Mamata Banerjee and Ritabrata Banerjee (R) NEW DELHI: Expelled Trinamool Congress leader Ritabrata Banerjee on Friday exuded confidence that support for the rebel TMC faction he is leading will continue to “increase”.Ritabrata’s remarks came amid turmoil within Mamata Banerjee’s party.The expelled TMC leader claimed to have the backing of a sizeable section of MLAs from the party’s strength in the West Bengal assembly. He said the number of supporting MLAs would only increase. However, he clarified that he has not been in touch with any TMC MPs.Bengal leader of opposition and reber TMC leader Ritabrata Banerjee said, “I will say only one thing – our numbers will keep on increasing. Absolutely confident. There is no question of (the numbers) dropping. Let’s wait and watch. As far as the number of MLAs is concerned, the numbers will keep increasing…In the last week, I have not spoken to any MP.”He also appealed to chief minister Suvendu Adhikari to take action against BJP leader Priyanka Tibrewal, who allegedly protested outside the residence of fellow rebel TMC leader Sandipan Saha.West Bengal assembly’s leader of opposition and expelled Trinamool Congress leader Ritabrata Banerjee said, “Priyanka Tibrewal, BJP candidate who was defeated from Entally AC, protested in front of Sandipan Saha’s house. This is shameful. We filed a case against this incident in New Market PS. We appeal to CM Suvendu Adhikari to never support this kind of act and take action against it.”He further said, “If there was public outrage, was she also a part of the public? What was she doing there? Sandipan Saha’s house does not come under the Entally constituency, but the Chowringhee constituency. By gathering people from outside, they (BJP) did this.”Ritabrata’s claim to the post of leader of the opposition in Bengal has added to the chaos in TMC as party supremo Mamata Banerjee herself conceded defeat from her own Bhabanipur constituency. R Ramalinga Reddy NEW DELHI: Upset over being denied the Bengaluru development portfolio that he said was promised to him, senior Congress leader R Ramalinga Reddy on Friday resigned from the Karnataka cabinet just two days after being sworn in as a minister.Announcing his decision in Bengaluru, Reddy said he could not continue in the ministry after chief minister DK Shivakumar allegedly failed to honour an assurance made to him regarding the key portfolio.”The resignation comes at a time when Rahul Gandhi is in town. I cannot work against my conscience, so I am resigning as minister,” said Reddy.According to the veteran Congress leader, Shivakumar had assured him in 2023 that he would be given charge of the Bengaluru development department once he took over as chief minister after two and a half years. Reddy claimed that commitment was not fulfilled when portfolios were allocated following the latest Cabinet expansion.Expressing his disappointment, he said Shivakumar had “done a U-turn” on the earlier understanding.”I have been humiliated time and again, cannot take it anymore,” Reddy said.Despite stepping down from the ministerial post, Reddy made it clear that he would remain with the Congress and continue as an MLA.”I will continue to remain a Congress MLA and remain in Congress,” he said.The senior leader also highlighted his long association with the party, saying he had spent 53 years in the Congress and had no intention of leaving it. “I am not angry, only disappointed,” he said.Reddy further stated that he would not personally hand over his resignation to the chief minister and would instead send it through his personal secretary to the chief minister’s Office.His resignation comes amid reports of dissatisfaction within sections of the Karnataka Congress over the distribution of portfolios in the newly formed ministry.The newly inducted ministers include KH Muniyappa, KJ George, MB Patil, Ramalinga Reddy, Satish Jarkiholi, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge, UT Khader, Eshwara Khandre, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, Byrathi Suresh, and Sharan Prakash Patil.On Wednesday, Congress leader DK Shivakumar took oath as the 34th chief minister of Karnataka at a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan, marking a significant leadership transition in the state. Senior Congress leader G Parameshwara was also sworn in as the deputy chief minister.Shivakumar took the oath of office while carrying a copy of the Constitution of India, underscoring the significance of the occasion. R Ramalinga Reddy NEW DELHI: Upset over being denied the Bengaluru development portfolio that he said was promised to him, senior Congress leader R Ramalinga Reddy on Friday resigned from the Karnataka cabinet just two days after being sworn in as a minister.Announcing his decision in Bengaluru, Reddy said he could not continue in the ministry after chief minister DK Shivakumar allegedly failed to honour an assurance made to him regarding the key portfolio.”The resignation comes at a time when Rahul Gandhi is in town. I cannot work against my conscience, so I am resigning as minister,” said Reddy.According to the veteran Congress leader, Shivakumar had assured him in 2023 that he would be given charge of the Bengaluru development department once he took over as chief minister after two and a half years. Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran on Friday said the party would not suffer any loss following the exit of former state president K Annamalai. His remarks come after Annamalai’s resignation from the BJP was formally accepted earlier in the day.Addressing reporters after Annamalai’s exit, Nagendran said, “There is no loss.” His remarks came shortly after Annamalai announced the launch of a new political movement and confirmed that he would contest future assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.Earlier, Annamalai addressed supporters through social media and explained the reasons behind his decision to quit the BJP and start a new political platform. The former IPS officer said he had informed the BJP leadership about his decision several months ago.”I told the party on December 4, 2025 that I am going to resign. The party asked me to finish the elections and then go,” Annamalai said.He stated that he had joined the BJP with the aim of bringing positive change and now believed the time had come to build a new political alternative in Tamil Nadu.”We will encourage all segments of society to participate in the political movement. Furthermore, more technocrats will be encouraged to join the party,” he said.Annamalai said his proposed movement would seek to bring systemic changes to the state’s political culture.”We should use all available talent for the development of the state. To achieve that, we have to change our political grammar and culture. We should end cult politics and dynastic politics,” he said.He also stressed that politics should not revolve around individuals holding positions indefinitely.”There is no permanent MLA, MP or minister. This includes myself. This is going to be our goal and motto of our political movement,” he added.According to Annamalai, Tamil Nadu requires another political force that can offer a different style of governance and leadership.”There is a need for another political party,” he said.Annamalai urged his supporters to remain patient as the new movement takes shape.”Whoever wants to join, let them be patient. They need a curing period, like a brick used to build a building’s foundation. Believe me and stay with me. We will surely bring a revolution to Tamil Nadu and make it the number one state in the country,” he said.He further said that young people were looking for change and that the movement would seek to connect with them through modern platforms.”Our youth are hungry for change. We cannot ignore them, and that is why we are reaching out to them through social media,” he said.Annamalai announced that the movement would be called the APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Ethics and Politics and would be headquartered in Coimbatore.The BJP confirmed that party president Nitin Nabin had accepted Annamalai’s resignation from the primary membership of the party.In an official statement, the BJP said, “The National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Nitin Nabin, has accepted the resignation submitted by the Tamil Nadu Ex. State President, K. Annamalai, from the primary membership of the Party.”The development came after Annamalai visited New Delhi and held meetings with BJP president Nitin Nabin, party general secretary BL Santhosh and home minister Amit Shah.Annamalai’s exit follows months of speculation about his future in the BJP. The rumours gained momentum after the BJP’s poor performance in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, where the party secured only around three per cent vote share while contesting as part of the AIADMK-led alliance.Despite the recent setback, Annamalai is widely credited with significantly expanding the BJP’s presence in Tamil Nadu during his tenure as state president.
