NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday became the first world leader and politician to cross 100 million followers on Instagram, marking a new milestone in his global digital presence.PM Modi, who joined the Meta-owned platform in 2014, now has more than twice the followers of US President Donald Trump, who stands second with 43.2 million followers. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto follows with 15 million, while Brazil’s president has 14.4 million. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has 11.6 million followers and Argentine President Javier Milei has 6.4 million. The combined follower count of these five leaders remains below Modi’s individual tally. Within India, the gap between Modi and other political leaders is also wide. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has 16.1 million followers, while Congress MP and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has around 12.6 million.Separately, surveys show PM Modi leading global approval ratings among selected world leaders. As of December 2025, PM Modi held a 70 per cent approval rating, according to Statista, placing him at the top of the list. CBI, Sunetra Pawar’s brother Padamsinh Patil (File photo) NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will appeal against the acquittal of all accused in the 2006 Pawanraje Nimbalkar double murder case before the Bombay high court, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde said on Saturday, hours after a special CBI court cleared nine accused, including former NCP leader Padamsinh Patil.The acquittal came nearly two decades after Congress leader Pawanraje Nimbalkar and his driver Samad Kazi were shot dead in Navi Mumbai in June 2006. Amit Shah ji has stated that the CBI will appeal this decision in the High Court and contest the case. The Union Home Minister has issued these instructions to the CBI,” Shinde said.Expressing disappointment over the verdict, Shinde said the family had expected the accused to be convicted.”This is a very unfortunate incident; it is a very tragic event because Pawanraje Nimbalkar ji and two others were murdered in broad daylight. This was a very serious and grave matter. The family and many others believed that the accused would be punished. However, unfortunately, the CBI court has acquitted them,” he said.The special CBI court acquitted all nine accused, including Padamsinh Patil, brother of Maharashtra deputy chief minister Sunetra Pawar and a former state minister. Patil had been accused of masterminding the killing of his cousin, Pawanraje Nimbalkar, allegedly over political and business rivalry.Special Judge SR Navandar based the acquittal largely on the failure of the prosecution’s key witness, accused-turned-approver Parasmal Jain. According to court observations reported by TOI, the judge discarded Jain’s testimony, describing him as unreliable and noting inconsistencies in his statements throughout the trial.The court observed that 127 witnesses had deposed before Jain became the 128th witness after turning approver and receiving a pardon. However, the judge found several aspects of his testimony doubtful, including his claims regarding the planning and execution of the murder.The court also held that the prosecution failed to conclusively establish that the vehicle seized during the investigation was the same one used in the crime. It further noted there was no evidence to support the claim that Jain had contacted Nimbalkar from a public call office before the murder under the pretext of a land deal.The CBI had argued that Nimbalkar’s murder was the result of long-standing political rivalry with Patil. The prosecution alleged that the conflict stemmed from disputes over the management of the Terna Sugar Factory and Nimbalkar’s decision to contest against Patil in the 2004 Maharashtra Assembly elections.Nimbalkar was shot dead on June 3, 2006, while travelling on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. His driver, Samad Kazi, was also killed in the attack.The investigation was transferred to the CBI in 2008 after the Bombay high court, acting on a petition filed by Nimbalkar’s wife Anandibai Nimbalkar, criticised the state police probe as “desultory and lackadaisical”. The trial was later shifted following allegations that Patil was exerting influence over the proceedings.The approver had alleged that he was recruited by two associates of Patil to coordinate the contract killing and had provided details about the recruitment of shooters from Uttar Pradesh, the purchase of a vehicle under an assumed identity and surveillance of Nimbalkar before the attack.The verdict also carries political significance because Pawanraje Nimbalkar was the father of Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Omprakash Rajenimbalkar, who was present in court along with family members when the judgment was delivered.The case has remained a focal point in Maharashtra politics for nearly 20 years, intertwining allegations of political rivalry, influence and a prolonged legal battle. Guru Ghasidas Central University (Image courtesy: ggu.ac.in) NEW DELHI: Guru Ghasidas Central University in Chhattisgarh, a central university, will now use “Bharat” instead of “India” on its marksheets and official communications, Vice Chancellor Alok Kumar Chakrawal said on Saturday.According to Chakrawal, the Bilaspur-based university’s standing committee passed a resolution on this about six months ago.“At present, university marksheets and degree certificates carry references to both India and Bharat in English and Hindi respectively. Under the new decision, India appearing in English will also be replaced with Bharat,” he told PTI.He added that the change will be implemented once the existing stock of marksheets and degree certificates is used up.Explaining the decision, the Vice Chancellor pointed to the use of “Bharat” during the G20 Summit held in India in 2023.“During the G20 meetings, the Honourable President used the word ‘Bharat’ in an official dinner invitation. When the highest constitutional authority in the country follows this tradition, we are also following it. It is a matter of our tradition,” Chakrawal noted.He also emphasised that the term “Bharat” has deep historical and cultural roots.