Karnataka BJP turns to Lord Manjunatha to uncover truth in cross-voting row NEW DELHI: Karnataka BJP president B Y Vijayendra on Sunday said the party will hold a legislature party meeting at Dharmasthala to uncover the truth behind allegations of cross-voting by BJP MLAs during the recent Legislative Council elections.He said legislators may be asked to take a ‘Pramaana’ (oath/vow) before Lord Manjunatha and reveal whether they voted against the party’s candidates.Vijayendra termed the alleged cross-voting as a “betrayal” and said the matter would be taken to its logical conclusion.“We all believe in God. Everyone will have to come to the holy town of Dharmasthala, where a legislature party meeting should be held. The truth will come out there, and the matter should be decided there,” Vijayendra told reporters, according to news agency PTI.Dharmasthala, located on the banks of the Nethravati River in Dakshina Kannada district, is a prominent pilgrimage centre with an 800-year-old history.The temple town is dedicated to Lord Manjunatha, a form of Lord Shiva. According to local belief, anyone who speaks an untruth before the deity faces consequences.BJP suspicion over cross-votingThe BJP chief said reports in the media and social media suggested that at least four BJP MLAs had cross-voted during the Legislative Council polls, creating suspicion over all 63 party legislators.“There is a lot of discussion in the media, the press and social media regarding at least four cross-votes from BJP MLAs during the recent Legislative Council polls. Our party workers have expressed displeasure about the conduct of our legislators. This development has, in a way, caused suspicion about 63 BJP legislators,” Vijayendra said.He said the incident had upset party workers and damaged the confidence of the cadre.“It is natural that the workers are hurt, and there will be reactions in the media. I’m not saying they are wrong. But somewhere, we must put an end to such an act by legislators who have won on a BJP ticket with the blessing of the people and the hard work of party workers,” he said.Vijayendra added that those found guilty would face action irrespective of their position.“Whoever is found guilty of cross-voting will have to face action regardless of seniority,” he said, adding that the issue must be resolved to protect the party’s image.Fact-finding panel formedThe BJP has already constituted a fact-finding committee comprising party leaders C T Ravi, Mahesh Tenginakai and N Mahesh to examine the allegations.Vijayendra said he had spoken to BJP national president Nitin Nabin over the matter and would travel to Delhi along with leader of opposition R Ashoka to discuss the issue.“You may not believe it — I got up at 3 am today because I wanted to take the issue to a logical end. I called the party’s national president at 7 am yesterday, and he sought an explanation,” he said.The BJP leadership has also summoned senior Karnataka leaders to Delhi over the issue, with state president Vijayendra, R Ashoka and state in-charge Radha Mohan Das Agarwal expected to meet the high command.Congress gains in MLC pollsThe controversy erupted after the ruling Congress won five of the seven Legislative Council seats that went to polls, while the BJP secured two seats. The JD(S) failed to win the seat it contested.The voting pattern raised questions over cross-voting within the opposition ranks. Congress candidates together received 151 votes, higher than the party’s expected strength of 140, while BJP and JD(S) candidates fell short of their anticipated numbers.The BJP had 64 MLAs, and its two candidates received a combined 56 votes, while the JD(S), which has 18 MLAs, received only 14 votes for its candidate.The results triggered speculation of cross-voting from NDA legislators.Vijayendra said the secret ballot system had made it difficult to identify the legislators involved but assured that the party would complete its inquiry.“Because of the secret ballot, suspicion has fallen on all 63 legislators, including me,” he said.The BJP leader said the proposed Dharmasthala meeting would help bring clarity to the issue and reassure party workers who have expressed anger over the alleged betrayal.Get the latest India news and live updates. Both good friends—you are bringing a bad name to the country, and people are suffering because of both of you,” Kharge claimed as per news agency PTI.Blaming Trump for rising fuel prices, he criticised the Modi government’s foreign policy, saying India had moved away from its long-standing non-aligned approach.”India followed a policy of non-alignment since Nehru’s time and maintained good relations with all countries. But that policy has been abandoned, and Modi, by going around calling everyone his friend and hugging them, has brought us to this situation.”Urging Congress workers to strengthen the party’s outreach, Kharge said they should educate people about issues affecting the country and help them understand which government would best serve their interests.”We (Congress workers) should keep in mind which government will be beneficial for the country and its people. We should inform people about it. Go to the people and make them understand what is happening,” he said.Kharge also revived allegations of financial irregularities linked to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, claiming that donations collected over the years for the temple’s construction had not been properly accounted for.Referring to contributions