There are many real issues that need discussion. They create a new distraction every day so that we are unable to talk about the people’s concerns,” she told reporters outside Parliament.Her brother, and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, declined to comment, saying reporters were “wasting their time” by asking him for a reaction.The siblings are great-grandchildren of Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister.Addressing the ‘Sardar Sabha’ in Vadodara, Gujarat, on Tuesday, Rajnath Singh alleged that Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to use government funds to build the Babri Masjid. He added that it was then-home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who opposed the plan, and described Patel as “truly secular.”“Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was truly secular. He never believed in appeasement. When Jawaharlal Nehru spoke about spending government funds on the Babri Masjid issue, it was Patel, a son of Gujarat, who opposed it. He did not allow the Babri Masjid to be built with government money,” the senior BJP leader remarked.He added, “Nehru raised the question of reconstructing the Somnath Temple. Over a hundred literary figures will converge for this event, designed to boost the state’s literary profile and encourage reading. – More than a hundred authors and literary figures are expected to attend the Raipur Sahitya Utsav next year from January 23 to 25. The literary festival is part of Chhattisgarh’s silver jubilee celebrations.Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai unveiled the festival logo at his residence office on Tuesday, marking the start of preparations for the three-day event, and said the festival would bring together noted writers and allow the public to interact with them.“This festival will give Chhattisgarh a new identity in the literary world and inspire the public towards literature, writing and reading,” the CM said. As of September 30, 2025, the country reported 3,320 cases and just 14 deaths — a striking contrast to previous years where fewer infections caused significantly higher mortality.In comparison, 2024 saw 2,041 cases and 347 deaths, 2023 recorded 8,125 cases and 129 deaths, and 2022 logged 1,320 cases and 410 deaths, NCDC’s influenza surveillance shows.Kerala reported the highest deaths in 2025 (8), followed by Maharashtra (3) and one each in Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.Amid rising case numbers, the Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on Tuesday reviewed national preparedness for the winter influenza season. I do not want to keep such expectations from any party. Runways were cratered, installations shattered, and the adversary’s early move was blunted within hours,” it said.The subsequent air–land operations also began with what the post described as a “thunderous reminder” of the IAF’s reach.“AN-12s dropped forty-eight 500-lb bombs over Changa Manga, sparking a massive fire in the enemy’s supply camp,” it added.On December 16, 1971, Pakistani forces commanded by Lieutenant General AAK Niazi surrendered to the Indian Army’s Lieutenant General JS Aurora — a capitulation involving 93,000 troops, the largest surrender since World War II.The day is celebrated as “Vijay Diwas” (Victory Day) in both India and Bangladesh.However, relations between them have grown strained following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister in August 2024. The debate on election reforms will take place on Dec 9, parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said, adding that 10 hours each have been allotted for the two debates, with the possibility of extension. The Congress-RJD-Left coalition had strongly opposed SIR in its campaign before the polling was announced, with Rahul Gandhi leading a long yatra alleging a BJP-EC nexus for “vote chori”. 12 NAGPUR: Half a century passed bearing a trauma that had revolutionised anti-rape laws in India and saved thousands of identities from being exposed to shame, but when TOI’s story on her plight put her back on the spotlight, Mathura forgot about her hardship and sought help for her two sons.On Tuesday, when Chandrapur district collector Vinay Gowda stepped into her ramshackle home in a tiny hamlet in east Maharashtra and wanted to know how he could help her, she demanded nothing, only jobs for her sons.Gowda and his team, surprised by her selflessness, have now begun planning contractual openings or business grants for her sons. “The younger of the two seemed proactive. We can think of helping him start a shop or a goat-rearing business,” said Gowda, who handed over a cheque of Rs8 lakh to Mathura. The cheque was given to the bank manager, who was in Gowda’s team.”The cheque has been deposited and a fixed deposit opened, which would need the tehsildar’s nod to encash. She would now get Rs5,000 per month as interest,” said Gowda, who reached Mathura’s home amid his tight schedule on a polling day in the district.Gowda further stated the govt would extend a grant under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to build a home at the same place, where Mathura lives. Delhi high court NEW DELHI: The protection enjoyed by a woman under Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) is not available in proceedings related to Foreign Exchange Management Act (Fema), which is governed by civil law, Delhi high court has ruled.Justice Neena Bansal Krishna dismissed a writ petition filed by a 53-year-old Canadian citizen challenging ED summons issued under Fema Section 37 for recording of her statement, rejecting the contention that safeguards guaranteed to women under CrPC applied to such summons.The petitioner argued that she could not be compelled to appear at the ED office and her statement must be recorded at her residence. She cited CrPC Section 160(1), which prevents women from being required to appear at places other than their residence for investigation. However, the HC highlighted that Fema investigations were civil-administrative proceedings, not criminal inquiries, and therefore, the gender-based protection available under CrPC could not be invoked.