The name India was given by foreigners for their convenience. We need not be guided by what outsiders thought. Guru Ghasidas Central University (Image courtesy: ggu.ac.in) NEW DELHI: Guru Ghasidas Central University in Chhattisgarh, a central university, will now use “Bharat” instead of “India” on its marksheets and official communications, Vice Chancellor Alok Kumar Chakrawal said on Saturday.According to Chakrawal, the Bilaspur-based university’s standing committee passed a resolution on this about six months ago.“At present, university marksheets and degree certificates carry references to both India and Bharat in English and Hindi respectively. Under the new decision, India appearing in English will also be replaced with Bharat,” he told PTI.He added that the change will be implemented once the existing stock of marksheets and degree certificates is used up.Explaining the decision, the Vice Chancellor pointed to the use of “Bharat” during the G20 Summit held in India in 2023.“During the G20 meetings, the Honourable President used the word ‘Bharat’ in an official dinner invitation. When the highest constitutional authority in the country follows this tradition, we are also following it. It is a matter of our tradition,” Chakrawal noted.He also emphasised that the term “Bharat” has deep historical and cultural roots.“Historically, the region of Aryavarta and Jambudweep has been referred to as Bharat. The name India was given by foreigners for their convenience. We need not be guided by what outsiders thought. Our culture and tradition have always referred to the country as Bharat, and we are making an effort to reinforce that tradition,” he added.Meanwhile, officials from some state universities, including Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya in Raipur and Atal Bihari Vajpayee University in Bilaspur, clarified that no such decision has been taken by their institutes so far and no official guidelines have been issued.Get the latest India news and live updates. Pawan Khera takes a jab at PM Modi over his G7 meeting with Congress NEW DELHI: Congress leader Pawan Khera has on Saturday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi failed to raise key issues during his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the G7 summit, including the deaths of Indian sailors, the one-sided US trade deal, and the Operation Sindoor ceasefire claims made by Trump.Khera said PM Modi should learn from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on how to respond with confidence.”Narendra Modi does not want to learn from Indira Gandhi ji; at the very least, learn from Giorgia Meloni ji how to respond with eye-to-eye confidence,” he said.The deaths of Indian sailorsThree Indian sailors were killed when the US military struck the Palau-flagged oil tanker MT Settebello in the Gulf of Oman, accusing it of violating the US blockade on Iranian ports . The victims were identified as Aditya Sharma, a cadet, Shivanand Chaurashiya, a fitter, and Patnala Suresh, a chief engineer .India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned US Charge d’Affaires Jason Meeks and lodged a “strong protest” over the deaths . 16 drug combinations banned by Centre over safety concerns NEW DELHI: The Centre has banned 16 fixed-dose combination (FDC) medicines, including certain antibiotic, pain-relief and skin-treatment products, after expert panels found that they lacked therapeutic justification and were not supported by scientific evidence.The health ministry on Friday prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of these medicines with immediate effect under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.The action follows a Supreme Court-directed review of fixed-dose combinations sold in the country. As part of the exercise, the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) set up an expert committee to examine whether such drug combinations were scientifically justified and safe for patients.Based on the committee’s recommendations, the government concluded that 16 combinations were irrational and that their continued use was not considered beneficial in relation to the potential risks involved.The banned products include combinations containing antibiotics such as amoxicillin, cefuroxime and cefadroxyl, medicines used for pain relief and abdominal cramps, and several aloe vera-based dermatological preparations.Among the combinations prohibited are Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase, Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase + Lactobacillus Sporogenes, Cefuroxime + Serratiopeptidase, Cefadroxyl + Probenecid, Dicyclomine + Paracetamol + Clidinium Bromide + Chlordiazepoxide, and a number of aloe vera-based skin formulations.According to the ministry, expert committees found that the available scientific evidence did not support the use of these combinations. The government said the move is aimed at ensuring that only safe, effective and scientifically validated medicines remain available to the public.Officials said the latest action is part of a continuing effort to promote rational use of medicines and strengthen patient safety. As part of the exercise, the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) set up an expert committee to examine whether such drug combinations were scientifically justified and safe for patients.Based on the committee’s recommendations, the government concluded that 16 combinations were irrational and that their continued use was not considered beneficial in relation to the potential risks involved.The banned products include combinations containing antibiotics such as amoxicillin, cefuroxime and cefadroxyl, medicines used for pain relief and abdominal cramps, and several aloe vera-based dermatological preparations.Among the combinations prohibited are Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase, Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase + Lactobacillus Sporogenes, Cefuroxime + Serratiopeptidase, Cefadroxyl + Probenecid, Dicyclomine + Paracetamol + Clidinium Bromide + Chlordiazepoxide, and a number of aloe vera-based skin formulations.According to the ministry, expert committees found that the available scientific evidence did not support the use of these combinations. The government said the move is aimed at ensuring that only safe, effective and scientifically validated medicines remain available to the public.Officials said the latest action is part of a continuing effort to promote rational use of medicines and strengthen patient safety.
