File photo BENGALURU: Karnataka is preparing to expand its Telescope Distribution Scheme beyond Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KRIES) schools to a larger group of govt institutions, science and technology minister NS Boseraju said Thursday. A proposal seeking more funds will be placed before the chief minister during the next budget meeting.Boseraju was speaking at the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, where he inaugurated a training programme for KRIES teachers on operating and maintaining the telescopes supplied to their schools. The effort is part of a broader push to strengthen astronomy-based learning across the State.Under the scheme, 833 residential schools and PU colleges under KRIES have each received a telescope at a total cost of Rs 3 crore. Boseraju said no other government department in the country had taken up a project of this scale. He added that the department hopes to extend telescope distribution to more schools in the coming year. Security agencies launched an extensive search operation in Ajmer, Rajasthan, following a bomb threat email claiming RDX-based explosives were planted at the Ajmer Sharif dargah, district collectorate, and Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. The email warned of detonation coinciding with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s arrival. Premises were evacuated and thoroughly checked, with no suspicious objects found so far. Search operation launched after bomb threat (ANI image) NEW DELHI: Security agencies on Thursday launched an extensive search operation in Rajasthan’s Ajmer after the district administration received a bomb threat email. The email claimed that RDX-based explosives had been planted at the Ajmer Sharif dargah, the district collectorate and the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu. It also warned that the bombs would be triggered in connection with the arrival of Russian President Vladimir Putin, police said. Drones, Snipers And Armoured Convoy: India Rolls Out Unmatched Security Grid For Putin’s Delhi Visit According to officials, the threatening email was received at the Ajmer collectorate around noon. It claimed that four RDX-based improvised explosive devices (IEDs) had been planted at the dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, the collectorate premises and the Kudankulam atomic plant. The letter also warned that the bombs would detonate upon the arrival of President Putin, news agency PTI reported. Superintendent of Police Vandita Rana said all departments were immediately alerted after the threat mail surfaced. “An email threatening to bomb the Ajmer dargah and the collectorate was received. Following this, the premises were evacuated and checked thoroughly,” she said.She added that the dargah complex was also cleared and a detailed search operation is underway. “So far, no suspicious object has been found,” Rana said.Teams of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), dog squads and bomb disposal units have been deployed at the affected locations. Security personnel from four police stations, along with additional forces, are conducting systematic checks using metal detectors as part of the operation.Entry into the Ajmer Sharif dargah has been temporarily halted, leading to large crowds gathering outside the main gates. The entire area around the shrine has been cordoned off and all incoming visitors have been stopped until the search is completed.Senior officials, including three civic body commissioners and station house officers from nine police stations, have been stationed at the site to supervise the operation. Security agencies launched an extensive search operation in Ajmer, Rajasthan, following a bomb threat email claiming RDX-based explosives were planted at the Ajmer Sharif dargah, district collectorate, and Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. The email warned of detonation coinciding with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s arrival. Premises were evacuated and thoroughly checked, with no suspicious objects found so far. The email claimed that RDX-based explosives had been planted at the Ajmer Sharif dargah, the district collectorate and the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu. It also warned that the bombs would be triggered in connection with the arrival of Russian President Vladimir Putin, police said. It claimed that four RDX-based improvised explosive devices (IEDs) had been planted at the dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, the collectorate premises and the Kudankulam atomic plant. The letter also warned that the bombs would detonate upon the arrival of President Putin, news agency PTI reported. Superintendent of Police Vandita Rana said all departments were immediately alerted after the threat mail surfaced. “An email threatening to bomb the Ajmer dargah and the collectorate was received. Following this, the premises were evacuated and checked thoroughly,” she said.She added that the dargah complex was also cleared and a detailed search operation is underway. “So far, no suspicious object has been found,” Rana said.Teams of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), dog squads and bomb disposal units have been deployed at the affected locations. Security personnel from four police stations, along with additional forces, are conducting systematic checks using metal detectors as part of the operation.Entry into the Ajmer Sharif dargah has been temporarily halted, leading to large crowds gathering outside the main gates. The entire area around the shrine has been cordoned off and all incoming visitors have been stopped until the search is completed.Senior officials, including three civic body commissioners and station house officers from nine police stations, have been stationed at the site to supervise the operation. Chandrashekhar Azad (File photo) NEW DELHI: Defending Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Mohibbullah Nadvi, who used the word “jihad” in Parliament, Aazad Samaj Party (ASP) chief Chandrashekhar Azad on Thursday said the term means the same as “jaddojahad” (struggle/great effort) in Hindi.