made during and after L K Advani’s Rath Yatra, he alleged that reports pointed to large-scale misuse of funds.”There are reports that about Rs 5,000 crore has been misused. The priests are robbing the money. Ram naam japna, paraya maal apna (chant the name of Ram and make someone else’s property your own). A loot has happened in the name of Ram. The temple was constructed to loot crores of rupees,” he alleged.Questioning the handling of temple donations, Kharge called for an investigation into where the money was going and whether those responsible should be held accountable.”The money from the donation boxes of temples is going somewhere. Whether his own people are behind it or someone else, it should be investigated,” he said.Responding to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s appeal to wait for a Special Investigation Team probe into allegations of missing donations and financial irregularities at the temple, Kharge questioned the need for a delay.”Why do you need 15 days when God is with you, the temple is with you, Modi is with you, and you are the CM? Put those who have looted in the name of Ram behind bars.”He further accused the BJP of exploiting religion for political gains while failing to uphold religious values.”People voted in the name of God, the Ram Mandir and religion. But are these people protecting religion? There is loot in the name of religion, and the poor are being oppressed in the name of religion,” he added.Turning to education, Kharge criticised the Centre over the conduct of the NEET examination and reiterated Rahul Gandhi’s demand that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resign.”They are unable to conduct examinations properly. Students and parents have been betrayed by the BJP and Pradhan. He has to resign,” he said.Kharge suggested that Karnataka’s CET model could be studied and proposed that Class 12 or PUC marks should also be factored into admissions alongside NEET scores.The Congress chief also targeted the Modi government over inflation and unemployment, alleging that it was focused on concentrating power and wealth among a select few while neglecting the needs of ordinary citizens.”This Modi government will fall one day, wait and watch. A big trouble is coming for Modi, wait and watch. They are not doing anything properly to help people, whether workers, women or students,” he claimed.He further alleged that changes to the education system and curriculum were being carried out in a way that misled students and promoted ideological influence in academic institutions.”They are doing it to retain political control,” he said, alleging that individuals linked to the RSS were being appointed to key educational positions.Reaffirming the Congress party’s commitment to constitutional values, Kharge said the Constitution remained crucial for protecting the rights of disadvantaged and marginalised sections of society.”The Constitution is needed for the poor and the downtrodden to protect their rights,” he added.Get the latest India news and live updates. The temple was constructed to loot crores of rupees,” he alleged.Questioning the handling of temple donations, Kharge called for an investigation into where the money was going and whether those responsible should be held accountable.”The money from the donation boxes of temples is going somewhere. Whether his own people are behind it or someone else, it should be investigated,” he said.Responding to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s appeal to wait for a Special Investigation Team probe into allegations of missing donations and financial irregularities at the temple, Kharge questioned the need for a delay.”Why do you need 15 days when God is with you, the temple is with you, Modi is with you, and you are the CM? Put those who have looted in the name of Ram behind bars.”He further accused the BJP of exploiting religion for political gains while failing to uphold religious values.”People voted in the name of God, the Ram Mandir and religion. But are these people protecting religion? There is loot in the name of religion, and the poor are being oppressed in the name of religion,” he added.Turning to education, Kharge criticised the Centre over the conduct of the NEET examination and reiterated Rahul Gandhi’s demand that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resign.”They are unable to conduct examinations properly. Students and parents have been betrayed by the BJP and Pradhan. He has to resign,” he said.Kharge suggested that Karnataka’s CET model could be studied and proposed that Class 12 or PUC marks should also be factored into admissions alongside NEET scores.The Congress chief also targeted the Modi government over inflation and unemployment, alleging that it was focused on concentrating power and wealth among a select few while neglecting the needs of ordinary citizens.”This Modi government will fall one day, wait and watch. A big trouble is coming for Modi, wait and watch. They are not doing anything properly to help people, whether workers, women or students,” he claimed.He further alleged that changes to the education system and curriculum were being carried out in a way that misled students and promoted ideological influence in academic institutions.”They are doing it to retain political control,” he said, alleging that individuals linked to the RSS were being appointed to key educational positions.Reaffirming the Congress party’s commitment to constitutional values, Kharge said the Constitution remained crucial for protecting the rights of disadvantaged and marginalised sections of society.”The Constitution is needed for the poor and the downtrodden to protect their rights,” he added.Get the latest India news and live updates. Sights as students appeared for re-exam NEW DELHI: More than a month after the NEET-UG 2026 examination was scrapped over allegations of a question paper leak, over 22 lakh medical aspirants had to return to examination halls across the country and abroad on Sunday for the re-exam. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the re-exam was held at 5,440 centres across 551 cities in India and 14 international locations. With the credibility of the country’s largest medical entrance examination at stake, and massive uproar from political opposition and the public, authorities rolled out an unprecedented security framework involving biometric verification, CCTV surveillance, signal jammers, frisking personnel and multi-agency coordination. As the examination concluded, candidates reported a moderate-to-tough paper, while the day also witnessed emotional moments and entry disputes. Also, with the re-examination now concluded, attention will shift to the release of provisional answer keys, results and the ongoing CBI investigation into the alleged paper leak.Security measures at centresTo prevent a repeat of the controversy that led to the cancellation of the original exam, the NTA implemented one of the most extensive security frameworks ever deployed for a national entrance test.Examination rooms were equipped with CCTV cameras under continuous monitoring, while jammers supplied by ECIL and BEL were deployed to block unauthorised communications. Every room had two invigilators, and each centre was staffed by more than ten functionaries overseeing various aspects of the examination process.Nearly 38,795 frisking personnel and 48,448 biometric staff were deployed for face authentication and verification. Around 6,700 observers and more than 100 virtual observers monitored proceedings across the country. Police, paramilitary personnel, local administration officials, the Indian Air Force and the Department of Posts were involved in securing the transport and handling of confidential examination materials.Authorities also introduced candidate welfare measures, including drinking water, ORS packets, ambulances, shaded waiting areas for parents and additional rough sheets. Extra time was allotted to account for the extensive verification and entry formalities.Student reactionsInitial reactions from candidates suggested that the paper was largely moderate, although Physics emerged as the most challenging section for many aspirants.”The exam was quite moderate. Physics was quite lengthy, a little bit tougher than last time. Biology was good and Chemistry was moderate,” a candidate in Delhi told ANI.Another candidate told reporters, “It was a little harder than last time. It was my first attempt, I will get around 500 marks. The arrangements inside were fine.”From Srinagar, a candidate remarked, “The paper was very good. My preparation was very good, only Physics was a little difficult. Otherwise, it was good overall.”In Chennai, candidate Tarun said, “I did well but let’s see. The exam was tougher than last time.”A candidate in Ranchi described the paper as “easy to moderate”, adding that Biology was easier, Chemistry was moderate and Physics was tougher compared with the previous examination.Overall, student feedback pointed to a mixed experience, with most candidates agreeing that Physics required more time and effort than the other sections.Emotional moments and controversiesWhile the re-examination was conducted under a tight security blanket, the day was marked by several emotional moments and entry-related disputes across the country.Several candidates were denied entry after arriving beyond the 1.30 pm cut-off, with traffic congestion, documentation issues, navigation errors and unforeseen circumstances emerging as common reasons for delays. In Delhi, a candidate alleged that she had reached the examination centre at 1.30 pm but was still not allowed to enter after authorities refused to reopen the gates.Similar scenes unfolded in Mumbai’s Parel area, where two candidates were denied entry after reaching the centre beyond the prescribed deadline, leading to protests outside the venue. In Bengaluru, four aspirants missed entry after arriving shortly after the cut-off time, with parents blaming heavy traffic caused by a Congress rally. According to eyewitnesses, centre authorities locked the gates at exactly 1:30 pm in accordance with NTA guidelines, leaving several candidates stranded outside.Candidates in Uttar Pradesh also reported difficulties after allegedly being directed to the wrong location by Google Maps. In another case, an aspirant said he lost crucial time after returning to retrieve a passport photograph required during the verification process. The issue sparked debate among students and parents, with the candidate insisting that she had appeared in the earlier May examination wearing the same attire. “I have come from Beawar to take the NEET exam. When I took the exam on May 3, I was wearing the same attire that I am wearing now: a burqa and a dupatta. Initially, they said I would have to remove the dupatta to enter; then they insisted I had to remove the burqa as well,” said a candidate Kulsum Bano. A separate controversy emerged in Gujarat, where students were