Shashi Tharoor (IANS) NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had conveyed India’s concerns to US President Donald Trump regarding the safety of civilian sailors has earned him the ire of his party. “Admiration for PM Modi appears to have transcended the limitations of the physical world” and he now “seems capable of hearing what Modi doesn’t even say”, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said in response to queries regarding Tharoor’s remarks which were at odds with leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi’s allegation that PM had not taken up with Trump the issue of deaths of three Indian seafarers who were killed by the US navy after their Palau-flagged ship breached the US-imposed naval blockade. Tharoor responded on X that he found it extraordinary that a statement about protecting Indian civilian sailors was “being twisted into a partisan political controversy”. Tharoor’s statement saying that the PM had raised the issue of Indian seafarers with the US President, led BJP to take a dig at Rahul Gandhi. “Dr Shashi Tharoor contradicted Rahul Gandhi’s stand on the same issue…” party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said. “Not just that, Tharoor has effusively praised PM Modi’s vision, articulation, dynamism and oratory. Mamata Banerjee (File photo) NEW DELHI: The rebel faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by leader of the opposition and Uluberia Purba MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, on Monday named senior party MLA Arup Roy as the chairperson of what it described as the “real” TMC. Trinamool was founded by Mamata Banerjee in January 1998 after she quit the Congress. Therefore, it became necessary to initiate the process of reconstituting the party’s national leadership,” a leader present at the meeting quoted Ritabrata Banerjee as saying.Roy, the MLA from Howrah Central, was elected chairperson by voice vote.The faction also announced a new national working committee comprising Roy, Ritabrata Banerjee, one-time Mamata Banerjee aide and former Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim, Arup Biswas, Biplab Mitra, Akhruzzaman Ansari, Sabina Yasmin, Sandipan Saha, Rathin Ghosh, and Javed Khan.Firhad Hakim, Arup Biswas, Rathin Ghosh and Sabina Yasmin were named vice-chairpersons, while Ritabrata Banerjee, Javed Khan and Sandipan Saha were appointed general secretaries.Akhruzzaman Ansari was later named treasurer. The faction also resolved to appoint an auditor to examine the party’s finances.Sending a message to Mamata?The backdrop itself underscored the political messaging of the gathering. While the TMC’s party symbol remained prominently displayed, portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and BR Ambedkar adorned the stage. Conspicuously absent were photographs of Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, long seen as her political successor and blamed by many dissidents as the reason for their revolt.After TMC’s defeat, 58 of its 80 MLAs backed Ritabrata Banerjee’s claim to the post of leader of the opposition, rejecting the nominee favoured by the Mamata Banerjee camp. Atleast 12 feared dead after fire engulfs coaching centre-cum gaming zone NEW DELHI: Several young students have been killed after massive fire broke out at a coaching-cum-gaming zone in Lucknow’s Aliganj area on Monday, while several others are reported to have suffered injuries.Fourteen fire tenders, including a hydraulic platform vehicle, were pressed into service after a fire broke out around 3 pm in a building on Usha Mehta Marg in Lucknow’s Aliganj area. While Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak, who visited the site, said the fire erupted at an animation centre,while fire department officials said that it originated in a coaching centre operating in the building.15 children deadAt least 15 students are confirmed dead in the incident. Meanwhile, deputy CM Pathak confirmed the death of 14 students.”Our priority is providing the best possible medical treatment to the injured. Details on how and why it occurred will be ascertained only after the inquiry report. Authorities have completed the search operation at the site and confirmed that no children remain trapped. Strict action will be taken against those found responsible with no leniency. Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde at press conference in Mumbai NEW DELHI: The split in Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) became official on Monday, with its six rebel Lok Sabha MPs joining the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.The announcement came during a press conference in Mumbai, marking the dissidents’ first joint public appearance since speculation about their switch began.Of the six MPs, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Omraje Nimbalkar had already declared on Sunday that they were moving to the Shiv Sena led by Shinde. The others are Sanjay Haribhai Jadhav, Sanjay Dina Patil, Bhausaheb Rajaram Wakchaure, and Sanjay Uttamrao Deshmukh.The move reduces Sena (UBT)’s strength in the House to just three MPs, while giving the rebels the two-thirds support required to bypass the anti-defection law and stake claim to recognition as a separate faction.(Developing story)Get the latest India news and live updates.
