NEW DELHI: The war of words between BJP and Congress escalated Monday as the opposition party slammed the FIR against Rahul Gandhi after he demanded action over “purification” of the Haldwani rally venue as reflective of his rival’s “abhorrently casteist behaviour” and BJP saying he was belatedly raking up the issue because of Mallikharjun Kharge’s threat to quit as Congress chief.The sparring between the two parties came a day after Uttarakhand Police registered a case against Rahul under various BNS sections, besides SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, after the complainant, a Dalit, alleged he had given a caste angle to the cleaning work coupled with a religious ritual at Ramlila Maidan, the rally venue.Congress released a video with the title “cases are my medals” with Rahul’s comments – “There are 36 cases against me. NEW DELHI: Maintaining that there was no external pressure behind its decision to not publish Sonia Gandhi’s memoir, Penguin Random House India Monday said there was an impasse over “a particular issue” during discussions on ‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’.The publisher didn’t disclose the contentious issue, citing “agreement and author confidentiality”. The fresh clarification comes amid a controversy over the India publication of Sonia Gandhi’s much-anticipated memoir following an announcement by the US-based Alfred A Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House, that the book would be released worldwide on Nov 10.Several Congress functionaries have raised issues of governmental pressure and freedom of expression.In its latest statement, PRHI specifically rejected suggestions that the decision was driven by outside intervention. “We feel it is important for us to correct certain misrepresentations regarding the forthcoming memoir ‘Belonging’. India to witness above avg temperature in September; rainfall likely to be below normal NEW DELHI: Monthly rainfall over the country as a whole is most likely to be below normal in Sept, the last month of the monsoon season, said IMD Monday – an indication that the four-month rainy season is likely to end with overall deficient cumulative rainfall, as was predicted earlier due to the impact of El Nino.IMD said Aug, which reported a deficit of more than 16% in monthly rainfall in the country despite good rains in certain parts, was the warmest Aug in India since 1901, recording a mean temperature of 28.010°C.Region-wise, South peninsular India recorded its second-warmest Aug since 1901. East and northeast India recorded their third-warmest, while northwest India saw its fifth-warmest, Aug in 126 years.So far, the country as a whole has reported a deficit of 14% in cumulative (June 1-Aug 31) rainfall, despite ‘normal’ rainfall in July. In June, the deficit was as high as 35%. Out of a total of 741 districts assessed for monsoon rainfall distribution, 312 (42%) received ‘below-normal’ rainfall and 38 districts (5%) reported large deficient rainfall till Aug 31.A forecast of ‘below-normal’ rainfall in Sept may lead to a deficit in overall kharif acreage.
