‘US will never be a communist country’: Trump’s message follows big night for Mamdani-backed progressives
US President Donald Trump posted a brief but pointed message on Truth Social on Wednesday, declaring that the United States would ‘NEVER’ become a communist country, hours after candidates backed by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured key victories in Democratic primary elections.Unlike Trump’s typically lengthy social media posts, the message offered no context.“America the Beautiful will NEVER be a Communist Country!!!” , Trump wrote on Truth Social in a late-night post at around 2:40 am.The post came hours after all three congressional candidates endorsed by Mamdani won their respective Democratic primary contests in New York. The victories included the defeat of two incumbent Democrats and a win in an open congressional district, further boosting the influence of the city’s progressive wing.
Trump’s earlier attacks on Mamdani
While Trump’s post did not mention Zohran Mamdani by name, the US president has previously criticised the self-described democratic socialist over his political views.In June 2025, days after Mamdani defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the first round of New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, Trump criticised the candidate while speaking to reporters at the White House.“I can’t believe that’s happening,” Trump said.“That’s a terrible thing for our country, by the way,” he added, referring to Mamdani’s victory.Trump also called Mamdani “a communist” and warned that New York City could become “a communistic city” if he were elected mayor.
Mamdani-backed candidates prevail
The latest primary results shed light on Mamdani’s growing influence within Democratic politics.Former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander defeated incumbent Congressman Dan Goldman, while Claire Valdez won the Democratic nomination in New York’s 7th Congressional District. Darializa Chevalier secured the Democratic nomination in New York’s 13th Congressional District after defeating incumbent Congressman Adriano Espaillat.Lander, who cross-endorsed Mamdani during the mayoral race, celebrated his victory on Tuesday night with the New York mayor.According to an AP report, Lander used his victory speech to vow to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), describe Israel’s war in Gaza as “genocide” and refer to “Trump’s fascism”.
A shifting relationship
Despite their earlier clashes, relations between Trump and Mamdani appeared to soften after the latter became mayor.Trump had previously referred to Mamdani as a “communist lunatic”, while Mamdani had described Trump as a “despot”. However, during their first face-to-face meeting in November 2025, Trump struck a markedly different tone.“I’ll really be cheering for him,” Trump said.Mamdani described the meeting as “productive” and “focused on a place of shared admiration and love, which is New York City and the need to deliver affordability to New Yorkers.”The two have since held multiple Oval Office meetings, reflecting a more pragmatic working relationship despite their political differences.