“Historically, the region of Aryavarta and Jambudweep has been referred to as Bharat. The name India was given by foreigners for their convenience. We need not be guided by what outsiders thought. Our culture and tradition have always referred to the country as Bharat, and we are making an effort to reinforce that tradition,” he added.Meanwhile, officials from some state universities, including Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya in Raipur and Atal Bihari Vajpayee University in Bilaspur, clarified that no such decision has been taken by their institutes so far and no official guidelines have been issued.Get the latest India news and live updates. Pawan Khera takes a jab at PM Modi over his G7 meeting with Congress NEW DELHI: Congress leader Pawan Khera has on Saturday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi failed to raise key issues during his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the G7 summit, including the deaths of Indian sailors, the one-sided US trade deal, and the Operation Sindoor ceasefire claims made by Trump.Khera said PM Modi should learn from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on how to respond with confidence.”Narendra Modi does not want to learn from Indira Gandhi ji; at the very least, learn from Giorgia Meloni ji how to respond with eye-to-eye confidence,” he said.The deaths of Indian sailorsThree Indian sailors were killed when the US military struck the Palau-flagged oil tanker MT Settebello in the Gulf of Oman, accusing it of violating the US blockade on Iranian ports . The victims were identified as Aditya Sharma, a cadet, Shivanand Chaurashiya, a fitter, and Patnala Suresh, a chief engineer .India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned US Charge d’Affaires Jason Meeks and lodged a “strong protest” over the deaths . In a statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India conveyed its “deepest concerns about the ongoing incidents of attacks” on vessels with Indian crew.External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also raised the issue with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.Contrary to Khera’s statements, during the G7 meeting on June 17, PM Modi raised the issue directly, noting that hundreds of thousands of Indian nationals work on ships around the world. “Their safety is of utmost importance to us,” PM Modi said.However, Trump’s response was brief: “It’s a tough profession. There’s no question about it. And we work together on it”.The Bilateral Trade AgreementThe India-US trade relationship has been a source of tension, with the Trump administration imposing steep tariffs on Indian exports, partly over New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil . Talks on a broader bilateral trade agreement have been ongoing, with US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor saying in early June that 99 per cent of the proposed interim agreement had been finalised.Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said both sides had finalised most elements of the first phase, with negotiations focused on a few minor issues . A US trade delegation led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch was in New Delhi from June 2-4 for talks.During the G7 meeting, Trump said a new deal was “very close” and described Modi as a “tough” negotiator . However, Khera alleged that Modi did not push back on the one-sided nature of the deal . 16 drug combinations banned by Centre over safety concerns NEW DELHI: The Centre has banned 16 fixed-dose combination (FDC) medicines, including certain antibiotic, pain-relief and skin-treatment products, after expert panels found that they lacked therapeutic justification and were not supported by scientific evidence.The health ministry on Friday prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of these medicines with immediate effect under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.The action follows a Supreme Court-directed review of fixed-dose combinations sold in the country. As part of the exercise, the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) set up an expert committee to examine whether such drug combinations were scientifically justified and safe for patients.Based on the committee’s recommendations, the government concluded that 16 combinations were irrational and that their continued use was not considered beneficial in relation to the potential risks involved.The banned products include combinations containing antibiotics such as amoxicillin, cefuroxime and cefadroxyl, medicines used for pain relief and abdominal cramps, and several aloe vera-based dermatological preparations.Among the combinations prohibited are Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase, Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase + Lactobacillus Sporogenes, Cefuroxime + Serratiopeptidase, Cefadroxyl + Probenecid, Dicyclomine + Paracetamol + Clidinium Bromide + Chlordiazepoxide, and a number of aloe vera-based skin formulations.According to the ministry, expert committees found that the available scientific evidence did not support the use of these combinations. 16 drug combinations banned by Centre over safety concerns NEW DELHI: The Centre has banned 16 fixed-dose combination (FDC) medicines, including certain antibiotic, pain-relief and skin-treatment products, after expert panels found that they lacked therapeutic justification and were not supported by scientific evidence.The health ministry on Friday prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of these medicines with immediate effect under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.The action follows a Supreme Court-directed review of fixed-dose combinations sold in the country. As part of the exercise, the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) set up an expert committee to examine whether such drug combinations were scientifically justified and safe for patients.Based on the committee’s recommendations, the government concluded that 16 combinations were irrational and that their continued use was not considered beneficial in relation to the potential risks involved.The banned products include combinations containing antibiotics such as amoxicillin, cefuroxime and cefadroxyl, medicines used for pain relief and abdominal cramps, and several aloe vera-based dermatological preparations.Among the combinations prohibited are Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase, Amoxicillin + Serratiopeptidase + Lactobacillus Sporogenes, Cefuroxime + Serratiopeptidase, Cefadroxyl + Probenecid, Dicyclomine + Paracetamol + Clidinium Bromide + Chlordiazepoxide, and a number of aloe vera-based skin formulations.According to the ministry, expert committees found that the available scientific evidence did not support the use of these combinations.
