Jammu bridge collapse JAMMU: Rescue workers pulled out another body from the debris of a collapsed bridge in Thuther area of Bantalab in Jammu, taking the toll to three. Govt has initiated a probe and suspended two engineers.The accident took place when workers were engaged in repair work on the bridge, which had developed cracks following the 2025 flash floods, and got buried under the rubble after a section of the structure suddenly gave away on Friday. While one worker, Tarsem Lal, was rescued and hospitalised with injuries, three bodies were retrieved during a 12-hour operation. The deceased were identified as Panchu Sethi (50) from Odisha’s Ganjam district, and Harish Kumar (28) and Raj Kumar (30), both from Chhattisgarh.“An official of the Fire and Emergency Department, Mohammad Jaffar, was also injured after being hit by a boulder during the rescue operation, and has been admitted in hospital,” said an official.Soon after the bridge caved in, teams comprising police, Army, SDRF, NDRF and the civil administration rushed to the site and launched a coordinated rescue operation. Heavy machinery, including JCBs, was pressed into service to expedite the search and rescue efforts.Deputy CM Surinder Kumar Choudhary visited the spot at midnight and ordered the suspension of assistant executive engineer Sahil Verma and junior engineer Sajad Mir, pending inquiry under Rule 331 of the J&K Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules-1956.Govt has also constituted a three-member inquiry committee that has been tasked to probe all aspects of the incident, including any dereliction of duty by departmental officers, and fix responsibility, especially of the executing agency. The committee will also recommend action against those responsible, and suggest measures to prevent such incidents in future. More than $20m is to be paid out when its results are declared. There’s more than $5m riding on the West Bengal election, almost $400,000 on the Kerala election, $180,000 on the Assam election, and almost $19,000 on the Puducherry election.And what do they predict? For Tamil Nadu, the odds are overwhelmingly in favour of DMK (88%). For West Bengal, Trinamool has a narrow edge in these bets (53%). In Kerala, most of the money is on Congress (75%), which has largely been in the lead except for a few swaps in the lead with CPM since the beginning of April. In Assam, the money is almost entirely on BJP (98%). And in Puducherry, almost entirely on the AINRC-led NDA alliance (86%).Indian law doesn’t allow prediction markets to operate within India. But because Polymarket is decentralised and crypto-based, it is technically possible for Indian users to use VPN and crypto to place bets on outcomes. India is the world’s largest cryptocurrency user.Earlier this month, Forbes reported that some anonymous Polymarket wallets seemed to be winning unusually often on earnings markets for companies audited by a single global consultancy firm. The wallets had India-coded names like “Kaleenbhaiya” (a character from the series Mirzapur), the report said.Prediction platforms rise on crowd wisdomPrediction markets thrive in the US. Polymarket is just one prediction market. The oldest online prediction market — Iowa Electronic Markets — has been around since 1988. There’s the US-regulated Kalshi, the academically rooted PredictIt, and community-created Manifold, among others.The idea is that collective wisdom might capture something that expert analysis can’t — simply because it’s from a pool of people with beliefs strong enough to place money on it. And it’s serious money. The biggest all-time winner on Polymarket made profits of $22m with 18 correct predictions, the largest of which came from a bet on Trump becoming US president which got them $8.3m.Prediction markets have often been accurate about future events, and have been found to be helpful with planning. A store chain in the US, for instance, used prediction market insights to determine everything from demand to when it should open the store. Obviously, they can also go wrong. For instance, in 2016, they badly misread Brexit and Donald Trump’s victory.Prediction market platforms say that, unlike a betting site, it involves people betting against each other — and not the “house”, with fixed odds set by the platform. Regulators say that the difference doesn’t really matter.In India, the same model was called opinion trading but some of the biggest platforms — Probo, Better Opinions, MPL Opinio, and TradeX have shut down.How does Polymarket work? Like a stock market for predictions for which the outcome is a neat yes or no.The platform’s markets team creates a “market” for the question, and sets down rules — how it will be resolved, when, and so on. These are carefully phrased to avoid disputes, with specific deadlines and clarifying grey areas.When there are multiple possibilities — like these assembly elections — Polymarket creates an “event” within which many separate markets, each specific to a possible yes-or-no outcome, operate. Like will BJP win Bengal? Will