reportedly asked to remove religious items such as sacred threads and kanthi necklaces during frisking. The incident triggered protests by activists associated with Hindu organisations outside the examination centre, prompting police intervention to maintain order.Authorities, however, maintained that all procedures were carried out strictly in accordance with NTA guidelines and security protocols.Heartwarming momentsAmid the controversies, there were multiple inspiring moments as well involving students taking exams against odds, PM Modi and education minister Dharemendra Pradhan.For instance, Shrishti Dubey, a NEET-UG aspirant from Kolkata who is recovering from major surgery after a road accident on June 14, was able to appear for the re-examination following special arrangements made by authorities. She wrote the examination in a separate room with medical support and a standby ambulance stationed at the centre.Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan personally spoke to Shrishti’s parents during the examination to enquire about her condition and wish her success. The decision was taken amid widespread concerns over the integrity of the examination and demands for a fresh test from students and parents.More than 22.79 lakh candidates were eligible to appear for the re-examination, which was conducted from 2 pm to 5.15 pm. Fresh admit cards were issued and candidates were allowed to revise their city preferences before the examination. The exam was tougher than last time.”A candidate in Ranchi described the paper as “easy to moderate”, adding that Biology was easier, Chemistry was moderate and Physics was tougher compared with the previous examination.Overall, student feedback pointed to a mixed experience, with most candidates agreeing that Physics required more time and effort than the other sections.Emotional moments and controversiesWhile the re-examination was conducted under a tight security blanket, the day was marked by several emotional moments and entry-related disputes across the country.Several candidates were denied entry after arriving beyond the 1.30 pm cut-off, with traffic congestion, documentation issues, navigation errors and unforeseen circumstances emerging as common reasons for delays. In Delhi, a candidate alleged that she had reached the examination centre at 1.30 pm but was still not allowed to enter after authorities refused to reopen the gates.Similar scenes unfolded in Mumbai’s Parel area, where two candidates were denied entry after reaching the centre beyond the prescribed deadline, leading to protests outside the venue. In Bengaluru, four aspirants missed entry after arriving shortly after the cut-off time, with parents blaming heavy traffic caused by a Congress rally. According to eyewitnesses, centre authorities locked the gates at exactly 1:30 pm in accordance with NTA guidelines, leaving several candidates stranded outside.Candidates in Uttar Pradesh also reported difficulties after allegedly being directed to the wrong location by Google Maps. In another case, an aspirant said he lost crucial time after returning to retrieve a passport photograph required during the verification process. The issue sparked debate among students and parents, with the candidate insisting that she had appeared in the earlier May examination wearing the same attire. “I have come from Beawar to take the NEET exam. When I took the exam on May 3, I was wearing the same attire that I am wearing now: a burqa and a dupatta. Initially, they said I would have to remove the dupatta to enter; then they insisted I had to remove the burqa as well,” said a candidate Kulsum Bano. A separate controversy emerged in Gujarat, where students were reportedly asked to remove religious items such as sacred threads and kanthi necklaces during frisking. The incident triggered protests by activists associated with Hindu organisations outside the examination centre, prompting police intervention to maintain order.Authorities, however, maintained that all procedures were carried out strictly in accordance with NTA guidelines and security protocols.Heartwarming momentsAmid the controversies, there were multiple inspiring moments as well involving students taking exams against odds, PM Modi and education minister Dharemendra Pradhan.For instance, Shrishti Dubey, a NEET-UG aspirant from Kolkata who is recovering from major surgery after a road accident on June 14, was able to appear for the re-examination following special arrangements made by authorities. She wrote the examination in a separate room with medical support and a standby ambulance stationed at the centre.Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan personally spoke to Shrishti’s parents during the examination to enquire about her condition and wish her success. The decision was taken amid widespread concerns over the integrity of the examination and demands for a fresh test from students and parents.More than 22.79 lakh candidates were eligible to appear for the re-examination, which was conducted from 2 pm to 5.15 pm. Fresh admit cards were issued and candidates were allowed to revise their city preferences before the examination. Thanking the minister, her father said, “It is all because of you that my daughter is giving the exam.”Her mother said the family had almost lost hope of her appearing for the examination before doctors advised them to seek special permission from authorities. “We had given up hope that she would ever be able to give the exam.
