The couple was allegedly working for ISI through social media since 2024 (Representative image) NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have arrested a city-based couple who allegedly worked for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) through social media since 2024, officials said on Friday.The accused have been identified as Md Sahil and his wife, Sameera.According to Delhi Police’s Special Cell, which investigated the case and made the arrests, the accused couple provided logistical support to Pakistan-based handlers and procured Indian SIM cards, which were sent to Pakistan via Dubai for use by Pakistani intelligence operatives.The couple allegedly sent eight Indian SIM cards to Pakistan during 2024 and 2025 and received around Rs 30,000 in return.The probe began after the Special Cell received information about an ISI-backed Pakistani intelligence operatives network operating in the Delhi-NCR region. The network recruited locals to procure SIM cards, which were sent to Pakistan through Dubai. WhatsApp accounts were then activated using the Indian numbers and used by Pakistani operatives to enter Indian WhatsApp groups and gather sensitive information, police said.The investigation led to Sahil’s arrest. Forensic analysis of his phone revealed conversations with Pakistani agents. During interrogation, Sahil told investigators that he was introduced to a Pakistani agent on Instagram in 2024 through Sameera, whom he later married. NEW DELHI: Cockroach Janata Party founder Dipke has called for a “complete overhaul” of the country’s education system following the death of 31-year-old IIT Delhi MSc Physics student Rishikesh Kumar. Dipke said that students need an environment where they feel “supported, heard and hopeful about their future”.In a post on X, Dipke wrote: “IITs, considered among the best educational institutions in our country, have witnessed 65 student suicides in the last five years. If this is the situation at our best institutions, imagine the state of the rest. We need a complete overhaul of our education system, one that creates an environment where students feel supported, heard and hopeful about their future, rather than leaving them isolated, overwhelmed and struggling in silence.”Rishikesh died on August 22 after falling from the sixth floor of the Lecture Hall Complex. Police have said no suicide note was recovered and the circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated.Dipke’s remarks came as IIT Delhi moved to constitute a final external inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding Rishikesh’s death.The committee will be headed by retired Delhi high court judge Justice Mukta Gupta and will include Professor Pratap Sharan, head of the Department of Psychiatry at AIIMS New Delhi, four student representatives and IIT Delhi Registrar, who will serve as secretary and convenor, sources told ANI.The panel will interact with students, faculty members and administrative officials, review existing protocols and processes, and recommend measures to strengthen student support systems. India has already suffered one of the worst GLOF disasters in recent times when, on Oct 3, 2023, glacial rocks of 14.7 cubic meters collapsed in South Lhonak Lake in Sikkim NEW DELHI: The Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) disaster in Nepal on Wednesday has renewed discussion on India’s own strategy and preparedness to mitigate such risk, with the presence of approximately 200 high-risk glacial lakes in the Himalayan regions.According to the government’s survey of these glacial lakes, the Himalayan ranges are host to as many as 7,500 glacial lakes, of which 10% are in Sikkim alone. While their mapping revealed that the Ganga River basin has more than 4,700 glacial lakes, from its origin to the foothills of the Himalayas, covering a catchment area of nearly 2.5 lakh sq km, the 25 most at risk are in Sikkim.India has already suffered one of the worst GLOF disasters in recent times when, on Oct 3, 2023, glacial rocks of 14.7 cubic meters collapsed in South Lhonak Lake in Sikkim, close to midnight, generating a “20m high displacement wave”, wiping out several hydropower assets and settlements on its way downstream.In response, the Centre had set up a high-level coordination committee on GLOF disaster risk reduction. The initiative, spearheaded by PM’s principal secretary PK Mishra, was tasked with hosting multi-agency deliberations and surveys of such lakes and identifying the high-risk ones. The Centre also allocated Rs 150 crore for the National GLOF Risk Mitigation Programme for four Himalayan states having high-risk glacial lakes.The first meeting of the coordination committee on DRR was held in November 2024, when the PM’s principal secretary expressed his satisfaction with the group’s “tri-focal lens — assessment, monitoring, and mitigation”. The committee hosted regular meetings and received feedback, which then formed part of a joint strategy between states and the Centre. The Centre’s Rs 150 crore allocations were used for mitigation measures at five lakes in Sikkim and others.Previous efforts of GLOF risk reduction by setting up two solar-powered twin-camera Automated Weather Stations (AWS) at South Lhonak and Shako Cho in Sikkim had not been very effective. This was supposed to feed vital data to authorities and work as an early warning system.