“The PMLA and the Fema have distinct statutory frameworks and nature of proceedings. Section 50 PMLA confers criminal investigative powers on ED involving summons for inquiries related to money laundering, which is a scheduled offence under PMLA and involves criminal prosecution. In contrast, Section 37 Fema is primarily concerned with civil-administrative investigations of foreign exchange contraventions governed by a regulatory framework distinct from criminal law. Secondly, there is a difference in the scope of summons and procedural safeguards,” the court said.“Civil code contains no provision like Section 160 CrPC mandating the recording of the statement of a woman at her residence. NEW DELHI: Ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit for the India-Russia annual summit, Moscow has backed oil trade with India saying sanctions against Russian companies will cause only an insignificant dip in India’s imports from Russia.Briefing the media, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said both sides were working to find ways to not allow volume of trade to fall, adding Russia has deep experience of performing under a regime of illegal sanctions through technologies at its disposal.“There can be, for a very brief time, insignificant drops in volume of oil trade, but we consider those sanctions to be illegal from the point of view of international law,” said Peskov, who also stressed the need for India and Russia to make bilateral trade immune to pressure from third countries.The Modi-Putin summit will take place against the backdrop of pressure applied by the US and EU on India to review its energy ties with Russia. NEW DELHI: Ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit for the India-Russia annual summit, Moscow has backed oil trade with India saying sanctions against Russian companies will cause only an insignificant dip in India’s imports from Russia.Briefing the media, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said both sides were working to find ways to not allow volume of trade to fall, adding Russia has deep experience of performing under a regime of illegal sanctions through technologies at its disposal.“There can be, for a very brief time, insignificant drops in volume of oil trade, but we consider those sanctions to be illegal from the point of view of international law,” said Peskov, who also stressed the need for India and Russia to make bilateral trade immune to pressure from third countries.The Modi-Putin summit will take place against the backdrop of pressure applied by the US and EU on India to review its energy ties with Russia. The US has slapped an additional 25% tariff on India for purchasing oil from Russia.“We do not accept these limitations, and we are doing our best to ensure that we continue our trade and that our purchasers enjoy guaranteed supplies of oil and oil products. Responding to a question by Dr Vikramjit Singh Sahney in RS, junior health minister Prataprao Jadhav said polluted air is a “triggering factor” for respiratory diseases, and worsening air quality in urban centres is being closely monitored through an expanding national surveillance system.Govt data shows that Delhi’s six central hospitals together reported 67,054 ARI emergency cases in 2022, 69,293 in 2023, and 68,411 in 2024, with admissions rising from 9,878 to 10,819 over the same period. The Supreme Court has issued a warning to the Association for Democratic Reforms for making unsupported allegations regarding the Election Commission’s methods in validating voter lists. During the proceedings against the legality of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the court encouraged a focus on legal frameworks rather than political posturing or speculative assertions about BLO suicides. NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday told ‘Association for Democratic Reforms’ to argue within legal confines while challenging the validity of SIR of voter lists across states and without reciting snide remarks of political parties, after its counsel Prashant Bhushan referred to EC as a ‘despot’.A charged up Bhushan reeled off a set of accusations — SIR is an unprecedented exercise for de novo preparation of voter lists which is impermissible under Representation of the People Act; and an unholy hurry to complete the exercise within a short period has put BLOs under “immense mental and physical strain leading to 30 of them committing suicide”.“A lot of people see EC as a despot as it does not care for the statutory provisions, rules and regulations, and whimsically carries out whatever it feels to be appropriate,” Bhushan said.A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi immediately cautioned Bhushan not to deviate from his legal pleadings. “There is no point in making sweeping remarks against EC relying on snide remarks made by political parties (opposed to SIR). Confine your arguments to the legal issues (raised in your petition) to challenge the validity of SIR,” the bench said.Bhushan said SIR was a ruse for EC’s game plan to verify citizenship of residents in constituencies across country. He said citizenship is determined by a competent authority under ministry of home affairs and that EC has no role in this exercise.Earlier in the day, advocate Ashwini Kumar Uadhyay had alleged there were repeated instances of assault and use of criminal force to intimidate BLOs engaged in SIR work in Bengal and other states, and sought a direction from SC to allow EC to requisition the armed forces and state police for preparation of a correct voter list. NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday asked EC to ‘sympathetically’ consider Kerala govt’s request for extending the deadline for completion of SIR of state voters list by a week beyond the conclusion of local body elections on Dec 13.A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi told Kerala govt to submit a representation to EC within 24 hours and asked EC to consider it sympathetically and pass an order within 2 days of receiving the request for extension.Kerala govt had sought deferment of SIR in the state till Dec 21. But EC, through senior advocates Rakesh Dwivedi and Maninder Singh, informed the bench that as of Nov 30, over 98% enumeration forms have been distributed and over 81% have been digitised.Dwivedi said of total 5.5 lakh govt employees, Kerala govt has allotted 25,468 govt servants as BLOs for SIR exercise and another 1.76 lakh personnel for smooth conduct of local bodies elections. Since the two sets of