“Jihad is simply an Arabic term for what we describe in Hindi as ‘jaddojahad’ — the fight against oppression,” he told PTI Videos. “Oppression Will Trigger Jihad”: Jamiat Chief’s Explosive Claim Stirs Storm “I’ve always maintained that anyone facing oppression or having their rights taken away will stand up against injustice,” Azad added. “Our country won freedom through a long and difficult struggle, with thousands making the ultimate sacrifice — that, too, is ‘sangharsh’ (struggle).”The Nagina MP also questioned the need to reinterpret the term “jihad” to suit “one’s own convenience.”Azad further said, “He (Nadvi) was simply talking about jihad against oppression. As an Islamic scholar, he was only trying to tell his people to stand up against injustice. And in this country, we can fight even the biggest battles through constitutional means.”Asked about Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind chief Mahmood Madani, who made similar remarks at a rally in Bhopal, the ASP founder-president pointed to the Madani family’s association with the freedom movement.“I don’t agree with the comments being made about such a family for political gains. His remarks are being twisted and distorted — he’s being portrayed as a villain. Had he been wrong, I would have spoken about it. But I can’t criticise someone who is right,” Azad stated.What Mohibbullah Nadvi saidSpeaking in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, the SP MP from Rampur said, “Our party has already opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill. People have six months to upload their properties on the UMEED portal, but even the server is down and there are constant issues. Around 70% of properties have not been registered. Today, it seems Articles 25 and 26 — the right to practise and manage one’s own religious affairs — are being destroyed in the country, and Muslims’ lives have become troubled.”Claiming that several people were drawing parallels with the freedom struggle, he continued, “Many are saying that, just as we had to fight during the independence movement, we may again have to protest against injustice — we may have to do jihad. How long will Muslims continue to be oppressed in this country?”His remarks prompted sharp criticism from the ruling BJP MPs.On Thursday, Nadvi defended his comments and declared a “boycott” of the media, accusing news outlets of “mocking” the Muslim community.“I said what I had to say, and in the context I had to, in Parliament. The media is making a mockery of Muslims in this country. This goes against the Constitution, against morality and against patriotism. This is a community that has made sacrifices for this nation for hundreds of years,” he told reporters outside Parliament. “When the media tries to demoralise a community, boycotting it is also a jihad. As an Islamic scholar, he was only trying to tell his people to stand up against injustice. And in this country, we can fight even the biggest battles through constitutional means.”Asked about Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind chief Mahmood Madani, who made similar remarks at a rally in Bhopal, the ASP founder-president pointed to the Madani family’s association with the freedom movement.“I don’t agree with the comments being made about such a family for political gains. His remarks are being twisted and distorted — he’s being portrayed as a villain. Had he been wrong, I would have spoken about it. But I can’t criticise someone who is right,” Azad stated.What Mohibbullah Nadvi saidSpeaking in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, the SP MP from Rampur said, “Our party has already opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill. People have six months to upload their properties on the UMEED portal, but even the server is down and there are constant issues. Around 70% of properties have not been registered. Today, it seems Articles 25 and 26 — the right to practise and manage one’s own religious affairs — are being destroyed in the country, and Muslims’ lives have become troubled.”Claiming that several people were drawing parallels with the freedom struggle, he continued, “Many are saying that, just as we had to fight during the independence movement, we may again have to protest against injustice — we may have to do jihad. How long will Muslims continue to be oppressed in this country?”His remarks prompted sharp criticism from the ruling BJP MPs.On Thursday, Nadvi defended his comments and declared a “boycott” of the media, accusing news outlets of “mocking” the Muslim community.