The Indian Embassy in Spain on Sunday said the two Indian crew members onboard the hantavirus-hit Dutch cruise vessel MV Hondius are “healthy and asymptomatic” and have been evacuated to the Netherlands for quarantine under health safety protocols. In a statement, the embassy said the Dutch-flagged vessel carrying around 150 people, including two Indian nationals, had arrived in Spain after anchoring off the Canary Islands following the hantavirus outbreak onboard. “The 02 Indian nationals are healthy and asymptomatic. As informed by the Spanish National Center for Emergency Monitoring and Coordination (CENEM), the 02 Indian nationals who were travelling as crew members, have been evacuated to the Netherlands where they will be quarantined as per relevant health safety protocol,” the embassy said. The embassy added that the Indian Ambassador was in close contact with Spanish authorities and the Indian nationals and was regularly monitoring the situation to ensure their safety and well-being. Passengers onboard the vessel disembarked in accordance with protocols laid down by the World Health Organization and Spanish authorities, the statement said. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization issued a technical note regarding the disembarkation and management of passengers and crew linked to the outbreak. The WHO advised member states to “Implement a risk-based approach to the identification, monitoring, and management of contacts of probable or confirmed Andes virus (ANDV) cases from the MV Hondius cruise ship and related to the event on that cruise ship. ANDV has been associated with limited human-to-human transmission, usually associated with close and prolonged contact.” According to the WHO, eight hantavirus cases, including three deaths, had been reported as of May 8. Six of the cases were laboratory-confirmed as Andes virus infections. In India, health experts sought to ease concerns over the outbreak involving the two Indian crew members. Dr Naveen Kumar, Director of the ICMR-National Institute of Virology in Pune, said the cases did not indicate community spread in India. “At present, the reported infections among Indian nationals aboard a cruise ship appear to be isolated imported cases and do not indicate community spread in India. Since hantavirus transmission is primarily rodent-borne and not easily spread between humans, the immediate public health risk remains low,” he said. Dr Kumar also noted that human-to-human transmission of hantavirus remains extremely rare.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. ‘Govt Change Sans Violence Best Proof’ NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah on Sunday said democracy is so deep rooted in India that changes happen without any bloodshed, and argued that change of govt and state boundaries without any violence are the best testaments to the strength of democracy in the country.Releasing two books – ‘The Bench, the Bar and the Bizarre’ and ‘The Lawful and the Awful’ – authored by solicitor general Tushar Mehta and welcoming guests on his behalf, Shah said, “In the 76-year-long journey of our Constitution, we ensured that democracy developed deep roots in India. We have strengthened our multi-party democratic parliamentary system. From 1947 till today, Parliament and assemblies, state boundaries have been changed without any bloodshed.””Constitution and judiciary have immensely contributed in strengthening democracy in India. The country has immense faith in judiciary, and citizenry is assured that Constitution and judiciary will protect and come to his rescue if he faced injustice. These three – Constitution, Parliament and Judiciary – are the edifice of our strong democracy,” Shah said while addressing an audience which comprised judges of the Supreme Court and high courts as well as the Royal Court of Bhutan.Commenting on the books that encapsulated events involving judges and courtroom incidents in foreign countries to highlight that courts are not bereft of honour, eccentricity and sarcasm, despite its inherent ‘black and white’ appearance, Shah took advantage of the presence of CJI Surya Kant, former CJI N V Ramana, sitting SC and HC judges and senior advocates to indulge in joyous sarcasm. “I would have appreciated his courage if he had written a book on Indian judiciary on the lines of the two books. Whether my comments are a reflection on the courts or on Tushar Mehta, I leave it to the judgment of the audience,” he said, adding he would speak his mind about the Indian judiciary sooner than later at an appropriate forum.Shah said that by and large, as a society, “we have excelled at the dispensation of justice… It is our responsibility that loopholes in the system are addressed by the executive and the judiciary and bring a road map to ensure it is not repeated in future”.CJI Surya Kant enthralled the audience by quoting humorous incidents from Indian courts and said these could encourage Mehta to pen his third book, which should be on Indian judiciary that is replete with similar incidents he had quoted from foreign jurisdictions.Attorney general R Venkataraman enacted a sterling courtroom scene by presenting a counter-affidavit to Mehta’s books.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos‘Use Petrol Sparingly’: PM Modi Calls For WFH, Carpooling Amid West Asia WarFormer Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s Anti-BJP Unity Call Rejected By Left, Congress In Bengal TwistWill Vijay Join INDIA Bloc? ‘Secular’ Speech Sparks Fresh Political Speculation | WatchSuspended TMC Leader Riju Dutta Praises Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari For Preventing Post-Poll ViolenceIndia Tests Advanced Agni-5 MIRV Missile With 5,000 KM Range, Multiple Warhead Capability | WatchPM Modi Urges Indians To Save Fuel As West Asia War Triggers Massive Oil CrisisBJP Bengal Chief Samik Bhattacharya Launches Sharp Attack On TMC Amid I-PAC ControversyVijay Faces Political Storm After Vande Mataram Played Before Tamil Thaai VaazhthuSecurity Scare In Bengaluru Ahead Of PM Modi Visit After Explosives Recovery | WatchSatheesan-Venugopal Face-Off Delays Congress Decision On Kerala Chief Minister123PhotostoriesUS turns 250: Where to witness best celebrations across South America in 2026Mother’s Day special: The everyday superfoods that help moms stay energised, strong, and healthy through life’s endless demandsGestational Diabetes may end after pregnancy, but its hidden impact on thyroid health could last for yearsPoet Kumar Vishwas’ lavish Noida bungalow is a five-floor, crores-worth property defined by private salon, lifts and artistic interiorsYour mum said it first! 