JAMMU: Chief of Army Staff, General Dhiraj Seth, visited forward areas along the Line of Control in J&K’s Rajouri-Poonch belt Thursday to review the region’s security situation, counter-infiltration grid, operational preparedness of formations under the corps, and combat readiness of troops.Seth’s first visit to the twin frontier districts after assuming office came amid heightened security measures in the belt for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.The CoAS visited Nagrota-based White Knight Corps HQ, where senior commanders briefed him on the current security dynamics, operational deployments and surveillance architecture in the region. Gen Seth interacted with troops deployed at forward posts and boosted their morale, officials said. The Northern Army Commander, 16 Corps Commander, and GOC 25 Division accompanied him.Gen Seth later visited forward locations in Poonch district and reviewed the evolving security environment. He met senior military officials at Poonch Brigade HQ, where he was briefed on troop deployment, integrated operational readiness, and the prevailing security scenario, a defence spokesperson said.

Among the major takeaways was also the long-pending operationalisation of the 2014 India-Australia Civil Nuclear Agreement for uranium supply to India. “Today, we signed a significant agreement in the field of nuclear energy. This will pave the way for the supply of uranium from Australia to India and give fresh momentum to our clean energy objectives,” said the PM, who described India and Australia at a business event earlier as natural and trusted partners in times of global uncertainties.While reiterating support for India’s Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) membership bid, a joint statement said the agreement will enable long-term Australian uranium exports to India for exclusively peaceful purposes and under IAEA safeguards. India and Australia had concluded fuel supply arrangements as early as in 2015 but it was yet to be operationalised because of a lack of agreement on the issue of safeguards. Calling the agreement a shot in the arm for India’s clean energy goals, foreign secretary Vikram Misri said it was important to have reporting procedures and protocols that would satisfy both sides about the supply, handling and accounting of material. “As a result of very intense discussions over a period of almost 2 years, both sides were able to conclude these issues to their mutual satisfaction,” said Misri. Government officials had said last week they were expecting the discussion to conclude during the visit. Modi welcomed the opening of Australian university campuses in India saying it had added a new chapter to the knowledge partnership and that both sides will work to enhance the exchange of students, professionals, and tourists between the two countries. Amid concerns over the reported delay in processing of student visas, Albanese stressed in the meeting Indian students in Australia are welcomed and valued members of Australian classrooms, campuses and communities. “India and Australia are vibrant democracies, multicultural societies and 2 significant ocean powers. These shared characteristics and our common worldview inspire us to move forward continuously with deep mutual trust,” said Modi in his statement. Misri later said there was an assurance from Australia that there would be no reduction of opportunities for genuine Indian students. The leaders also called for urgent reform of the UNSC – with Australia reiterating its support for India’s candidacy for a permanent seat in the Council – and unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Condemning the “horrific attacks” perpetrated at Pahalgam and Bondi Beach, the leaders in the joint statement emphasised the importance of all countries combatting the threat of terrorism in a comprehensive and sustained manner, and called for action against globally proscribed terrorists and terror entities, including those listed by the United Nations Security Council 1267 Sanctions Committee. Narendra Modi and Anthony Albanese In a major boost to India-Australia space collaboration, Australian PM Anthony Albanese Thursday, during a joint statement with PM Narendra Modi, announced establishment of a temporary space tracking infrastructure in Australia to actively support India’s maiden human spaceflight programme ‘Gaganyaan’.“As we expand our cooperation in space and technology, we have agreed to commission a temporary space tracking terminal on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, which will support India’s landmark Gaganyaan Human Space Flight Programme,” Albanese said. The facility will ensure continuous communication with Isro’s crew module during its initial uncrewed test flights and subsequent crewed missions when it will orbit Earth.During the “Melbourne Meets Modi” event, Modi said, “You have also seen that India successfully landed Chandrayaan on Moon’s south pole. No other country has achieved this. But India was not satisfied with only this achievement. Because India believes – ‘Grow More, Achieve More’. That is why India is now preparing to send its Gaganyaan mission into space. Tihar food ‘too spicy, oily, deep-fried’: US mercenary seeks chicken, fish, olive oil in court plea (Image/X) NEW DELHI: US national Matthew Aaron VanDyke, who was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) earlier this year in the Myanmar terror training case, has moved a Delhi court seeking permission to prepare his own food in Tihar Jail, saying he is not accustomed to the meals served there.In his application, VanDyke told the court that the food provided in jail is ‘oily and spicy’, which has caused health problems and led to a deterioration in his physical condition. He also sought permission to be provided with food items so that he can cook his own meals.The plea came up for hearing