LUCKNOW: Parents of the resident doctor of King George’s Medical University, who has been accused of sexually exploiting a colleague and pressuring her for religious conversion for marriage, were arrested from a rented flat in Thakurganj area of Lucknow on Monday.DCP (west zone) Vishwajeet Srivastava claimed Salimuddin (70) and his wife Khateeja (67), parents of the accused doctor, Rameezuddin (38), played a key role in conversion and miscarriage of two women medical students, one at KGMU and the other at Agra medical college.”Both the survivors have given written testimonies in the presence of a magistrate that they were forcibly converted, sexually exploited, and subjected to miscarriage by not just the KGMU doctor ut also his parents,” said a police officer privy to the investigation. Initially, police had announced a reward of Rs 25,000 on arrest of the doctor, which was further increased to Rs 50,000 on Monday.On Dec 23, 2025, one of the survivors had submitted a written complaint at Chowk police station.Based on her complaint, an FIR was lodged under sections of rape, miscarriage, marriage by deceit under BNS, along with Sections 3/5 of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act.Another medical student from Agra also accused the doctor of sexual assault, conversion, and miscarriage. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to Congress leader Pawan Khera, directing him to cooperate with the investigation, appear before police when summoned, and not tamper with evidence. The court also directed that he must not leave the country without prior permission of the competent court, while allowing the trial court to impose additional conditions if required.The Supreme Court clarified that its observations on documents and facts are limited to the bail stage and will not affect the merits of the case. It also said that the trial court should proceed independently without being influenced by its remarks.Top court flags ‘political rivalry’ in proceedingsThe bench emphasised that criminal law must be applied with caution, stating, “The criminal process must be applied with objectivity and circumspection so as to ensure that individual liberty is not imperilled by proceedings that may be coloured by political rivalry.”It also found fault with the Gauhati High Court’s reasoning, noting that it had incorrectly relied on provisions not invoked in the FIR and had shifted the burden onto the accused. “In our view, the observations made by the High Court in the order impugned are not based on a correct appreciation of all the material placed on record and appear to be erroneous,” the apex court said.The case stems from allegations that Khera, during press conferences on April 5 in Delhi and Guwahati, claimed that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma held multiple foreign passports and undisclosed overseas assets. TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee NEW DELHI: The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Friday moved Supreme Court against the Calcutta high court’s order rejecting the plea challenging deployment of only central government’s staff at couting centers on May 4.The Mamata Banerjee’s party had challenged the poll duty assigned to central government and PSU (Public Sector Undertaking) employees as supervisors in the vote counting.The high court told the TMC that appointing central or state officers as counting supervisors is the Election Commission’s prerogative. It said that if central officers are found to have manipulated counting and favoured the BJP, the party can file an election petition. Earlier, the court had asked why only central officers were being appointed, to which the EC replied that the same practice was followed in Kerala.Justice Krishna Rao, hearing the case, asked EC, “If there is an objection, can the Election Commission not adjudicate? Why are you not going for the state govt?” The HC also pointed out that the statute allows the ECI to appoint employees from either the state govt or central govt and employees of PSUs for the role.EC counsel Dama Seshadri Naidu replied, “We have done that in Kerala. We have not singled out any state. As the situation demands, we do that.”Senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee, appearing for the petitioner, questioned, “Do you disbelieve these state govt employees? You have conducted the entire election with state govt staff. Why are you adopting a discriminatory approach towards West Bengal? In all, 2,500 companies have been brought here. If even one company had been in Pahalgam, those 26 people would not have been killed.”Justice Rao in his order said, “Section 100 of the Representation of the People Act provides that any noncompliance with the provisions of the Constitution of this Act or of any rules or orders made under this Act shall be grounds for declaring election to be void and thus, if the petitioner finds that during the counting, the central govt employees who have been appointed as counting supervisor and counting assistants favoured the candi-date of the BJP due to which the candidate of the petitioner defeated, the petitioner has the liberty to challenge the same in an election petition.”The high court also said while dismissing the petition, “It is the prerogative of the office of the Election Commission of India to appoint the counting supervisor and counting assistant either from the state govt or the central govt. This court does not find any illegality for appointing counting supervisor and counting assistant from the central govt / central PSU employee instead of state govt employee.”The high court also said, “Only the counting supervisor and the counting assistants will not be in the counting room. Micro observers, counting agents of the candidates who are contesting the election and counting personnel will also be in the counting room.