personnel have been assigned different kinds of work and there is no overlap, neither SIR nor local bodies elections would get impacted, he said.Kerala SEC, which is conducting the local bodies elections, also informed the bench that there had been no hiccups in the ongoing process and that on conclusion of elections on Dec 13, the personnel assigned for the purpose will be free to resume their official duties.Singh said since EC and SEC are experiencing no problem in conducting SIR and local bodies polls simultaneously, Kerala govt should not have any problem either. However, advocate Ranjit Kumar, appearing for a politician petitioner, said political workers cannot visit constituencies because of the local bodies elections. NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday asked EC to ‘sympathetically’ consider Kerala govt’s request for extending the deadline for completion of SIR of state voters list by a week beyond the conclusion of local body elections on Dec 13.A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi told Kerala govt to submit a representation to EC within 24 hours and asked EC to consider it sympathetically and pass an order within 2 days of receiving the request for extension.Kerala govt had sought deferment of SIR in the state till Dec 21. But EC, through senior advocates Rakesh Dwivedi and Maninder Singh, informed the bench that as of Nov 30, over 98% enumeration forms have been distributed and over 81% have been digitised.Dwivedi said of total 5.5 lakh govt employees, Kerala govt has allotted 25,468 govt servants as BLOs for SIR exercise and another 1.76 lakh personnel for smooth conduct of local bodies elections. Since the two sets of personnel have been assigned different kinds of work and there is no overlap, neither SIR nor local bodies elections would get impacted, he said.Kerala SEC, which is conducting the local bodies elections, also informed the bench that there had been no hiccups in the ongoing process and that on conclusion of elections on Dec 13, the personnel assigned for the purpose will be free to resume their official duties.Singh said since EC and SEC are experiencing no problem in conducting SIR and local bodies polls simultaneously, Kerala govt should not have any problem either. However, advocate Ranjit Kumar, appearing for a politician petitioner, said political workers cannot visit constituencies because of the local bodies elections. Government clarifies users can delete the Sanchar Saathi app, intended to combat cyber fraud, despite initial mandates for pre-installation. Minister Scindia assures no snooping or call monitoring, emphasizing the app’s role in verifying IMEI numbers and tracing stolen phones. The move aims to enhance user protection against digital threats. NEW DELHI: A day after a furore erupted over its decision to mandate pre-loading of state-run Sanchar Saathi app on all new smartphones, the govt softened its stance on the matter, saying that users are free to delete the application if they do not want to have it on their devices.Amidst concerns around state surveillance and violation of user privacy due to the mandated installation of the app, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasised that the fears were unconfounded and added that the app was to protect the users from cyber frauds. “If you want to delete it, then delete it,” Scindia told reporters outside Parliament after the opposition Congress also raised the matter. “But not everyone in the country knows that this app exists to protect them from fraud and theft.” Dismissing the charges of the Opposition, Scindia asserted that there is no chance of snooping or call monitoring through the app. “It is our responsibility to make this app reach everyone. If you want to delete it, then delete it. If you don’t want to use it, then don’t register it. If you register it, then it will remain active. If you don’t register it, then it will remain inactive.”However, the Nov 21 order of the department of telecom (DoT) mandates the pre-install of the app under the Telecommunications (Telecom Cyber Security) Rules, 2024, and its further amendments. Not doing this will lead to action under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, 2024 (as amended). Also, the govt order had clearly mandated not just the pre-installation of the app but also instructed that “its functionalities are not disabled or restricted.” So whether users will be allowed to delete it — and remove it from the device — still remains a question.However, govt sources said that the phrase — “ensure that the pre-installed Sanchar Saathi application is readily visible and accessible … and that its functionalities are not disabled or restricted” –is a direction to manufacturers, and not a restriction on users. “It simply means manufacturers must not hide, cripple or pre‑install a non-functional version of the app and later claim compliance. Nowhere it has been mentioned in the above clause that the Sanchar Saathi App cannot be uninstalled by the end user. It is up to the citizen if he wants to enable and register Sanchar Saathi Mobile App or wants to uninstall it. Users remain free to uninstall or delete the Sanchar Saathi if they do not wish to use it, as clearly clarified by the govt.”The move has already seen critics find a parallel to a similar mandate issued by the Russian govt in August requiring pre-install of state-backed messaging app, MAX. Scindia, however, denied the Opposition’s charges, and dismissed fears that it was an app for snooping. “There is no snooping on the basis of this, nor is there any call monitoring. If you want, then activate this. If you don’t want to, then don’t activate it.”The Minister claimed that Sanchar Saathi is an app and a portal on the basis of which a smartphone owner is able to protect their devices. “This is a step towards public participation. In this, people should not object, people should welcome. On the basis of this, when you buy a mobile phone, on the basis of that, whether the IMEI number is fake or genuine, you can recognise it on the basis of the Sanchar Saathi app.” The minister said that there have been more than 1.5 crore downloads of the Sanchar Saathi App, and added that to date, approximately 2.75 crore fraudulent mobile connections have been disconnected, and approximately 20 lakh stolen phones have been traced.
