. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday departed for the UAE as part of his five-nation tour from May 15 to May 20. After the UAE, the Prime Minister will also visit the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy.The visit is expected to reinforce India’s growing engagement with Europe and the Gulf region amid evolving geopolitical and economic ties.PM Modi will begin his five-nation tour with a visit to the United Arab Emirates on May 15, where he is scheduled to hold talks with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. According to ministry of external Affairs, discussions are expected to focus on energy cooperation, trade, investment and regional issues of mutual interest.UAE minister of state for international cooperation Reem Al Hashimy described PM Modi as a “true treasure” for the leadership and people of the Emirates, saying bilateral ties are set to scale “new mountain tops” in trade and technology.Speaking to ANI, Al Hashimy said the UAE was looking forward to the visit and described PM Modi as a central figure in the long-standing partnership between the two countries. NEW DELHI: In a pro-religious practice stand, the Centre told a nine-judge SC bench that the constitutional mandate under Article 25(1) entitling all persons equal “freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess, practice and propagate religion” did not provide for gender equality.In his rejoinder, SG Tushar Mehta told a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices B V Nagarathna, M M Sundresh, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Aravind Kumar, A G Masih, P B Varale, R Mahadevan and J Bagchi, “Article 25(1) does not provide for gender equality for the simple reason that Articles 15 and 16 already prohibit discrimination on the grounds, inter alia, of ‘sex’.”He said the expression ‘equally entitled’ conveyed non-discrimination on grounds of belief, faith, worship, religion or denomination. Every denomination was entitled to prescribe different modes of worship, beliefs and rituals for men and women.Advocating a hands-off approach for courts in religious issues, Mehta said only the legislature could bring about social reform through wide deliberations and discussions by representatives of people in Parliament or assemblies.“If courts may reform religion in the absence of legislation, whenever they determine that a practice offends the Constitution, there is, in practice, no limit on the judicial reformation of religious traditions. Every denomination’s internal discipline, every temple’s mode of worship, every faith’s institutional arrangements become permanently available for constitutional challenge. This consequence is not hypothetical, it has occurred in the Sabarimala case,” Mehta added.He added that the Constitution did not envisage constitutional courts as the “reformatory overlord of religious traditions of 1.4 billion citizens”. The bench reserved its verdict after a 16-day hearing spread over five weeks.Senior advocates Gopal Subramanium, C S Vaidyanathan, Rakesh Dwivedi and Rajeev Dhavan agreed with the SG’s stand. Subramanium said Articles 25 and 26, which confer individual and group religious rights, operated on separate spheres and hence there could not be any conflict between them to warrant judicial interference for a harmonious interpretation.Like individuals, every denomination had the right to practice, profess and propagate its religion, he said, adding, “Denominations survive because of its spiritual leaders and its own inner strength.”Dhavan, who appeared as a party in person, said Article 26 was most important as without denomination, there was no follower and no individual right to profess a religion. “Without property and institution (like temple, mosque or church), no denomination can survive. To manage the property and propagate its faith, the denomination needs autonomy,” he said.For Nair Service Society, Vaidyanathan said it would be wrong to presume that without an individual’s right to freedom of religion, there would be no denominational rights. “A denomination’s right to manage its religious affairs is not an aggregation of its individual members’ personal rights to practise religion. NEW DELHI: Invoking spirituality in the multi-billion-dollar property dispute over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s estate, Supreme Court on Thursday reminded his mother and his wife of the transience of life and said it was always better to resolve issues amicably than fight endlessly.The court-directed mediation process hit an obstacle before it started, with Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, alleging that two new independent directors were being appointed in the company to reduce her say and Priya Kapur contending that it was being done at RBI’s directive. A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan appealed to them to be accommodative and not go into mediation with prejudiced minds. SC also directed that no director be appointed in the meantime.The bench asked Priya to treat her mother-in-law with a little care, pointing out that she was 80 years old and grief-stricken. It urged both parties not to do anything that would derail mediation proceedings. “Put an end to the dispute amicably, or it will be a very long-drawn battle,” the bench said.Asking both parties to compromise a bit, SC said, “We all came into this world with empty hands, and we have to leave the world with empty hands. All we carry is our souls. NEW DELHI: Invoking spirituality in the multi-billion-dollar property dispute over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s estate, Supreme Court on Thursday reminded his mother and his wife of the transience of life and said it was always better to resolve issues amicably than fight endlessly.The court-directed mediation process hit an obstacle before it started, with Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, alleging that two new independent directors were being appointed in the company to reduce her say and Priya Kapur contending that it was being done at RBI’s directive. A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan appealed to them to be accommodative and not go into mediation with prejudiced minds. SC also directed that no director be appointed in the meantime.The bench asked Priya to treat her mother-in-law with a little care, pointing out that she was 80 years old and grief-stricken. It urged both parties not to do anything that would derail mediation proceedings. “Put an end to the dispute amicably, or it will be a very long-drawn battle,” the bench said.Asking both parties to compromise a bit, SC said, “We all came into this world with empty hands, and we have to leave the world with empty hands. All we carry is our souls. NEW DELHI: DG Shipping, the maritime regulator, on Thursday prohibited 366 foreign-flagged vessels from engaging Indian seafarers as they are accused of abandoning sailors – through non-payment of wages, denial of compensation in death or missing cases, subjecting crew members to undue hardships and lack of assistance in repatriation of Indian seafarers. This is a violation of national maritime regulations and international obligations, DG Shipping said while cautioning Recruitment and Placement Service Licence (RPSL) holders against placing seafarers on these vessels. In a circular issued to RPSL companies and all Indian seafarers, it put 278 vessels under “restricted” category and the remaining 88 under “blacklisted” category. DG Shipping also directed all RPSLs to submit details of Indian seafarers engaged on these vessels within 14 days. “…in view of the grave violations of seafarer welfare, abandonment practices and non-compliance with international conventions, the 366 vessels are hereby prohibited from engaging Indian seafarers through any RPSL company approved by DG Shipping with immediate effect, unless compliance with the foregoing provisions is duly ensured,” the maritime regulator said in its order. NEW DELHI: National Medical Commission has directed all medical colleges across the country to submit detailed annual disclosure reports by May 30 for renewal of MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic session, warning that no extension will be granted beyond the deadline.In a notice issued by the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board, the NMC said all existing medical colleges with approval to run MBBS courses must upload mandatory institutional data on the commission’s portal under the Maintenance of Standards of Medical Education Regulations, 2023.The disclosure process forms a key part of the annual renewal mechanism through which colleges receive permission to continue admitting undergraduate medical students.The NMC has also made it mandatory for colleges to pay an online processing fee of 3.54 lakh, including GST, through the designated portal while applying for renewal of MBBS seats. “No other mode of payment will be accepted,” the notice stated.The commission warned colleges to ensure that all information uploaded on the portal is accurate and consistent across different NMC boards, adding that submitted data may be made public if required.Colleges will not be allowed to edit information once the application is submitted.About the AuthorAnuja JaiswalAnuja Jaiswal is a Senior Assistant Editor at The Times of India, with an impressive 18-year career in narrative journalism.
