(PTI Photo) NEW DELHI: Kerala governor Rajendra Arlekar on Wednesday approved the portfolio allocation recommended by chief minister VD Satheesan, the Lok Bhavan said, two days after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government was sworn in.The UDF returned to power in Kerala after a decade, defeating the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the April 9 assembly elections. The alliance secured 102 seats in the 140-member assembly, including 63 won by the Congress.Satheesan, who served as leader of opposition in the previous assembly, will oversee 35 departments, including finance, law, general administration, and ports.Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, who was a contender for the chief minister’s post before Satheesan was chosen, has been given the key home portfolio. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, agreed to hear the petition filed by the organisation ‘Community Against Drunken Driving’.Advocate Vipin Nair, appearing for the petitioner, argued before the court that the definition of a “bottle” under the excise regime remained “vague” and required standardisation.“They are confusing fruit juice with liquor. They use photo of apple and the pack contains Vodka,” he said, while stressing that the State has a responsibility to protect the health of citizens.The petition has sought directions to the Centre to formulate a uniform policy for all states and Union Territories and immediately prohibit the sale of alcohol in packaging formats such as tetra packs and sachets.“The state has a moral duty to raise nutrition, standard of living, improve health, but in this case it appears the state is only focussed on raising revenue by exposing the public to excessive use of alcohol especially the young. The state government is prioritizing revenue over public health,” said Prince Singhal, road safety expert and founder of Community Against Drunken Driving (CADD).“Selling alcohol in tetra packs is profitable to the producers due to lower cost of production, lesser wastage, easier portability. It is also beneficial to the government as it increases sale, is lucrative for the customer adding to the revenue. NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi after he alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah were “traitors” who had worked to “sell India”.BJP president Natin Nabin termed Rahul’s statement “regrettable” and said his continuous electoral defeats and the resulting frustration were now manifesting in his temperament and character.“Rahul Gandhi’s statement today is deeply unfortunate and, in a way, reveals his anarchic mindset. I believe that in the context of Indian politics, where propriety and social harmony are intertwined with the mutual respect accorded to one another, his statement is truly regrettable. I feel that his continuous electoral defeats and the ensuing frustration are now manifesting in his temperament and character,” Nabin said.“It is this very desperation and despondency that are driving him to make such statements today. I question the manner in which you choose your words: Is the eradication of Naxalism an act of treason? Is safeguarding this country’s territory an act of treason? Is elevating the global prestige of India’s Tricolour an act of treason?” he added.The BJP’s response came after Rahul, speaking at a rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli, alleged that the BJP had insulted freedom fighters such as Mahatma Gandhi and B. R. Ambedkar. He also reiterated that the Modi government’s policies had damaged India’s economy.“When these RSS workers come before you, they will speak of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi after he alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah were “traitors” who had worked to “sell India”.BJP president Natin Nabin termed Rahul’s statement “regrettable” and said his continuous electoral defeats and the resulting frustration were now manifesting in his temperament and character.“Rahul Gandhi’s statement today is deeply unfortunate and, in a way, reveals his anarchic mindset. I believe that in the context of Indian politics, where propriety and social harmony are intertwined with the mutual respect accorded to one another, his statement is truly regrettable. I feel that his continuous electoral defeats and the ensuing frustration are now manifesting in his temperament and character,” Nabin said.“It is this very desperation and despondency that are driving him to make such statements today. I question the manner in which you choose your words: Is the eradication of Naxalism an act of treason? Is safeguarding this country’s territory an act of treason? Is elevating the global prestige of India’s Tricolour an act of treason?” he added.The BJP’s response came after Rahul, speaking at a rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli, alleged that the BJP had insulted freedom fighters such as Mahatma Gandhi and B. R. Ambedkar. He also reiterated that the Modi government’s policies had damaged India’s economy.“When these RSS workers come before you, they will speak of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. ANI file photo NEW DELHI: Medical students in India may soon receive greater exposure to clinical research, ethics, scientific writing and research methodology as part of a new National Medical Commission (NMC)-Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) initiative aimed at integrating research more closely with mainstream medical education and patient care.Artificial Intelligence is expected to become another major component of the programme. Authorities are examining ways to integrate AI tools into clinical research for data analysis, predictive modelling, evidence generation and research support, while also developing ethical and regulatory safeguards for AI-enabled medical research.NMC chairperson, Dr. Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth, said a draft framework is currently being prepared by an expert committee jointly constituted by NMC and ICMR. The proposal aims to build a stronger research culture in Indian medical colleges and improve India’s capacity for evidence-based healthcare research.Under the proposed framework, medical colleges may introduce post-doctoral PhD programmes to strengthen advanced medical research. At the same time, undergraduate and postgraduate students may receive structured exposure to research methodology, clinical trials, scientific publication practices and ethical conduct of clinical research during their medical training.Officials said the initiative seeks to connect medical research more closely with patient care so that research findings can translate faster into India-specific healthcare solutions.The proposal also focuses on improving training in thesis preparation, scientific writing and research assessment. Medical students and faculty may receive guidance on thesis selection, publication standards and responsible conduct of clinical studies.The framework additionally seeks to strengthen competency-based research education and clinical research awareness among students, teachers and healthcare professionals.
