating when he was a child. His parents took him to Delhi, where doctors diagnosed him with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative genetic eye disease that typically begins with night blindness, eventually leading to total blindness.His younger sister has the same condition. Both, however, pursued higher education. Akash graduated from University of Jammu and completed professional computer courses in Delhi. His sibling is studying music. An accomplished cricketer, Dhar represented the J&K blind cricket team in 2022.“It seems like this (the restaurant) is what I had always been waiting for,” Dhar said, as one of his employees, 22-year-old Yasir Aamir, nodded approvingly. “A neighbour told me about this restaurant,” Aamir said. “I applied for the job and got it. I am happy, so is my family.”The restaurant’s manager, Irfan Ahmad Lone, is upbeat. “We are getting customers from different areas,” Lone said. “Yesterday we had guests from Ganderbal. There were Muslims and Kashmiri Pandits. EC sources stated that SIR is a constitutional exercise in accordance with the electoral laws of India (File photo) NEW DELHI: Three United Nations rapporteurs have flagged concerns regarding the special intensive revision (SIR) process completed in 13 states/UTs and ongoing in others, alleging shortcomings like “opaque AI-driven systems, weak ground for deletion of names, inadequate time given to electors for documentation and objections and the exclusion of minorities”.The allegations on Saturday drew a fierce rebuttal from Election Commission officials, who dismissed the charges as “unfounded” and “unwarranted”.A letter written to the government of India, reportedly on May 1, 2026, by the special UN rapporteur on minority issues, special rapporteur on promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, and special rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, had claimed that the SIR process did not give electors a fair window to get their documents in order to prove their eligibility to be in the electoral roll and that the SIR process had led to a notable exclusion of minorities.It even referred to the “political narrative” ahead of the SIR rollout, recalling how some senior ministers had linked deletion of electors’ names to targeting the “illegal Bangladesh immigrants”.EC sources termed the allegations as “baseless”, asserting that the entire SIR process was transparent and executed by state/UT government employees under the watch of political parties.SIR a transparent process, endorsed by Supreme Court: Poll panelOn the UN rapporteurs concern over what they called: “The large-scale removal of millions of names… particularly affecting members of minority groups”, EC said that ample opportunity was given to electors to challenge the exclusions and that the final voter list did not point to any bias towards minorities. “This is why SC upheld both the intent and process of SIR,” an EC functionary told TOI.Stating that SIR is a constitutional exercise in accordance with the electoral laws of India, EC sources told TOI that the exercise is being conducted across the country by 12 lakh booth-level officers, 4,123 electoral registration officers, nearly 800 district election officers and 36 chief electoral officers.“All these officers executing SIR on the ground are state govt employees, who are on deputation to EC in line with Section 13 of the RP Act,” said an EC official.The official cited Article 326 of the Constitution — which requires an elector to be at least 18 years of age, a citizen of India and not legally disqualified — to underline that SIR ensures that every citizen who meets these criteria is included, while the “absent, shifted, dead, duplicate and foreigners” are weeded out.The UN report mentions SIR in Bengal, particularly its impact on Nandigram. “Muslim voters were reportedly disproportionately impacted… In Nandigram, allegedly 95% of the deleted voters were Muslims, even though Muslims only make up 25% of the constituency’s electorate,” notes the report. It called the ‘targeted deletions’ “serious violations of multiple human rights obligations”.Highlighting that political parties are an integral part of SIR, EC said while field verification of electors is done by BLOs, the voter list in concurrently audited by booth-level agents appointed by six national parties and 67 state-level parties. The decision regarding registration of voters and deletion of ineligible persons is taken by the ERO.“SIR is based on actual field verification of electors, checking of data and verification of documents by electoral staff. No artificial intelligence is used at any stage,” an EC official said, rejecting claims of UN rapporteur regarding the use of AI-driven systems in SIR.The official said after the publication of electoral roll for every booth and assembly constituency, objections can still be raised by anyone against any wrong entry and claims filed for inclusion of eligible electors as part of continuous updation.An EC functionary said the enthusiastic and full-scale participation of nearly 95 crore electors as well as all political parties in “the transparent SIR process” and its endorsement by Supreme Court, is the biggest validation of the exercise.The six assembly polls not only clocked record high voter turnouts since Independence, but the actual number of votes polled too were the highest since Independence.Bengal had recorded 93.7% polling, Puducherry 91.2%, Assam 86.3%, Tamil Nadu 86% and Kerala 79.5% in the April-May polls. File photo: CJI Suryakant (Picture credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: With trials in Delhi riots and many UAPA cases against accused including Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam dragging, Chief Justice Surya Kant said expeditious completion of trial in these cases is desirable as final adjudication of evidence would address the grievances of non-grant of bail despite long period of incarceration.TOI asked CJI Kant, who is exactly halfway through his 15-month tenure, about his views on the criticism faced by judiciary for not granting bail to accused like Khalid, Imam and co-accused in several cases under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) despite being in jail as undertrials for years.Without referring to any particular case or individual accused persons, the CJI said, “This is an area which needs to be addressed on the judicial side. But a part of this problem has effectively been cured through a parallel judicial proceeding through which I have been able to impress upon the Union govt to establish exclusive special courts for conducting trials in UAPA, PMLA and NDPS cases.””A beginning has been made. Now that govt has agreed and started establishing special courts exclusively for UAPA, PMLA and NDPS cases, if we are able to conclude trials within one year or expeditiously, this entire controversy will come to an end. Coming years would yield the desired result of fast-tracking the trials. This will address the grievances of accused,” he said.Bringing credibility to tribunals is the other challenge, says CJIAsked about the challenges he faced as head of judiciary, CJI Kant said, “I consider that dealing with pendency of cases is the ultimate challenge.” This comes on a day when the total pendency in trial courts crossed five crore mark and stood at 5.05 crore cases Saturday, of which 1.1 crore were civil and 3.9 core were criminal cases.