NEW DELHI: The Centre on Friday showcased new AI-based systems that can help detect fake hospital bills, forged medical papers and fraud under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme.The tools were presented during the AB PM-JAY Auto-Adjudication Hackathon Showcase 2026 organised by the Union health ministry, National Health Authority (NHA), IndiaAI Mission and IISc Bengaluru.Officials said the AI systems are aimed at reducing fraud, speeding up insurance claim settlements and improving transparency under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY.The showcased technologies included multilingual OCR systems that can scan and classify medical documents, extract data from low-quality records and verify compliance with standard treatment guidelines.Another set of AI tools demonstrated the ability to analyse X-rays, CT scans and MRIs to help verify diagnoses and treatment claims submitted by hospitals.Teams also presented AI models capable of identifying forged discharge summaries, manipulated billing records, ghost beneficiaries and deepfake-generated medical documents used in fraudulent claims.NHA CEO Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal said India was among the first countries in the Global South to develop a health AI benchmarking platform using India-specific datasets.Officials said the initiative aims to build a faster and more transparent digital claims system while reducing manual workload in the government’s flagship health insurance programme.About the AuthorAnuja JaiswalAnuja Jaiswal is a Senior Assistant Editor at The Times of India, with an impressive 18-year career in narrative journalism. He had stated that he was extending support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam with the approval of AMMK General Secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran,” the party said.TVK further alleged that false information was now being circulated to discredit the development. “However, the information now being spread that he did not write the letter is completely false and contrary to the truth. It is essential for everyone to clearly understand this. Concealing all these facts, T.T.V. NEW DELHI: The rare hantavirus outbreak reported aboard a cruise ship carrying two Indian crew members has triggered international attention, but Indian health experts and government agencies say there is no immediate concern for the country as sporadic hantavirus cases and evidence of exposure have been reported in India earlier as well.According to information shared through International Health Regulations channels, two Indian nationals onboard the vessel are currently asymptomatic and under observation.The World Health Organization has also said the overall public-health risk remains low and there is no cause for panic.The Dutch-flagged expedition vessel MV Hondius reported eight suspected and confirmed infections linked to the Andes strain of hantavirus, including three deaths, while travelling from South America towards Africa.Experts said the outbreak has drawn attention mainly because the Andes strain is the only known hantavirus variant associated with limited human-to-human transmission. However, unlike Covid-19, the infection does not spread easily and generally requires prolonged close exposure.“Hantavirus is a rodent-borne viral infection that can affect the lungs and kidneys. In severe lung involvement, known as cardiopulmonary hantavirus disease, mortality can reach 30-50%. However, unlike Covid-19, it is not highly contagious and is mainly transmitted through contact with infected rodent saliva, urine or droppings,” said Dr G.C. Khilnani, Chairman, PSRI Institute of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine.He said India has so far seen only sporadic cases and there is no immediate public-health threat. Dr Khilnani advised people to keep homes rodent-free and use wet cleaning instead of dry sweeping in contaminated areas because infected particles can become airborne during cleaning.Medical literature from India has documented rare hantavirus infections earlier too. A case report published in the Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine described Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome in a Mumbai woman shortly after childbirth. Doctors had initially suspected dengue or leptospirosis because the symptoms overlapped before hantavirus antibodies were later detected.Dr N.K. Ganguly, Chairperson, Department of Biotechnology and Research at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said the Andes strain had earlier been linked to outbreaks in Argentina and may initially resemble a Covid-like respiratory illness.