NEW DELHI: For men, type 2 diabetes more often sets the stage for heart and kidney disease; for women, the greater threat appears to be mental health problems, a new study tracking nearly 29,000 patients has found.The study, published in PLOS Medicine, followed 28,720 people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2010 and 2020 using linked primary and secondary healthcare records in the UK. Researchers used a multi-state analysis to track the order and timing of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, end-stage renal disease and mental health conditions over a median follow-up of 6.8 years. Women were more likely than men to be diagnosed with a mental health condition.Women were more likely than men to be diagnosed with a mental health condition, including anxiety, depression or somatoform disorders, after developing diabetes. The study also found that women with diabetes may have a higher risk of problems related to memory, thinking and mental health.However, he cautioned that these problems may not be caused by diabetes alone, as cognitive and neuropsychiatric problems are generally more common in women. He said doctors should, therefore, watch for these issues while managing diabetes.Hypertension was the most common complication after type-2 diabetes across all age groups and in both sexes. It affected 21.1% of men and 20.2% of women. Men also experienced most complications earlier than women, while women generally had a later onset of events.The study linked diabetes, mental health and mortality, finding that people who developed a mental health condition after diabetes died earlier. Among those with the same disease trajectory, men died on average nine years younger than women.Despite this, women had higher average healthcare utilisation and long-term prescribing than men. “PM Modi’s call will raise awareness among youth against drug abuse”: Uttarakhand CM Dhami tunes into 137th edition of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami tuned into the 137th broadcast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program in Kunwa Wala on Sunday, praising the monthly address as a powerful catalyst for grassroots nation-building.After the programme, the Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has emerged as an effective platform for inspiring citizens to actively participate in nation-building and for bringing the country and the world the stories of people and innovative initiatives driving positive change in society.The Chief Minister said that the Prime Minister, through ‘Mann Ki Baat’, had urged the youth to stay away from drugs and turn the resolve of a ‘Drug-Free Youth, Developed India’ into a mass movement.A drug-free youth population, he said, is the strong foundation of a powerful and developed India. The Prime Minister’s call will further raise awareness among young people against drug abuse and provide new momentum to building a healthy, positive and nation-building-oriented youth force.He further noted that the Prime Minister also highlighted innovative efforts being made to present India’s glorious history and rich heritage to the younger generation in an engaging and simple manner. “Lucknow has BrahMos, smart roads and clean Gomti river”: CM Yogi highlights city’s transformation LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday highlighted Lucknow’s transformation into a city combining modern infrastructure and defence technologies with its cultural heritage, saying the state government is working to fully clean the Gomti River by the end of this year.Addressing an event in Lucknow, CM Yogi Adityanath said, “There are narrow lanes, but Lucknow also has smart roads and roads developed under the CM Grid scheme. Alongside the narrow streets, Lucknow has also received an outer ring road, similar to the Kisan Path. If Lucknow has the heritage of Uda Devi Pasi and Maharaja Bijli Pasi, it has also emerged as a centre for modern defence technologies such as BrahMos missiles, contributing to India’s defence needs and self-reliance.”The Chief Minister further said, “While the city is known for the exquisite Chikan embroidery craft of its traditional artisans, UNESCO has recently elevated its stature by recognising its cuisine and designating Lucknow as a “Heritage City of Gastronomy.” All of this has been made possible, realising the dreams of the revered Atal ji, under the guidance and inspiring leadership of Lucknow’s popular MP and the nation’s distinguished Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh…We are on track to fully clean the Gomti River by the end of this year. I extend my gratitude to the Central Command for its full cooperation with the state government in ensuring the river’s cleanliness and maintaining its continuous, pristine flow.
