Vijay; P Chidambaram NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday took a swipe at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, remarking that “governance offers no retakes” — in a pointed reference to the actor-politician’s film career.“Governance is not easy. I have governed for about 20 years, and I can say it is not a simple task. In governance, there are no retakes,” Chidambaram said during a roadshow in Sivaganga. He was referring to his decades-long political career, during which he held key portfolios such as home and finance, among others, in various Congress-led governments at the Centre.“In cinema, if a scene doesn’t come out well, the director can ask for another take. But in administration, that’s not possible. Once a decision is made, there is no retake. The decision stands as it is,” the senior Congressman added.Vijay, a superstar in Tamil cinema, launched TVK in February 2024. The party is contesting all 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu, where assembly elections will be held on April 23, with counting scheduled for May 4.Meanwhile, Chidambaram also criticised Vijay for skipping his scheduled speech at Friday’s election rally in Karaikudi.“He left without even speaking. How is that acceptable? Politics is about speaking, isn’t it? He has not met the press. He is not interacting with the people either. Look at me, I come to you. I have served as home minister and finance minister. I travel alone by car. Every time I come, I am ready to speak. I am always prepared for a debate if there is one,” the Rajya Sabha MP stated.According to TVK sources, Vijay could not address the rally due to a delay in reaching Karaikudi from Madurai, a distance of around 100 km. They attributed the delay to “massive crowds” along the route, pushing his arrival at the venue back by nearly four hours.By the time his convoy reached the venue, the official time permitted by the police for the event had expired, forcing the TVK chief to briefly wave to the crowd before leaving.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. BJP leader Biman Ghosh (Photo credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: Supporters of the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party clashed during an election campaign on Friday in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, news agency ANI reported.Biman Ghosh, BJP’s candidate from the Pursurah Assembly constituency, alleged that four party workers sustained minor injuries in the incident. He also said that a FIR is being filed at the local police station.Speaking to ANI, Ghosh accused TMC workers of disrupting the campaign and warned of a strong electoral outcome for the BJP. He said, “They (the TMC members) were creating a ruckus during the election campaign; they, too, must realise what awaits them after the 4th, when a BJP ‘tsunami’ sweeps across Bengal. It would be best for them to mend their ways before it is too late. Four of our workers have sustained minor injuries, and we are filing an FIR at the police station”.The incident comes at a time when campaigning has intensified ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, with both parties trading sharp political attacks.Earlier on Friday, the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP engaged in a war of words over the BJP’s recently released Bengal Sankalp Patra. The document, themed around “Sonar Bangla” (Golden Bengal), outlines a proposed shift in governance, with a focus on national security, youth employment and women’s safety.Launching the manifesto in Kolkata, Union home minister Amit Shah described it as a roadmap to transform governance in the state and align it with the broader vision of a “Viksit Bharat”.Shah also criticised the Trinamool Congress government, alleging that 15 years of its rule had resulted in a breakdown of law and order and widespread public dissatisfaction. He said the manifesto aimed to bring “every section of Bengal out of despair” and offer “a new way forward for farmers surrounded by fear”.He further claimed that people in the state were “frightened and disillusioned” and were seeking change, reiterating that the BJP’s governance model aligns with the vision of national development.Polling for the 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting scheduled for May 4.