NFL Trade Rumor: San Francisco 49ers could trade Brandon Aiyuk to Washington Commanders and avoid Baker Mayfield situation
If any team is interested in acquiring San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, the Niners general manager John Lynch is waiting for their call.Lynch calls Aiyuk’s being traded to another NFL team “a prudent thing to do.” Synonym for: taking a wise, practical decision to avoid future consequences or unnecessary risks.
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk could land with Washington Commanders to avoid Baker Mayfield scenario
John Lynch praised Brandon Aiyuk, saying, “He’s an extremely talented player. He’s been an extremely effective player in our league.”And the contract dispute that led to no communication from Aiyuk in 2025, Lynch called it, “situation didn’t work itself out here.”But Lynch reassured, “that’s not to say that it can’t be rekindled somewhere else.” And if an opportunity presents itself, the Niners franchise will be happy to talk a deal with any other team. The thing is, other teams could be concerned about Brandon Aiyuk’s lack of communication skills. NFL insider Daniel Jeremiah spoke to a lot of people around the league, but Brandon Aiyuk’s name did not pop up.
Brandon Aiyuk is not a bad teammate
Former San Francisco 49ers executive Ran Carthon said via 106.7 The Fan, “One thing you don’t have to worry about with [Brandon] Aiyuk is he’s gonna work because he’s a natural worker. He’s quiet by nature, and by no means is he a bad person or a bad teammate. I don’t think you can find anybody that’ll say that. I just think Brandon is the type of guy that has principles, he has beliefs, and he has things that’s willing to stand on, and probably to a fault sometimes.”
Crowded San Francisco wide receiver room
The San Francisco 49ers drafted a wide receiver in the 2026 NFL Draft [Ole Miss Rebels wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling as their second-round, 33rd overall pick].And they already have a crowded room full of veteran Mike Evans [signed from Tampa Bay Buccaneers], 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall. They also have Jordan Watkins [2025 fourth-round pick] and Christian Kirk [signed from the Houston Texans].Now there is no room for Brandon Aiyuk there. And so, the 28-year-old wide receiver may as well be traded to the Washington Commanders, who are in need of a wide receiver.
Brandon Aiyuk held hostage like Baker Mayfield in Cleveland Browns
Commanders Report by Chat Sports analyst Jack Sperry suggests that the Washington Commanders sign Brandon Aiyuk now. Because the San Francisco 49ers are holding Brandon Aiyuk hostage. And the longer he stays with them, the less time he gets to learn the Washington Commanders’ style of playing. The less he learns, the worse season he suffers. Just like Baker Mayfield. Back when the Cleveland Browns drafted Baker Mayfield, they had him all through his rookie contract.Baker Mayfield gave the Cleveland Browns their first playoff appearance since 2002 and their first postseason victory since the 1994-95 season. Mayfield meant so much to them, but in the 2022 offseason, the Cleveland Browns signed Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. This caused unsettling news for Baker Mayfield, whose QB1 spot was in danger. After Deshaun Watson was signed to a long-term contract, Baker Mayfield requested a trade. Throughout the offseason, pre-draft, post-draft, rookie minicamp, OTAs, and mandatory minicamp, right up to training camp, the Cleveland Browns reportedly held Baker Mayfield hostage. Then, in July 2022, just before the training camp, Baker Mayfield was traded to the Carolina Panthers. He could not prepare much and ended up competing with Sam Darnold for the starting position.
Baker Mayfield suffered with Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams
Baker Mayfield recorded 1 win and 5 losses with the Carolina Panthers. He requested his release and the Los Angeles Rams signed him. Matthew Stafford had sustained a spinal injury then. So, Baker Mayfield was needed there. But there, too, Mayfield recorded 1 win and 3 losses as a starter. His 2022 season was without preparation, and he suffered tremendously playing with two teams. In 2023, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Baker Mayfield to a one-year contract, and the rest is history.
Now is the time to trade Brandon Aiyuk to Washington Commanders
What Chat Sports analyst means to say is that the San Francisco 49ers could trade Brandon Aiyuk to the Washington Commanders now, when the time is right. When can he prepare for the 2026 season. Because he hasn’t already played the entire 2025 season, he needs to be acclimated to the gridiron. Also, Jayden Daniels is all in on the plan [they were college teammates at Arizona State University in 2019], as per Chat Sports host. So, would the San Francisco 49ers release/trade Brandon Aiyuk and avoid a Baker Mayfield-like situation? Only time will tell…