“Patients may first develop fever, body ache, malaise and mild respiratory symptoms before some rapidly deteriorate and require intensive care,” he said.Dr Ganguly added that India’s healthcare system is now better prepared after Covid-19, with advanced hospitals capable of detecting hantavirus through respiratory virus testing panels. Suspected patients would be isolated and managed under respiratory infection protocols, though no proven antiviral treatment currently exists.A senior health ministry official said WHO is coordinating international response measures under the International Health Regulations mechanism, including diagnostic support, epidemiological assessment, and arrangements for safe disembarkation of passengers and crew.The Public Health Emergency Operations Centre under IDSP-NCDC has also held a high-level review meeting to assess the situation and preparedness measures. NEW DELHI: The rare hantavirus outbreak reported aboard a cruise ship carrying two Indian crew members has triggered international attention, but Indian health experts and government agencies say there is no immediate concern for the country as sporadic hantavirus cases and evidence of exposure have been reported in India earlier as well.According to information shared through International Health Regulations channels, two Indian nationals onboard the vessel are currently asymptomatic and under observation.The World Health Organization has also said the overall public-health risk remains low and there is no cause for panic.The Dutch-flagged expedition vessel MV Hondius reported eight suspected and confirmed infections linked to the Andes strain of hantavirus, including three deaths, while travelling from South America towards Africa.Experts said the outbreak has drawn attention mainly because the Andes strain is the only known hantavirus variant associated with limited human-to-human transmission. However, unlike Covid-19, the infection does not spread easily and generally requires prolonged close exposure.“Hantavirus is a rodent-borne viral infection that can affect the lungs and kidneys. In severe lung involvement, known as cardiopulmonary hantavirus disease, mortality can reach 30-50%. However, unlike Covid-19, it is not highly contagious and is mainly transmitted through contact with infected rodent saliva, urine or droppings,” said Dr G.C. Khilnani, Chairman, PSRI Institute of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine.He said India has so far seen only sporadic cases and there is no immediate public-health threat. Dr Khilnani advised people to keep homes rodent-free and use wet cleaning instead of dry sweeping in contaminated areas because infected particles can become airborne during cleaning.Medical literature from India has documented rare hantavirus infections earlier too. A case report published in the Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine described Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome in a Mumbai woman shortly after childbirth. Doctors had initially suspected dengue or leptospirosis because the symptoms overlapped before hantavirus antibodies were later detected.Dr N.K. Ganguly, Chairperson, Department of Biotechnology and Research at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said the Andes strain had earlier been linked to outbreaks in Argentina and may initially resemble a Covid-like respiratory illness.“Patients may first develop fever, body ache, malaise and mild respiratory symptoms before some rapidly deteriorate and require intensive care,” he said.Dr Ganguly added that India’s healthcare system is now better prepared after Covid-19, with advanced hospitals capable of detecting hantavirus through respiratory virus testing panels. Suspected patients would be isolated and managed under respiratory infection protocols, though no proven antiviral treatment currently exists.A senior health ministry official said WHO is coordinating international response measures under the International Health Regulations mechanism, including diagnostic support, epidemiological assessment, and arrangements for safe disembarkation of passengers and crew.The Public Health Emergency Operations Centre under IDSP-NCDC has also held a high-level review meeting to assess the situation and preparedness measures. KOLKATA: Writers’ Buildings and several other Bengal govt offices in Kolkata will turn orange after dusk on Saturday to mark the inaugural day of the first-ever BJP govt.The illumination trials were held Friday evening.Sources said the Greco-Roman facade of the Writers’, which will once again serve as the state secretariat after its restoration and renovation is completed, would be decked with thousands of orange rice bulbs. Several other buildings, including the Assembly House, Kolkata Collectorate and Akashvani Bhavan, will be similarly decked with orange hues from around 5.30 pm.Many state govt buildings received a blue-and-white makeover after Mamata Banerjee assumed office in 2011, but a few heritage buildings like Writers’, the state secretariat till 2013, and the Kolkata Collectorate retained the red and off-white shade.Inside the Writers’ Buildings, where the new CM Suvendu Adhikari is expected to step in around afternoon after taking oath at Brigade Parade Ground followed by a trip to the Raj Bhavan to complete formalities, work was underway at a furious pace to complete a makeshift Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) for the symbolic visit. NEW DELHI: Centre on Saturday appointed Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani (Retd.) as the country’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), according to an official announcement issued on Friday.The government said Lt Gen Raja Subramani, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM (Retd.), will also serve as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs from the date he assumes charge until further orders.The current CDS, General Anil Chauhan, is set to complete his tenure on May 30, 2026.Lt Gen Raja Subramani has been serving as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat since September 1, 2025. Before that, he served as Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025.