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. NEW DELHI: With his resignation on Friday, former Allahabad high court judge Justice Yashwant Varma saved himself from the embarrassment of being the first judge to be “removed” through a motion adopted in Parliament.Lok Sabha had admitted the motion to initiate proceedings against him in Aug last year. The law for removal of a judge of a constitutional court requires a motion for removal to be endorsed by 100 MPs in Lok Sabha if it is to be adopted. The required number is 50 in the case of Rajya Sabha. Before Justice Varma, there have been five judges of constitutional courts against whom a removal motion was adopted in Parliament — the first was from Supreme Court, Justice V Ramaswami, in 1991.However, he escaped “removal” as the motion failed to secure the required twothirds majority in LS. In 2011, Justice Soumitra Sen of Calcutta high court was the first judge against whom Rajya Sabha had voted with the required majority on aremoval motion. But the judge resigned before the motion was voted on in Lok Sabha. The same year, Justice PD Dinakaran, the then chief justice of Sikkim high court, resigned before removal proceedings were initiated against him in Rajya Sabha. In 2015, a motion was moved in Rajya Sabha against Justice JB Pardiwala of Gujarat high court — who has since been elevated to Supreme Court. However, the judge later removed a controversial statement from the judgment which had invited the action and escaped the proceedings. That same year, another motion for removal was moved in Rajya Sabha against Justice SK Gangele of Madhya Pradesh HC. However, an inquiry committee absolved the judge of sexual harassment charges. In the case of Justice Varma, the Lok Sabha speaker had admitted a motion for his removal on Aug 12, 2025. A committee of inquiry was constituted, whose legality was upheld by SC.Article 124(4) of the Constitution provides for removal of a judge of SC or HC only “by an order of the President passed after an address by each House of Parliament, supported by a majority of the total membership of that House and by a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members of that House present and voting” on grounds of “proved misbehaviour or incapacity”.The Judges (Inquiry) Act guides the removal proceedings; it provides for a threemember committee, under Section 3(2) of the Act, comprising the chief justice of India or a judge of Supreme Court, a chief justice of a high court and a noted jurist to probe on the basis of evidence if the judge was indeed guilty of “misbehaviour or incapacity”.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosFrom Prayer To Panic: Final Moments Before Mathura Boat Tragedy Emerges, Rescue Operations ContinueIndia-US Ties Get Real Boost As Vikram Misri Wraps Up Key Visit After Talks On LPG, Nuclear PowerIndia Walks Diplomatic Tightrope, Condemns Bloodshed In Lebanon, But Does Not Name IsraelDelhi Police Crack Down on ISI-Linked Spy Module, 10 Arrested; Second Network Busted After Pan-India Surveillance Plot’Chokepoints Now A Global Anxiety’: Jaishankar Invokes West Asia Crisis At Indian Ocean ConferenceMathura: Boat Carrying Devotees Capsizes In Yamuna; 10 Bodies Recovered, Rescue Ops OnQatar Assures Reliable Energy Supply To India Amid West Asia Crisis After Hardeep Puri’s Doha VisitPakistan-ISI Spy Network Busted: 11 Arrested For Recce Of Military Sites Across North IndiaCentre Notifies CAPF General Administration Act 2026; Families, Retired Officers Protest in DelhiJustice Yashwant Varma Resigns Amid Cash Row — Why He Stepped Down On Day Of Impeachment Defence123Photostories24 hours in Delhi: 10 summer-friendly street foods to enjoy in the national capitalCute first and middle names for kids born on SaturdayHow to make Kathal ke Kebab for weekend lunch6 smart small balcony layouts that maximise space effortlessly8 modern and not-so-common baby names for kids born on a FridayFrom Vivek Dahiya getting emotional during Divyanka Tripathi’s pregnancy scan to pampering her midnight cravings, the couple share their journeyHow to differentiate between naturally and chemically ripened banana: FSSAI’s rulebook on ripening temperature for the fruit4 high-profile business family feuds that made headlines globally5 things that make Bandhavgarh National Park irresistible to nature loversFrom Yashasvi Jaiswal-Maddie Hamilton to Hardik Pandya-Mahieka Sharma: 5 Indian cricketers and their rumoured girlfriends123Hot PicksIran war ceasefirePAN Card application 2026Purple cap winnerOrange cap winnerIPL Points TablePublic holidays April 2026Bank Holidays AprilTop TrendingStephen Curry charityLaura Loomer reactionIndia Lebanon civilianRajouri grenade recoveryUS stock marketPAN Card application 2026Hinjewadi Metro lineUS inflationSchool Holidays in AprilLaken Snelling case
