India restores nearly 22 million hectares of degraded land, says Bhupender Yadav at UN conference NEW DELHI: India has restored nearly 22 million hectares of degraded and deforested land during the 2011-20 period as against its target of restoring 26 million hectares by 2030, said Union minister Bhupender Yadav at a UN conference Monday, reports Vishwa Mohan.While addressing the 17th session (CO) of the UNCCD conference in Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia, he also pitched for “diversified, adequate, predictable and sustained international finance” for land restoration and drought resilience, saying it is not a cost, but an investment in food, water, biodiversity, livelihood and long-term resilience.Underlining how the country’s restoration efforts had generated approximately 1.2 billion person-days of employment during the 2011-20 period, he said these figures demonstrated restoration could deliver both environmental and socio-economic outcomes by reviving degraded landscapes while creating employment and supporting rural livelihoods.Get the latest India News and Live updates. Abhishek Banerjee NEW DELHI: Trinamool general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has moved the Supreme Court seeking an expeditious decision by Speaker Om Birla on petitions seeking disqualification of the 20 rebel party MPs who have aligned themselves with Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).According to the SC website, a bench comprising CJI and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana has listed Banerjee’s plea for hearing on Aug 25.The petition challenges the delay in deciding on the disqualification proceedings against the rebel MPs. In the recently concluded Monsoon session, Banerjee had also met LS Speaker Om Birla on Aug 12 to reiterate his demand for a speedy decision.Get the latest India News and Live updates. Abhishek Banerjee NEW DELHI: Trinamool general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has moved the Supreme Court seeking an expeditious decision by Speaker Om Birla on petitions seeking disqualification of the 20 rebel party MPs who have aligned themselves with Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).According to the SC website, a bench comprising CJI and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana has listed Banerjee’s plea for hearing on Aug 25.The petition challenges the delay in deciding on the disqualification proceedings against the rebel MPs. In the recently concluded Monsoon session, Banerjee had also met LS Speaker Om Birla on Aug 12 to reiterate his demand for a speedy decision.Get the latest India News and Live updates. SC to decide on Tejpal’s plea against surrender after 10-year rape conviction NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Monday said it would pass order on former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal’s plea seeking exemption from surrender after Bombay High Court convicted and sentenced him to 10 years of imprisonment in a 2013 rape case, with Goa govt opposing his plea and contending that his appeal was not admissible since the convict had not filed a separate application seeking exemption from surrender or shown a certificate that he has already surrendered as per Order XXII Rule 5 of the Supreme Court Rules, 2013.The matter was heard by a single judge, Justice Alok Aradhe. Suppose the court says no stay, I will have to go to jail,” Sibal said, requesting the court to list the appeal for Aug 31.After hearing both sides, Justice Aradhe said he would pass an appropriate order in the matter.The Goa bench of Bombay high court convicted Tejpal under multiple provisions of the IPC and sentenced him to 10 years rigorous imprisonment each under sections 376(2)(f) and 376(2)(k), with the sentences to run concurrently. It also imposed additional concurrent sentences for offences relating to outraging a woman’s modesty, sexual harassment, disrobing, wrongful restraint and wrongful confinement.