“The second challenge, to my mind, is to dismantle the distance between common man and Supreme Court. The bar has to play a proactive role along with the bench. They need to discharge this responsibility through leadership roles to reach out to people,” CJI Kant said.The Supreme Court’s image is normally intimidating to a common man because of his apprehension that his case may remain pending without being heard or he may not get adequate legal assistance or afford a lawyer. These negative feelings about Supreme Court must be eliminated, he said. During the last one year there has been a remarkable qualitative change in the free legal assistance given to poor litigants with empanelment of competent lawyers in the legal aid services.Expressing disappointment over the functioning, working and image of quasi-judicial bodies like National Green Tribunal, National Company Law Tribunal, NCLAT, Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and Central Administrative Tribunals, the CJI said that the other challenge is how to bring and maintain credibility of tribunals, which have been established as an alternative forum to judiciary.“People are building an image of the judiciary after seeing what is happening in these tribunals, which are manned by retired Supreme Court or HC judges. But the problem is that because of the revised service conditions, not many retired judges are willing to take up the assignments of heading tribunals. I’m requesting the retired judges with impeccable track record to head the tribunals as a service to the society and the country,” the CJI said.“It is a assignment that would help former judges to continue repaying the society and help reinforce the faith and trust of people in quasi-judicial bodies, which play a very important role in adjudicating disputes relating to crucial sectors — economy, environment and electricity, public perception of quasi-judicial bodies is reflective of the perception about judiciary and vice versa” CJI Kant said.Get the latest India news and live updates. ED in FCI is equivalent to a joint secretary level officer at Centre.The DoPT order that came just four days after the food ministry suspended the Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IAAS) officer said “placing Ashutosh Joshi under suspension is treated as non-est”. DoPT ordered his immediate repatriation to the parent cadre.TOI has learnt that the food ministry had gone ahead with disciplinary proceedings following a “neutral committee” probe that found alleged irregularities, including diversion, in the sale of rice to North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Limited (NERAMAC) under the Open Market Sale Scheme (domestic) by FCI’s Delhi region.The DoPT order mentioned that the Controlled and Auditor General of India, on Thursday, had requested the DoPT for repatriation of the officer to parent cadre.There was no response from the food ministry to repeated query on why its suspension order was treated null and void.Officials said that while four other executives of FCI have also been suspended based on the findings of the “neutral committee”, it remains to be seen what happens to their fate after the recent development.Meanwhile, on July 6 itself, the food ministry set up a “review and restructuring” of the organisational framework in FCI to “improve administrative efficiency, eliminate ambiguity in decision making and fixing responsibility in future”.The four-member committee has been asked to submit its recommendations in six weeks. Representative image JAMMU: A 31-year-old woman constable of BSF allegedly died by suicide in the family quarters of the force’s camp at Gadigarh on Jammu’s outskirts.Constable Vanita Rani, from Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur, joined the force in 2014 and was posted with BSF’s 165 Battalion. She was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a dupatta Friday.Police said the exact cause of death was yet to be officially established. Her body was sent to the mortuary for postmortem.Vanita Rani’s alleged suicide death comes days after another woman constable, 23-year-old Bishnu Priya Roy from Bengal’s Jalpaiguri, died by suicide in her official residence in Jammu’s Paloura on June 29.Get the latest India news and live updates. Arvind Kejriwal NEW DELHI: AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday visited a petrol pump and service station in Delhi to interact with vehicle owners over their experience with E20-blended petrol, claiming that several consumers complained of reduced mileage and vehicle performance. During the visit, Kejriwal spoke to people who had come for refuelling as well as those who had brought their vehicles for servicing. He said the interaction helped him understand the concerns being raised by some vehicle owners regarding the use of ethanol-blended fuel. In a post on X after the visit, Kejriwal said, “Today, I went to a petrol pump and a service station in Delhi to understand the ground reality. Many people told me that their vehicles’ mileage has reduced, and some also complained about mechanical issues.” The AAP leader said the government’s claims on E20 fuel are “white lies,” alleging that the ground reality differed. He said public concerns on issues affecting daily life should be heard and addressed. “We live in a democracy. The government should listen to people’s grievances and work towards resolving them,” Kejriwal said. The AAP leader also referred to the criticism faced by people who have raised concerns over E20-blended petrol, saying that those expressing their views on the issue should not be labelled or dismissed. “Those raising concerns about E20 petrol are citizens who are sharing their experiences. Their concerns should be heard,” he said. Kejriwal said his visit was aimed at understanding the experiences of ordinary consumers and bringing their feedback into public discussion. He added that decisions affecting people should take into account their feedback and concerns.
