Representative image NEW DELHI: Meta has submitted its response to the Centre’s concerns over WhatsApp’s proposed “username” feature, with the ministry of electronics and information technology examining whether the safeguards outlined by the company are adequate to prevent impersonation, phishing and online fraud.Sources said WhatsApp’s reply was received late Thursday night following consultations between Meta representatives and MeitY officials. The ministry had earlier directed the company not to introduce the feature in India until the consultation process was completed. A source said the ministry is assessing the feature’s legal, privacy and cybersecurity implications.The proposed feature will allow users to create a unique identifier beginning with “@” and interact with others without disclosing their phone numbers. Officials have flagged the possibility of fraudsters creating names resembling those of govt departments, public figures, businesses and individuals to deceive users. Concerns have also been raised about its potential use in phishing, digital-arrest scams and other impersonation-based offences.Meta plans to reserve usernames associated with govt bodies, public figures and verified accounts for their legitimate owners. Similar-looking variations of prominent names will also be blocked. WhatsApp has proposed additional safeguards, including limits on the number of new users an account can contact. Representative image NEW DELHI: Govt has directed all states and UT administrations to strictly follow the “correct script and diction” while singing or playing the national song and national anthem.In a letter to state chief secretaries and UT administrators Thursday, the home ministry said when the state song is sung or played with the national song and anthem, both the national song and national anthem shall be sung or played. “The national song will be sung or played first followed by the national anthem,” it said.This means that the state song – sung in some states at official functions and ceremonies – cannot be sung in between the national song and national anthem. The order will require the state song to be played first, followed by the national song and finally the national anthem.On its directive to strictly follow the correct script/text and diction/pronunciations while playing the national song – which is to be played in full, comprising all six stanzas – and national anthem, the ministry said their correct script and diction can be found on its portal.”It is requested that suitable instructions in this regard may please be issued to concerned institutions/organisations under your jurisdiction for strict compliance,” stated the letter.Get the latest India news and live updates. Earlier this year, IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said that the Centre was in discussions with social media companies on age-based safeguards, and industry reports indicated that IT ministry officials had since held multiple meetings with platforms and other stakeholders.Last week, govt directed Instagram to remove advertisements linked to child sexual abuse, while a June report by the home ministry highlighted the use of Telegram for sharing child sexual abuse material.Several states have announced plans to restrict social media access for children. Karnataka has proposed a ban for users below 16 years and Andhra Pradesh for those below 13. Goa is examining similar measures.