“I said what I had to say, and in the context I had to, in Parliament. The media is making a mockery of Muslims in this country. This goes against the Constitution, against morality and against patriotism. This is a community that has made sacrifices for this nation for hundreds of years,” he told reporters outside Parliament. “When the media tries to demoralise a community, boycotting it is also a jihad. A mother and son, working at a construction site, killed a contractor who allegedly attempted to rape the woman. While they faced legal consequences, their father, accused of years of abuse, allegedly raped their younger daughters. The horrific abuse surfaced when a younger son alerted neighbours, leading to the father’s arrest and the children’s rescue. Representative image NAGPUR: A 35-year-old woman and her 17-year-old son, while trying to fight off an alleged rape bid on the mother, ended up killing a contractor at the construction site where they were working in June. While the mother of four languished in prison, the children’s father, who had supposedly tormented the family for years, allegedly raped the couple’s minor daughters over three months.The horrific abuse came to light in Oct after the couple’s younger son (14) caught the father and sought help from a neighbour, who alerted a group of transgender people living nearby. Members of the transgender community allegedly stormed the accused’s residence, rescued the children, thrashed the father and handed him over to Wathoda Police. Cops arrested the father and booked him under Pocso Act. The survivors — aged between 9 and 12 — were sent to a govt shelter for rehabilitation and counselling.Married off at 14, the woman had fled from Delhi to Nagpur in Dec 2024 with her kids to escape years of domestic violence. Hoping for a fresh start, she and her elder son began working at a construction site in Kuhi area in June, police said.On the eighth day, the labour contractor allegedly dragged the woman to an isolated spot and tried to rape her. As she fought back, her son rushed to her aid. In the scuffle, the contractor was seriously injured and died later.The panic-stricken duo fled the scene but were caught. A mother and son, working at a construction site, killed a contractor who allegedly attempted to rape the woman. While they faced legal consequences, their father, accused of years of abuse, allegedly raped their younger daughters. The horrific abuse surfaced when a younger son alerted neighbours, leading to the father’s arrest and the children’s rescue. Representative image NAGPUR: A 35-year-old woman and her 17-year-old son, while trying to fight off an alleged rape bid on the mother, ended up killing a contractor at the construction site where they were working in June. While the mother of four languished in prison, the children’s father, who had supposedly tormented the family for years, allegedly raped the couple’s minor daughters over three months.The horrific abuse came to light in Oct after the couple’s younger son (14) caught the father and sought help from a neighbour, who alerted a group of transgender people living nearby. Members of the transgender community allegedly stormed the accused’s residence, rescued the children, thrashed the father and handed him over to Wathoda Police. Cops arrested the father and booked him under Pocso Act. The survivors — aged between 9 and 12 — were sent to a govt shelter for rehabilitation and counselling.Married off at 14, the woman had fled from Delhi to Nagpur in Dec 2024 with her kids to escape years of domestic violence. Hoping for a fresh start, she and her elder son began working at a construction site in Kuhi area in June, police said.On the eighth day, the labour contractor allegedly dragged the woman to an isolated spot and tried to rape her. As she fought back, her son rushed to her aid. In the scuffle, the contractor was seriously injured and died later.The panic-stricken duo fled the scene but were caught. President Droupadi Murmu presents Lt Col C Dwarakesh with the National Award for Persons with Disabilities on Wednesday PUNE: A basketball match at a military station in 2014 was one of the last things Lt Col C Dwarakesh saw before an accident left him blind. He would spend the next eight months in hospital, healing and adjusting to life without eyesight while his mind envisioned new possibilities.On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu presented the 36-year-old with the National Award for Persons with Disabilities, recognising an Army career that even disability couldn’t cut short, and one that now includes a world record in para shooting.Lt Col Dwarakesh is the first officer of the Indian armed forces to continue in active service despite total blindness. It’s an achievement made possible by the derring-do of a young officer who never gave up on himself despite no precedent.