the DMK win TN? And so on.Once the market is live, users can buy “Yes” or “No” shares from each other.A single share on Polymarket is priced between $0 and $1, and the price directly represents what the market believes is the probability of that outcome. So, if a “Yes” share on the bet is priced at 75 cents, it means market believes there’s a 75% chance of it happening.People can cash out at any point by selling their shares at whatever the price is at that point. And prices go up and down by the same logic as the stock market — how many people are willing to place money on which outcome.At the predetermined deadline, the market is “resolved” — those with the correct prediction get $1 for each of their shares, and everyone else loses their money. If someone bought their shares at a lower price — when the odds were lower — they stand to gain more than someone who bought in when the prices — and so, the odds — were higher.For instance, one user, “orangexyz”, has bought more than 80,000 shares for TVK winning the highest number of seats in Tamil Nadu — at a little under 11 cents a share. In a scenario in which TVK does indeed end up winning the most seats, the user would make more than nine times of what they put in.On the other hand, the top holder betting on DMK winning, “Asphaleios”, has a little less than 28,000 shares — bought at about 87 cents. Citing, “subversion of democratic process”, it announce its decision with counting scheduled for May 24. The Election Commission’s decision to order a repoll in parts of Falta assembly constituency follows allegations of electoral irregularities raised during the second phase of polling on April 29.The BJP had claimed that its party symbol on electronic voting machines (EVMs) was allegedly taped over at several booths in the constituency, preventing voters from selecting its option. Party leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, flagged the issue with senior leadership, while BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described it as the “Diamond Harbour Model” and demanded immediate corrective action.Specific polling stations, including one at Harindanga High School and booth number 189, were cited by the party as being affected.The West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer had responded at the time that any such complaints would be verified and that confirmed instances would lead to repolling.Following reports from returning officers, observers, and what the poll body termed “material circumstances,” the Election Commission subsequently ordered repolling in select booths, including in Falta, to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.The move comes amid heightened political tensions in the Diamond Harbour region, with both the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress accusing each other of influencing the polling process.The Falta assembly constituency, which went to polls in Phase 2 of the 2026 West Bengal elections on April 29, saw a six-cornered contest. The key candidates in the fray include Jahangir Khan of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Debangshu Panda of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Abdur Razzak Molla of the Congress, and Sambhu Nath Kurmi of the CPI(M), along with Independents Dip Hati and Chandrakanta Roy.Repolling held in South 24 Parganas on May 2Repolling across 15 polling booths in two assembly constituencies of South 24 Parganas district was conducted on May 2 under tight security, with high voter turnout recorded.According to officials, polling remained largely peaceful across 11 booths in Magrahat Paschim and four in Diamond Harbour, with turnout crossing 86 per cent.The repoll had been ordered following complaints of irregularities during the April 29 voting phase.An isolated incident at a booth in Diamond Harbour triggered protests after the Trinamool Congress alleged harassment of a specially abled voter and his mother by central forces. Authorities said the situation was brought under control and polling continued without major disruption.SC declines TMC plea on counting staffThe Supreme Court, earlier in the day, refused to pass any directions on the Trinamool Congress’ plea challenging the deployment of Central government staff in the vote counting process for the West Bengal assembly elections.A bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Joymalya Bagchi recorded the Election Commission’s assurance that its April 13 circular would be implemented and said no further orders were necessary.The TMC had moved the court after the Calcutta High Court rejected its challenge. During the hearing, the court noted that the Returning Officer, a State government official, retains overall control of the counting process, and that party-appointed agents would be present.The Election Commission told the court that both Central and State government personnel would be deployed, with one from each serving as counting supervisor and assistant. Exit polls are nothing but an attempt to manipulate the stock market.
