The Delhi High Court granted interim relief to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, ordering the removal of AI-generated deepfakes and synthetic media across digital platforms. The court recognized Tharoor’s enforceable personality and publicity rights, barring the misappropriation of his name, image, voice, and speaking style for any commercial, political, or malicious purpose. NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court Saturday granted interim relief to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on his plea seeking protection of personality rights, and ordered removal of AI generated deepfakes, including fabricated videos maliciously showing him praising Pakistan, across digital platforms.Being a “respected and recognised public figure”, Tharoor holds enforceable personality and publicity rights over all identifiable aspects of his persona, Justice Mini Pushkarna ruled. The court barred anyone from reproducing, misappropriating or imitating Tharoor’s name, image or visual likeness, distinct voice, signature oratorical cadence, manner of speaking, and highly refined vocabulary.Justice Pushkarna said the Thiruvananthapuram MP’s “reputation, goodwill, name, physical appearance/image/likeness, voice, mannerisms, styles, signature oratorical style and other attributes are uniquely identifiable and associated with him”.The HC said no one can create, publish or disseminate any synthetic media, deepfakes, voice-cloned audio or morphed video, through the use of AI, generative AI, machine learning or any other technology for any commercial, political or malicious purpose, across any physical or virtual medium.The court directed XCorp to remove specific links containing the disputed content and also instructed Meta to ensure that the identified Instagram URLs, which had already been blocked, remain inaccessible. It also ordered both platforms to disclose the identities and subscriber details of those who had allegedly uploaded or created the content within three weeks.Tharoor had approached the court seeking a permanent injunction against the alleged misuse of his personality, voice, likeness and public image through AI-generated deepfake videos that falsely depict him making politically sensitive remarks. According to his civil suit, the manipulated videos caused significant damage to his public image. They briefed Kharge and Rahul first, before the top duo met the CM claimants separately.Sources said the party does not want to displease any of the leaders who are left out, and is keen to evolve a consensus. “Else the decision would have been announced by now,” a source said. 12 It’s a Thursday morning, and three directors and several shareholders of a seafood company are gathered around a conference table, absorbed in a presentation on food packaging. “Good packaging adds value to a product; it can even fetch a higher price,” says the instructor at the Indian Institute of Packaging, in Marathi.As the directors nod, the silver tinsel in the pechak-che gajre in their hair and the gold naths in their noses gleam. The Koli women have never attended a workshop. Nor have they ever worked for a company – let alone run one. Yet they are directors of Daryavardi Producer Company Limited (DPCL), Mumbai’s first fish farmer producer organisation: a community-owned enterprise led entirely by Koli women that aims to transform their fish-vending trade from a cottage industry to a corporate venture. They already have 1,000 shareholders from the community. Besides delivering fish, masalas and snacks, they are diversifying into running live food counters and selling online. A community kitchen is up, a cloud kitchen is in the works, and exports are being explored. April marked three years since company’s formation. “We didn’t realise packaging affects shelf life; we always sold fish in polythene bags,” says Pratibha Patil, a director from Juhu Koliwada. “We’ve now learnt that packaging that is leakproof and attractive is not only more hygienic but can also help us sell more.”For 600 years, Koli women have plied their trade as they learnt it: moving in a straight line from landing centres and wholesale markets to independent sales counters. Even as markets evolved and competition cut into profits, their model remained largely unchanged. But new currents are now coursing through the community, altering the way its women do business. And better packaging is only part of the shift. The larger picture includes streamlined operations, centralised logistics, product development, digital payments, soft-skills training, branding and marketing – all the functions of a modern business reshaping Koli commerce. “We decided to follow the Amul model, bringing together Koli women to collectively produce and market fish and fish-based products.