before Additional Sessions Judge Prashant Sharma of the Patiala House Court on Thursday. The court granted time to the jail authorities to file their reply after issuing notice to them and the NIA. The matter has now been listed for hearing on July 21.VanDyke is currently lodged in Tihar Jail after being arrested by the NIA. His judicial custody has been extended till August 1.Represented by advocates Rohit Dandriyal and Rohit Gour, VanDyke claimed that he has not eaten the food served in jail since May 6 and has lost around 14 kilograms.According to the application, he is a US citizen who is not accustomed to the diet generally served in Indian prisons, which he described as predominantly spicy, oily, deep-fried and greasy.The plea stated that regular consumption of such food has caused severe physical discomfort and adversely affected his health. It claimed that despite wanting to maintain proper nutrition, he has been unable to eat the prison meals, resulting in what the application described as a continuing hunger strike.The application further alleged that his prolonged inability to consume the food provided in jail has led to a serious decline in his health. It said he has developed vision-related problems due to poor nutrition, suffered a significant loss of strength and stamina, and experienced weakened immunity, making him more vulnerable to infections.VanDyke has requested permission to use cooking items including an induction stove, pots, bowls and a plastic chopper. He has also sought access to food items such as lentils, chicken, red meat, fish, uncooked noodles and pasta, rice, potatoes, onions, beans, bread, butter, olive oil, toned milk, soya milk, bottled water and vegetables. He also requested lemon pepper seasoning. The application said his family is willing to bear the cost of these items.VanDyke was arrested by the NIA in March along with six Ukrainian nationals in connection with the alleged Myanmar terror training case.The agency has accused the group of illegally crossing into Myanmar and providing drone warfare and combat training to armed groups. The accused have been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and the investigation is continuing.VanDyke is a US national known as a documentary filmmaker, former journalist and founder of the organisation Sons of Liberty International (SOLI), which has provided military training in conflict zones. He gained international attention after fighting alongside rebels during the 2011 Libyan civil war and has since been associated with several conflict regions, including Syria and Ukraine. Tihar food ‘too spicy, oily, deep-fried’: US mercenary seeks chicken, fish, olive oil in court plea (Image/X) NEW DELHI: US national Matthew Aaron VanDyke, who was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) earlier this year in the Myanmar terror training case, has moved a Delhi court seeking permission to prepare his own food in Tihar Jail, saying he is not accustomed to the meals served there.In his application, VanDyke told the court that the food provided in jail is ‘oily and spicy’, which has caused health problems and led to a deterioration in his physical condition. He also sought permission to be provided with food items so that he can cook his own meals.The plea came up for hearing before Additional Sessions Judge Prashant Sharma of the Patiala House Court on Thursday. The court granted time to the jail authorities to file their reply after issuing notice to them and the NIA. The matter has now been listed for hearing on July 21.VanDyke is currently lodged in Tihar Jail after being arrested by the NIA. His judicial custody has been extended till August 1.Represented by advocates Rohit Dandriyal and Rohit Gour, VanDyke claimed that he has not eaten the food served in jail since May 6 and has lost around 14 kilograms.According to the application, he is a US citizen who is not accustomed to the diet generally served in Indian prisons, which he described as predominantly spicy, oily, deep-fried and greasy.The plea stated that regular consumption of such food has caused severe physical discomfort and adversely affected his health. It claimed that despite wanting to maintain proper nutrition, he has been unable to eat the prison meals, resulting in what the application described as a continuing hunger strike.The application further alleged that his prolonged inability to consume the food provided in jail has led to a serious decline in his health. It said he has developed vision-related problems due to poor nutrition, suffered a significant loss of strength and stamina, and experienced weakened immunity, making him more vulnerable to infections.VanDyke has requested permission to use cooking items including an induction stove, pots, bowls and a plastic chopper. He has also sought access to food items such as lentils, chicken, red meat, fish, uncooked noodles and pasta, rice, potatoes, onions, beans, bread, butter, olive oil, toned milk, soya milk, bottled water and vegetables. He also requested lemon pepper seasoning. The application said his family is willing to bear the cost of these items.VanDyke was arrested by the NIA in March along with six Ukrainian nationals in connection with the alleged Myanmar terror training case.The agency has accused the group of illegally crossing into Myanmar and providing drone warfare and combat training to armed groups. The accused have been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and the investigation is continuing.VanDyke is a US national known as a documentary filmmaker, former journalist and founder of the organisation Sons of Liberty International (SOLI), which has provided military training in conflict zones. He gained international attention after fighting alongside rebels during the 2011 Libyan civil war and has since been associated with several conflict regions, including Syria and Ukraine.
