NEW DELHI: Enforcement Directorate’s freeze on three HDFC Bank accounts, which hold Rs 440 crore of Trinamool Congress, is likely to remain in force despite a Calcutta HC order relaxing the restraint imposed by Kolkata Police on all TMC bank accounts in view of claims by the party’s breakaway faction to the money.Sources in the agency said ED was not a party to the petition on which the HC gave its judgment, and that the court was dealing with Kolkata Police’s action in restraining the two TMC factions from operating the accounts. The freeze on three of 18 TMC accounts by ED under Section 17 of PMLA was not the matter being decided by the HC.Section 17 deals with the directorate’s powers to conduct search and seizure, while Section 17(1A) empowers it to seize assets. The merit of ED’s actions is then decided by the adjudicating authority. The legal process under PMLA allows for appeal to higher judicial authority after the adjudicating authority has given its order. The remaining TMC accounts include seven with Indian Bank in Kolkata, four with SBI – two each in Delhi and Kolkata – and an account with Union Bank’s Dharmatala branch in Kolkata.ED’s freezing of accounts is based on its claim to have found evidence of Rs 160 crore allegedly laundered by some TMC members through an aviation company to purchase a plane and a helicopter.ED had claimed Wednesday its “investigation revealed that around Rs 160 crore was transferred from TMC bank accounts to Carewell Aviation India and its related entity, mostly between April 2023 to June 2026″.”Carewell Aviation routed Rs 82.9 crore to another newly incorporated related entity for purchasing an aircraft Embraer Legacy 600 and one chopper Agusta 109 Grand New and Rs 112 crore was used for making the said purchases,” it had said.In addition, it said .7 million was arranged as an unsecured loan from one Cayman Islands based entity to purchase the helicopter. It is probing the Cayman Island connection with the aircraft and chopper purchased using the TMC funds.Meanwhile, in Kolkata, TMC’s breakaway group led by Ritabrata Banerjee said it will challenge the HC order by filing a special leave petition before SC, and make ED a party to the case.Get the latest India news and live updates. Rules Out Parallel Fuel Supply System NEW DELHI: Govt Friday ruled out offering pure petrol, lower ethanol-petrol blends as options to E20 saying it won’t be feasible, amid a debate and demand that people should have choice for 100% petrol and E10 as well. It also said E20 offers a higher-octane rating, superior anti-knock characteristics, faster combustion, better pickup, smoother acceleration and cleaner engine operation. In an official release, petroleum ministry said maintaining parallel nationwide supply chains would increase logistics costs and complicate distribution across more than one lakh retail outlets as it won’t be feasible for petrol pumps to offer multiple fuel grades such as pure petrol, E10 and E20.”Once a superior fuel has been scientifically validated, extensively tested and accepted by the automotive industry, the objective should be to move forward with confidence not to retreat to an inferior standard,” the petroleum ministry said.It said govt had held several rounds of consultations with automobile manufacturers, technical experts, testing agencies and other stakeholders before rolling out E20 fuel. “Had automobile manufacturers not been fully satisfied with the results, they would never have stood behind the product or honoured vehicle warranties,” the ministry saidIndia achieved 20% ethanol blending in petrol in April 2025 and at present, E20 fuel is the standard petrol variant across the country.Govt also rejected the idea of reverting to E10 fuel, saying dedicated ethanol plants, distilleries, storage facilities and logistics networks have been created to meet India’s blending targets, backed by bank loans of nearly Rs 1 lakh crore.”What happens to the surplus production capacity? What happens to thousands of crores invested by farmers, cooperatives, entrepreneurs, financial institutions and public sector companies in good faith based on a national policy? Public policy must balance consumer interest with energy security, environmental sustainability, farmer welfare and prudent use of national resources,” the ministry said.On why blended fuel was not cheaper, the ministry said ethanol was being procured around Rs 72 per litre – a remunerative price to support farmers – making E20 costlier to produce than pure petrol. It added that E20-blended petrol would become cheaper than regular fuel if crude prices rose to 0-130 a barrel, the levels seen during the peak of the West Asia conflict. The ministry also mentioned that India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, serviced 1.5 crore “older and non-E20-certified vehicles” in 2025-26 and found no E20-linked corrosion, abnormal wear or component-life damage. Two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp also reported similar field experience, it said.”If E20 were genuinely damaging rubber components, fuel lines or engines, we would have witnessed lakhs of warranty claims, widespread component failures and an avalanche of complaints across the country,” govt said.It also dismissed concerns over vehicles labelled “E10 compatible”, saying they do not become unsafe simply because fuel standards evolve later after extensive scientific testing, engineering validation and regulatory approval.Get the latest India news and live updates. In February, the High Court directed Rajpal Yadav to surrender before the concerned jail authorities. NEW DELHI: Delhi HC Friday upheld the conviction of actor Rajpal Yadav in multiple cheque-bounce cases and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment. “Law is not a script that can be rewritten at the will of an actor, nor can legal positions be altered with every change of strategy, whosoever the litigant may be,” Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma observed.HC ordered Yadav to pay over Rs 1 crore to the complainant in each of the seven cases. The Rs 2 crore (approx.) already paid by the actor shall be adjusted, HC said, keeping the sentence in abeyance for two months to allow Yadav time to appeal. HC also fined the actor’s wife, Radha Rajpal Yadav, around Rs 5.5 lakh in each case, payable to the complainant, and warned of a three-month jail term if she fails to pay.In a 108-page verdict, HC said Yadav repeatedly failed to honour his undertakings on making payment to the complainant, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd, and while the court made “earnest efforts” to facilitate an amicable resolution in the matter, the actor ultimately categorically refused to make any further payment.During the hearing, Yadav stated that he would rather go to jail five times than return the money, to which Justice Sharma responded that if a litigant wished to choose imprisonment rather than abide by multiple undertakings he submitted in court, it was his choice.According to the 2013 complaint, Yadav tendered seven cheques towards settlement of Rs 5 crore financial assistance to him for a film in 2010, which were dishonoured.Get the latest India news and live updates.
