NEW DELHI: Days after being sworn in as Tamil Nadu chief minister, Vijay is set to face his first floor test in the assembly on Wednesday.His party, TVK, ended the decades-long DMK-AIADMK duopoly by emerging as the single-largest party in the 2026 assembly elections with 108 seats, but remained 11 short of the majority mark in the 234-member House.This pushed the actor-turned-politician to stitch together a post-poll alliance with Congress and several smaller parties. Shanmugam defended the decision, saying the AIADMK had to adapt to the new political reality after its poor electoral performance. He said the party should support TVK to revive what he described as “Amma rule,” referring to former chief minister J Jayalalithaa.The official AIADMK faction, however, issued a whip directing all 47 party MLAs to vote against the confidence motion. Senior leader Agri SS Krishnamurthy warned that violations of the whip would invite action under the anti-defection law.One more setback before the floor testAnother complication emerged after the Madras High Court restrained TVK MLA R Seenivasa Sethupathy from participating in the trust vote. Sethupathy had won the Tiruppattur seat by a margin of one vote, and his election was challenged by DMK’s KR Periakaruppan over alleged counting irregularities. The court’s interim order reduced TVK’s effective tally from 120 to 119 still one above the majority mark of 118. Sethupathy has since approached the Supreme Court, which is expected to hear the matter on Wednesday.A forgery row, tooMeanwhile, political controversy broke out over TVK’s claimed support from Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam MLA S Kamaraj. AMMK chief TTV Dhinakaran accused TVK of using a forged support letter and an AI-generated video to falsely project his MLA’s backing. TVK denied the allegation and released footage purportedly showing Kamaraj signing the support letter. LUCKNOW: Former Western army commander Lt Gen Manoj Katiyar on Tuesday said Pakistan’s military establishment continues to view proxy warfare as a low-cost strategic tool against India and is unlikely to abandon terrorism as an instrument of state policy despite repeated setbacks.Delivering an address on “Op Sindoor 2.0: Lessons, Strategy and Prognosis”, organised by Lucknow-based strategic think tank STRIVE India with the support of HQ Central Command, Lt Gen Katiyar said the Pakistan army sustains terrorism because it reinforces the military’s internal relevance and fuels its anti-India narrative.In May 2025, the Indian military carried out Op Sindoor, in which formations under the Western Command played a substantial role while Lt Gen Katiyar was serving as general officer commanding-in-chief. ANI file photo NEW DELHI: From conducting a life-saving midnight delivery on a remote Lakshadweep island to treating patients in the harsh high-altitude terrain of Ladakh, 15 nursing professionals from across the country were honoured with the National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026 by President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday.The awards were presented at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on International Nurses Day in the presence of Union health minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and minister of state for health Prataprao Jadhav.Among the awardees was Aysha Beebi K from Lakshadweep, recognised for conducting a critical midnight delivery on a remote island that saved both mother and child during an emergency.Ladakh-based Auxiliary Nurse Midwife Kulwinder Parhi was honoured for nearly three decades of service in difficult high-altitude regions, including treatment of civilians and troops under extreme weather conditions.Delhi nursing officer Dr Sharwan Kumar Dhaka was recognised for his role in Covid-19 vaccination outreach and public health services in underserved communities.Several awardees were recognised for healthcare delivery in remote tribal, island and high-altitude regions, including emergency care during cyclones, Covid outreach and difficult terrain operations.In her address, the President said nursing personnel exemplify the highest standards of service and play a crucial role in delivering quality healthcare, often under challenging conditions.The awardees included Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), registered nurses, nursing officers and educators from across the country, including Major General Lissamma P.V. from Army medical services, who was honoured for contributions to military healthcare.The National Florence Nightingale Award, instituted by the Union health ministry, recognises exceptional service, compassion and resilience in nursing. Each award carries a Certificate of Merit, a medal and a cash prize of ₹1 lakh.Marking International Nurses Day, Nadda said nurses are central to strengthening healthcare systems and improving community health outcomes. Referring to this year’s theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. NEW DELHI: Patients across the country may face disruption in routine medicine purchases on May 20 as more than 12.4 lakh chemists prepare for a nationwide shutdown against online medicine sales and deep discounting by e-pharmacy platforms.The All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) said the protest is aimed at highlighting risks to patient safety from unregulated online sale of medicines. The association alleged that medicines were being delivered without proper verification, enabling repeated use of prescriptions and easier access to antibiotics and habit-forming drugs. It warned that AI-generated fake prescriptions and uncontrolled medicine sales could fuel antimicrobial resistance (AMR).The body also opposed continuation of Covid-era relaxations under G.S.R. 220(E), alleging digital platforms were using temporary provisions to bypass safeguards under drug regulations. It demanded withdrawal of both G.S.R. 220(E) and G.S.R. 817(E), linked to e-pharmacy operations.Retail pharmacists said deep discounting by large online platforms was threatening the survival of neighbourhood chemists, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where local pharmacies remain the first point of healthcare access. The association claimed nearly five crore people dependent on the pharmaceutical trade could be affected.AIOCD president J.S.