5 health tips now backed by scienceIs fibremaxxing healthy? NEW DELHI: BJP’s super-majority win in a string of assembly polls, capped by its maiden victory in West Bengal with over two-thirds seats, and its rising number in Rajya Sabha will all but allow the party to dictate terms in next year’s presidential election, after its loss of majority in Lok Sabha polls had raised doubts over its dominant run since 2014.Its overwhelming domination of assemblies with allies in big states, like Maharashtra, Bengal and Bihar – three assemblies with maximum weight among states after UP in the electoral college for president – will be effective in neutralising the loss it has suffered in LS where its tally fell from 303 to 240 in 2024. All elected members of Parliament and assemblies, which leave out nominated lawmakers, make up the electoral college. Parliament and assemblies have equal voting share, but while the vote of every MP has the same value (it was 700 in 2022), the weight of an MLA’s vote varies depending on the size of population (as per 1971 census) his assembly represents.A UP MLA’s vote at the value of 208 was almost 30 times that of a Sikkim MLA’s, with the value of 7 in 2022. The figure is likely to remain more or less the same next year as the census figure is a constant and so is the strength of an assembly, barring vacancies. The existence of J&K assembly, which was dissolved in 2018 and was not part of the last presidential election, will be a factor, though marginal. The fall in its LS tally dented BJP’s votes by 44,100 in the electoral college, which had a total strength of 10,86,431 in 2022. A poor run in assembly polls could have compromised its authority to dictate the terms, even with allies, as has been the case with previous govts when the principal party, be BJP or Congress, was short of majority. After the LS poll, when BJP depended on TDP and JD(U) to cross the 272 mark for majority, the opposition was quick to dub the two regional parties as its “crutches” for survival and predicted that govt will fall soon, claiming that the result will prove to be inflection point in its strong run since 2014 and assembly polls will bring grimmer tidings.Over two years down the line, BJP is sitting pretty. UP holds key in Prez polls with over 83,800 vote weight of MLAsAll elected members of the Parliament and assemblies which leave out nominated lawmakers make up the electoral college. It won Haryana comprehensively against odds and NDA’s strength in the 288-member Maharashtra assembly has zoomed to 237 from over 150 during the last presidential polls and surged to 202 from 125 in 243-member Bihar assembly. It won Haryana comprehensively against odds and NDA’s strength in the 288-member Maharashtra assembly has zoomed to 237 from over 150 during the last presidential polls and surged to 202 from 125 in 243-member Bihar assembly. NEW DELHI: India and UAE are working on an agreement that will help in evacuation of lakhs of Indian workers through the port of Fujairah, and it is likely to be signed during the stopover added to PM Modi’s itinerary, signalling another crucial link to the already strong bilateral ties. The PM is due to leave for Europe on May 15 with a stopover in Fujairah and then depart for the Netherlands, before visiting Sweden, Norway and Italy. The first-of-its-kind treaty comes amid disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict, which saw thousands stranded in the Gulf amid flights getting affected. While life is slowly returning to normal, the pact can be useful in future as Fujairah is west of the Strait of Hormuz, which has emerged as the main chokepoint in the war.In case of problems with air traffic, lakhs of Indians working in the UAE can be evacuated by ship, according to govt’s calculations. West Asia is home to nearly 10 million Indian workers, with nearly 4.3 million in the UAE.In the current conflict, Fujairah, which was the likely starting point of the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, also serves as an alternative for shipping goods to the UAE as access to the Dubai port has been cut off. Khor Fakkar is the other port that is being used to ship goods, which are then moved by road. Iran has targeted Fujairah for precisely the same reason. The PM’s visit signals India’s support for the UAE, which has been under attack from Iran.It also comes amid the UAE’s exit from OPEC, the powerful oil cartel, due to its perceived differences with Saudi Arabia. Given India’s close ties with the UAE in recent years, experts are expecting the country to be a major gainer, especially as countries such as Saudi Arabia charges an Asian premium on crude sold by it. Strait talk: Iran sends reply to US peace plan Iran submitted its response to the latest US proposal to end 10 weeks of war as a series of incidents continues to threaten a shaky ceasefire. The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported on the latest response without giving any further details, and Tehran hasn’t yet given any public indication it would accept Trump’s plan. Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that Iran has conveyed its response to a US proposal.Trump proposed that Iran permit passage via the Strait of Hormuz and Washington end its blockade on Iranian ports in the next month. The two sides would still need to negotiate later a deal over Iran’s nuclear programme.Trump: US would need two weeks to hit all Iran targetsUS President Donald Trump has said in an interview aired Sunday it would only take two weeks to hit “every single target” in Iran, adding that the Islamic republic was “militarily defeated.” In the interview with independent journalist Sharyl Attkisson, recorded last week, he also called Nato a “paper tiger” and accused Washington’s allies of failing to assist in the campaign against Tehran.Trump on Sunday accused Iran of “playing games” and laughing at America for decades, but said it soon would be made to stop.Iran warns France, UK of ‘immediate response’ Iran warned Britain and France on Sunday that its armed forces would launch “a decisive and immediate response” to any warships being sent to the Strait of Hormuz, after Paris and London dispatched vessels to the region. “We remind them that both in times of war and in times of peace, only Iran can establish security in this strait,” deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi posted on X.UAE & Kuwait report intercepting dronesDespite the ceasefire in place since April 8, a drone strike on Sunday briefly set a cargo vessel ablaze off Qatar in the Persian Gulf, marking the latest shipping attack. The UAE and Kuwait, both of which have come under attack from Iran in the past two months, said Sunday they had intercepted hostile drones.
