PM Modi NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi strongly condemned the drone attacks on Fujairah in the UAE, which resulted in injuries to three Indian nationals, saying targeting civilians and infrastructure is unacceptable. Like in his past condemnation of attacks on the UAE and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Modi didn’t name Iran, but said India stood in firm solidarity with the UAE and reiterated support for the peaceful resolution of all issues through dialogue and diplomacy. On X, Modi also said ensuring safe and unimpeded navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is vital for enduring regional peace, stability and global energy security. Modi will visit the UAE, a key strategic partner in the Gulf, on his way to Europe this month for a quick layover during which he will meet President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Both external affairs minister S Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval have visited the UAE since the US-Iran ceasefire was announced.In a separate statement, the ministry of external affairs called the attacks on Fujairah unacceptable and sought immediate cessation of hostilities and the targeting of civilian infrastructure and innocent civilians. “India continues to stand for dialogue and diplomacy to deal with the situation, so that peace and stability may be restored across West Asia. We also call for free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the Strait of Hormuz in keeping with international law,” it said, adding India stood ready to support all efforts for a peaceful resolution of issues. The UAE foreign ministry described the attacks, which originated allegedly in Iran, as a serious escalation and said they posed a direct threat to the country’s security. NEW DELHI: Supreme Court has appealed to courts to consider granting bail to accused in case of delay in trial, irrespective of gravity of offence, as the right of speedy trial is a fundamental right, reports Amit Anand Choudhary. A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi granted bail to a murder accused on that ground, noting he had been in jail for four years and not a single witness had been examined during the trial. “We are mindful of the fact that the petitioner is charged with the offence of murder, but time and again, we have said howsoever serious the crime may be, if the right of speedy trial is infringed, then the court must consider the plea for bail appropriately. Here is a case wherein past almost four years, the petitioner is in jail, but not a single witness has been examined,” the bench said. “We order that the petitioner be released on bail forthwith, if not required in any other case, subject to terms and conditions that the trial court may deem fit to impose,” it said. NEW DELHI: A Parsi woman Tuesday questioned a decision of the Valsad Parsi Panchayat barring women who married men of another faith from attending funeral rites of their parents, and challenged a Gujarat high court judgment that stated a woman’s religion is extinguished with marriage as she embraces the husband’s religion. Appearing for Goolrokh M Gupta, senior advocate Darius J Khambata told a nine-judge bench led by CJI Surya Kant that most Parsi Panchayats impose no restrictions on community women even if they marry outside Zoroastrian faith, but the Valsad Parsi Panchayat had imposed restrictions, which do not apply to Parsi men marrying women professing another religion. Khambata asked how the woman, who continued to practise Zoroastrianism for all purposes even after marrying a Hindu man under the Special Marriage Act, could be deprived of or discriminated against from entering the place of worship. Parsi Panchayat is an administrative body and not a religious denomination that can create practices not prescribed in religion, especially when they are not applicable to men from the community, he said.
