CHENNAI: A war of words broke out between former chief of BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit K Annamalai and functionaries of Sena UBT and MNS over his remarks that Mumbai is an international city and does not belong to Maharashtra alone. Annamalai made the comment while campaigning for BMC polls in Mumbai last week. At a joint rally of Sena UBT and MNS in Mumbai on Monday, MNS chief Raj Thackeray mocked Annamalai, calling him “rasmalai” and invoked the slogan “hatao lungi, bajao pungi”, a phrase derogatorily used to target south Indians in Mumbai. We can’t change our orders every day,” the CJI said during the hearing, as quoted by ANI.However, during the proceedings, Justice Joymalya Bagchi observed that regardless of whether they are able to vote in the current elections, the more significant issue of their continued inclusion in the electoral rolls would be examined by the court.Counsel representing the petitioners argued that even individuals engaged in election duty are entitled to vote, prompting the court’s observation that the matter should be pursued through the prescribed legal mechanism.The court also granted liberty to persons excluded from the voter roll in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in West Bengal elections to approach the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court with their grievance.A bench led by CJI Surya Kant further directed Appellate Tribunals to grant out-of-turn hearings in cases of excluded persons whose appeals are pending, particularly where urgency is demonstrated. With the monsoon approaching—a period that typically triggers a surge in infections—health experts say the disease is no longer seasonal and is spreading across geographies due to rapid urbanisation and changing climate patterns. Despite the growing burden, dengue still has no approved, specific treatment. Patients are currently managed through supportive care, highlighting a major gap in the healthcare response. At a high-level meeting in Delhi involving global and Indian stakeholders, including WHO, ICMR, NITI Aayog and industry leaders, experts stressed that bridging this treatment gap is now a priority. The Dengue Alliance—a coalition of countries including India, Brazil, Malaysia and Thailand—is pushing to accelerate development of therapies and improve access. Dr Sanjay Sarin, continental lead asia and director south asia, DNDi (Drugs for neglected disease initiative) told TOI that several drug candidates, including antivirals and monoclonal antibodies, are currently in advanced clinical trials. In India, institutions such as Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) and ICMR are supporting research, while Serum Institute is conducting phase 3 trials of a dengue monoclonal antibody treatment. At the same time, policymakers are focusing on building climate-resilient health systems. NITI Aayog member V K Paul said changing ecology due to climate change will significantly alter patterns of vector-borne diseases like dengue, making preparedness critical at all levels of healthcare. Current efforts include strengthening fever surveillance, improving early detection, and upgrading district hospitals, community health centres and medical colleges to handle cases. Mosquito control measures and prevention strategies remain central to the response. Experts also emphasised the need for “decisive solutions,” particularly vaccines and therapeutics. “While some vaccines are already available globally and more are in development—including Indian candidates—access and pricing remain key concerns, said Sarin. With India reporting over 2.8 lakh dengue cases in 2023, and likely underreporting due to surveillance gaps, the urgency is clear. If current research efforts succeed, the next few years could mark a shift from symptom-based management to targeted treatment. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday launched a sharp attack on the BJP during a poll rally in Kolkata, accusing the party of influencing the state’s administrative machinery and vowing to politically counter it beyond Bengal.”The names of all those who are working for BJP are listed… You’ve brought in people based on their BJP background and appointed officers accordingly… Remember, you don’t have the capacity to defeat us… We fight against injustice, we fight for our rights,” Mamata said while addressing a poll rally in Kolkata.”I was born in Bengal and will die in Bengal… After winning Bengal, I will take over Delhi… I don’t want power, I want the BJP’s destruction in Delhi… Not only will there be destruction in Bengal, but the BJP will also have to be removed from Delhi,” she added.This comes amid an intense campaign battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), the BJP and the Congress in the ongoing assembly elections.The high-stakes contest has seen both sides trade sharp barbs, with Mamata repeatedly accusing the BJP of attempting to influence the electoral process, while the BJP has targeted the TMC government over alleged misgovernance and corruption.The elections have also witnessed record voter participation.