“As an Army officer, I was trained to have conviction, courage, willpower and tenacity. But blindness is an impediment I couldn’t have prepared for,” Lt Col Dwarakesh told TOI from Delhi. “I overcame this hurdle through academics and technology, clearing multiple competitive exams along the way. I now research para sports, especially for people living with blindness. I converted my disability into a power and found ways to express the way those with vision do. This mindset has helped me reach new heights.”Supported by AI tools and assistive technology, Dwarakesh performs his responsibilities with the same proficiency and precision as his colleagues. In paralympic sports, he is a national champion in swimming and shooting, ranked world No. 3 in the 10m air rifle event. His most recent achievement was a world record score of 624.6 at the Shooting World Cup in the UAE this Oct. Calcutta high court KOLKATA: Calcutta high court Wednesday decided against scrapping the recruitment of 32,000 teachers for state-run primary schools, setting aside the order of Justice Abhijit Ganguly, who has since become a BJP MP, report Subrata Chattoraj & Poulami Roy.In 2023, Justice Ganguly, while cancelling the appointments based on 2014 Teacher Eligibility Test, said the jobs were “actually sold”. A larger bench had stayed the order.HC said it was setting aside the order because the “conclusion by the investigating authority (CBI) would not reveal that the appointed candidates were involved in any corrupt practices”.Allegation of fraud in entire selection process not sustainable: HCThe allegation of fraud and corruption pertaining to the entire recruitment process is not sustainable and the appointment of the 32,000 teachers cannot be interfered with,” a bench of Justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Reetobroto Mitra, hearing an appeal by the state govt against Justice Ganguly’s order, ruled.Cautioning courts against “innovating at pleasure”, the bench said, “There must have been a possibility of systemic malice, assessment of data doesn’t point to the same.”The division bench noted that CBI only found irregularities in the recruitment of 360 candidates. Of them, 264 candidates were given grace marks and identified. Additionally, 96 candidates did not secure qualifying marks but were still appointed. Their services were terminated but they are still teaching following a Supreme Court order.After the verdict, Ganguly said, “They (the HC bench) did what they thought was right. What can I say? Unless I read the judgment and its reasoning, I cannot speak.”CM Mamata Banerjee gave a cautious response. “We respect the judicial process. I’m happy our brothers and sisters have got their jobs back,” she said. Her education minister Bratya Basu showed less restraint. “They (teachers) thought him to be their God, but he turned out to be Satan,” he said.BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari defended Ganguly. “I can’t comment on the judiciary’s order but apparently, there were irregularities in the recruitment process in both TET & SLST. It is also true that thousands of deserving candidates suffered in both cases due to the presence of tainted candidates in the panel. Calcutta high court KOLKATA: Calcutta high court Wednesday decided against scrapping the recruitment of 32,000 teachers for state-run primary schools, setting aside the order of Justice Abhijit Ganguly, who has since become a BJP MP, report Subrata Chattoraj & Poulami Roy.In 2023, Justice Ganguly, while cancelling the appointments based on 2014 Teacher Eligibility Test, said the jobs were “actually sold”. A larger bench had stayed the order.HC said it was setting aside the order because the “conclusion by the investigating authority (CBI) would not reveal that the appointed candidates were involved in any corrupt practices”.Allegation of fraud in entire selection process not sustainable: HCThe allegation of fraud and corruption pertaining to the entire recruitment process is not sustainable and the appointment of the 32,000 teachers cannot be interfered with,” a bench of Justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Reetobroto Mitra, hearing an appeal by the state govt against Justice Ganguly’s order, ruled.Cautioning courts against “innovating at pleasure”, the bench said, “There must have been a possibility of systemic malice, assessment of data doesn’t point to the same.”The division bench noted that CBI only found irregularities in the recruitment of 360 candidates. Of them, 264 candidates were given grace marks and identified. Additionally, 96 candidates did not secure qualifying marks but were still appointed. Their services were terminated but they are still teaching following a Supreme Court order.After the verdict, Ganguly said, “They (the HC bench) did what they thought was right. What can I say? Unless I read the judgment and its reasoning, I cannot speak.”CM Mamata Banerjee gave a cautious response. “We respect the judicial process. I’m happy our brothers and sisters have got their jobs back,” she said. Her education minister Bratya Basu showed less restraint. “They (teachers) thought him to be their God, but he turned out to be Satan,” he said.BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari defended Ganguly. “I can’t comment on the judiciary’s order but apparently, there were irregularities in the recruitment process in both TET & SLST. Suraj Revanna BENGALURU: A special court for elected representatives in Bengaluru on Tuesday rejected the ‘B report’ — a case-closure report citing insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations made in a complaint — filed by SIT, stating that there was not enough proof to clear JDS MLC Suraj Revanna of the charges of raping a man.This was the second of two rape cases filed against Suraj, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and nephew of Union minister H D Kumaraswamy. In the first case, in which he is accused of raping a party worker, the SIT has filed a chargesheet. In the second case, a co-accused from the first case filed a police complaint alleging that he, too, was subjected to unnatural sex by the MLC.Recently, the victim in the second case filed a protest petition before the special court challenging the SIT’s closure report.
